Civil War at amFAR as Controversial Organization Turns Against Supporters in Power Grab

0

For years I’ve written about how crazy amFAR is. The organization started by Dr. Mathilde Krim and people like Elizabeth Taylor to raise research funds for AIDS was once all about saving people. Then it became about parties, celebrities, and exclusivity.

Now amFAR is having an open civil war and I’m not surprised. The crazy bunch who’ve slowly taken the group over is now attacking the two people who’ve kept the place going all these years– movie mogul Harvey Weinstein and retailer Kenneth Cole. Before this, the same people chucked out Sharon Stone, who’d literally put them on the map brandwise.

According to the New York Times, four board members are now battling Weinstein and Cole: Vincent Roberti, Mervyn Silverman, Arlen Andelson and Jonathan Canno. Their leader is said to be Roberti, a Connecticut developer and lobbyist who was acquitted in 1992 of burning down one his buildings. A 2012 Connecticut Post editorial described him as “a former Connecticut state representative, turned failed Bridgeport mayoral candidate, turned bankrupt developer, turned exonerated arson-for-insurance-scam suspect, turned big-time Washington, D.C., lobbyist and movie producer.” (His most recent entry on the imdb is a 2009 short film called “Asshole.”)

Add to that list Kevin Frost, the president of amFAR. You may remember Frost. He banned me from all amFAR events after I revealed that the organization paid Madonna’s charity, Raising Malawi, $1 million for her appearance at in 2010. (Madonna had never given a penny to amFAR previously and hasn’t since then either.) Frost didn’t like it either when I exposed his poor treatment of Stone, who’d valiantly led their annual auctions in Cannes to millions of dollars. She was ousted unceremoniously.

This gang had better be careful. They are not the simple but organized Elton John AIDS Foundation. (It should be noted that both Sir Elton and the late Elizabeth Taylor broke away from amFAR years ago and started their own foundations after amFAR was taken over by the current regime.) Weinstein and Cole are amFAR’s two most prominent goodwill ambassadors in the celebrity world Frost, et al. covet. So was Stone. Without them, amFAR as it works now would have a very empty tent come the annual Cannes fundraiser.

Sketchy Global Citizen Says It’s Sponsored by Gucci Foundation, But How? They Exist on Paper Only

0

The very sketchy Global Citizen Festival– a rock concert for people to feel good about themselves– is on the air right now on MSNBC. The great Stevie Wonder is performing.

But Stevie doesn’t know about Global Citizen, which spends millions on rock concerts and celebrities but gives no money to actual people for poverty, hunger or AIDS.

Curious: Global Citizen says it’s sponsored by Gucci and a Gucci program called Chime for Change. Maybe they are, but not by the Gucci Foundation.

Federal tax filings for the Gucci Foundation from 2013, 2014, and 2015 show that the 501 c3 just has enough money its coffers for administrative purposes– around $7,000. There’s no sign of any donations to anything, no money in or out. And no mention of Chime for Change.

There is some remnant of Chime for Change on the internet. In 2014 they sold cheap headphones with their logo. They’re still floating around ebay for between $20 and $40.

In fact, Chime for Change seems to be a branding name for a campaign by UNICEF.

Gucci never was particularly charitable. A decade ago they invented the Gucci Foundation to collect money for Madonna’s first Raising Malawi foundation concert. No one ever has accounted for that money and didn’t go to Malawi. The money may have gone to the Kabbalah Center.

There is no record of a Gucci Foundation in the UK, by the way. And nothing for Chime for Change.

Meantime, MSNBC– Global Citizen’s broadcast partner– has cut into Stevie Wonder’s live show twice with long sets of commercials. Chris Martin of Coldplay, named a Global Citizen ambassador, played the I Heart Radio show in Vegas. And President Barack Obama declined an invitation to Global Citizen.

Basketball Great Steph Curry Disinvited by Trump to White House After Trump Calls NFL Players “Sons of Bitches” in Speech

0

Donald Trump– president at the moment of the US– has disinvited basketball great from a White House visit with his team, the Golden State Warriors.

The result is a Twitter storm. Just prior to this, Trump attacked exiled NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick in what many consider a racist speech in Alabama last night.

“Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, you’d say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. Out! He’s fired,” Trump said to loud applause.

Trump added: “You know what’s hurting the game?” he asked. “When people like yourselves turn on television and you see those people taking the knee when they’re playing our great national anthem.”

On Twitter and among people with an IQ over 3, “those people” is clearly directed at black players who are taking the knee, and not standing for The Star Spangled Banner. Kaepernick and Curry are both African Americans.

Curry had stated earlier on Friday that he would decline the invite from the White House. “My views haven’t changed at all. I don’t know if anybody’s changed. But that’s where I stand right now,” Curry said on Friday during the Warriors’ press day. “I don’t want to go. That’s my nucleus of my belief.”

