Bruce Springsteen Drops Two F Bombs in New Song on CBS Website

3

Fans of CBS’s “The Good Wife” are excited because this Sunday’s episode features songs from the new Bruce Springsteen album called “High Hopes.” The whole album is now streaming on CBS.com. But one of them is a little bit out of step for Bruce and for CBS: the really cool rocker “Harry’s Place” features the “F” word not once but twice at about 1:04 and 1:05.

“You don’t f–k with Harry’s money/You don’t f–k Harry’s girls” is the line.

It’s definitely a first for the Tiffany network. It may be a first for Bruce, too, as I don’t recall that word turning up in his songs. Anyway, “High Hopes” is ok, it’s what they call a contract album– Springsteen has a $100 million contract with Sony, and something has to be released every year or so. “High Hopes” has cover songs, like the title track, and re-do’s of older Springsteen songs. Even for a “contract album” it’s better than anything else being released this winter. Great song: “Just Like Fire Would.”

Lady Gaga Attacks Former Manager: “Those Who Have Betrayed Me”

3

Lady Gaga has attacked her former manager, Troy Carter, in a rambling statement she posted late yesterday on her website. The post starts out as an explanation for why her latest video isn’t ready. But then it becomes a fairly blatant diatribe about Carter, who she separated from in November as her failed “ARTPOP” album was launching. (You read about that here, first, exclusively.) “ARTPOP” has been nothing short of a disaster, with lackluster sales and no direction concerning release of singles, money spent for promotion, or pitch to her audience.

The original story: http://www.showbiz411.com/2013/11/04/exclusive-lady-gaga-and-manager-splitting

Anyway here’s the post. I’ve split it into sections so it’s easier to read.

“It [ed note: the video] is late because, just like with the Applause video unfortunately, I was given a week to plan and execute it. It is very devastating for someone like me, I devote every moment of my life to creating fantasies for you. All my my most successful videos were planned over a period of time when I was rested and my creativity was honored.

“Those who have betrayed me gravely mismanaged my time and health and left me on my own to damage control any problems that ensued as a result. Millions of dollars are not enough for some people. They want billions. Then they need trillions. I was not enough for some people. They wanted more. I am very grateful to the photographers and designers who have always stood by me to make sure my fans are never aware of the things that happen behind the scenes, but unfortunately after my surgery I was too sick, too tired, and too sad to control the damage on my own. My label was not aware that this was going on.

“The next few months of ARTPOP will truly be its beginning. Because those who did not care about ARTPOP’s success are now gone, and the dreams I have been planning can now come to fruition. Please forgive me that I did not foresee this coming, I never thought after all the years of hard work that those I called friends and partners would ever care so little at a time I needed them the most.

“Give me a chance to show you the meaning of seeing art all around you. Open your hearts to me again that I may show you the joy of us coming together through our talents, that we are stronger as a unit than when we are alone. Let me be for you the Goddess that I know I truly am, let me show you the visions that have been in my mind for two years. I love you. Forgive me monsters. Forgive me ARTPOP. You are my whole world.

Beatles: Annie Lennox-Dave Stewart Eurythmics TV Reunion for Special Has Ringo’s Fingerprints

1

UPDATE: Keith Urban, John Legend, Maroon 5, Alicia Keys also added.

Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart are reuniting for the special Beatles concert being put together by producer Ken Ehrlich the night after the Grammy Awards. The two hour show will feature superstars performing Beatles songs, with very likely Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr joining. Today’s announcement of a Eurythmics reunion signals that Ringo, a long time friend of Stewart, has hand in the action. That’s good news.

I was the first to tell you about this concert which is set for Monday January 27th at the L.A. Convention Center. This may seem like an odd place, but the idea was to grab artists the day after the Grammys. And all other local venues were booked.

The show is being filmed by Grammy partner CBS for broadcast on February 9th, the 50th anniversary of the Beatles appearance on CBS’s “Ed Sullivan Show.” I’d put good money on some kind of event at David Letterman’s show, kids, where McCartney has already played above the outdoor marquee. A return to Ed Sullivan Theater by Paul and Ringo is something everyone would go crazy for.

Ehrlich hasn’t announced other guests for the Convention Center show. But he’s a master at putting people together and  creating reunions. The possibilities are tantalizing.

