Alicia Keys is kind of on a roll right now. Waiting for her new album she’s released the great song, “Underdog,” and a couple of other new ones including “Gramercy Park.”
Today, for Juneteenth, Alicia has recorded a song she didn’t write– a rarity. “Perfect Way to Die” is gorgeous and poignant, written by Sebastian Kole, who should be a star already. He’s got a 2016 album out on Motown Records. Please, someone over there, do something for him.
I hope Alicia includes this on her album. Her performance, as always, is top notch. The song is incredibly relevant. It reminded me of the play and movie Kerry Washington starred in recently called “American Son.”
Sir Ian Holm — who’s gone at age 88 — was a keeper. His Oscar nomination came in 1982, for “Chariots of Fire.” He was one of the few stars whose career just kept getting bigger and bigger. He had memorable turns in so many movies– “Greystoke,” “Brazil,” “Dance with a Stranger,” he played Polonius in Franco Zefferelli’s “Hamlet” (to bolster Mel Gibson).
I think his zenith came in 1997 with “The Sweet Hereafter,” maybe the saddest movie ever made. He’s absolutely brilliant as the lawyer dealing with the parents of drowned schoolchildren from a bus accident.
Of course, Ian Holm was then four years away from his greatest success, playing Bilbo Baggins in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. That’s what he’ll be remembered for. Then came his Parkinson’s diagnosis and a slow retreat from acting. I interviewed him many times and he was a delight, one of those great real people you looked forward to seeing all the time. I’ve missed him the last few years, and will always stop now to watch him when his visage appears on screen. Rest in peace.
I stand corrected he played Napoleon three times in Napoleon In Love, Time Bandits and The Emperor's New Clothes. (Thanks @MilesWattsFilm) https://t.co/5JKLZ4Kdw3
Ian Holm took a chance on me and said yes to being in “Garden State” when I had yet to make any other films. He could not have been more supportive and kind and humble. I am so honored I got the opportunity to work with an actor of his legendary caliber. Rest In Peace. pic.twitter.com/lRJV5aVEJx
An accusation against a member of the cast of a big movie planned for fall could torpedo the whole project.
The accusation, against Ansel Elgort, a popular young actor, is alleged on Twitter by a girl named Gabby with no last name and not much to back it up. But social media being what it is, word is traveling fast.
Elgort plays Tony, the romantic lead, in Steven Spielberg’s updated “West Side Story” coming this Christmas from Disney (via Fox). Elgort was the actor who I actually mentioned for the Tony role (although believe me, that meant little). He’s had a hot career at age 25, most notably in Edgar Wright’s “Baby Driver” and the teen weeper, “The Fault in our Stars.”:
The #Metoo world is so loaded right now that every allegation becomes fact instantly. Here there are few facts other than “gabby” posting her claim. She’s also posted a photo of her and Elgort, and a screen shot of texts. Neither of those things is evidence of anything.
There is no comment as yet from Elgort’s reps.
Gabby, whoever she is, says Elgort assaulted her in 2014 when she was 17 years old. He would have been 19 or 20. She wrote: “It’s a lot for me to post this but I think it’s time I finally talk about my story of me being sexually assaulted. I need to heal and I want others to know they’re not alone…All the hate is fine because I know my story and the only reason for me posting it is to help people who I know went through something like this whether that be with a celebrity or not. As for the support I’m so thankful for you all…So many of you have dmed me your stories whether that’s with him or just in general. This is the reason why I tweeted what I did. I’m crying at work I’m so fucking thankful for you all. You’re not alone…Also the point of me posting my story was so other people can feel safe and can talk about their stories. It isn’t to “press charges “ or for “clout” simply be nice to others you never know wtf someone is going through or what they have to live with”
Since the postings, Gabby has gone radio silent. She’s also made her Instagram account private.
Is it true? Is it a false claim? And will it matter? We’re waiting word from Elgort’s rep, and further comment from “gabby.” Either way, the story is tragic for everyone involved. Social media without verification is like a bomb always waiting to go off. In this case, it’s about the two people at the center of the story, and also about the fate of this movie. You’ll recall how a couple of years ago, Nate Parker’s career was wrecked and his movie, “The Birth of a Nation,” became like Kryptonite after a scandal in his past was revealed.
When you go to an AMC Theater soon, you’ll have to wear a face mask.
This is AMC’s new policy after telling Variety yesterday that only employees would wear masks. AMC said it didn’t want to get “political.”
After Variety’s story came out yesterday, I emailed Ryan Moonan from AMC and asked if the company would include wording on their tickets our their website in which customers waived the right to sue if they felt they became ill at an AMC theater. The pr guy didn’t respond.
This morning, AMC reversed course and announced their new plan. If you don’t bring a mask, they’ll sell you one for a buck. The mask will be required. How this will work for eating and drinking is beyond me. Also, couples on a date night will have to smooch discreetly.
But look, you have to wear a mask in close quarters during this time. There’s no way around it. And AMC saw quickly how people responded. No mask, no movie.
