I Told You: “Conclave” Wins SAG Best Ensemble, Heads to the Oscars For Best Picture without a Best Director

0

Edward Berger’s “Conclave” won Best Ensemble at the SAG Awards and heads to the Oscars in the lead for Best Picture. If it wins, it’s a Best Picture without a Best Director because Berger wasn’t nominated.

Amazing. Berger should have been nominated for Best Director. “Conclave” is a great work, just like his last film, “All Quiet on the Western Front.” Best Picture winners rarely don’t have a nominated Director. Most recent examples were “Wings,” “Driving Miss Daisy,” “Coda,” Green Book,” and “Argo.”

“Conclave” won Best Drama at the Golden Globes, as well.

I predicted this win last September at the Toronto Film Festival.

Universal’s Focus Features can pat themselves on the back.

This year, the SAG Awards are a tricky predictor for the Oscars. Academy voting already closed, so these award may not be an omen. On the other hand, SAG is the biggest chunk of Academy voters. This means they may have also voted for “Conclave” for the Oscars.

Completely dashed hopes for “The Brutalist.”

Demi Moore won Best Actress for “The Substance” and gave an emotional speech. She and Mikey Madison will face off next Sunday.

Best Actor was a surprise. Timothee Chalamet beat Adrien Brody. Chalamet could be the youngest male Oscar winner next week for playing Bob Dylan. Brody won most of the previous awards this season. But the actors in the Guild obviously appreciated Chalamet’s singing as well as his acting.

Apologies to “Anora,” which was on the fast track and may yet pull it out. All other titles are off the table.

“Conclave” is still playing in theaters. Go see it with an audience!

BEST ENSEMBLE: “Conclave”!

Jane Fonda gave amazing speech at the SAG Awards for her Lifetime Achievement Award. The press is focusing on her uncomfortable red carpet appearance. But don’t do that. The speech is much more important. The text of it is coming…

The speech was pro-union, self-effacing, and inspiring. Fonda warned that Hollywood must come together as a community to take on “what’s coming.” She implied that was the Trump administration. She’s right!

“‘Woke’.” she said, “means you give a damn.”

On the red carpet, Jane seemed disoriented when talking to Lily Singh. But it was a totally human moment, just as the one when she hit back at an audio problem during her speech.

Movies:

Best Actor: Timothee Chalamet, “A Complete Unknown”

Best Actress: Demi Moore, “The Substance”

Best Supporting Actor — Kieran Culkin, “A Real Pain”

Best Supporting Actress — Zoe Saldana. “Emilia Perez”

Amazon, Jeff Bezos Selling Fake ICE Jackets to Customers Who Want to Scare Fearful Immigrants

0

Amazon — run by Jeff Bezos — has a long history of selling violent or intimidating T shirts, etc on its site.

They’re now offering fake ICE Jackets to sadistic, stupid people who want to strike fear into the heart of immigrants.

I saw this on The Good Liars — one of the great projects anywhere — but didn’t believe it.

Then I went to Amazon and the proof is right there.

Jason Selvig, the chief Good Liar, interviews a random young  man on the street who proudly displays the ICE jacket as a form of cruelty, I can tell you that this guy is Brandon Fellows. He’s a convicted Jan 6 felon. He obviously hasn’t learned anything. In fact, he’s started a crowdfunding page, maybe so he can buy more of these jackets!

What’s happened to people’s minds? They’re addled. Their brain have been reduced to dust. Worms are eating through the cerebellum. Is Stephen Miller sending out a cancerous kind of mind meld? What would make a person sell something like this, let alone buy it?

Of course Fellows is of a type: he has a resemblance to Kyle Rittenhouse.

Pictures of the jackets below. They’re made by a company called Wild Bobby, owned by Leon Sakkal of Eatontown, New Jersey. According to Instagram, Sakkal is either married or engaged to a woman from Mexico. I doubt they gave these out to family and friends.

Box Office UPDATE: “Captain America” Falls 68% From Opening Weekend But Makes Twice as Much as “Monkey”

0

It wasn’t a stellar weekend at the movies.

“Captain America: Brave New World” fell 68% from last weekend, its debut. Total is now $141 million.

