Carole King’s Strange Omission of Merry Clayton At Tribute Dinner

0

Carole King thanked four people last night at the MusiCares Person of the Year Award dinner– James Taylor, the late Donnie Kirschner, her ex husband Gerry Goffin, and producer Lou Adler.

Who did Carole forget? Strangely she omitted Merry Clayton, the famed R&B back up singer. Clayton was in the audience and on the bill. She performed with her co-stars from “20 Feet to Stardom,” Darlene Love, Lisa Fischer, and Judith Hill.

Clayton is being touted right now for her work on the Rolling Stones record “Gimme Shelter.” But after she made that record in 1969, Clayton sang back up prominently on King’s “Tapestry” and “Music” albums. She gave those records their R&B gospel feel. Clayton released three albums of her own on Adler’s Ode label. One of the albums had four Carole King songs. She had a hit with King’s “Oh No Not My Baby.” King played piano on the record!

And yet, King didn’t mention Clayton at all, or even give her a nod for performing on the show. So weird. As far as I could tell, Clayton sat all night with the “20 Feet to Stardom” crowd. There was no interaction with King’s table. Maybe she and Clayton saw each other backstage. But for the 1,000 people in the audience they’d never know that one of last night’s performers helped King get the sound that made her own two best selling albums all time hits.

Seems Clayton, as per King, remains 20 feet from stardom still!

Lady Gaga Has a New Manager, Who Used to Work for Old Manager

0

Lady Gaga has a new manager. Bobby Campbell, who used to work for Gaga’s original manager, Troy Carter, is now in charge. I met Campbell, who left Carter on the same day as Gaga, last night at MusiCares before Gaga’s magnificent performance of “You’ve Got a Friend.” He’s relaxed, friendly, and young. The Mother Monster starts a big tour soon. In the fall, Sony will release Tony Bennett’s jazz duets album with Gaga as his partner. There is a lot to come in 2014.

Meanwhile, Troy Carter hasn’t missed a beat since splitting with Gaga. He’s managing both John Mayer and Miguel. The latter also wowed the crowd last night at MusiCares. Miguel may have will.i.iam do something on a new album he’s recording now for release this summer. Carter has big plans for Miguel, who’s already a big deal from his “Adorn” album and single. Carter’s also invested in a bunch of new media projects. He’s rocking post-Gaga!

UPDATE:  A source says: “Bobby was Chief Marketing Officer at Atom Factory since 2010. Before Atom Factory, he worked in product management at Interscope, and have been part of Gaga’s career since January 2008 prior to the release of Just Dance. Gaga asked him to be her manager in late November, after he left Atom Factory to remain working with her.”

Nicole Kidman’s “Grace” Will Be Dubbed by French President’s Mistress

0

The 2014 Cannes Film Festival is four months from now. But sacre bleu! The red carpet for opening night is going to be completely crazy. Julie Gayet, the mistress of French president Francois Hollande, is dubbing Nicole Kidman’s role as Grace Kelly in “Grace of Monaco.” The Olivier Dahan film is set for opening night.

This means that not only will international movie star and Oscar winner Kidman be front and center, but so will the “first lady” of France around whom an international scandal has developed. By May, Gayet should be firmly established as Hollande’s in house lover. Some time soon his current lover Valerie Trierweiler will be eased out of the picture completely.

Gayet– who for now has no status at all in French government or royalty– essentially will be the voice of the most famous Monegasque princess!

Hollande will enact the transition quickly, I am told, as he is set to visit Washington on February for meetings with President Obama. You can only imagine the first question at a president conference in the White House with France’s presidential Tiger Woods.

Even more, the intense interest in Cannes for “Grace of Monaco” should guarantee everyone involved huge box office overseas and the kind of press that money can’t buy. If only they could get Hollande himself to dub Tim Roth’s voice as Prince Rainier!

Lady Gaga Steals the Show from More than a Dozen Stars at Carole King Tribute

0

Lady Gaga, sans large cocoon type eggs or meat dresses, stole the show Friday night at the 24th annual MusiCares Person of the Year dinner for Carole King in Los Angeles.

Gaga, wearing a simple white gown with a white cape, was one of dozens of stars including King herself who performed songs from the composer’s astounding catalogue. Gaga accompanied herself on piano singing “You’ve Got A Friend” on a rotating turntable stage in the middle of a room of around one thousand industry insiders.

She “batted cleanup” so to speak, following the opening “Hi De Ho” from Steven Tyler and LeAnn Rimes; Pink singing “So Far Away”; Train with Pat Monahan on “I Feel the Earth Move.” And then Gaga sat down at a white Yamaha piano in the middle of the L.A. Convention Center ballroom and just blew everyone away with an intimate, throaty, bluesy version of King’s greatest song. The whole room went wild, with Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Browne among those cheering when Gaga came to a conclusion.

