Clive Davis Film Opens Today in NY, LA, Digital Soundtrack Features Rare Natalie Cole-Whitney Houston Track

OK, no one sent a press release but I figured this out on my own. If you buy the very nicely priced iTunes only-Apple Music soundtrack to “Clive Davis: Soundtrack of Our Lives” you get three rare recordings– Natalie Cole and Whitney Houston performing “This Will Be,” Aretha Franklin performing “I Knew You Were Waiting for Me” plus a never heard before Whitney Houston demo. The iTunes album is available today for $13.99. A shorter digital album goes to Spotify on Friday.

The movie “Soundtrack of Our Lives” opens today apparently in Los Angeles and New York. On October 3rd Chris Perkel’s documentary goes to iTunes and Apple Music exclusively. I assume one day there will be a DVD. There has to be as this is really the story of pop music as we know it. If you love music or were ever interested in the record business, this is a permanent chronicle of how pop music invaded the culture.

Last night there was a premiere screening and party in Los Angeles. Details to come…

RIP: Producer-Actor George Englund Was Cloris Leachman’s Husband, Joan Collins’ Lover, Marlon Brando’s Best Friend

george englundI am sad to report that George Englund passed away about ten days ago, on September 14th. He was 91 and had fallen. There’s been no announcement, but there is a family obituary. George was quite a figure in Hollywood, at the center of everything in his heyday– actor, director, producer, he was married to Cloris Leachman (1953-79)and was the father of her five children. He had an infamous affair with Joan Collins during that marriage. He was also Marlon Brando’s best friend. When Brando died in 2004, it was George who helped me get the scoop and write the announcement. I will be forever in his debt.

George had another connection to Hollywood: his mother was the character actress Mabel Albertson (ubiquitous on TV in the 60s, she played Samantha’s mother-in-law on “Bewitched”). His uncle was Jack Albertson, also a great actor known from the TV series “Chico and the Man” with Freddie Prinze. That’s a pretty good lineage.

cloris and georgeEnglund produced and directed a number of films and TV shows but was best known for directing “The Ugly American” (1963) starring Brando, and producing “The Shoes of the Fisherman” starring Anthony Quinn. In 1992, he was a production executive on “The Golden Girls” and helped usher in its ill fated spin off, “The Golden Palace.” He also wrote a very good TV movie about the tragic Challenger space shuttle in 1990 starring Karen Allen and Barry Bostwick.

His family obit reads:

A man of eloquence and wit, George is known for his towering intellect and legendary sense of humor. He had a tremendous store of poetry and song in him, and he gave beautiful voice to both. His mind was curious, caring and massive. George was in the process of completing his Autobiography (to be published). A movie about his life and friendship with actor Marlon Brando is also in development.

George’s loving Family and friends surrounded him when he died at his home in Palm Springs, with the beautiful view of the mountains he cherished. George’s Sister, two ex-wives, five children, seven grandchildren and one great-grandson survive him. Services are pending and a Memorial in George’s honor is being planned for November. British Filmmaker Ken Loach Won’t Say the Holocaust Happened, Calls Founding of State of Israel “Based on Ethnic Cleansing”

British filmmaker Ken Loach is in hot water this afternoon. He told the BBC’s Daily Politics presenter Jo Coburn that: “All history is our common heritage to discuss and analyse. The founding of the state of Israel, for example, based on ethnic cleansing is there for us all to discuss.”

This was a response to Coburn’s waffling on whether the Holocaust happened or not. Really. Loach recently signed a letter against Israel, joining a fringe group of celebrities like Roger Waters.

I’m not surprised about Loach. I’ve never liked his films. They are a total bore. But he’s a regular at Cannes no matter what he delivers. His films are like dead noise from a radio that’s lost the station’s signal. Perfect for inducing sleep.

Loach’s hidden anti-Semitism shouldn’t be a shock to anyone. He’s a huge supporter of British Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn, and even made a film about him.

Broadway: “Pretty Woman” with Songs from Bryan Adams, Sets Openings for Chicago, New York

“Pretty Woman” is finally in place to be a Broadway musical.

The Garry Marshall-directed hit film starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere is in place for 2018 with a Chicago tryout and a New York opening.

All of this will happen in 2018, with Chicago checked for a March 13, 2018 opening and Broadway set for one year from now.

Samantha Barks, who was so great in “Les Miserables” on stage and in the film, will play Vivian, the happy hooker. Tony winner Steve Kazee will take the Richard Gere role of Edward, the multi millionaire (by now a billionaire) who offers Vivian $3,000 to be his girlfriend for the weekend.

In the movie, SPOILER ALERT, they get together and marry. A better musical would have been called “What We Told the Kids.”

Anyway, Canadian songster and 80s rock star Bryan Adams has written the songs with long time collaborator Jim Vallance. Paula Wagner produces, Jerry Mitchell directs, and David Rockwell is designing the sets.

Review: Tom Cruise Scores a Hit with “American Made,” But There’s a Reason it May Not Fly

Good news and bad news for Tom Cruise. Doug Liman’s second film with him, “American Made,” which opens Friday, is a hit. Despite Scientology and all the other mishegos, Cruise rises to the occasion of playing real life adventurer Barry Seal, a TWA pilot who went to work for the CIA in the 1980s and had his life turned upside down in the South American drug wars.

“American Made” is a descendant of a long line of films from the mother ship, Martin Scorsese’s “GoodFellas.” It falls in line with recent films like “The Big Short,” “American Hustle,” and even Scorsese’s “Wolf of Wall Street.” Basically, a good guy is corrupted and narrates his own downfall. But most of the films of this type work, and I’m happy to say “American Made” does, too.