More or less the same amount is coming from foreign territories, where “Captain America” has met with lukewarm responses.

Still, what else is out there? “The Monkey” did Monkey Business, making half as much in its first weekend — $14 million — than the Cap in his second.

More importantly, if you add up the still playing Oscar movies, apart from “Wicked,” total box office is dismal. All of those films combined came to about $150 million. That’s excluding “Emilia Perez,” “Sing Sing,” and the streamers since no knows what they would have made.

March looks rather dry at the box office. No films of any importance except maybe “Mickey 17,” which has an 89 on Rotten Tomatoes but hasn’t gotten much press push from Warner Bros.

We need some Ivermectin stat!

“Anora” Continues March to Oscars, Sweeps Indie Spirit Awards, Eyes SAG Awards Next

0

Well, the Oscar picture is forming.

The movie everyone picked last fall, “Anora,” is heading to the big Oscars prize of Best Picture.

Today Sean Baker’s comic romp through Brooklyn’s underworld of sex clubs and gangsters swept the Indie Spirit Awards. It won Best Feature, Best Director for Baker, and Best Lead Performance for Mikey Madison.

Madison beat Demi Moore, which is probably a sign that Moore is out of the running now for the Oscar. If any group was going to go for her, it would have been the Spirit Awards.

Kieran Culkin continued his path to Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars. He won Best Supporting Performance.

The Spirit Awards are gender neutral, so they’ve removed two more chances for awards to actors. It’s ridiculous and should end. Talk about “woke.” These people are asleep. The actors would love to have all chances to win restored.

Next up for “Anora” is the SAG Awards, Sunday night on Netflix. If it picks up Best Ensemble, and Madison takes Best Picture, the Oscars are a foregone conclusion.

I guess the Spirit Awards were held in the tent in Santa Monica. They were shown, I think, on YouTube. No one knows. I asked around and no other press received a single email about them.

God bless.

PS I just checked. They had 33,000 views on YouTube. They’ve rendered themselves moribund, extinct. Sad.

Box Office: “Captain America” Spanks “The Monkey” Despite Alarming 82% Drop from 1st Week

0

Last night’s box office sent out a warning to Marvel/Disney.

“Captain America: Brave New World” dropped an alarming 82% from last Friday. It still finished first, but support is diminishing. Total now is $120,205,000. Look for another $14 million through tomorrow.

“Captain America” nevertheless spanked “The Monkey” pretty thoroughly. Oz Perkins’ Stephen King adaptation only made $5 million from Thursday and Friday. There won’t be a sequel and certainly not 13 monkeys.

All quiet elsewhere. The Oscar nominated movies, with the exception of “A Complete Unknown” and “Conclave,” have low, low, total box office. If any of the others win Best Picture, they’ll be among the lowest earners ever.

New Trump, Kennedy Center Faces Two Adversary Dates: Vaccine Comedy from Broadway, Conan O’Brien Mark Twain Prize Night

0

Everyone’s excited because the Kennedy Center — taken over by Donald Trump and his troupe of right wingers — is going to start changing their programs.

Already suggested are: a night with the January 6th criminals chorus. Convicted for attacking the Capital in an insurgency, these people could tbe singing their stupid songs on the Kennedy Center stage.

Also, Ric Grenell, the Trump lackey in charge of the KC, says in December there will be a show “celebrating the birth of Christ.”

But more immediately, the Ken Cen has two programs that will run against their new philosophies.

Starting March 7, there’s a two week run of Jonathan Spector’s hit play, “Eureka Day.” The story: an unvaccinated child in a California school comes down with something like mumps. Two sides of parents– pro-vax and anti-vax — get into a hotly contested debate.

The new Thought Police may make it through that one.

But what comes next? The Mark Twain Prize, which will be given to Conan O’Brien. The show is taped March 26th. Every major comedian will be hitting the Kennedy Center, and none of them can be restrained or censored.

Set for broadcast later on PBS, the Mark Twain Prize is sure to be a lively night, especially if David Letterman, Jerry Seinfeld, Jon Stewart, packs of people from “SNL” and “The Simpsons” and so on show up to do tributes. About what about Andy Richter?

