Listen (Watch) to Chrissie Hynde’s Gorgeous 7 Minute Take on Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Fall Apart On Me Tonight”

0

While we wait for a new Pretenders album this Friday. Chrissie Hynde and guitarist James Walbourne have released their 7th song in their “Dylan Lockdown” series on YouTube. “Don’t Fall Apart on Me Tonight” is the closing masterpiece on Bob Dylan’s “Infidels” album. Chrissie has a way of making her records flow. This is a beautiful take. I do hope one day all these Lockdown performances are put in a collection of their own.

Meanwhile, no one– at BMG, at the Pretenders management– can supply information on Friday’s release of “Hate for Sale.” I’ve sent all the emails I can. No one involved with it seems to care one way or another. So we’ll just wait til Friday and see if it pops up on Spotify. This is the new NEW. And you wonder why music sales are so low. Don’t get me wrong. The album could be the talk of the town. Or just a mystery achievement.

Donald Trump Agrees with Chuck Woolery, Former Host of “Love Connection,” Over Dr. Fauci, CDC, and Scientists

This morning, the president of the United States agreed on Twitter with has been game show host Chuck Woolery over Dr. Fauci, the CDC, scientists and professionals. Woolery hosted low rent game show “The Love Connection” sometime in the distant past.

Woolery wrote: “The most outrageous lies are the ones about Covid 19. Everyone is lying. The CDC, Media, Democrats, our Doctors, not all but most ,that we are told to trust. I think it’s all about the election and keeping the economy from coming back, which is about the election. I’m sick of it.’

He added: “There is so much evidence, yes scientific evidence, that schools should open this fall. It’s worldwide and it’s overwhelming. BUT NO.”

If Woolery is on the Game Show Network — I don’t know if he is — he should be removed at once. If Trump is President– same thing.

Washington Redskins Announce Dropping Their Racist Name and Logo On Letterhead with Racist Name and Logo

0

It’s hard to give up the “old ways,” as Bradley Cooper sang in “A Star is Born.”

And so it is for the Washington Redskins. They announced they are dropping their racist name and logo this morning. The press release came on stationery featuring… their racist name and logo.

I mean, just so we don’t forget what it all looked like.

One of the new names they’re considering is “Red Skin Potatoes.” That way they can call each other “Bud” and there’s a beer tie in. I joke, but you never know.

John Travolta Announces Death of Wife Kelly Preston, “Jerry Maguire” Actress, Mother, Devoted to Scientology

0

John Travolta has announced on Instagram the death of his wife of 28 years, Kelly Preston. Preston was an actress who was well known for her roles in “Jerry Maguire,” among other films. She leaves two children, Ella and Ben. Her son, Jett, died a few years ago. Preston, like Travolta, was devoted to the cult of Scientology. She took at least 25 courses from 1988 to 2015. Her last course was to become an OTVIII, or an Operating Thetan. That’s when you reach “Spiritual Freedom” by experiences past lives.

For Travolta, this is really a terrible tragedy on so many levels. His first great love, as he describes her, Diana Hyland, died of cancer in the early 1980s. He and Kelly lost son Jett. Condolences to their family and friends.

Travolta wrote: “It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you that my beautiful wife Kelly has lost her two-year battle with breast cancer. She fought a courageous fight with the love and support of so many. My family and I will forever be grateful to her doctors and nurses at MD Anderson Cancer Center, all the medical centers that have helped, as well as her many friends and loved ones who have been by her side. Kelly’s love and life will always be remembered. I will be taking some time to be there for my children who have lost their mother, so forgive me in advance if you don’t hear from us for a while. But please know that I will feel your outpouring of love in the weeks and months ahead as we heal.
All my love, John”

Lisa Marie Presley’s Son, Ben, Dies of Suicide, Age 27, Like Family Had Been Involved with Scientology, Taken Courses

0

Earlier today it was reported that Ben Keough, the 27 year old son of Lisa Marie Presley, had committed suicide. Ben was the grandson of Priscilla Presley and the late mega star Elvis Presley. His sister was actress Riley Keough.