Will it sell to audiences, though? Even with an 88 on Rotten Tomatoes, “American Made” may have trouble. Around the world, the audience reaction seems mixed. I’m not going to tell you why now, but if “American Made” stumbles out of the box there’s a reason. I’m not saying it’s a good reason, but one you’ll understand in time.

Nevertheless, Liman has a way of working with Cruise that brings out the best in him. There’s some terrific filmmaking here. Cruise seems relaxed and relate-able, not at all as phony as he often comes through. He has a nice rapport with all the other actors, too, including Sarah Wright as his put upon gorgeous wife, and Domhnall Gleeson as his CIA contact. Caleb Landry Jones is on a roll with this latest part (see him in “The Florida Project” and “Three Billboards”).

Barry Seal has become almost a mythic figure in books and TV shows regarding the Medellin drug cartel and Pablo Escobar. Cruise and Liman ran the risk of re-stating the obvious with “American Made.” But instead they made something surprisingly fresh and resonant. And for Tom Cruise– everything else notwithstanding– it’s a little bit of a Renaissance.

Oprah Didn’t Bring New Viewers to “60 Minutes” Premiere, Same Number as Last Year

CBS really promoted the heck out of Oprah Winfrey joining “60 Minutes.” She was touted as a special correspondent by everyone on the show. They almost played a fan fare

But in the end, Oprah’s debut scored the same ratings as last year’s season opener– around 13.5 million. It seems the people who watch “60 Minutes” are the same year to year. But at least Oprah’s segment was pretty interesting. She talked to people in Michigan about Trump, and they pretty much seemed to like him. I’ll bet that shocks people (like me) on both coasts. They didn’t care about Russia. They just think Trump is a big F-U to all of us. One woman predicted Civil War.

“Star Trek: Discovery” played its first and last time on the network before heading off to CBS All Access on line. They drew around 8.5 million people. Frankly, I didn’t even know it was coming. It was just…there. But it seemed pretty interesting. Michelle Yeoh is terrific. Once “Discovery” heads to All Access we’ll never know what the ratings are.

Civil War at amFAR as Controversial Organization Turns Against Supporters in Power Grab

For years I’ve written about how crazy amFAR is. The organization started by Dr. Mathilde Krim and people like Elizabeth Taylor to raise research funds for AIDS was once all about saving people. Then it became about parties, celebrities, and exclusivity.

Now amFAR is having an open civil war and I’m not surprised. The crazy bunch who’ve slowly taken the group over is now attacking the two people who’ve kept the place going all these years– movie mogul Harvey Weinstein and retailer Kenneth Cole. Before this, the same people chucked out Sharon Stone, who’d literally put them on the map brandwise.

According to the New York Times, four board members are now battling Weinstein and Cole: Vincent Roberti, Mervyn Silverman, Arlen Andelson and Jonathan Canno. Their leader is said to be Roberti, a Connecticut developer and lobbyist who was acquitted in 1992 of burning down one his buildings. A 2012 Connecticut Post editorial described him as “a former Connecticut state representative, turned failed Bridgeport mayoral candidate, turned bankrupt developer, turned exonerated arson-for-insurance-scam suspect, turned big-time Washington, D.C., lobbyist and movie producer.” (His most recent entry on the imdb is a 2009 short film called “Asshole.”)

Add to that list Kevin Frost, the president of amFAR. You may remember Frost. He banned me from all amFAR events after I revealed that the organization paid Madonna’s charity, Raising Malawi, $1 million for her appearance at in 2010. (Madonna had never given a penny to amFAR previously and hasn’t since then either.) Frost didn’t like it either when I exposed his poor treatment of Stone, who’d valiantly led their annual auctions in Cannes to millions of dollars. She was ousted unceremoniously.

This gang had better be careful. They are not the simple but organized Elton John AIDS Foundation. (It should be noted that both Sir Elton and the late Elizabeth Taylor broke away from amFAR years ago and started their own foundations after amFAR was taken over by the current regime.) Weinstein and Cole are amFAR’s two most prominent goodwill ambassadors in the celebrity world Frost, et al. covet. So was Stone. Without them, amFAR as it works now would have a very empty tent come the annual Cannes fundraiser.

The very sketchy Global Citizen Festival– a rock concert for people to feel good about themselves– is on the air right now on MSNBC. The great Stevie Wonder is performing.

But Stevie doesn’t know about Global Citizen, which spends millions on rock concerts and celebrities but gives no money to actual people for poverty, hunger or AIDS.

Curious: Global Citizen says it’s sponsored by Gucci and a Gucci program called Chime for Change. Maybe they are, but not by the Gucci Foundation.

Federal tax filings for the Gucci Foundation from 2013, 2014, and 2015 show that the 501 c3 just has enough money its coffers for administrative purposes– around $7,000. There’s no sign of any donations to anything, no money in or out. And no mention of Chime for Change.

There is some remnant of Chime for Change on the internet. In 2014 they sold cheap headphones with their logo. They’re still floating around ebay for between $20 and $40.

In fact, Chime for Change seems to be a branding name for a campaign by UNICEF.

Gucci never was particularly charitable. A decade ago they invented the Gucci Foundation to collect money for Madonna’s first Raising Malawi foundation concert. No one ever has accounted for that money and didn’t go to Malawi. The money may have gone to the Kabbalah Center.

There is no record of a Gucci Foundation in the UK, by the way. And nothing for Chime for Change.

Meantime, MSNBC– Global Citizen’s broadcast partner– has cut into Stevie Wonder’s live show twice with long sets of commercials. Chris Martin of Coldplay, named a Global Citizen ambassador, played the I Heart Radio show in Vegas. And President Barack Obama declined an invitation to Global Citizen.
