UPDATE: Kanye Meltdown at “Campaign Rally” to Get on South Carolina Ballot, Promote New Album Named for Mother

0

UPDATE 7:46pm SUNDAY
Kanye appeared in South Carolina at a “campaign rally” for his fake presidential campaign. He’s trying to get signatures to get on that state’s ballot, but really he’s just making a scene in advance of his “Donda” album.

The sad part is that he was at one point sobbing, carrying on that his father wanted to abort him when his mother mother was pregnant, “But she saved me.” His father is alive, his mother is not, and I’m sure he’s thrilled to hear all this aired to strangers.

He also claimed that “Harriet Tubman never actually freed the slaves, she just had them work for other white people,” and said his brain was too big for his head.

Most of the hour plus event was just an incoherent free form ramble, with onlookers trying to appease him saying “we love you.” No, they just enjoy the spectacle of a bi-polar man with lots of money and no one to say ‘no’ to him, raving like a lunatic. It’s embarrassing. And sad that his family can’t control this. I really wonder sometimes what Kim Kardashian’s endgame is.

EARLIER Kanye West is crazy like a fox.

He’s appearing at a “campaign event” this afternoon in South Carolina and wants to get on the ballot for the presidential election.

But he’s doing it because he’s dropping a new album called “Donda,” named for his mother, on July 24th.

He Tweeted and then deleted the tracklist of songs. He’s also Tweeted his drawings of the White House with the word “Vision.” But he’s a little near sighted as far as his political appeal, since he’s just a Trump supporter looking to cause trouble for the Democrats. It won’t work.

Will the album release be a success? Well, Kanye has turned to religious music over the last year. I’m sure his religious beliefs are deep. But by ditching his raps with large samples from other copyrighted works he’s saving a lot of money in licenses. Kanye’s previous albums were money losers because of all the people who had to be paid. He made a lot of obscure songwriters rich with sample licenses.

Will the album really drop on July 24th? Who knows? Kanye is famous for not keeping to release dates. If it’s not the 24th, he’ll wait til after Beyonce’s release on the 31st.

PS Kanye’s offering a new sneaker for $580 via Adidas. There must be a lot more disposable income out there than I realized. You can have 3 pairs of much better made New Balance 990s for that much money, with change for socks. (And yes, I totally boycott New Balance’s owner, but I wear the shoes.)

Here’s the tracklist for “Donda”:

Beyonce Drops Exciting Trailer for DisneyPlus Visual Album “Black is King” Featuring Lupita Nyong’o, Pharrell, Jay Z, More

0

Beyonce and Disney Plus have released the trailer for her “Black is King” visual album, coming July 31st. It is indeed very visually exciting, lensed by a group of directors including Emmanuel Adjei, Blitz Bazawule, Pierre Debusschere, Jenn Nkiru, Ibra Ake, Dikayl Rimmasch, Jake Nava and Kwasi Fordjour.

Seen in this clip briefly is Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o. But Pharrell, Jay Z, Naomi Campbell, and even Beyonce’s former Destiny’s Child mate Kelly Rowland are featured. (What? No Michelle Williams?)

Sony Music must be PISSED off about this situation, they’ve evidently been cut out of the whole thing after a 27 year relationship. Credits are still for Disney and Beyonce’s Parkwood Entertainment.

The visuals here are indeed exciting, presented like a kaleidoscope. Will there be a plot? Songs? We’ll have to wait and see. But it looks like a cool mid summer gift from Bey. She can always take lemons and make lemonade, we certainly know that.

John Lewis: Civil Rights Leader, Hero, Legend, Congressman Since 1987, Role Model Dies At Age 80

0

Congressman John Lewis, a legend in his own time, has died at age 80 from pancreatic cancer. A 17 term representative from Georgia, John Lewis was a beacon, a shining light in the civil rights movement. His loss is huge, particularly now.

The congressman announced in December 2019 that he had been diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

Martin Luther King III has written on Twitter: John Lewis was an American treasure. He gave a voice to the voiceless, and he reminded each of us that the most powerful nonviolent tool is the vote. Our hearts feel empty without our friend, but we find comfort knowing that he is free at last.”