According to reports, Ben shot himself in a house in posh Calabasas, California.

Priscilla and Lisa Marie have each been for a long time associated with the cult of Scientology. Danny Keough as Lisa Marie’s first husband, which she followed with short marriages to Nicolas Cage and to Michael Jackson. Danny Keough was a very active Scientologist, taking two dozen courses from at least 1989 to 2005.

Riley, who’s won accolades as an actress in many projects, has no published history with Scientology. But her brother Ben took classes at least in 2004 and 2014, even as Lisa Marie tried to break free of the cult. It’s unclear what her relationship is to them now, although she still promotes one of their phony charities on her website.

After Keough, Lisa Marie married one more time, for 10 years, to Michael Lockwood, divorcing him in 2016 after having twins. At one point she claimed she was broke after selling the rights to Elvis’s name and likeness. After making a few albums of her own, she’s been fairly low profile the last couple of years.

Lisa Marie’s manager Lisa’s manager, Roger Widynowski, said in a statement:  “She is completely heartbroken, inconsolable and beyond devastated but trying to stay strong for her 11 year old twins and her oldest daughter Riley. She adored that boy. He was the love of her life.”

Elvis Presley died of a drug overdose that caused a heart attack, on August 17, 1977. He was 42, and his legacy has hung like a shadow over his family ever since then.  The picture here was taken three years ago at Graceland on the anniversary of Elvis’s death. That’s Ben, 24, with the curly hair. A weird way to honor granddad? You decide.

PS The street where this happened looks like the fictional “Knots Landing” from the TV show. Yikes!

Melissa Etheridge, Cheap Trick, Charlie Puth, Marilyn McCoo, Charlie Wilson, Alan Parsons, Gavin DeGraw Help Hollywood Quarantunes Zoom Up $100,000 for Musicares

0

WME agent Richard Weitz and daughter Demi raised $100,000 last night in their weekly four hour Zoom call that had around 400 guests and what seemed like 400 stars.

As usual Clive Davis served as Musical Director, with Tracey Jordan of SiriusXM helping wrangle the talent. “Regulars” included Jimmy Jam Harris, Sherry Lansing, Carole Bayer Sager, and record producer Kerry Brown kept the musical performances going even though it’s little like herding cats on Zoom.

The performers as usual were a wild gang: Charlie Puth, Cheap Trick, Charlie Wilson, Gavin DeGraw, international sensation Juanes, Alan Parsons, famed pianist Mike Garson, Melissa Etheridge, Chloe x Halle, Broadway’s Norm Lewis, Andy Karl and his wife Orfeh (who if they really let loose would shake the whole Zoom system!). They all spoke and sang from their bedrooms, living rooms, basements– live!

There were some pop-ins, too, from LLCool J and Grammy chief Harvey Mason, Jr.

For donating a lot and being extra generous, party guests got their money’s worth, I’d say. When Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr of the Fifth Dimension sang a perfect “Up Up and Away” pretty much everyone kvelled like mad and cheered like crazy. They also honored Whitney Houston for Clive with “I Believe in You and Me,” and Marilyn sang a little bit of “Saving All My Love for You” acapella. (Trivia note: She recorded it before Whitney!) Marilyn is one of our greatest singers ever, but Billy is really an unsung hero. He could have had a solo career easily. All the 5th Dimension were so talented. PS Jimmy Jam “fanboyed” all over them!

But I digress.

Over the four hours, Robin Zander led Cheap Trick through their hits and was hilarious. How did they get their name? They went to a Slade concert, which had a lot of special effects. “I said, they used every cheap trick in the book,” recalled Zander, and thus a new band was born. “Surrender” still kills.

Melissa Etheridge came on toward the end, she lost a kid two months ago. She’s a trooper. She dedicated “Me and Bobby McGee” to Clive as a tribute to Janis Joplin. They could release it as a single, and should. Mindblowing. Also, a medley of Melissa’s “Come to My Window” and Janis’s “Piece of My Heart.” I could listen to Melissa Etheridge all day. When Clive heaped praise on her, she nearly fainted.

