“Burn Notice” Star Gabrielle Anwar Is Alive and Well and Living in Miami Beach, Where She’s Written a Novel

0

My quick trip to Miami was a disaster travel wise thanks to the thuggish TSA at La Guardia and incompetent American Airlines in Miami (eight hours from airport arrival to home thanks to the airline not telling the truth for hours to trapped fliers.)

But: a dinner at the famous Miami Beach eatery The Forge proved especially illuminating. Shareef Malnik, long time owner of the Forge, is a newly-wed. A year or so ago he married actress Gabrielle Anwar, who was so good in “Burn Notice” on USA Network and is remembered for dancing the tango with Al Pacino in “Scent of a Woman.”

Gabrielle went to Miami seven years ago to film “Burn Notice” and never left. She and Shareef were married last year in Montana. Now they’re settled into Miami life– so much so that Gabrielle told me after dinner that she’s completed her first novel, called “Timepiece.” She’s getting ready to send it to New York publishers. By the way. Gabrielle is Hollywood royalty– her father is the great film editor Tariq Anwar.

The Forge has been in Miami for decades, but it’s under a whole new rehab. The food was delicious, and they offer entertainment like the old Miami nightclubs– female singers who appear through dinner in sequins and high heels, belting out torch songs. And yes, it was packed on Friday night. My companions included Sam “Soul Man” Moore and his manager wife Joyce, who are in town working on a project. The waiters were thrilled to meet the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer.

I was thrilled to meet famed record producer Rudy Perez, who is to Miami what Paul Shaffer and Steve van Zandt are to New York and New Jersey– and maybe more. Rudy and equally famous songwriter Desmond Child (Livin’ La Vida Loca, Living on a Prayer, Dude Looks Like a Lady, etc) will put on the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame in Miami on October 13th.

Exclusive: Lady Gaga on Why BFF Tony Bennett Won’t Be Singing on Her New Rock Album

0

EXCLUSIVE We’re still glowing from Lady Gaga’s historic hour long jazz show at Tony Bennett’s 90th birthday party at the Rainbow Room Wednesday night.

But even topping that was the combo of Gaga and Stevie Wonder, who flew across the country just to be there. At the piano Stevie talked about hearing Tony’s hit “For Once in My Life” for the first time when he was about 13 or 14. “I knew I wanted to do it, and I changed it up,” Stevie said, showing off his revamped version, which also became a hit.

“I said to Ron Miller, who wrote the song, I want strings on my record! But Berry Gordy said, what do you want strings for?” Stevie said, imitating his Motown mentor. In the end, Stevie had a hit with his version, too. A few years ago, Stevie and Tony recorded a duet of the song and have remained life long friends.

Stevie and Gaga have a lot in common right now, too: they each have new music coming but don’t want to talk about it yet. Gaga told me a little bit but then stopped herself. It’s possible she’ll drop a new album before the end of the year.

Stevie played Tony a new song on his digital recorder, using Polk headphones ($249 noise cancelling– they were very good, but I like my AKG N60s better).  Stevie may be dropping some new music soon too.

I asked Gaga about recording with Tony in the future after their hit “Cheek to Cheek” album. “My album will come first, then one with us–maybe Cole Porter.” Tony told us exclusively about the Cole Porter album last year.

Would Tony appear on her rock album, I asked Gaga? “I don’t think so,” she laughed. “He’d say there are only three chords, and two of them are wrong!”

Box Office Shocker: “Suicide Squad” Scores HUGE $20.5 Mil Thursday, Eyes $150 Mil Weekend

0

Box office shocker: “Suicide Squad” scored $20.5 million on Thursday night. The Warner Bros.-DC Comics extravaganza is headed to a record $150 million record breaking weekend.

This is ironic because fanboys on Rotten Tomatoes have done everything to kill this movie. “SS” has a 23 so far and if they could arrange it basement bloggers would make it a zero.

It’s amazing to me where all this bile comes from. I’m particularly shocked because “Suicide Squad” is totally enjoyable. I suspect a lot of Thursday’s customers will come back and see it again. The actors are terrific, the editing is excellent, the art and production design are tremendous. Plus there’s a 70s soundtrack that almost out does “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

Indeed, last night “SS” did almost double what “GOTG” did when it opened.

Don McLean, Post- Domestic Violence Guilty Plea, to Start Tour on August 13th

0

Don McLean’s about to discover who cares and doesn’t care about his domestic violence guilty plea last month. He’s commencing a tour on August 13th that brings him to New York on September 1st and next April, and Los Angeles next winter. This fall he’s got two dates with Judy Collins and one with Boz Scaggs.

