Trouble: Adele, Sony’s Biggest Artist, Supports Kesha over Record Label at Brit Awards

0

Adele is Sony’s biggest music artist of the moment. She’s sold 9 million copies of her “25” album with no sign of slowing down.

And now Adele has endorsed Kesha, the artist who is suing Sony in what is becoming every day a bigger and bigger headache for the record label.

Adele joins Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Demi Lovato and two dozen more recording artists who have come to Kesha’s aide since she broke down sobbing in court last week over her Sony contract. Kesha wants to break the contract because she says her producer, Dr. Luke, raped and terrorized her for years. She is utterly believable.

Whatever the truth, Sony should really let her out as soon as possible. What pop star would want to leave a 6 album contract with one of the top 3 recording companies unless something was very wrong. Kesha knows that neither Universal nor Warner will sign her after this. She’ll become an indie act. She doesn’t care. But she doesn’t want to record under these circumstances.

Sony had better act fast. On Sunday Adele and Lady Gaga are each appearing on the Oscars. And they are going to be vocal about Kesha– particularly Lady Gaga.

“Straight Outta Compton” Wins Best Picture at Russell Simmons’ All Def Movie Awards

0

And I was there, at Lure nightclub, for an ebullient seat of the pants start up awards show. Pulled together in 10 days by Russell Simmons, the first ever All Def Movie Awards was something those of us who were there will not forget. I got to meet great actors who aren’t often in New York: Sanaa Lathan, Regina Hall, Michael Ealy.

Amber Rose asked to take a selfie with me. Ice Cube and his son O’Shea Jackson Jr. were there to pick up Best Picture for “Straight Outta Compton.” The great Bill Duke was in the audience, as was J.B. Smoove. Tyrese Gibson and Snoop Dogg (smoking a joint, ‘natch) were presenters. I got to hear a very funny comedian– Tony T. Roberts, who will be in the new “Uncle Buck” TV show.

The whole thing will air all night Sunday on Fusion TV as a one hour special, against the Oscars. Just about everyone who got an award (called a Pimp) was thrilled because they’d never won anything before– or were nominated for anything. There was gentle roasting of the Oscars and white Hollywood, but nothing overt. Mainly I was impressed that Simmons could pull this together so quickly, and how nice it was for a first ever event.

My favorite line of the night, from Tony T. Roberts: “I was supposed to be in Straight Outta Compton, but I was too ticklish.” I don’t know why, but I’ve been laughing about that all night.

Refresh a little later today for more, and for the full list of winners and some speeches. By the way, Amber Rose won an award called Most Likely to Steal Your Girl. It was very clever, and so was she in her acceptance speech. Hollywood is ignoring an entire world that’s operating very successfully within its confines. Time to wake up, people.

Vogue Editor Anna Wintour Hawking $45 T Shirts for Hillary Clinton

0

Just got this in my email. Makes me want to vote for Rubio, or even Carson. It’s one thing to get the constant emails from Hillary, Bill, and Chelsea. But Anna Wintour? The Queen of Exclusivity? Anna Wintour would be appalled if she met any real Americans on a Hillary tour. PS She should have done sunglasses. Now those would have sold!

Roger —

I’m emailing you today about a cause that’s deeply meaningful to me: electing Hillary as our next president — and supporting Democrats across the country.

I’m committed to seeing a woman in the White House, but Hillary isn’t just any woman. She’s brilliant and decisive, and she’s the candidate I trust on issues from gun violence prevention to gay rights. There’s no one better prepared than Hillary to protect and build on President Obama’s legacy.

That’s why I volunteered to help create the Made for History collection. It includes beautiful pieces by my friends Marc Jacobs, Tory Burch, Maxwell Osborne, and Dao-Yi Chow. Wearing these American-made items is a wonderful way to show your support for Hillary.

Roger, if you’re with her, I hope you’ll take a moment to look through the collection and choose a piece that expresses your support for this incredible woman. Together, we can all help her win:

Thank you,

Anna Wintour

Paramount Peril as “Zoolander 2” May Lose $80Mil, Cause Huge Layoffs, Cash Crunch

0

Paramount Pictures is in a lot of trouble, I am sorry to say. “Zoolander 2” is a big part of the problem. The Ben Stiller comedy may have lost $80 million, according to sources. Marketing alone for the disappointing release may actually come to $90 million. This is possible considering the international premieres, etc.

“Zoolander 2” now has made less money in its first two weeks than “Zoolander” 1 made in its first two weeks in 2001. As of today, “2” has taken in just $24 million. It’s already running about $6 million behind “1” and that gap will widen. That’s a huge disaster because “Z2” was made with the idea that the time was right and it would eclipse the earlier, not successful film. This guess was wrong. “Z2” has done a little better internationally but not much. And in the end, the marketing wasn’t the issue: there was no movie.

(Still no word what effect that had on sales of Vogue. Anna Wintour really went all in on “Zoolander 2,” even appearing in it with spoken lines. Turns out she stuffed herself into a huge turkey.)

This on top of news today– which I heard a few days ago– that Viacom is offering a minority stake in Paramount to outsiders. The people who run Paramount are smart, but they have had a tough time lately. “Daddy’s Home” did well, but the rest of the recent slate, including even the Oscar nominated “The Big Short” has not made much of a dent at the box office.

“Zoolander 2” is not the only disappointment. “Benghazi” from Michael Bay is a bust at $51 million. No one wanted to see it. But Paramount knew that, dumping it in the first week of January.

