EXCLUSIVE Free NY Screening of Rogen-Franco “The Interview” Cancelled at Last Minute

0

This afternoon, we’ve learned, a major screening of Seth Rogen and James Franco’s comedy “The Interview” was cancelled here in New York. At 3:41pm Tuesday, the School of Visual Arts sent out an email notifying all students and faculty that they would not be showing “The Interview” tonight.  The email came right after news broke that anonymous threats had been made against theaters that would show “The Interview” come opening day, December 25th.

The SVA Theater, on West 23rd St., is often used for small premieres, screenings, and movie events. It’s not where Thursday’s NY premiere of “The Interview” is set to take place– if that’s still happening.

The threat was included as a note with the illegal release of over 12,000 emails from Sony Pictures chief Michael Lynton’s emails to media organizations. Those groups immediately began doing the bidding of the so called “GOP’– aka “Guardians of Peace”– to hurt Sony, its staff, and associates– and to stop the release of a small, insignificant satire called “The Interview.”

In the movie, Korean dictator Kim Jong Un picks up an American entertainment show on his TV and asks to be interviewed by its insipid host played by Franco. The host, Dave Skylark, and his producer (Rogen) are tasked by the CIA to kill Kim Jong Un. They go to North Korea, chump around like Abbott and Costello, or Hope and Crosby, and eventually fulfill their goal.

Now of course the media, thinking this an episode of “Batman” with Adam West, has played right into the hands of Gotham City’s villains. And Commissioner Gordon is having trouble texting Batman for help. The villains have convinced Gotham authorities they represent North Korea when in fact the Penguin, Riddler, and Joker — the usual suspects– are secretly behind the whole thing.

This is the R rated trailer with lots of vulgarities:

Exclusive: Legendary Singer Van Morrison Switching to RCA Records, 35th Album Due Early 2015

1

Van Morrison just keeps on swinging. The Irish superstar, beloved around the world, is changing labels. He’s jumping from Universal Music to RCA Records, a division of Sony, after a long run at the prior company.

By my count, and Wikipedia, Van has 34 albums apart from greatest hit packages. A new album, number 35, should come from RCA in early 2015. His last album, “Born to Sing: No Plan B” was a career highlight. But Morrison has so many– from “Astral Weeks” (1968) and “Moondance” (1970) right through “Hymns to the Silence” in 1991 and today.

According to his website, Morrison makes his own records which he owns and then licenses them to whomever. He’s been on various UMG labels, mostly Lost Horizon, for years. “Born to Sing” was on Blue Note, which was part of Capitol-EMI. But then Blue Note and Capitol were sold to Universal, and that put Morrison under the umbrella of bland popmeister David Foster. I’ve heard that was not a match made in heaven. And after the Leon Russell debacle, who could blame any legacy artist for hightailing it out of there?

The new RCA recording may be duets with Van on a selection of his many hits by lots of great singers. But they will be true to his jazz instincts, and not the sort of disaster inflicted on the great Smokey Robinson earlier this year by Universal.

By the way, Van Morrison is only 69 years old. We can expect a lot more from him, thank goodness.

Bradley Cooper on “American Sniper” and “Elephant Man”: “This is All I’ve Got, the Best I Can Do”

1

The march to the Oscars is filled with disappointment. There are about 15 men who could be nominated for Best Actor. Only 5 will make it. What do we do?
On Monday at a luncheon for Clint Eastwood and “American Sniper”– at the Four Seasons– I asked Bradley Cooper about his outstanding performances in “Sniper” and on Broadway as “The Elephant Man.” He put it to me bluntly: “This is all I’ve got, this is the best I can do.”

And it’s pretty good, his best. Not only is he killing it– the play just extended its run right through Oscar Sunday February 22nd. But he also rates an Oscar nomination as Navy SEAL Chris Kyle in “Sniper.” Eastwood’s meticulous and analytical direction tells the Kyle family story with grace and sensitivity. Cooper and Sienna Miller are outstanding as Chris and wife Tea.

At lunch, Tea Kyle joined a panel that included Eastwood and the cast, moderated by Anderson Cooper. This young widow is remarkably literate and vocal. Once you’ve met her, you understand “American Sniper.”

So far the Golden Globes and the Broadcast Critics haven’t had a lot of love for “Sniper.” I think this is so wrong. It may be in part to the fact that the National Board of Review over-pandered to it. But Cooper gives a great performance. He told us that playing Kyle –which required beefing up and changing his body– was a “science experiment.”