Here’s their statement:
At AMC, we have been consulting with top scientists and health experts to create a broad, sweeping, far-reaching health and safety effort to make AMC Theatres safe for our guests and associates when our theatres reopen in July. Among many elements of that comprehensive plan was a requirement for our associates all to wear masks nationwide, as well as a requirement for our guests all to wear masks in the many parts of the country that will require it. In those areas of the country where masks will not be required, we nonetheless planned to strongly encourage mask usage by guests, and fully expected that the vast majority would do so. That policy on guest mask usage, which is directly comparable with our major competitors and many other highly regarded retailers, was announced yesterday afternoon.
“This announcement prompted an intense and immediate outcry from our customers, and it is clear from this response that we did not go far enough on the usage of masks. At AMC Theatres, we think it is absolutely crucial that we listen to our guests. Accordingly, and with the full support of our scientific advisors, we are reversing course and are changing our guest mask policy. As we reopen theatres, we now will require that all AMC guests nationwide wear masks as they enter and enjoy movies at our theatres. The speed with which AMC moved to revise our mask policies is a reflection of our commitment to the safety and health of our guests.
“We will constantly monitor the scientific community’s latest thinking as to the efficacy of mask usage. We also will be looking at the varying health conditions in specific localities around our theatres all across the country. This will help us to determine what our mask policy will be as we go forward, as well as to make any other needed changes to this policy. Guests coming to our theatres may bring their own masks of course, but for those who do not have one, masks will be available at our theatre box offices at a nominal $1.00 price. Those who are unwilling to wear a mask will not be admitted or allowed to stay.”
It’s not a surprise but Bob Dylan has set a record in his career.
The 79 year old Nobel Prize winner’s first album of new material in eight years, “Rough and Rowdy Ways,” has debuted today at number 1 on Amazon and on iTunes.
Arriving on a wave of rave reviews, “R&R” is set to be Dylan’s biggest album ever. And it comes at a time when there’s not a lot else to divert attention away from him.
But today’s chart is notable for having three other albums in the top 10 all by quality musicians: John Legend, Jason Mraz, and Neil Young.
Young’s “Homegrown” album is just now being released after going on the shelf in 1975. It’s an important missing link in the Neil Young catalog.
The Dylan album is a luxe experience of 10 long songs dense with textured language and pop references. It may take a few listens for people under 30 who are used to the crap pop of the last decade. You can’t be looking at your phone, at Facebook, or texting idiotic emoji’s while you’re listening to “Rough and Rowdy Ways.” You have to listen.
I’m about four hours late to this story because I was watching Ivy Meeropol’s excellent documentary about the very evil Roy Cohn, Donald Trump’s mentor, on HBO. And then I stayed to watch Hugh Jackman and Allison Janney in a terrific film called “Bad Education.”
And while I was watching “Bad Education,” the story of the latest awful thing Donald Trump has done started popping up everywhere. Apparently he Tweeted out a fake video on his account. The video was actually Fake News. Someone manipulated a real news story about two little toddlers, black and white, greeted each other with an enthusiastic embrace on the street. It really happened, and many news outlets reported it the other day.
But the manipulated version added fake chyron from CNN, turned in into a story of hate, so that the headline is “Terrified Todler Runs from Racist Baby.” Todler is spelled wrong. Whoever worked it up dressed it as if it had been a CNN story. It was all fake. A woman named Amy wrote to me on Twitter and said it was just a joke, no one should take it seriously. I am afraid not just for her sanity, but her a moral compass that doesn’t exist.
But this was Tweeted by the President of the United States. He thought it was funny. It’s a racist joke, and he thought it was funny. He thought it was okay to present it under his aegis as a “real” video. Donald Trump is a very sick man. He’s angry that LGBTQ people now cannot be fired from jobs because of their sex or gender preference. He’s horrified that DACA people– literally 700,000 young people — now have the right to stay in the United States. And now this. He’s a demented, sick person who must be voted out of office in November. How could anyone in their right mind want him to represent us? He’s morally and mentally debased.
Basically, he is so demented that he hates everyone.
It’s been four hours since this started. In that time, no one in the White House has taken down this Tweet. What does that say about these people? Have they lost their minds, if they had minds to begin with? I am thoroughly nauseated. I hope you are, too.
The people or person who made the video is called Carpe Donktum. Twitter has added a warning that their video is “manipulated” but didn’t remove it. I can’t believe Jack Dorsey has let this go on so long. It’s very disappointing.
Bruce Willis has been spending the pandemic lockdown in Hailey, Idaho at his former home with Demi Moore and their adult daughters and their boyfriends. At one point Bruce’s second wife, Emma, came for a stay with their two little girls. Emma and the girls returned to Los Angeles in May. But it seems like they were back in Idaho today for Emma’s birthday.
The entrepreneur business owner posted a family picture to Instagram today. She wrote: “It really was a happy birthday for me.” Everyone in the picture looks happy. Will Bruce return to LA or remain in Idaho? That’s the $64,000 question. The guy in the back with the baseball cap is Steve Eads, Bruce’s producing partner and major domo. Happy Birthday, Emma!
