UPDATE Zsa Zsa Gabor Turned 99 Years Old, Has Been Hospitalized

2

UPDATE FEB 9 2016: Zsa Zsa is in the hospital. Frederick posted a birthday video on the 8th on You Tube. Subsequently, Zsa Zsa required hospitalization because there was an infection reported in her feeding tube. What’s happened to her is a phenomenal tragedy. And there’s no happy Hollywood ending.

FROM JANUARY 13TH: Believe it or not, Zsa Zsa Gabor is still alive. She turns 99 years old next month, on February 6th. She is still in her home in Bel Air.

Her husband, Frederick Prinz van Anhalt, is only 72. I ran into him a couple of times over Golden Globes weekend. He attended parties with a business associate. This year marks the couple’s 30th wedding anniversary.

Frederick told me that Zsa Zsa does have visitors from time to time. Recent guests included game show host Alex Trebek (75) and former actress/glamour girl Ruta Lee (80).

It’s unclear how much Zsa Zsa understands, but at least she’s comfortable and well taken care of. It’s also unclear if she knows about the death of her only child, Francesca Hilton. Francesca fought with Frederick for years. Then she died just over a year ago– January 6, 2015– at age 67.

Zsa Zsa would barely recognize the world around her if she were really with it. All her friends are gone. Her famous sisters, Eva and Magda, are long gone, as their mother, Jolie Gabor. Her cousins-in-law, Paris and Nikki Hilton, replaced them all. Then they were succeeded by the Kardashians. Of course, the K’s lack the glamour and background. They’re the KMart version of the Gabors.

It’s not the people. Fur coats, the Brown Derby, good manners, they’re all gone, too. It’s best that she stay in bed.

And PS– there are pics of Zsa Zsa now on Google, but she would be so distraught if we used them. Zsa Zsa was all about glamour, glitz and Hollywood, the entire fantasy. Let’s think of her that way.

One Direction Is Not Over for Good, Kids– They’re Just on Break, And This is Why

2

US Weekly, which serves little purpose in this world, “reported” today that pop group One Direction had disbanded permanently. It was either clickbait or an out and out lie. The boys will be associated for a long time.

Earlier this year One Direction said it was taking a break. The boys will try solo projects. But trust me, they will be back. And they’re not going anywhere anyway. They owe Sony greatest hits albums, and live albums. The label has advanced them a lot of money. Someone has to pay it back.

With the David Bowie death pushing all of his albums onto iTunes, and Apple discounting a lot of albums this week, One Direction’s “Made in the AM” got kicked down to number 37 after a good run in the top 10. Now it’s number 33. Not a big jump, but something.

My guess is someone “leaked” this to US Weekly to give the album a little publicity. Last fall when their single “Drag Me Down” had been dragged down, the announcement came about the hiatus. Sales of “Drag Me Down” perked right up. These things are not coincidences. I would also guess that by the time they reunite, even Zayn will be back.

Golden Globes Saturday: ‘It’ Girls Eat After All, Michael Shannon Considers Bernie Sanders

0

Saturday before the Golden Globes meant hitting a circuit that involved marathon eating, drinking and schmoozing…

At W Magazine and Lynn Hirschberg’s second annual “It Girl” lunch at the very snazzy AOC Restaurant, about three dozen stunning women were gathered to toast themselves and their growing place in the film industry. Some were better known than others, like Jo Froggatt from Downton Abbey, and Emilia Clarke from Game of Thrones.

emaytzyOthers were a little less so but they’re going to be stars — and should be. I was seated with four amazing women– Emayatzy Corinealdi, Aisha Hinds, Devika Bhise, and Stephanie Sigman. Check them out on imdb and YouTube– they are the future of the business. Emayatzy starred in Ava DuVernay’s first film, “Middle of Nowhere” (which you must watch). Now she’s on a cool Amazon series with Dana Delany and Ron Perlman called “Hand of God.”

Aisha Hinds already has tons of credits. But I think she’s going to have a breakthrough role any minute now. Then everyone’s going to say, Where was she all this time? Attention: Shonda Rhimes.

Over at the Film Independent nominees lunch Uzo Aduba from “Orange is the New Black” and Rami Malek from “Mr. Robot” were the co-hosts. Cate Blanchett made an early appearance, as her “Carol” costar, Rooney Mara made a later one. Directors Catherine Hardwicke, Kimberly Peirce and Marisa Tomei were chatting, as were Warner’s Sue Kroll and LA Film Fest’s Stephanie Allain, as well as a multitude of industry heavyweights.

Globe nominee for “99 Homes,” Michael Shannon caught up with Spirit nominee Jason Segel for his terrific work in “The End Of The Tour,” and the talented actor who plays the pimp in “Tangerine,” James Ransone.

