Review: “The White Lotus” Penultimate Episode: Nothing Much Happened But Slow Build Up to Finale

0

Not much happened tonight on the penultimate episode of “The White Lotus.”

There was no pay off of last week’s big incest story. The Ratliff brothers didn’t even share a scene.

There was so nervousness about sister and brother this time, with Piper and Lochlan getting uncomfortable. But thank God that was a bust, and Piper retreated to her room. (You could hear the audience echoing Parker Posey’s “Piper, no!”)

The big story was all about Walton Goggins’ Rick and pal Frank, played by Sam Rockwell, going on their murder mission. Rick brought a gun to meet Jim, the man his mother once told him killed his father. Jim is played by the great Scott Glenn, who bears a physical resemblance to Goggins. If Jim doesn’t turn out to be Rick’s father, who left the mother, I’d be surprised.

The best scenes were between Rockwell and Patravadi Mejudhon, the elegant Thai star who plays Hollinger’s wife, Sritala, a famed actress and owner of the hotel. Mejudhon lights up every scene. When she’s with Frank, she’s kittenish and easily impressed. Rockwell is magic once again, fawning all over her, freelancing to keep her busy. When he falls off the wagon, the results seem less dangerous than hilariously weird. Maybe next week he’ll be dressed up as an Asian woman.

Jason Isaacs’ Timothy is the most underwritten character. Knowing he’s going to jail and losing everything, all he does is walk around stoned and fantasize suicide – or murder of his wife or son. He mumbles from taking drugs and drinking. No one notices. Why wasn’t he written as pro-active or smart about his situation?

The most sinister part of the show was Belinda finally speaking to Greg/Gary. He offers her $100,000 not to rat him out to the US authorities. She says she has to think about it. He gives her the evil eye, setting up a red herring for the White Lotus about who gets killed in the final episode. Will Greg murder her? I don’t think so, but you never know.

If violence is coming, the participants are in two groups. One is the guard, Gaitok, who spots the hotel robbers at the fight. His girlfriend prods him to be more courageous, so maybe — since has one of the guns floating around — he’ll do something about it.

Or: One of the robbers, who’s now bedded Lauri (Carrie Coon) has a mean Russian girlfriend. She could come after Laurie. Or Jim’s goons might come after Rick, since he didn’t kill Jim but knocked him off his chair.

Regardless, at this point I’m not sure it matters. There’s no overarching theme to the season. So many of the beats and plotlines are retreads from the first two seasons. Piper and Lochlan wanting to stay in Thailand is the same as the kid in season 1 who remained in Hawaii. The hotel manager nervously sang tonight, same as the hooker in season 2.

In tonight’s episode the sensation Aimee Lou Wood, as Chelsea, had almost the same conversation she had last week with Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger) about him being soulless, and so on. Wood is a gem, it’s too bad she hasn’t had more to do than act shocked about Saxon. Let’s hope she’s not collateral damage.

Nothing great for Parker Posey tonight. Victoria has gained no insight into anything going on around her. Her own character was not advanced this week. She hasn’t even questioned what happened to her missing Lorazepam, or wondered if her husband’s total fog could have been caused by the pills. If she’s seen clues that her husband is a criminal or that her sons have had an unacceptable encounter, it has not been shown to the audience.

But there’s a lot of beautiful cinematography.

Next week will come what I feel will be the unsatisfying end of this soap opera. I don’t think of the main cast will die, but again, I might be wrong. I think Gaitok may die a hero, and that Rockwell’s Frank could go on to another season. I hope wherever the White Lotus is set next, the guests go into town and look around a bit more.

Wait: this week’s inside joke, TV star Jaclyn has a last name– Lemon– making her Jac Lemon, get it? Jack Lemmon. I always loved the story of Jack Lemmon taking his mother’s urn to the Ritz Carlton Bar in Boston for one last drink. Now there’s a story!

White Lotus: Carrie Coon Says Mike White Cut Backstory of Non-Binary Daughter After Trump Election

0

For “The White Lotus,” apparently gay incest was okay but possibly having a trans child with different pronouns was not.

In the new Harpers Bazaar, one my favorite actresses, Carrie Coon, reveals that sensitive material was tossed to the cutting room floor.