Cooper, an Actors Studio grad, totally absorbed being Kyle. It’s instructive to remember that this movie is based on Kyle’s book, “American Sniper.” The screenplay was written before Kyle was murdered by a SEAL who’d returned with mental issues. Kyle’s death was not what caused the book and movie to be made–it was his life as a family man who returned home after four tours of duty to be with his family.

Meantime, it was grand to catch up with Clint. An amazing 84 years old, he’s had two movies this year. So now what? “Skiing with my family,” he said, giving me his trademark squint. “I need a break, don’t you think?” Yes, sir!

New York Magazine Admits it was “Duped” on $72 Mil High School Kid

1

New York Magazine admits it was duped by a 17 year old high school kid. The New York Observer went out and interviewed Mohammed Islam, who claimed to have made $72 million in the stock market to New York. Islam admitted he lied. About everything. Little by little we’re seeing big mistakes at major publications — like Rolling Stone, etc. Cutbacks mean the publications are no longer adhering to their prior standards. And these are the results. This is very scary because hoaxers are always out there.

Here is the New York statement:

In the most recent edition of New York, its annual Reasons to Love New York issue, the magazine published a story about a Stuyvesant High School senior named Mohammed Islam, who was rumored to have made $72 million trading stocks. Islam said his net worth was in the “high eight figures.” As part of the research process, the magazine sent a fact-checker to Stuyvesant, where Islam produced a document that appeared to be a Chase bank statement attesting to an eight-figure bank account.

After the story’s publication, people questioned the $72 million figure in the headline, which was written by editors based on the rumored figure. The headline was amended. But in an interview with the New York Observer last night, Islam now says his entire story was made up. A source close to the Islam family told the Washington Post that the statements were falsified. We were duped. Our fact-checking process was obviously inadequate; we take full responsibility and we should have known better. New York apologizes to our readers.

Sony Hackers Threaten Attack on Theaters That Show “The Interview”

0

The Sony hackers– and who knows who they really are– are now threatening to attack the theaters where “The Interview” is shown. The Warning went out this morning as part of another data dump. Where were these people for “Team America” or the other cultural references to the North Korean government? Anyway, the entire data dump has now prompted the first class action lawsuit against Sony by former employees over identity theft. The whole episode seems designed to bring down Sony Pictures entirely regardless of one witless 90 minute comedy. The wording here also seems like intentional broken English.

Here’s the latest:

Warning

We will clearly show it to you at the very time and places “The Interview” be shown, including the premiere, how bitter fate those who seek fun in terror should be doomed to.
Soon all the world will see what an awful movie Sony Pictures Entertainment has made.
The world will be full of fear.
Remember the 11th of September 2001.
We recommend you to keep yourself distant from the places at that time.
(If your house is nearby, you’d better leave.)
Whatever comes in the coming days is called by the greed of Sony Pictures Entertainment.
All the world will denounce the SONY.

Rock Hall Finally Capitulates to Ringo Starr, Snubs Sting, Admits New Group Including Lou Reed (Too Late)

5

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a joke at this point, so what the heck. For years they couldn’t get Ringo Starr in as a solo act. The three other Beatles are all in. Pressure was brought to bear, and now Ringo is getting a special never before given Lifetime Achievement Award. Well, no one’s denying Ringo anything; he’s Ringo.

But this shows how Jann Wenner runs this lawless group. God bless Ringo. What Wenner wants is Paul McCartney to show up and jam with Ringo so they can have something to peddle for their TV show. I hope Paul and Ringo extract a big donation from the Rock Hall Foundation (millions in assets) for a favorite charity in exchange for their participation.

The voted in inductees are Lou Reed, Green Day, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Bill Withers and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. The Rock Hall is right on time, as usual: Reed, Vaughn, and Butterfield are all dead.

The Hall also is giving The 5 Royales a special award under “Early Influencers.” The doo wop group has been on the ballot for about 25 years and could never get voted in. Seymour Stein has always been in their corner. Three years ago, Steve Cropper– guitarist for Booker T and the MJs, studio sideman for groups like Sam & Dave– put together a tribute album to the group. That may have pushed it over.