I asked Michael about how long it took him to get this nomination. He said: “I’ve been knocking around for awhile. Hollywood is really about what have you done lately. But I’m lucky so it’s all good.” What is he doing next? “I’m playing a romantic lead in a comedy called “Pottersville,” I play opposite Christina Hendricks, Judy Greer, and Ian McShane. I’ve wanted to play this kind of role for awhile, so I’m looking forward to it. I seem to scare people from “99” and some of the other work I’ve done, so this is a good change.”

I wondered if Bernie Sanders had seen “99 Homes,” yet, as it would seem to align with Sander’s sensibilities. “I don’t know,” Michael answered. “But he should. I don’t know how I’d get to him. I might have to go to one of his rallies.”

WATCH White House First Ever Live “Pre-Show” for State of the Union Address, Hosted by Actor

6

The E! News sensibility has finally permeated the Oval Office.

Tonight on the White House website there will be a first ever State of the Union address pre-show. It begins at 8pm and is hosted by Terrence Jenkins on the White House website. There may be an audience since it’s coming “straight from the theater at the Executive Office Building.”

read today’s headlines including my report on Natalie Cole’s funeral

According to a press release, Jenkins, “an acclaimed author,”… has been a “co-host of BET’s hit show 106 & Park and more recently as the co-anchor of E! NEWS with Giuliana Rancic. Up next, Jenkins will STAR opposite Paula Patton in THE PERFECT MATCH, in theaters nationwide on March 11th.”

Musical guests include rapper Wale, from Washington DC, and the semi-rock duo EL VY (Matt Berninger and Brent Knopf).

If Paula Patton stops by to promote that movie, I will watch without fail!

“CSI Cyber” Likely Over as Patricia Arquette Takes 4 Film Projects, Ted Danson Exits

0

The “CSI” brand on CBS looks like it’s coming to an end. First, CBS took “CSI Cyber” off the Sunday schedule with no word of when it will return.

Today, Ted Danson announced he’s got a new show on NBC, and he’s leaving the series you didn’t know he was on.

I can tell you exclusively that Academy Award winner Patricia Arquette has signed for four– four– movie projects including two animated films and one directed by Claire Denis. This makes sense: She has an Oscar. She should be making movies.

Plus, series creator Anthony Zuiker is working on a Broadway musical about “Soul Train.”

“CSI: Cyber” has been a headscratcher from the beginning. I’ve tried watching it and have no idea what it’s about. The whole “cyber” thing is hard to depict– digital is not very easy to depict storywise, and one episode about hacking is enough.

We’ll await final word. But the “CSI” era in first run may be over, for now.

The Directors Guild of America has sharpened the Oscar race by choosing its five nominees for Best Director.

They are Tom McCarthy for Spotlight, Alejandro Innaritu for The Revenant, George Miller for Mad Max, Adam McKay for The Big Short, and Ridley Scott for The Martian.

The DGA skipped over Todd Haynes for Carol. Quentin Tarantino for The Hateful Eight, Lenny Abrahamson for Room, David O. Russell for Joy, Spike Lee for Chi-raq, and Ryan Coogler for Creed.

The DGA choices indicate the top 5 movies in the Oscar race for Best Picture and Best Director.

The awards will be announced on February 6th.

Mel Gibson: No Taxes on $70Mil in Assets for Pope-Hating, Holocaust Denying Church

0

Wasn’t it nice to see Mel Gibson up there on the stage at the Golden Globes? It kind of made you nostalgic, didn’t it?

According to just posted Form 990 for Mel’s AP Reilly Foundation, he now has $70 million worth of assets parked in this tax free account. In 2014, he crossed the $70 million line by adding $210,400 in donations.

The AP Reilly Foundation exists to fund and operate Holy Family Church in Agoura Hills (Malibu), California. He built the church for his Pope-hating, Holocaust denying fathers. Mel was inspired by his dad, Hutton Gibson, who is still alive despite all odds. Hutton has his own followers of zealot Catholics who don’t acknowledge the Pope and don’t think the Holocaust happened. They don’t agree with modern Catholic doctrine of any kind. Their church is independent and not part of the Catholic Archdiocese.

And Mel’s dad? He’s 96 years old. A decade ago, he was quoted thusly in the New York Times Magazine by Christopher Noxon:

“Go and ask an undertaker or the guy who operates the crematorium what it takes to get rid of a dead body,” he said. “It takes one liter of petrol and 20 minutes. Now, six million?”

Across the table, Joye [Gibson’s wife] suddenly looked up from her plate. […] She had kept quiet most of the day, so it was a surprise when she cheerfully piped in. “There weren’t even that many Jews in all of Europe,” she said.