Coon reports that her character, Laurie, supposedly had a back story including a daughter at home going by they/them pronouns. She might have been trans. Laurie had to explain it to her friends — played by Michelle Monaghan and Leslie Bibb — and of course, they weren’t good with it.

Coon tells HB: “The season was written before the election. And considering the way the Trump administration has weaponized the cultural war against transgender people even more since then, when the time came to cut the episode down, Mike [White] felt that the scene was so small and the topic so big that it wasn’t the right way to engage in that conversation.”

It’s amazing that the graphically displayed sexual threesome involving two brothers passed muster, but this conversation did not. Is this why “White Lotus” feels so slow and dull this season? Very little happens (as we’ll see Sunday night) or otherwise feels timely or provocative. If only there had been more of this kind of thing instead of Jason Isaacs prolonged moping around.

Episode 7 airs tonight. I haven’t seen it, but the word is a little meh. Stay tuned…for 10pm and follow me on Twitter at @showbiz411.

PS Carrie Coon also plays Mrs. Russell on “The Gilded Age,” which will return soon. Mrs. Russell is a social climber extraordinaire, with little restraint at all.

“White Lotus” Ratings Down Almost 10% on HBO with Crazy Incest Episode

Did Morgan Wallen Use His Guitar as a Prop on “Saturday Night Live” Last Night for Two New, Lackluster Songs?

0

Is Morgan Wallen the problem?

The country star sang two songs on “SNL” last night including “I’m the Problem.” But did he play live guitar on them, or just play along”?

From the looks of the videos, his instrument was used as a prop around his neck.

There’s a little strumming but no indication that Wallen even attempted to ‘lip sync’ his guitar.

Five other musicians look like they’re miming their own playing.

The songs — “Just in Case” and “I’m the Problem” — were lackluster at best, and short.

Wallen also played his second number sooner than later in the usual spot on the show. He skedaddled when “SNL” ended. He may have already been home in Nashville by the time the after party began.

Did he sell records last night? Hard to say. The singles were already in the top 10, and haven’t cracked number 1.

Did he even want to be there? Didn’t seem like it. After all, he was banned by “SNL” during COVID.

Let’s go to the video tape:

CBS Sends a Signal to Trump Their Relationship with the Kennedy Center Honors Is Tenuous at Best

0

Just following up on my item from Friday.

Today the CBS Sunday Morning show ran a report on the dismantling of the Kennedy Center. Norah O’Donnell did the report admirably.

What was clear is that the relationship between the network — already strained by the Trump lawsuit again “60 Minutes” — is tenuous at best.

CBS has been broadcasting the Kennedy Center Honors for 41 years. The network sent the signal out this morning that that deal is pretty much over if things continue to deteriorate. The Tiffany network will not be showing the Walmart arts show.

O’Donnell tried to get someone from the Kennedy Center to go on record but no one — not even Trump lackey Richard Grennell — would answer.

She did interview ousted president Deborah Rutter, who made it clear that the Center is not “broke” and “woke” as Donald Trump says. O’Donnell did mention that the largest donor, David Rubenstein — was fired after giving $100 million.

Trump appointee Paolo Zampolli was interviewed. A real estate guy from New York with a long history of legal skirmishes, he’s recommending the addition of cafes, and sending art to the Space station. What that has to do with anything is unclear.

CBS could easily invoke a new show called the Lincoln Center Honors once its contract is over this December. New York and Lincoln Center would love it, and they’d have no trouble getting A listers involved.

As for the Kennedy Center, it’s not impossible to imagine Trump removing the name, or the family asking to have it removed for the time being. This is the opposite agenda of John and Jacqueline Kennedy, who made history by celebrating the arts in Washington.

Not Funny: White House Correspondents Group Cuts Comedian Amber Ruffin from Dinner Over Fear of Trump Reprisal

0

This year’s WHite House Correspondent’s Dinner will be purposely bland.

The WHCA has cancelled comedian Amber Ruffin from giving the annual stand up act entertainment at dinner.

Why? Cowardice, fear of reprisal from a president who has already banned the Associated Press from covering him, and rearranged coverage throughout the administration to exclude mainstream media and promote fringe, right wing groups.

It’s pretty pathetic. The WHCA is supposed to support free speech. Now they — like law firms and banks — are waving the white flag.