Conan will be fresh off hosting the Oscars, too.

Circle that date for memorable moments!

Associated Press Files Suit Against Trump Administration Over Ban from White House Coverage

0

It’s the Gulf of Mexico.

That’s everywhere except in the tiny mind of Donald Trump, who arbitrarily changed the name to Gulf of America. He bullied Google and Apple to use the name on their maps.

But the Associated Press said no. So Trump banned them from covering the White House.

It’s total breach of the 1st Amendment. Now the AP has filed suit against the Trump administration.

This won’t be the last lawsuit against Trump from a news organization. The Pentagon is also making it very difficult to cover them, or for the press assigned there to do their jobs properly.

Read the complaint here.

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson Donate $1 Mil to Wildfire Causes, Urge Others to Do the Same (Hint: Vanity Fair, Chanel)

0

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have donated $1 million to five different charities for wildfire causes.

They’re urging others to do the same.

My words not theirs — Hollywood seems to have forgotten about the wildfire devastation.

A friend of mine, an Academy member, tells me that instead of buying tickets this year she’s sending the money to the Altadena charities.

Meantime, both Vanity Fair and Charles Finch-Chanel are doing next to nothing except downing Inn and Out Burgers and living it up at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Come on, Hollywood!

Carly Simon Drops Remixed Timely Song from 1971 Addressing “Strutting Kings” and “Stirred-up Madmen”

0

In 1971, on her “Anticipation” album, Carly Simon sang a politically charged sensationally dramatic song called “Share the End.” It was written by her with longtime collaborator and friend, Jacob Brackman.

The song’s lyrics addressed the political chaos of the time, and the fear among young people, as Richard Nixon had brought the country to a standstill with Vietnam — and later Watergate.

Brackman, who wrote the lyrics, was inspired by his own famous 1968 Esquire essay called “My Generation.” It was a perilous time.

Carly tells me that when Brackman visited her recently on Martha’s Vineyard, they talked about the similarities to the current situation with Donald Trump. Simon realized she should re-release “Share the Land” and called the record’s original producer, Paul Samwell-Smith, and engineer Frank Filipetti. He brought in musician Peter Vettese to help remix, remaster, and polish up the 50 year old recording.

Carly has this to say about the song in 1971 and today: “Share the End” always felt like a hidden gem—quiet but powerful.” She adds, “Today, in a time of war, real and phony despots, division, and dishonesty across the globe, it sometimes feels to me the world is still “going up in flames—five decades after I first recorded this song.”

The result, out today, is a song that should be on the charts and every radio station. Simon is the forerunner of all the “girl singers” so popular now, but mostly write about relationships — the foundation of her career. But Simon’s recordings are far more complex musically and lyrically. They still resonate on many levels. “Share the End” — like Paul Simon’s “American Tune” — is a song for the ages.

Carly says: “In the original, I was reflecting on personal relationships, but in this version, I’m thinking more about what’s happening everywhere in the world—how to move forward while treasuring what’s behind us. Working with Paul, Peter, and Frank brought out a layered, almost cinematic quality to the song that feels like a natural progression of its story.”

The full lyrics are below. The new “Share the End” is on YouTube, Spotify, and all streaming venues. PS Rhino should do this with a whole newly updated “Anticipation” album.

Here come the priests, each one wailing and bemoaning
Lordy, they got their heads bowed down
Here come the madmen, they’re too excited for atoning:
“Burn the mosque, ” they’re shouting, “Burn it down!”
Save me a place, surround me with friendly faces
All of us have gathered here to share the end
To watch the world go up in flames
Please, Lord we’re not ready
Give us a day
Give us an hour
Here come the kings, Let’s dispense with their apologizing
Just bring on the acrobats and clowns
Here comes the rumble, Hang on for universal dying
Please ignore the baying of the hounds
Save me a place, surround me with deadly faces
All of us have gathered here to share the end –
To watch the world go up in flames
Please, Lord we’re not ready
Give us some time to work things out
Please, Lord we’re not ready
Give us a day
Give us an hour
Please, Lord we’re not ready
Give us some time to work things out
Please, Lord we’re not ready
Give us a day
Give us an hour