Later, when King accepted the MusiCares award, she cited Gaga’s performance. “The music flows through her,” King said.

And what a night. Before King and James Taylor took the stage to finish up the evening, a parade of performers serenaded the packed room that included celebs like Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, David Crosby, Valerie Simpson, Eddie Cibrian, Jerry Moss, Jimmy Jam Harris, Verdine White of Earth Wind & Fire, Peter Asher, Hoda Kotb, and Nancy Pelosi. Hillary Clinton even sent a video message for King.

Performances included Gloria Estefan “It’s Too Late” (Bonnie and Jackson’s table literally sang along with her); will.i.am and protege Leah McFall on “Love Makes the World Go Round”; Jason Mraz, Zac Brown, and Sara Bareilles on “Beautiful”; Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer and Judith Hill did a gorgeous “Way over Yonder”; Miguel with Kacey Musgreaves on “Crying in the Rain”; Alicia Keys did a beautiful job on “Natural Woman”; Jakob Dylan and Louise Goffin (King’s eldest child) jangled an acoustic “Goin’ Back”; and Jennifer Nettles, Amy Grant, Miranda and Martina McBride put together a medley of “Been to Canaan,” “I’m into Something Good,” “”It Might as Well Rain Until September,” and “One Fine Day.”

Yes, Carole King composed all those songs.

King and Taylor ripped through “Up on the Roof,” “Home Again,” “Sweet Seasons,” “Hey Girl,” Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” and a rocking version of “Jazzman” with surprise guest Tom Scott (he played on the hit record), King thanked Gerry Goffin, Lou Adler, Donnie Kirshner, and Taylor. The latter, she said, made her “step forward” from being a songwriter to a performer.

She said, “My dream is to hear great singers perform my songs. You can’t do any better than this.” Noting that the magic of the night would eventually wear off, she concluded, “Chickens today, feathers tomorrow.”

The nicest part of the night was seeing King and her family  up and dancing during each song, with Carole mouthing the words as if she were a fan.

Jimmy Kimmel hosted the show, which raised money for MusiCares, the Grammy foundation that supports musicians in need of all kinds of help from medical to personal and financial issues.

Beyonce, Jay Z Will Open Grammy Show on Sunday Night

0

I’ve confirmed that Beyonce and Jay Z will open Sunday night”s Grammy show. Their song will be their duet from Beyonce’s surprise album, “Drunk in Love.” Beyonce once opened the Grammys with Prince. She knows how to start a show. That should be something.

The Grammys are otherwise star-packed with lots of hit singers. The only person really missing will be Justin Timberlake, who was mysteriously overlooked in the main categories despite having the best selling album of the year.

Still, the show should be hot, with a big focus on the Beatles. Particularly exciting will be Daft Punk with Stevie Wonder and Nile Rodgers, the man who gave “Get Lucky” its personality this summer. Rogers and Daft Punk will also play later at the Warner Music shindig.

There are almost too many pre-Grammy events to cover in one gulp. Last night Billboard magazine gave its third annual Power 100 party. Their Power 100 list put Jay Z and Beyonce at number 1, but they didn’t show up. Lots of execs did, however, including the famed Joe Smith who received the Clive Davis Visionary Award. Smith is a beloved longtime record guy who’s worked with everyone and launched lots of hits. He said of his award, “Clive Davis’s name is on everything except Plymouth Rock.”  That got a lot of warm laughs.

Highlight of the evening at the Emerson nightclub in Hollywood: performances by the stars of “20 Feet to Stardom.” Steve Mc Queen, Oscar nominated director of “12 Years a Slave,” introduced Darlene Love. Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, Tata Vega, and Judith Hill. They each sang their guts and hearts out. Merry Clayton peeled the paper off the walls with “Gimme Shelter.” McQueen, who rarely shows much emotion, was over the moon for all of them.

Best line of the night came from Janice Min, editorial director now of both Billboard and THR. She said, “I can’t believe how many parties you people in the music business have!” So true.

Lady Gaga, Two Thirds of the Police Get Epix with Arthur Fogel

0
“Who the f**k is Arthur Fogel?”  You won’t be asking that after you see the terrific documentary of the same name by Ron Chapman, making its world premiere on EPIX this Wednesday January 29th at 8 PM.  To say that the talented Arthur changed the landscape of the global concert touring industry is understating it at best, he’s literally overseen and still does, the most profitable mega tours in rock history.
Fogel –a soft spoken, gracious native Canadian– uncharacteristically opens up in the film, along with appearances by members of The Police (Sting, Andy Summers, Stewart Copeland), plus Bono, The Edge, Madonna, and more, all singing his praises.