Ruffin, a player on Seth Meyers’ talk show — is hilarious. But she’s also a woman, and Black, the two things that scare Trump to death. (She’s also an accomplished writer of Broadway shows.)

The current head of the WHCA is 36 years old Eugene Daniels, who is also Black and looking to make a name for himself next with a show on MSNBC.

Daniels said the board of the WHCA voted unanimously not to have any comedic performances at the April 26th dinner.

“At this consequential moment for journalism, I want to ensure the focus is not on the politics of division but entirely on awarding our colleagues for their outstanding work and providing scholarship and mentorship to the next generation of journalists,” he said.

Curiously, the group’s website has no indication of the change and is still touting Ruffin as host (at 6pm Saturday).

Trump, who’s treated the Fourth Estate with no respect, and continually berates and belittles them during press conferences, is being let off the hook by Daniels. It’s a stunning decision.

Daniels said in his statement that the board was “re-envisioning” the dinner and that details are forthcoming. Will they just present awards to reporters and not let anyone speak about the current state of affairs ? My guess is members will feel betrayed by their organization. Ruffin certainly must. I’m curious to see if this is dealt with at all on Seth Meyers’ show this week. After all, it was his 2015 hosting of the dinner — during which he picked up apart Trump mercilessly — that gave the aspiring fascist the idea to run for president at all.

As for Daniels, let MSNBC know he has lost all credibility.

Box Office Friday: “Snow White” Finishes in 3rd Place As Disney Disaster Dies on Vine

“Snow White” is pretty much dead now. No friends from the forest can save her.

Yesterday, the Disney debacle finished in third place, losing to two new releases, “Working Man” and “The Chosen.”

These two are B movies at best, but managed to trounce “Snow White,” which now has just $56 million in the till.

Everything about “Snow White” is cursed at this point. Disney’s only shot is to somehow revive the Pasek/Paul songs next winter for the Oscars. But it will probably be too late for that.

Meantime, A24 can’t make anything out of “Death of a Unicorn.” The horror comedy has top talent like Paul Rudd and Jenn Ortega, but the box office is DOA. Total for Thursday and Friday a little under $2.8 million.

Go see “The Penguin Lessons” this weekend. That’s my advice.

“American Idol” Fell by 10% Last Week: Are Carrie Underwood’s Politics Dragging Season 23 Underwater?

0

Last Sunday’s “American Idol” sent to an all time low in the ratings.

The third episode of Season 23 dropped to 4.063 million, or 9.91% from the previous week.

That’s a loss of 500,000 viewers in one week.

What’s happening? Is Carrie Underwood the cause?

Many fans voiced unhappiness with Underwood after she sang at Trump’s inauguration. They swore not to watch the show again.

Others say on social media they find her dull.

Underwood’s politics are far from dull, however. Not only did she sing for Trump, but a decade ago she mocked Obamacare on the CMA Awards with Brad Paisley. Although this incident was long ago, the video of it has recently resurfaced. See below.

This week’s “American Idol” ratings will be scrutinized, I’m sure, to figure out the trouble.

Review: “Penguin Lessons” Is A Movie You Must See if You’re Over Marvel, And it Stars a Real Penguin

0

I reviewed Peter Cattaneo’s “The Penguin Lessons” for Neil Rosen’s PBS show, “Talking Pictures” and raved about it. (Should air in about 10 days.)

The extremely charming and well made film stars Steve Coogan, Jonathan Pryce, and an actual penguin. The latter may actually be up for Best Supporting Actor.

“Penguin Lessons” is released today, and if you’re an adult who’d like to see a real film with great charm, with nothing that will embarrass you or your companion, head to a theater immediately.

I’m warning you: this is a genteel film. No one flies around with a cape. There is no violence. Or sex, particularly.

Cattaneo based the movie on a memoir by Tom Michell published in 2016. It’s the true story of how Michell, an itinerant English teacher, arrived in politically savage Buenos Aires in 1976 at a posh boy’s school.

Coogan is 59 now, Michell was 24 when this happened to him. No big deal. In the film, Coogan is disillusioned with life. His child has died. The world is at war in many places but he is blissfully ignorant.

The class he’s assigned to is a little like the “Dead Poet’s Society.” But Cattaneo downplays that, and focuses on what happened  to Michell. He rescues a penguin from an oil slick and brings him back to his apartment. For real. This is not CGI. The penguin, who plays right to the camera, becomes Michell’s best friend.