CBS Has A Real Soap Opera on “The Young and the Restless” As Network Exec and TMZ Comedian Husband May Have Stoked Scandal

10

What the heck is going on at CBS’s long running soap opera, “The Young and the Restless”? It’s starting to sound like a real life soap opera. Over the weekend, TMZ ran a story claiming that actor Michael Muhney was fired from the soap–allegedly–for sexually harassing actress Hunter King. Allegedly. He’s 38, married with three kids, and very popular. She’s just turned 20. The TMZ story was as quick a way to tar and feather Muhney’s career if not his life, all with unnamed sources. Muhney was thrown under a bus, whether the story is true or false.

How would such a story wind up in TMZ? Put aside the main nut of the story– that Muhney allegedly groped King’s breasts on two occasions. Stories about soap opera actors aren’t generally the world of TMZ, which bases most of its material on video and photo ambushes, overheard comments from minor celebrities, and following people until they do something.

It does turn out that CBS Daytime chief Angelica McDaniel is married to Brian McDaniel, a comedian who works with TMZ and often appears on their syndicated television show. Wikipedia lists him as a TMZ “editor” and he is repeatedly referred to in published reports as a regular on the show. It’s a pretty narrow coincidence that the “Young and the Restless” story turned up on TMZ at all, of all the “gossip” columns — including the soap opera press– in the world.

The TMZ story was loaded with information that could only have come from a real insider– including King’s name. Ordinarily in such matters, the so-called “victim” would be protected at all costs. Muhney may have triggered all this when he tweeted–before CBS could announce it– that he’d been “fired” from the show.

Usually the network simply says an actor is “moving on” or some other innocuous comment. But Muhney’s own surprise Tweet may have riled someone– perhaps allegedly McDaniel– to give TMZ more than just a tip for a story. Each actor may be considering what to do next as their privacy has been violated. If Angelica McDaniel passed along information about an ongoing sexual harassment issue at one of her shows to her husband, that may be a bigger issue than what may or may not have happened between Muhney and King.

I’ve sent an email to Brian McDaniel, and will let you know how he replies.

Downton Abbey Is Back! O’Brien is Gone, Edna Returns, Lord Grantham Perturbed

0

Hello East Coast.
Isn’t it nice to see almost everyone back from “Downton Abbey”? MINOR SPOILERS As you know Matthew is dead. (Dan Stevens watched the show from Brooklyn, with all the blonde washed out of his hair.) Everyone’s a little cross and depressed for the two hour opening episode. But PBS will be opening Champagne bottles tomorrow when the numbers come in. Just wait for news that “Downton Abbey” has broken some kind of record.

So what happens? IF YOU’RE NOT ON THE EAST COAST, CLOSE YOUR EYES. Mary is back to being bitchy and wearing widow’s weeds. Edith is thinking about going to Germany with her lover so he can get a divorce. (Germany is one country where you can get a divorce on the grounds of “lunacy.”) Lord Grantham isn’t excited about running the Downton estate with Mary; it’s not for women. Lady Cora is easily swayed by Thomas, who gets the nanny fired as retribution. Thomas also causes trouble for Anna.

Anna and Mr. Bates are incredibly annoying because they are happy. Let’s hope that doesn’t last too long.

Let’s get to the Dowager Countess. Maggie Smith is in fine form. She’s wise but wicked. She tries to help Moseley get a job, she gives Mary good advice, and she pushes Mary and Branson together. She also reverts to calling Branson by his last name instead of “Tom” because now he’s the estate agent. With Sybil gone, Tom’s been demoted.

“You and I are quite different,” Matthew’s mother Isobel tells the Countess. “Indeed we arrrrrr,” Violet replies.

O’Brien is gone because the actress decided three years of success was enough and now she wants to appear on drafty West End stages. So Julian Fellowes has sent her to work for Rose’s parents in India. She is replaced in the role of sinister troublemaker by Edna, the returning ladies’ maid who tried to seduce the newly widowed Branson last season.

The two episodes-in-one wrap up old business and move us ahead. Next week, Mary starts to meet potential suitors and Rose– playing the Georgina role from “Upstairs Downstairs”–probably starts getting involved with that local named Sam. Tsk, tsk.

Box Office: Bieber Busts Believers, Frozen Nears $300 Million

0

Despite bad weather, a lot of people went to see “Frozen” even though it was freezing outside. The Disney blockbuster nears $300 million domestic take now. All memories of “The Lone Ranger” are — hi ho!– way in the distance.

Justin Bieber’s “Believe” remains a bust without believers. Through Sunday the infomercial has not cleared $6 million. The estimated take for today, Sunday, was $138,000, or the price of one of those cars Bieber smashes up in his driveway.