Snubbed again is Sting, whose long solo career began in 1985. He also has his Broadway musical. This would have been the year to induct him (he’s already in with the Police). It’s really shameful this hasn’t already happened. Nile Rodgers and Chic were also denied entrance even though Rodgers was more a part of pop music success in the year (with Daft Punk) than ever.

Exclusive: OJ Simpson Story with Cuba Gooding Adds David Schwimmer, Paging Samuel L. Jackson

2

The OJ Simpson story, as you may know, is coming to FX. Cuba Gooding Jr. is playing Simpson and Sarah Paulson is taking the role of failed prosecutor Marcia Clark. The 10 part series is Ryan Murphy’s “American Crime Story,” the next series that replaces “American Horror Story.”

But there’s more. I am told that an offer is out to “Friends” star David Schwimmer to play Simpson friend, lawyer and possible co-conspirator Robert Kardashian (yes, he left us that family of tacky, avaricious publicity hounds). If Schwimmer doesn’t commit, I’ve heard that Tim Roth has actually asked to play the part.

On top of that, the word is that Murphy wants Samuel L. Jackson to play Johnny Cochran, Simpson’s famous lawyer who coined the phrase: “If it doesn’t fit you must acquit.” No word if Jackson will take the role. An offer is also out for someone to play Kato Kaelin.

Sources say there will be no Nicole Brown or Ronald Goldman cast as the story takes place beginning on the morning after the murders. There are no flashbacks, either. It’s just everything moving forward from June 12, 1994 through the trial and Simpson’s acquittal.

Simpson, it must be pointed out, has nothing to do with the series, and won’t benefit financially. He remains in prison on his kidnapping and armed robbery charges in a separate incident.

Bill Cosby’s Wife Camille Releases Non-Statement, Doesn’t Refute a Single Claim

1

Bill Cosby’s wife Camille has released a sad non-statement to the press. She neither refutes nor denies a thing that’s been said about her husband. I feel bad for her too. Cosby has hired a spin doctor, but it’s too late. If he were innocent of at least some of the charges, he would have said so by now. He wouldn’t have waited until all academic institutions broke ties with him. Anyway, this statement somehow makes things worse– especially if she knew what was going on, or suspected, over the years.

I met my husband, Bill Cosby, in 1963, and we were married in 1964. The man I met, and fell in love with, and whom I continue to love, is the man you all knew through his work. He is a kind man, a generous man, a funny man, and a wonderful husband, father and friend. He is the man you thought you knew.

A different man has been portrayed in the media over the last two months. It is the portrait of a man I do not know. It is also a portrait painted by individuals and organizations whom many in the media have given a pass. There appears to be no vetting of my husband’s accusers before stories are published or aired. An accusation is published, and immediately goes viral.

We all followed the story of the article in the “Rolling Stone” concerning allegations of rape at the University of Virginia. The story was heart-breaking, but ultimately appears to be proved to be untrue. Many in the media were quick to link that story to stories about my husband – until that story unwound.

None of us will ever want to be in the position of attacking a victim. But the question should be asked – who is the victim?

(Watch) Trailer for Terrence Malick’s Latest Incomprensible Film, “Knight of Cups”

0

Here it is. The trailer for “Knight of Cups,” Terrence Malick’s latest masturbatory exploration of breathless narration laid over provocative images. It follows “To the Wonder” and “Tree of Life,” sleep aids for insomniacs. Cate Blanchett and Christian Bale look like rich Hollywood types who fight in their gated driveway while orgies go on in the background. Also, there are shots of water, and wind blowing. Malick was once a genius. He should have stopped while he was ahead. No wonder JD Salinger stopped publishing. He knew what he was doing.

Sting Makes “Last Ship” Musical Pop– Box Office Crosses $800K for First Time

0

Adding Sting to his own show has done the trick. “The Last Ship” cleared $817K last week, its highest weekly box office number so far. The weekly take is up by around $300,000 and growing. The numbers should only increase through the holidays.

Sting recently announced he was extending his stay in the show through almost the last week of January. This is pretty wild since he hits the road with Paul Simon on January 30th in Auckland, New Zealand.

Meantime, tomorrow the “Last Ship” cast CD lands, with all new recordings of the show’s songs sung by the cast, as well as a bonus track of Sting performing “What Say You Meg?” Even if you have the CD Sting originally issued, the show score is different and must-have. The singers in “The Last Ship”– like Aaron Lazar, Rachel Tucker, and Michael Esper– are just phenomenal.