“Anyway, there were more after the war than before,” Hutton added.

The entire catastrophe was manufactured, said Hutton, as part of an arrangement between Hitler and “financiers” to move Jews out of Germany. Hitler “had this deal where he was supposed to make it rough on them so they would all get out and migrate to Israel because they needed people there to fight the Arabs,” he said.

Bowie Sales Frenzy as Death Sends 4 Singles into iTunes Top 10, 6 to Top 10 Amazon Albums

0

David Bowie’s death has sparked a sales frenzy on his albums and singles.

Four of the singles– Space Oddity, Changes, Let’s Dance, and Under Pressure (with Queen) take up spots on the iTunes singles charts.

But it’s amazon where things are really crazy. On their digital chart, Bowie has four of the top five albums. (Adele is the exception.) Twelve of the albums from number 6 to 20 on the digital chart are his.

On the amazon chart for CDs and vinyl, Bowie has 9 of the top 20 spots. He has seven more from number 21 to 30.

It’s a lovely tribute to a great artist.

Blackstar: David Bowie, With a Weakened Voice, Leaves A Masterpiece of Messages

0

Just finally listening to “Blackstar” and reading the lyrics. Utterly amazing. David Bowie was always a genius artist. But to face death, and leave these messages is beyond what anyone could have expected. His voice is very weak, but the intent is there, and the music is exceptional.

[Verse 1]
Cash girls suffer me, I’ve got no enemies
I’m walking down
It’s nothing to me
It’s nothing to see
If I’ll never see the English evergreens I’m running to
It’s nothing to me
It’s nothing to see

[Chorus 1]
I’m dying to
Push their backs against the grain
And fool them all again and again
I’m trying to
We bitches tear our magazines
Those Oligarchs with foaming mouths phone
Now and then
Don’t believe for just one second I’m forgetting you
I’m trying to
I’m dying to

[Verse 2]
Dollar days, survival sex
Honour stretching tails to necks
I’m falling down
It’s nothing to me
It’s nothing to see
If I’ll never see the English evergreens I’m running to
It’s nothing to me
It’s nothing to see

[Chorus 2]
I’m dying to
Push their backs against the grain
And fool them all again and again
I’m trying to
It’s all gone wrong but on and on
The bitter nerve ends never end
I’m falling down
Don’t believe for just one second I’m forgetting you
I’m trying to
I’m dying to

[Outro]
I’m trying to
I’m dying to
I’m trying to
I’m dying to
I’m trying to
I’m dying to
I’m trying to
I’m dying to

[Verse 1]
I know something is very wrong
The pulse returns the prodigal
The blackout hearts, the flowered news
With skull designs upon my shoes

[Chorus]
I can’t give everything
I can’t give everything
Away
I can’t give everything
Away

[Verse 2]
Seeing more and feeling less
Saying no but meaning yes
This is all I ever meant
That’s the message that I sent

[Chorus]
I can’t give everything
I can’t give everything
Away
I can’t give everything
Away
I can’t give everything
I can’t give everything
Away
I can’t give everything
Away

[Bridge]
I know something is very wrong
The pulse returns the prodigal sons
The blackout hearts, the flowered news
With skull designs upon my shoes

[Chorus]
I can’t give everything
I can’t give everything
Away
I can’t give everything
Away
I can’t give everything
I can’t give everything
Away
I can’t give everything
Away

Source: Warren Beatty’s “Howard Hughes” Movie Will Be Released in 2016

1

Warren Beatty wrapped his secret Howard Hughes movie the first week of June, 2014. That’s the last real news we’ve heard about it.

This weekend a source knowledgeable about the film says New Regency and the film’s financiers are waiting see Beatty’s latest cut. “The film will come out in 2016,” says my source. And they’d like it out well before there’s another awards season, just to give it a chance to breathe.

The movie stars Beatty, Alden Ehrenreich, Lily Collins, Haley Bennett, Matthew Broderick, Alec Baldwin, Candice Bergen, and Annette Bening, among others. It may or may not be directly about Howard Hughes, whom Beatty plays, or young people around him.

Beatty, according to my sources, showed a cut to close friends and the money people in the late fall. It was met with an overall positive response.

This isn’t the first time Beatty has been coy turning over a film for release. In fact, with all his last films– from “Dick Tracy” to “Bulworth,” “Town and Country,” and “Love Affair,” there were always long waits and a lot of mystery before the film was ready.

Of course, Beatty is a perfectionist. And his fans want the film– which still has no title– to be a hit. So we wait, but not for long. My guess is that it goes to Cannes or Venice– I would bet on Venice– and a soft opening in September. But that is just a guess.