The movie has overtones of “Babe” and “Born Free.” Don’t call PETA. The penguin — not to be confused with Batman’s Penguin — has a great time. Michell named him Juan Salvador Gaviota and he’s never in danger of any kind. He has a better rider on his contract than John Travolta in his heyday.

Jonathan Pryce is the crusty headmaster who eventually winds up having conversations with Juan Salvador. There’s a subplot about a school maid and her granddaughter. The latter is abducted by the Argentinian police and returns unscathed. That is the movie’s biggest leap. But since a penguin is acting in this movie, already your sense of reality has been stretched.

Coogan is a delight, as always, and the perfect sort of detached personality who gives the film some gravitas. Michell is not keeping the penguin because of some zealotry. He wants to give it to the local zoo, but it’s very rundown and would kill Juan Salvador’s soul. Meantime, the bird eats like crazy and defecates all over the apartment. Several people comment on the smell.

No Oscars here, but a real relief from the daily pain of the news. Very recommended.

PS My colleague, Bill McCuddy, jokes: “If the penguin does go to the Oscars, what will he wear?” A ‘penguin suit’ would be redundant!

Soap Suds: “Days of our Lives” Retiring Female Executive Producer Who Lasted 20 Months, Installing Male Successor

0

When Janet Drucker was made Executive Producer of the Peacock soap “Days of our Lives,” in August 2023, it was a big deal.

Drucker had been with the show since 1984. She was succeeding Albert Alarr, who’d been forced out after a litany of sexual harassmant claims and sued by one of the soap’s star, Arianne Zucker.

The word was the show would now be run by women.

Now Drucker is out after 20 months. She’s being replaced by Noek Maxam, her younger, male second in command. They say Drucker is retiring.

“Days of our Lives” is run by Ken Corday, the son of the couple who created the show in 1965, Betty and Ted Corday. He ran it so badly that “Days of our Lives” moved from broadcast TV on NBC to streaming on Peacock, where it often looks like summer stock. The sets are cheap, and the writing is more like a parody of soaps.

Still, it’s in production in some form, which is notable. One day someone will write a real behind the scenes story of what has gone on. No soap story will ever be that good, or full of more drama.

Zucker’s lawsuit has still not been settled.

CBS Sunday Morning Announces Report on the Troubled Kennedy Center — May Signal Network’s Break After 47 Years

0

The apocalypse may be at hand this weekend.

CBS Sunday Morning announced they will have a rare investigative piece. The subject: the Kennedy Center.

For 47 years, CBS has broadcast the Kennedy Center Honors. But with the current catastrophe engulfing the arts institution — and a looming contract negotiation — the network may be ready to face a nasty break.

Norah O’Donnell is talking with Deborah Rutter, fired after more than a decade as president; former National Symphony Orchestra artistic director Ben Folds; and board member Paolo Zampolli, about the Kennedy Center’s future.

Zampolli running the Kennedy Center is maybe the most horrifying aspect of all of this. He’s a Trump real estate crony who ran a questionable modeling agency and boasts to have introduced Trump to now missing wife, Melania.

Zampolli is better known for being on different sides of various lawsuits than arts management. He’s also had a colorful past with the United Nations in a wide range of capacities.

That CBS– not NBC or ABC — is investigating what’s happened at the Kennedy Center indicates one of two things: either they know the end has come to their relationship, or they’re trying to suck up to the new administration to keep the specials going. It’s hard to imagine O’Donnell carrying out the second option, but we’ll never forget her shocking “60 Minutes” piece on Saudia Arabia’s Prince MBS Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud in 2018, six months before Jamal Khashoggi, the Saudi dissident journalist, was chopped up.

If CBS loses — or gives away — the Kennedy Center Honors, there are plenty of people waiting to take over. Amazon Prime, owned by Jeff Bezos, would be there in a second. Bezos already has deals with Trump and would find this a feather in his cap.

Also ready to step in would be Trump pal Rupert Murdoch, who’d consider the KCH — with Trump as host, as Trump has suggested — a prestigious addition to Fox. Of course, the potential honorees– country singers, right wing athletes, and Christian entertainers — would be right up Fox’s alley.

So this should be a bigger Sunday show than “White Lotus.”