So you get the idea. This was maybe the 17th or 18th of these Saturday Zoom parties. They let me in so I can tell you about it, but it’s about raising lots of  money for great causes. The Weitzes have pulled together over $6 million so far, which is literally amazing. Richard Weitz as the main host is indefatigable. He says on every call — I paraphrase– “24 hours ago we had no one.” His 17 year old daughter, Demi, has so much poise and smarts. There’s a rumor she’s going to get her own podcast now. I’ll listen!

Who’s next? I heard a rumor that Al Stewart may be in the mix. Alan Parsons– who only engineered Beatles and Pink Floyd albums– told Clive last night that he was the one who put the horns on “Year of the Cat,” turning it from a folk song into “Casablanca” for the ears. And who knows? The world is their oyster.

PS If I understood him correctly, Charlie Wilson said he never got paid anything for his work with the Gap Band. It was only after he met his manager and went solo that things changed. He is very very cool. He also sang “You Dropped a Bomb on Me” spontaneously!

PSS Gavin DeGraw is still the same 20 years after I met him. Affable, fun, and so talented. Clive signed him after seeing him play at Wilson’s, a great club back in the day. Debbie Wilson was Gavin’s manager. Those were the days!

Broadway Star Nick Cordero’s Family Has A “Small Memorial” for Actor Who Died of COVID Related Issues at Age 41

0

Nick Cordero’s wife, Amanda, reports that the family had a small farewell yesterday for the beloved actor, who died of COVID related issues at age 41. Amanda writes: “I said, “Nick would have wanted this to be a celebration. Let’s try to laugh, share great stories and sing for him and to his memory.” He would have loved it. It was beautiful and perfect. His spirit was definitely there.”

We had a small memorial yesterday with close family and friends. I said, “Nick would have wanted this to be a celebration. Let’s try to laugh, share great stories and sing for him and to his memory.” He would have loved it. It was beautiful and perfect. His spirit was definitely there. We listened to the song, I’m Here, from The Color Purple. Nick and I saw this show on Broadway years ago and we left the theater in tears, speechless. As it was being played last night the lyrics in the second half of the song hit me hard. Truly, I am scared. Scared of my new normal, of the pain, the loss and being strong enough to get through it. But, I know Nick is up above routing for me, believing in me and hoping for me. He wants me to LIVE this new life and he wants me to be the best version of myself for our son. I promised him in the hospital that I would try to do that. So, when I heard these lyrics yesterday I thought, “Ok. When I’m doubting if I can get through this, I’m playing this song. It will be my motto.” This is a long journey ahead and a down road I never thought I’d be on. No one can tell me how to do it, I have to do it. I may do things right, I may do them wrong. There isn’t a perfect way. One day, one step at a time. I have faith that God is leading the way and that Nick is our angel. In case you don’t know this song and are also in need of a motto, here are the lyrics. “I'm gonna take a deep breath. Gonna hold my head up. Gonna put my shoulders back, And look you straight in the eye. I'm gonna flirt with somebody When they walk by. I'm gonna sing out . . . Sing out. I believe I have inside of me Everything that I need to live a bountiful life. With all the love alive in me I'll stand as tall as the tallest tree. And i'm Thankful for everyday that i'm given, Both the easy and hard ones i'm livin'. But most of all I'm thankful for Loving who I really am. I'm beautiful. Yes, I’m beautiful, And I’m here.”

Frustration for Members of One Direction as Harry Styles Soars, Louis Tomlinson Leaves Simon Cowell’s Management at Last

Just as the other members of NSync discovered when Justin Timberlake took off on his own, the balance of One Direction is struggling.

Louis Tomlinson is part of One Direction, just as Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne are, and Zayn Malik was before he quit the band.

But their solo careers, other than Styles, have not been easy campaigns.

Today, Tomlinson announced he was finally leaving the management of Simon Cowell, who he’s been with his whole time since first appearing on “The X Factor” before One Direction existed.