In a strange twist of fate, two rock stars turn 78 years young today. Paul McCartney and superstar producer Richard Perry share a birthday. This is not unlike Elton John and Aretha Franklin, who were born on March 25th, but they were in different years.
McCartney, you may have heard of him, was in a group called the Beatles, and then in one called Wings. He’s considered a pretty successful singer songwriter. Actually, the most successful singer-songwriter in pop history. So there.
Next month Paul is releasing an expensive box set, with less dear iterations, of his great 1997 album, “Flaming Pie.” I listened to it last night on Spotify, and it’s a real gem in the McCartney oeuvre. There isn’t a dud of a track, they are all terrific. The pie is delicious.
Paul and Richard Perry are old mates. Among Richard’s great successes — and there are so many — was gathering up the members of the Beatles for Ringo Starr’s classic eponymous 1973 album. Three years after their wrenching break up, the group is back together, singing, playing, writing. When Perry publishes his memoir later this year, called “Cloud Nine,” he’ll have all the stories about those amazing sessions.
Oh yes, among Perry’s other credits: just about all the hits for Carly Simon, Harry Nilsson, Ringo, the Pointer Sisters, Leo Sayer, then later Rod Stewart, not to mention Fats Domino and Ray Charles. Barbra Streisand’s only rock hit, “Stoney End,” came courtesy of Richard Perry.
Paul was born in Liverpool, Richard was born in New York. But there was something magically musical in the air on June 18, 1942. Happy birthday, gentlemen!
Here’s “Six O’Clock,” the song Paul wrote, and played on for “Ringo”:
And here’s a little hit Richard Perry produced for Carly Simon. Paul and Linda McCartney sang back up on Carly’s album, “No Secrets.”
Nick Cordero’s wife, Amanda Kloots, took live questions over Instagram last night. She keeps an upbeat visage, but the news isn’t very good.
Kloots says Nick has lost 65 pounds since the illness began 77 days ago. The weight loss is due to muscle atrophy. He is awake but can’t speak or move. He communicates, she says, by looking up or down for “no” or “yes” but can’t blink. Nick’s blood pressure “is all over the place,” she says, and has been hard to get under control. She says he’s been treated with a super version steroid much stronger than dexamethasone, which has been in the news this week.
Kloots says she’s told her husband about his leg amputation and “they’re doing amazing things with prosthetics, and that’s it.” Her communication with him is over Face Time, which is set up by the nurses at Cedars Sinai. Kloots says she’s told him about people “he doesn’t even know” singing his song “Live Your Life” all over the world. She’s shown him pictures of their 1 year old son, Elvis.
At one point, Nick’s family was summoned from Canada because Kloots says they were told he wasn’t going to make it. Cordero’s mother is still there with her in a house “lent to them by a friend.” She doesn’t mention that the house belongs to actor Zach Braff, who starred with Cordero on Broadway in “Bullets Over Broadway.”
The house must be pretty packed since Kloots’ family is also living there. And that can’t be easy. Kloots’s mother Tweeted screeds against Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama back in 2015-2016. She’s not a wallflower when it comes to politics, which wouldn’t go over that well in Laurel Canyon.
Amanda Kloots keeps her hopes up, which is admirable. She needs a miracle. Everyone everywhere hopes she gets one, and soon.
There are so many “TV shows” that the Television Academy has just announced some serious changes to Emmy nominations. And they did it at 11pm Eastern!
There will now be as many as 8 nominees per category. And this does make sense, I guess, since so many shows and actors have been routinely left out of the mix. Let’s see if this increases diversity or just adds more of the same. Issa Rae, you’ve got a chance now! We’re voting for you many times.
Here’s the release:
The Television Academy today announced additional rules changes for the 72nd Emmy® Awards competition, including a restructuring of how nominees are selected in each category.
To align the nominations selection process across all awards categories and to allow for more inclusiveness in the recognition of excellence, the number of nominees per category will now be based on the number of submissions in each category. Emmy submissions for 2020 have increased by 15% over the previous competition year.
“The increase in submissions is a reflection of the number of new voices, new television platforms and a tremendous growth in content from existing platforms across our industry,” said Television Academy Chairman and CEO Frank Scherma. “Despite production suspension resulting from COVID-19, there is a wealth of excellent work submitted for this year’s competition.”
The number of nominations in a category will now be determined using the following criteria:
1-19 submissions: A sliding scale between zero to 4 nominations
20-80 submissions: 5 nominations
81-160 submissions: 6 nominations
161-240 submissions: 7 nominations
> 240 submissions: 8 nominations
Comedy and Drama Series categories will have eight nominations each, regardless of the number of submissions received. Paired performer categories (i.e., supporting actor comedy and supporting actress comedy) will have parity in the number of nominations.
Finally, this new rule eliminates the previous 2% rule, which specified that in categories with five nominees, if the fifth and sixth top vote-getters were within 2% of each other, both would be nominated.