Last night’s screening of the film at Harmony Gold in West Hollywood, followed by a reception at the Chateau Marmont, was one of several big events going on in Grammy week. Over at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre, Bonnie Raitt, Kris Kristofferson, Gavin DeGraw, Jeff Barry and a raft of fine musicians appeared in a sensational legacy concert for the Grammy Foundation called “A Song is Born.” Everyone is still talking about Motown great, songwriter Valerie Simpson, knocking out the industry heavy crowd.

Over at the screening Lady Gaga herself arrived with no fanfare but a typically great outfit and her parents, Cynthia and Joe Germanotta.  She looked quite regal in a long flowing gold gown and at the after party at the Chateau. At the Chateau party she signed autographs, chatted with everyone. At one point she rested her head on her mom’s shoulder.Weary is the head that wears the crown of Lady Gaga!

Also in attendance: Police members Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland, plus media consultant and former Best Buy guru Gary Arnold. All came to support their pal.

Epix’s CEO Mark Greenberg got the night started and told us how excited he is that Epix will soon be on Time Warner Cable in about 60 days on both coasts. “He added, “Epix debuted with the Madonna Concert in October, 2009 and since then we’ve been showing concerts such as Britney Spears, Coldplay, Usher with Pink being the most recent.  Epix is the premium entertainment network, we feature, besides the concerts, big blockbuster movies, comedy specials and original documentaries.  2014 will bring lots of innovative and exciting new programming to our viewers.”

I asked Arthur how he felt about being in the spotlight?  He answered, “I’d rather be in a crowd of people that have paid to come to a show of ours.  Then I could hide backstage like I do.”  He then added,  “It’s a privilege to be a part of their world.  It’s overwhelming and I’m really grateful.”

Arthur got his start in the rock world by playing drums which he still does.  I asked him, does he still Played drums with any of the bands?

“No, “ Arthur then quipped,  “I never asked.  I’d rather play by myself.”

Fogel told me the ups and downs of the rock world never get old for him.  “I don’t think there is anything like the rush of walking into a full arena, a stadium with a great artist and fans that are absolutely excited.  It’s the best adrenaline rush there is.”

What’s coming up for him?  Arthur replied, “Lady Gaga is going out this year.  Justin Timberlake is on the road.  U2 is going on the road hopefully this year.  And I’ve got Sting and Paul Simon next month. So it’s all good stuff.”

I asked filmmaker Ron Chapman about his film. Here’s his quotable quote:  “If you don’t know who the f–k Arthur Fogel is after watching the film I don’t know what the f–k to tell you.  “

What surprised Ron most about the elusive Arthur?   Ron: “I’ve known him for 40 years.  I thought it was the door, the peak behind the curtain, what I could show the public about a side of the business they have no knowledge of and about this unique individual who has changed the face of that business more than anyone else in the last 60 years. “

Cannes Opener: Nicole Kidman as “Grace of Monaco”

0

Waking up in LA to news I knew a bit ago: Olivier Dahan’s “Grace of Monaco” starring Nicole Kidman and Tim will open this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Well, of course it will! This is where it was always meant to be. “Grace” tells a sort of historical refraction of how movie star Grace Kelly became Prince Rainier’s secret weapon in fight with France over taxing Monaco. Kidman and Roth are sensational in it.

An early New York screening without music or color correction had a very good response last fall. But The Weinstein Company wisely held it back out of Oscar competition because they had too many potential nominees for Best Actress.

As it is, Judi Dench became their candidate from “Philomena” and Meryl Streep from “August: Osage County.” Nicole is now on deck for next year, and Tim Roth could go into supporting.

Reading some other columns this morning, these writers forget something: Harvey Weinstein was always going to make this movie work in a big splashy way for Nicole Kidman. And he’s come through with flying colors. An opening in Cannes is the perfect launch for this little gem of a film. Bravo!

Justin Bieber’s Manager, Inventor Scooter Braun: “I Will Act in the Manner of Someone Who Truly Cares”

0

Scooter Braun, manager of Justin Bieber, was much in the conversation last night at Billboard magazine’s Power 100 issue party in Hollywood. The topic: the fact that Braun, who’s made a fortune with Bieber, is rarely with his client. He didn’t fly to Miami when Bieber was arrested yesterday. Instead he issued this terse Tweet that seemed to indicate he hadn’t talked to the 19 year old Bieber at all since his arrest, booking and incarceration:

Most famous managers are with their clients 24/7. Last night among the power players at the Billboard event, many spoke about how Irving Azoff has been with the Eagles every night of their Forum stand. Kathy Schenker is always with Sting. Johnny Barbis is a permanent fixture with Elton John. Arnold Stiefel knows all of Rod Stewart’s moves. And so on. Where JLO goes, Benny Medina is there. Mariah Carey– Jermaine Dupri was on the red carpet with her at the SAG Awards. When you see Justin Timberlake, Johnny Wright is in lock step.