The big news is that “Philomena” is about to cross the $20 million mark. The Stephen Frears directed dramedy is a phenomenon. Everyone loves this movie. Judi Dench still hasn’t done much publicity since she’s been in the UK. But she’s coming to the US next weekend. She will be amused how much people want to see and talk to her.

Three other potential Oscar nominees are all in the top 10 and doing well– “American Hustle,” “Wolf of Wall Street,” and “Saving Mr. Banks.” “Inside Llewyn Davis” is finally taking off. “August: Osage County” is doing great in limited release.

The big big duds: “47 Ronin”– cost $200 mil or more, only $32 mil in the bank. And “Enders Game” which must be pretty bad because even the foreign market couldn’t save it.

Tonight Show Class: New Trailer for Jimmy Fallon Has Nod to Conan O’Brien

0

NBC has just released the first teaser for “The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.” All the past hosts are included. There’s even a nod to Conan O’Brien, who had a brief run was treated badly by NBC under its old regime. But this is classy– and you can see Jimmy’s fingerprints all over it. Conan is a friend and mentor, as well as a past writer of “Saturday Night Live.” We’re going to see a kinder, gentler Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Bravo!

“Inside Llewyn Davis” Wins National Society of Film Critics, Means Nothing

0

The National Society of Film Critics is the complete opposite of the National Board of Review– they’re real, respected critics. And yet, they mean nothing in the Oscar race, almost as little as the NBR. Neither group is a predictor of Oscars. Stick with the SAG Awards for that. But at least the NSFC had made good choices. They voted Oscar Isaac for Best Actor in “Inside Llewyn Davis,” the best picture. I am really surprised that there’s not been more momentum for Robert Redford’s extraordinary performance in “All is Lost.” But that company, Roadside Attractions, has made no friends since day one. With another distributor, that movie would be considered a masterpiece. Oh well. Love Oscar, love the movie. The numbers next to the titles are the people who voted. Last year the NSFC chose “Amour” and Emmanuelle Riva. Hmmm…

Paris Jackson Back on Social Media, Posting Pictures And Cryptic Messages

8

Paris Jackson is back on social media. Just as her family is once again angling to get money from someone for Michael Jackson’s death (I’ll get into that in a minute) Paris has returned from social media exile. Actually she was never gone. Even though her Twitter account stopped cold last June when she attempted suicide, Paris made a quick switch to Instagram.

On Instagram the not yet 16 year old has been posting photos regularly. This week, she put a photo of herself in a bikini, a Happy New Year’s card, and a few shots of friends either from home in Calabasas or from her Utah sleep away and recovery school. She looks happy and like a 15 year old.

The only problematic photo was posted last September with a disturbing message: “To love is to destroy. And that to be loved is to be the one destroyed.”

Hopefully, some therapy is being applied at that school.

And oh yes, the Jacksons, thwarted in their attempt to get money by suing AEGLive, are now trying to snatch that $17 million Lloyds of London policy from the insurer. In the AEG case the Jacksons claimed that Michael was sick as a dog, frail, and not able to perform the London concerts. Now in the Lloyds case they say Michael was in great shape. Whatever. The court sees right through it. There will be no $17 million payday.

Phil Everly, of the Beloved Harmonizing Everly Bros., Dead at 74

0

Phil Everly, who won the hearts of many generations singing with his brother Don, has died at age 74. The Everly Brothers’ harmonies sounded like heaven on Earth, and inspired singer from Simon & Garfunkel to Lennon and McCartney, the Mamas and the Papas, and even Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, and Dave Edmunds. Their hits, from “Wake Up Little Susie” to “Bye Bye Love” still resonate, and sound as fresh as a summer breeze. Like all singing duos (some of them actual brothers) the Everlys didn’t always get on so well. They did reunite in the 1980s for a new album when Paul McCartney wrote them a new song.

Many of their songs were written by Felice and Beaudleaux Bryant, a husband and wife team whose son Dell has long been a guiding force at BMI Music. The Bryants wrote 23 hits for the Everlys. But it was the brothers who sang them, and made magic. Dell Bryant told me tonight that he’d known the Everlys since he was 8 years old. “Phil was the sweet brother, even Don would acknowledge that!” Dell observed. “Phil could sing lead and sing harmony. He was the best at it. He was a good man, a sweet man, a family man and the best damn harmony singer ever.”

Dave Edmunds was once interviewed about the Everlys. Read it here: http://www.rockabilly.nl/references/messages/dave_edmunds_everlys.htm