Tomlinson wrote on Twitter: “Hope everyone is doing ok! Just wanted to let you know that Syco Music and I have agreed to part ways. I’m really excited for the future and to be back in the studio writing the next album. Can’t wait to finally see you all on tour!! Stay safe and see you soon, Louis x

Like Horan and Payne, not to mention Malik, Tomlinson must be frustrated. He’s made good records, done the touring, and nothing has clicked. His debut album, “Walls,” released this past January, has been a sales dud. It came out on Cowell’s Sony label Syco and the revived Sony/Arista Records, selling just 42,800 CDs and downloads, a total of 67,800 including streaming (according to Buzz Angle/Alpha Data).

Horan has had slightly better luck, not much, and same for Payne. Malik’s career right now is a disaster, with one sorta hit album and single, and then an utter bomb.

Styles, meanwhile, could not be doing better. Managed by Irving Azoff’s powerhouse group, Styles has blossomed as a pop and fashion star. He’s not even as talented a singer or songwriter as some of his bandmates– Horan is miles better– but that doesn’t matter. Through clever marketing and real attention to detail, Styles has followed Timberlake into the rare category of Rock Star, well, Pop Star with capital letters.

In the last few weeks, Styles’s second album, “Fine Line,” has jumped back into the top 10 after a so-so launch. The album has been aided by a hit single called “Watermelon Sugar” that makes “Sugar Sugar” by the Archies seem heavy. But it’s worked, as his androgynous projection of being sexually available to everyone. He wears dresses and make up, flies through the air in his videos, and smiles widely through all of it. (And the records are really, really embarrassingly awful.)

Tomlinson is now off Cowell’s label, but he can probably remain at Arista, which needs name stars as it rebuilds in its new incarnation. But will any of the One Directioners aside from Styles ever take off? That’s yet to be determined.

Claudia Conway, 15, is Back on Twitter, Throws Dad George Under the Bus, Says She Won’t Talk About Family Anymore

0

Rebel Yell: Fifteen year old Claudia Conway is back on Twitter. We thought it was her reviled mother, Kellyanne, who took her phone and social media privileges. But now Claudia throws her dad, good guy (maybe) George under the bus, and says it was him.

Now Claudia, who commented on her parents’ “Failed marriage” before she was pulled off Twitter, says no more stuff on the family. She does call Vice President Mike Pence a “closeted homophobe” and asks when we will take down Mt. Rushmore.

Welcome back, Claudia!

Exclusive: Last Year Ryan Seacrest’s Foundation Paid His Sister $250K and His Dad $96K to Give Away $90K in Cash Grants

Ryan Seacrest is busy getting press for wearing small shirts, breaking up with girlfriends, and having alleged mini strokes on “American Idol.”

But in real life, Seacrest–who’s made a fortune hosting “American Idol,” producing the Kardashians’ TV show, and running his radio empire– has a private tax free foundation. But the beneficiaries are his sister and father, not so much anyone else.

I’ve written about Seacrest’s foundation before because it’s just mind boggling how it keeps playing out. His sister, Meredith, runs the 501 c3 and his father does the legal work.

Every year, dad gets a $96,000 retainer. To do what exactly? Not much. The Ryan Seacrest Foundation is not big on giving money away to people who need it, just to family.

Sister Meredith in 2018 was paid a total of $250,000. She had a $242,000 salary, up from $225,000 the prior year. With benefits she gets the tw0-fifty.

The Foundation made 9 seven donations in the amount of $10,000 each in 2018. So that’s just $90,000.

They also donate electronic equipment to children’s hospitals, the same nine that got the cash grants. Each of those equipment donations is valued at $15,768.

In 2018, according to the Foundation’s Form 990, the total for money donated was down from the previous year by about $60,000. However, salaries were up by $80,000. Sister and dad’s salaries weren’t the only ones paid out. Total salaries were listed at $582,064. A little over $200,000 in salaries is unspecified.

The Ryan Seacrest Foundation claimed $3,855,990 in total assets for 2018. So most of the money is just sitting tax free, doing nothing but gaining interest.