Trump is really taking some major risks now. Sports is bigger than politics, and he’s gambling on creating twin controversies in basketball and football. Second, as with President Obama, the people he’s attacking are black. As with John McCain– who he called a loser for being captured in the Vietnam War– Trump is creating enemies with long memories.

Bradley Cooper-Lady Gaga “Star is Born” Will Likely Open Very Early Cannes 2018 Film Festival

0

Warner Bros. has announced it’s moving Bradley Cooper’s take on “A Star is Born” up to May 18th, 2018 release.

My sources say that indicates a definite premiere in Cannes, and probably the opening night film. What glamour on the Croisette!

But listen: Cannes is moving up a whole week next year and will begin on Wednesday, May 9th! Sacre bleu! The festival should be starting on the 16th. not the 9th. Festival goers will be bringing rain coats, umbrellas, and sweaters. Talk about a cool film festival!

This past year, Cannes moved to the end of May, where it’s supposed to be. When it’s opened on days like the 12th, 13th, or 14th I can remember some pretty torrential rains. I have photos from recent years of Nicole Kidman amid seas of umbrellas!

Well, Lady Gaga will like arrive on the red carpet at the Palais des Festivals self enclosed in a rain proof outfit. Either way, Cannes 2018 is already guaranteed quite a celeb kick off!

Pop Fizz: Madonna Released a Live Album This Week and Only 3,848 People Bought It

0

Madonna released a live album last Friday. News to me. News to everyone, apparently.

The “Rebel Heart” Tour album sold just 3,848 CDs and downloads according to Buzz Angle and hitsdailydouble.com. It had no streaming that was reported.

Stranger, though, was that the album wasn’t released on Interscope, which put out the original “Rebel Heart” album. But maybe not so strange since “Rebel Heart” sold only 238,000 copies in the US. Madonna once sold millions of albums. (So did everyone.)

The live album was issued by Eagle Rock, a video company. Eagle Rock put it out as a standalone for audio. But they also sell a video package of CD/DVD/Blu-Ray that includes the live album.

Well, Madonna’s gone to Portugal so she doesn’t have to worry about all this. And she has hundreds of millions of dollars. So we won’t worry about her. But it’s a sign of the times, I guess.

Let’s Help Paul Thomas Anderson Choose a Title for His Much-Anticipated, Still Unnamed Daniel Day-Lewis Paris Fashion Film

0

Oscar prognosticating has begun, the internet is rampant with speculation what the Best Picture nominees will be, Best Actors and Actresses etc. It’s always amusing because many of the films being talked about have not been seen and little is known about them.

Among the ones we know: “Dunkirk,” “Detroit,” “The Shape of Water,” “Wind River,” “Molly’s Game,” “Roman J. Israel, Esq.,” “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” and “Call Me By Your Name.” I’m a big fan of “Baby Driver,” and would love to see it get some kind of awards action. Ditto “The Big Sick” and “The Beguiled.”

But the ones we don’t know about include Steven Spielberg’s “The Post,” about the Pentagon Papers; Clint Eastwood’s “The 15:17 to Paris,” and a movie with no title by Paul Thomas Anderson starring Daniel Day-Lewis.

The latter film has no title despite a release clock that’s ticking down. Little is known except DDL plays an Yves Saint Laurent type fashion superstar from the 1950s. According to people I’ve asked, he is not gay. So that’s one factoid. And the script is supposed to be excellent. Check two.

But what about a title? PTA is maybe having trouble with that, so I polled around to give him some suggestions. The original title was “Phantom Thread.” But that was awful and has been tossed. Immediately crossed off the list– “Fashion.” Or anything with “Fashion” in it. No one liked “The Golden Thimble” or “The Silver Thimble.” “Seams Like Old Times” also was rejected by friends. Even “Seams Like a Pattern.”

One idea: “Project Runway.” Taken. “Dress for Success” also taken. “Skirting the Issue.” Hmmm…”Inherent Taste”? No. “There Will Be Sewing”? Unt-uh. “Haute Nights?” Maybe. “Punch Drunk Sewing”? (I actually liked that one.) “Fashion Gangs of Paris”?

Will frogs rain down on fashion shows in Paris? Or Frogs? We don’t know. But somehow this untitled film could up end all the Oscar gamblers (but not Oscar Gamble, sports fans). Ideas? Send them to showbiz411@gmail.com.

Sean “Diddy” Combs Was the Only African American on Stage at Forbes Magazine’s 100th Anniversary

0

I was going to write this yesterday. But then I noticed tonight that Sean “Puff Daddy/P Diddy” Combs pointed it out himself. This week at the Forbes Magazine 100th Anniversary event at Chelsea Piers, Combs was the ONLY African American on stage in a sea of white haired old coots. (There was also a South African, which was nice, but doesn’t count.)

Combs started in the music business, where only Clive Davis really recognized his potential. Then he moved to fashion, where Ron Burkle totally got it. He branched out more and more, most importantly with Ciroc Vodka. Now he’s worth $820 million. He is worth much more than many of the people on stage.