But Bieber? While he’s partying, carousing, racing, doing drugs, drinking, Scooter Braun is invariably on a vacation, in Europe. skiing, at a beach resort. He Tweets the whole mishegos, full of pictures. Said one music insider last night: “He isn’t a manager. He’s an entrepreneur. Justin Bieber has no manager.”

A few people last night speculated that Braun is getting out of the picture, taking his money, and calling it quits. His many Tweets lately seem to focus on singers Tori Kelly and Arianna Grande. Braun’s group The Wanted broke up yesterday in an announcement.

On Twitter at least, Braun has never met an aphorism he didn’t like. He is the king of mindless cliches. He also posted this yesterday

Braun found Bieber on YouTube seven years ago. He created him as a teen popstar from hick Canadian, brought him to America and the world, introduced him to the world in which he now lives. Bieber’s parents are divorced and just 38 years old– meaning they had him when they were just 19. None of them have any higher education. Whatever they’ve learned in the last seven years they will now have to employ if they’re going to navigate their way out of this mess..

Clive Davis Prepares Blockbuster A List Party with JHud, Miley, Lorde, Movie Stars

0

It’s the toughest ticket of the Grammy weekend, Clive Davis‘s pre-Grammy party. For some reason this year is bigger than ever with more bold faced names on the waiting list as the RSVPs come pouring in. Today Jennifer Hudson stopped by to do press with Clive. She’s singing at the show at the Beverly Hilton, sporting a new hot hair cut and her Weight Watchers figure  more svelte than ever. I did ask if she’d like to have dessert some time and she told her favorite: cheesecake! Wait til she tries Eileen’s Special Cheesecake in Soho. So much for Weight Watchers!

So who’s coming? Jamie Foxx has a table, and there’s word that he may be added to the all-star slate of performances as a guest star. Jane Fonda and her beau, legendary record producer Richard Perry will probably sit with The Band’s Robbie Robertson. Robin Thicke and Paula Patton are expected, as are Miley Cyrus, New Zealand phenom Miley Cyrus, and the hotter than a pistol duo of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.

As has been the tradition recently, Clive partners with NARAS to honor a record industry icon. This year it’s Universal Music Group’s Lucian Grange.

I managed to ferret out a few more names on the guest list — not performers, because that’s an even more  secret list– and they include: Quincy Jones, without whom there can be no party; Alicia Keys with Swizz Beatz, Rod Stewart, Katy Perry and John Mayer, Neil Diamond, Neil Young, Daft Punk and Nile Rodgers, Rihanna, Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne, Jackie Collins and Joan Collins– always the best table of the night– plus the inimitable Quincy Jones, the one and only Gladys Knight, and Smokey Robinson, legendary rocker John Fogerty, Kennedy Center honoree Herbie Hancock, R. Kelly, Bill Maher, Ludacris, The Foo Fighters, movie producer Brian Grazer, Kris Kristofferson, all the members of Metallica, Tony winner Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Sony’s Doug Morris, Warner Music’s Len Blavatnik, Apple’s Tim Cook, , Joan Rivers, Miguel, Kathy Griffin, Buzz Aldrin, Sean Parker,  rapper T.I., Imagine Dragons, Akon, Estelle, Kevin Bacon & Kyra Sedgwick,  Magic Johnson, Fantasia, and last but not least Sean Puffy Combs!

Can you imagine who else is coming? And this is the night after the MusiCares all star tribute to Carole King and the night before the Grammys!

I call it the Jingle Ball for Adults!

More names as they roll in…

Bail Just $2,500: Justin Bieber Gets Get out of Jail Free Card from Miami Judge

0

Remember this name, Justin Bieber fans: Judge Joseph Farina from Miami-Dade County. He just gave your boy a Get out of Jail Free card. The judge set bail for Bieber at a meager $2,500 even though the 19 year old was drunk, high as a kite on drugs, cursed out the arresting officers, and spent 8 hours drying out in a prison cell.

If Justin Bieber had not been a so called celebrity, his bail would have been much higher. Remember this judge’s name because this was the beginning of the slide, and Judge Farina was the number 1 enabler. Bieber spent about the same amount renting the Ferrari he got pulled over in. The low, almost non existent bail tells this grown infant that he was right and the police were wrong.

The next incident? Start the wagering. Bieber now joins the Lindsay Lohan-Britney Spears celebrity wreck list officially.