On July 21st, McLean pleaded guilty Thursday to hitting and threatening his wife, Patrisha last January. The McLeans were married for 28 years, but Patrisha divorced him this spring. She received a reported $10 million settlement.

McLean’s guilty plea was to misdemeanor counts of domestic violence assault, domestic violence criminal threatening, criminal mischief, and criminal restraint. The singer of “American Pie” and “Vincent” paid a $1,000 fine and has to stay away from Patrisha. He also has to complete a mental health evaluation within 60 days.

Patrisha says that McLean struck and jabbed at her limbs, put his palms on her temples like a vice, and told her he wanted to strangle her. This went on for four hours. She was finally able to call 911 after locking herself in a bathroom. In a statement she said: “Don took away 30 years of my life by controlling every aspect of it through violence and fear of violence. Because he told me over and over again that if I left him he could kill me, divorce has not freed me from living in fear of him.”

McLean, the Donald Trump of singer songwriters, denies everything. His lawyer told the local newspaper in Maine that Patrisha’s statements “are patently and provably false, and designed for her own publicity.”

Who will be singing along to McLean’s hits, clinking glasses and having a jolly time after all this? That remains to be seen. Also curious is why Judy Collins would still want to be part of this.

Oscars: Martin Scorsese Says “Silence” Will Be Golden for End of Year Release

0

The Oscar race for 2017 may be getting a new contender.

Oscar winning director Martin Scorsese says his “Silence” will be golden for an end of year release. “It depends on Paramount,” he told me last night at Tony Bennett’s 90th birthday party.

“Silence” is a passion project for the “Goodfellas” director. It stars Liam Neeson, Andrew Garfield, Ciaran Hinds and Adam Driver, based on a novel by Shûsaku Endô. The movie was so hard to put together it has 25 names listed as producers or executive producers.

“Silence” is described in Wikipedia as “a 1966 novel of historical fiction by Japanese author Shūsaku Endō. It is the story of a Jesuit missionary sent to 17th century Japan, who endures persecution in the time of Kakure Kirishitan (“Hidden Christians”) that followed the defeat of the Shimabara Rebellion.”

As for Paramount, they have “Silence” tentatively penciled in for November or December. But a firm date is still to come. Scorsese told me he’ll be done with scoring in October, and regular people will start to see the movie then.

So throw “Silence” into the ring with Birth of a Nation, Rules Don’t Apply, Queen of Katwe, Sully, The Founder, Fences, and a bunch of other films no one’s seen yet (like LaLa Land, and so on). Why not? So far in 2016, on August 4th, we otherwise have zilch  in our checkout basket for the Academy Awards. Nothing like waiting til the last minute.

Exclusive: Tony Bennett’s Historic 90th Birthday Features Lady Gaga, Stevie Wonder, Plus Paul McCartney, Harry Belafonte, Martin Scorsese

0

tony crowdTony Bennett’s 90th birthday party dinner at the Rainbow Room was something the guests will be talking about for the rest of their lives.

Lady Gaga performed an hour long show of jazz standards that could only be compared, I think, to Judy Garland or Billie Holiday back in their day. She capped it off with a bluesy version of her own “Bad Romance,” then joined Stevie Wonder for “Happy Birthday,” “I Wish,” and Stevie sang “You Are the Sunshine of Our Lives” to Tony, with Gaga on stage. And that’s the capsule version.

The guests! Paul McCartney and wife Nancy joined Tony and his wife Susan, plus Stevie at the main table. At the next table: Martin Scorsese with his daughter Francesca, Bruce Willis and wife Emma, John Travolta, Gayle King, Katie Couric and husband John. The great Harry Belafonte was there, so were Regis and Joy Philbin.

Through the room were the top music people from Sony (Rob Stringer), CAA (Rob Light), our old pal Jerry Inzerillo, and so on. The legendary writer Gay Talese came with his famous publisher wife, Nan.

Tony’s son, Danny, who’s also his manager, produced the show, along with the great in house PR maven Sylvia Weiner. Many of Tony’s kids and grandkids were there.

Governor Andrew Cuomo kicked off the night honoring Tony. His mother Mathilde and sister Maria were there, too.

Lady Gaga followed reading a proclamation from Mayor Bill DeBlasio making August 3rd “Tony Bennett Day.” The Empire State Building was bathed in the colors of Italy to honor Tony especially.