It should be noted that in the Forbes official photos, Combs was put in the back and is just a little head bobbing up in the background. But he gets the last laugh. I’ve known “Puffy” for at least 20 years. He’s smarter than all those guys!

Exclusive: Jada Pinkett Smith, Disavowing Scientology, Is Attending High Holiday Services in Palm Desert, California

0

Actress Jada Pinkett Smith, disavowing Scientology, will be attending High Holiday services in Palm Desert, California. She is not Jewish. But Rabbi Andrew Bentley emailed me this message when I asked: “Just to confirm that Jada Pinkett Smith has attended our shabbat services, lit candles with us and has bought tickets and will be attending Yom Kippur and break the fast at Temple Sinai of Palm Desert.”

When I queried Rabbi Bentley what Jada’s interest was in all this, he responded:

“That’s between her and G-d. We enjoy having her and find her to be a lovely person.”

There was no word whether husband Will Smith or children Willow or Jaden will accompany her. The only connection Jada has to Temple Sinai is through her publicist, Karynne Tencer, who is a member.

Recently Leah Remini asserted that Pinkett-Smith was indeed a Scientologist, that she’d seen her a lot at the Celebrity Centre in Hollywood. This much is true: Will and Jada, for a while, were being actively recruited by Tom Cruise for Scientology. That’s when Remini may have noticed their participation. The Smiths started a private school in Calabasas, California that used Scientology study techniques. The first principal of the school instituted Scientology curriculum. (The school went belly up after a couple of years.) They donated money to Scientology organizations through the Will Smith Foundation. Will and son Jaden made a Scientology-oriented movie called “After Earth” that flopped and almost killed Will’s career.

But when Remini– who is bravely peeling back all layers of Scientology’s influence in Hollywood– made her assertion about Jada, the actress fought back. She posted: “I recently lit Shabbat candles with Rabbi Bentley at Temple Sinai… but I am not Jewish.I have prayed in mosques all over the world… but I am not a Muslim. I have read the Bhagavad Gita… but I am not a Hindu. I have chanted and meditated in some of the most magnificent temples on earth… but I am not a Buddhist. I have studied Dianetics, and appreciate the merits of Study Tech… but I am not a Scientologist.I practice human kindness, and I believe that we each have the right to determine what we are and what we are not. NO ONE ELSE can hold that power.”

Indeed, I’ve reported on the money the Smiths have donated to various religions and causes over the years. The most surprising of these was the connection to Scientology, which many consider a dangerous cult. But it may just be that the Smiths– Jada especially– is just a spiritual person trying everything. I hope she has an easy fast on Yom Kippur.

More on the Smiths and Scientology here and here and here.

Emmy Award Winner “SNL” Announces First 3 Sets of Hosts, Musical Acts Including Ryan Gosling, Pink, Jay Z, Gal Gadot

0

Fresh on the heels of multiple Emmy Award wins, “Saturday Night Live” has announced its first three sets of hosts and musical performers for the 2017-18 season.

September 30– Ryan Gosling (promoting “Blade Runner 2049”) and Jay Z

October 7– Gal Gadot and Sam Smith

October 14– Kumail Nanjiani (“The Big Sick”) and Pink

No word yet on Alec Baldwin reprising Donald Trump, but I’ll bet we see a lot of him. Also, Melissa McCarthy could return as Sean Spicer, although it would be great to see Cecily Strong as Sarah Huckabee Sanders. The Trump White House is so volatile that in all likelihood, Anthony Scaramucci will never be satirized. He’s already old news.

Box Office: “Wind River” Passes $30 Mil Mark, Turns Out to be Weinstein Company’s Potential Oscar Bid

0

You just never know around here.

While everyone’s everyone’s been writing about the death of the box office, potential Oscar movies disappointing, etc., there’s a little engine that could: “Wind River.”

The Weinstein Company drama passed $30 million last night and is has tremendous word of mouth. It’s not far fetched to say this might be their Oscar movie, maybe so more than “The Current War.” Another late fall release, “The Upside,” should be a commercial hit and big awards magnet for Golden Globes.

But “Wind River” is a little gem that just went out there and did its job. Taylor Sheridan wrote and directed, coming off his great screenplays for “Sicaro” and “Hell or High Water.” And here’s something to note– “Wind River” has now made more than “Hell or High Water.” That Oscar nominee was beloved, produced an Oscar nom for Jeff Bridges, and still only made $27 mil US and $10 mil international. “Wind River” is going to exceed both of those numbers.

Acting wise, don’t count out Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen. As a lot of other more hyped movies fall by the way side, Renner and Olsen look more and more like Oscar contenders. Right now, those crazy Oscar prognosticators– who get a lot wrong when all is said and done– are counting on movies they haven’t seen or crossing fingers for films that will not play wide and have very niche audiences.