I’m told there’s been talk in the executive suite of several remedies including, alarmingly, layoffs that could total over 1,000 people. Other ideas bandied about were the Paramount-Viacom sale, as it has emerged, and the sale of real estate.

Fortunes should turn around later this year. “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” could be a sleeper hit. “Star Trek Beyond” and “Jack Reacher 2” are on the agenda, and should be big hits. There’s a “Tin Tin” movie and a “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” coming in 2016, also likely hits. And 2017 looks even better.

But for now, not even an icy stare from Derek Zoolander is going to stop the current trouble. Knowing Brad Grey and co., they will prevail. These things are cyclical, to be sure.

Spike Lee and Wife Split on Endorsements: He Goes for Bernie, She’s for Hillary

0

Film director Spike Lee and his wife Tonya Lewis Lee disagee about who should be President next. Spike has made a radio commercial for Bernie Sanders in South Carolina. The endorsement is meant to counter Hillary Clinton’s excellent TV commercial narrated by Morgan Freeman. They each want the black vote. Spike says Bernie takes no money from corporations “nada” and marched with Martin Luther King. (Do you know many people marched with Martin Luther King, by the way? It’s like saying you went to Woodstock.)

Meantime wife Tonya has posted this to Twitter:

By the way, check out Spike’s very good film about Michael Jackson during his pre-scandal days, on Showtime.

Here’s Spike’s commercial:

Broadway: Sally Field Plots Return in “The Glass Menagerie” 12 Years After Hit DC Run

0

EXCLUSIVE Sally Field– we really, really like her. She has two Oscars (“Norma Rae” and “Places in the Heart”– rent ’em now) and three Emmy awards. Now she wants a Tony Award. And why not? (After that, it’s just one Grammy away from an EGOT.)

I’m told that Sally will return to Broadway this fall in a revival of Tennessee Williams’ “The Glass Menagerie.” She previously played the role of Amanda Wingfield in 2004 at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC to rave reviews.

In Washington, Gregory Mosher directed her. But the word here is that Sam Gold, Tony winner for “Fun Home,” may be the guy this time. (Mosher is booked up.)

This is not Sally Field’s Broadway debut. Back in 2002, she took over for Mercedes Ruehl in Edward Albee’s “The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?” for the last few months of the run.

Sally’s next movie is “My Name is Doris,” which will be released next month by Roadside Attractions, which I call Roadkill because most of their movies disappear without a trace. She’s said to be very good in it, because she’s good in everything. Even “Gidget.”

Russell Simmons’ “Black Oscars” Will Play All Night on Disney-Owned Network, While Disney’s ABC Airs Main Show

0

Oscars so white? Not if Russell Simmons has anything to say about it.

The entire night of the Oscars– Sunday, February 28th– Simmons will run and run and run his hour long “Black Oscars” aka “All Def Movie Awards” on Fusion TV. The cable channel is available on all systems across the country.

Simmons will tape the “All Def Movie Awards” on Wednesday night at Lure Nightclub in Hollywood, with Tony Rock– brother of Chris Rock, the host of this year’s Oscars– at the microphone.

The group has five Best Picture nominees, all of which can be voted on at http://bit.ly/AllDefMA. They are “Beasts of No Nation.” “Chi-Raq,”  “Concussion,”  “Creed,” “Dope,” and “Straight Outta Compton.”

The Fusion showings will begin at 7pm Eastern on Sunday and rerun all night while the Oscars are on ABC, which is owned by Disney. Ironically, Disney co-owns Fusion with Univision. So far they’ve got a bunch of all star black celebs and actors from Marlon Wayans and Vivica A. Fox to Sanaa Lathan, Regina Hall, Michael Ealy, Nick Cannon, Tyrese Gibson Bill Duke, Robert Townsend, and stars from all the nominated movies.

It’s amazing that neither Jet, Ebony, Essence or BET thought of this– great idea, can’t wait to see how it plays out.

Tribeca Film Festival Will Open with Fawning, Tedious Film about Anna Wintour and Met Ball

0

Why do the Taliban hate us? Isis? Isil? Al Qaeda? The answers will be found in the Tribeca Film Festival’s opening night film, “First Monday in May.” (This has nothing to do with “First Monday in October,” an old play that starred Jill Clayburgh as the first female Supreme Court justice.)

No, this is all about Anna Wintour and her annual pageant at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Celebrities comes in outrageous designer dresses, and there’s a lot of fawning. Kardashians are allowed in proper company. And so on.

Haven’t there been enough documentaries about Vogue magazine? Didn’t “The September Issue” fill this need? Alas, that movie showed Grace Coddington– recently ousted from Vogue–as a sympathetic survivor to the Wintour regime. Now, in “First Monday in May,” Wintour wears sunglasses at indoor meetings and makes snarky comments about her guests. Wait– wasn’t that “The Devil Wears Prada”? And where is the upbraiding after Wintour’s mugging in “Zoolander 2,” a flop that she featured so prominently on Vogue’s cover this month?

Anyway, Tribeca is as far away as it could be from the Met and the Costume Ball. I wish the opening night film had less to do with a party than with independent filmmaking. And really, the sunglasses are getting old at this point.

(Video) Dick van Dyke Endorses Bernie Sanders: “He may be the last voice we ever hear”

0

Dick van Dyke is 90, has a raft of Emmy Awards, and is beloved everywhere. Isn’t it interesting that the older crowd really relates to Sanders as much as the younger one? If Rob Petrie thinks Bernie’s a good idea, well then…