At this point Tony was a little gaga himself. Stevie had a little recording device he carries him, plus headphones, and played Tony some new music he’s working on. Stevie and Paul, old friends, had a joyous reunion and couldn’t stop chatting.

Katie Couric read a top 10 list of all the cool things that happened the week of August 3, 1926. (Good news: the Yankees won.)

But it was some night for Lady Gaga. With her jazz band, she started with “New York, New York” and performed for about an hour. It was mesmerizing. She sang Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile,” a sensational “Lush Life,” “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love,” and Tony’s signature “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” among her 14 numbers. Her “La Vie En Rose” sent the crowd into a frenzy.

And it was Gaga’s night in a way. Bennett changed her life, taking her from meat dresses to a new level, with jazz. This was Gaga’s way of saying thank you, and it was so full of love, so gracious, heartfelt, and genuine the Rainbow Room practically spun around.

Some of this was filmed to be used in a TV special later this fall. Tony plays Radio City in September and three shows will be taped for use also in the special.

There’s plenty more from the night– politics were definitely on everyone’s minds. Stay tuned for more of that and a couple of scoops. Some things I was told last night on the QT. We’ll see how long that lasts!

More pictures midday Thursday, too!

Happy Birthday 90th Tony Bennett– Nice Guys Do Finish First

0

Tony Bennett turns 90 years young today. You know, he defies age and just about everything else. Frank Sinatra’s favorite singer, and now the most famous crooner of our lifetime, Tony is not only our finest singer but also a man of conscience and civility. An early supporter of Martin Luther King, Tony stood up during the Civil Rights movement and never stopped fighting for the underdog. His ear is tuned to great music and to helping people. He’s devoted to his charity Exploring the Arts. And the public school he created in Queens– the Frank Sinatra School– is a beacon of hope.

Musically, you know Tony is as contemporary as the latest pop star. His album with Lady Gaga, Cheek to Cheek, is an enormous success. The pair has toured all over the world. Tony heard what Gaga could be, just as he heard the great gift of Amy Winehouse before her tragic death. And he remains true to real jazz. His latest album, with Bill Charlap on piano, is a masterwork.

There are lots of Tony anecdotes, everybody who knows him has one. He is the most self-effacing person in the world. A few years ago he won a bunch of Emmy Awards for a TV special. I was looking for him at the after party at Disney Hall, thinking he must be in the VIP section or at some special table for winners. No, there he was, sitting with wife Susan, balancing a paper plate on his knee, sitting not in a chair but on a ledge while all kinds of people walked back and forth not even noticing him.

“Tony!” I said. “You know you just won Emmy Awards. You can sit in the VIP section.” He looked bemused. “Thanks, my friend, but I’m fine right here.”

Three summers ago I was at the recording session for his Duets album with Aretha Franklin at a studio on the West Side. It was about 100 degrees outside. Inside, Aretha had producer Phil Ramone turn off the air conditioning. It was so steamy in the studio that poor Phil was drenched in sweat. Aretha wore a sleeveless top and was cool as a cucumber. Tony, on the other hand, was sporting a full suit and tie– dark blue suit, monochromatic light blue shirt and tie. His face was redder than a stop sign.

“Tony, you can take all that off, you know. Aretha won’t mind.” She had said as much.

Tony shook his head. “No sir. I am dressed for Aretha Franklin.”

They went on and recorded “How Do You Keep the Music Playing?” It was a great success, although I don’t know how Tony didn’t pass out during the session.

Afterward, Aretha said, “We took Tony Bennett into the studio and he burst into flames!”

Here’s the video, shot on that day:

Happy Birthday, Tony! And here’s to the beginning of many celebrations!

Pop: R&B Star Frank Ocean Has a New Album! Surprise! Dropping on Friday

0

Surprise! The music biz had pretty much gone into a ditch with no sight of a tow truck.

But on Friday, Frank Ocean will drop a new album called “Boys Don’t Cry” on Apple Music. Ben Sisario got the scoop in the New York Times, and I’ve confirmed it.

The R&B sensation hasn’t released an album since his hit debut, “Channel Orange,” in 2012.

So far this year has been all about Adele, Drake and Beyonce. Kanye West thinks it was about him, but it wasn’t since not many people heard his album. If you add Ocean to this sea of music, that makes four albums that could be in Album of the Year along with David Bowie’s “Blackstar” and Paul Simon’s “Stranger to Stranger.”

The Times was tipped off to the big wave Ocean is making from social media. Frank posted a video about absolutely nothing. But at least “Boys Don’t Cry” will be on AppleMusic and not the dreadful Tidal. And maybe in a few days on Spotify et.