“I have been in some kind of fight ― for freedom, equality, basic human rights ― for nearly my entire life,” Lewis said in a statement at the time. “I have never faced a fight quite like the one I have now.”

I was honored to meet and talk to John Lewis over the years thanks to our mutual friendship with Aretha Franklin. Just being in his presence was thrilling. Please, let’s read all the tributes to him, especially from Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.

Clinton: “Hillary and I were blessed by his friendship, support and wise counsel. We’ll miss him so much, but we’ll always be grateful that he lived to see a new generation of Americans take to the streets in search of his long sought “beloved community.”

Nancy Pelosi statement:

“Today, America mourns the loss of one of the greatest heroes of American history: Congressman John Lewis, the Conscience of the Congress.

“John Lewis was a titan of the civil rights movement whose goodness, faith and bravery transformed our nation – from the determination with which he met discrimination at lunch counters and on Freedom Rides, to the courage he showed as a young man facing down violence and death on Edmund Pettus Bridge, to the moral leadership he brought to the Congress for more than 30 years.”

Nick Cannon’s Syndicated Talk Show, Scheduled for this Fall, Delayed At Least by A Year Following Scandal

Nick Cannon’s syndicated talk show, set for this September, is off the docket.

Lions Gate and producer Debmar-Mercury have put it off for at least a year, if not forever, following Cannon’s firing by Viacom thanks to his anti-Semitism scandal.

“The ‘Nick Cannon’ talk show will not debut this year,” Lions Gate’s Debmar-Mercury, the show’s producer and distributor, said in a statement Friday. “After conversations with Nick, we do believe that his public comments don’t reflect his true feelings and his apology is heartfelt and sincere. We want to continue the healing process as he meets with leaders of the Jewish community and engages in a dialogue with our distribution partners to hear their views. We are standing by Nick in our hope that by fall 2021 he will be able to use his extraordinary talent and platform to entertain, enlighten and unite his audience on the ‘Nick Cannon’ talk show. Lionsgate and Debmar-Mercury condemn anti-Semitism, racism and hate speech. It runs counter to everything we stand for.”

I doubt we will ever see this show, despite it having been cleared in almost all of the country. This just gives the producers time to let the heat of the scandal wear off before they find a new host. Nick would have to do something he hasn’t done so far– go on a full scale apology tour that actually seems genuine– before it could work.

So this leaves just Fox, owned by Rupert Murdoch, that hasn’t pulled the plug on a Cannon project, “The Masked Singer.” They’re probably freaking out right now because if they do take Cannon off, the audience will revolt. But if they keep him on, the audience will be equally upset. And boy, can you imagine the jokes or even parodies of “The Masked Singer”? I’ll leave them to your imagination.

“30 Rock” Upfront Special, Blocked by 60% of NBC Affiliates, Scores Just 2.5 Mil Viewers

0

Liz Lemon didn’t make her name into lemonade last night.

NBC’s effort to do an upfront promo of new shows based around a “30 Rock” reunion fizzled terribly. Around 60% of NBC affiliates objected and didn’t show the episode. The result was a mere 2.5 million viewers.

A “Young Sheldon” rerun on CBS did around 4 million or more, easily trouncing it.

Who knows what induced Tina Fey and co to go along with this idea? It wasn’t a good one. Money? Aren’t they all rich rich rich at this point? Lorne Michaels? He can say no.

Anyway, it didn’t work out. It was the 8th highest rated show of the night.

Even worse it killed the already suffering “Superstore” and  “Brooklyn 99” which followed in reruns. They may have had their lowest ratings ever. “Brooklyn 99” didn’t even make 1 million viewers, coming in at 883,000.

Kristian Alfonso Says She Was Asked to Take Months off of “Days of our Lives” After 37 Years, So She’s Not Coming Back

“Days of our Lives” star Kristian Alfonso has given the reason she’s leaving the show after 37 years: disrespect.

Alfonso told Entertainment Tonight that when it came time to re-sign her contract, the show asked her to sit out for “four -t0-five months” until she could be launched in a new storyline.

“And at that moment I thought to myself, you know what, it’s time for a change, and it was the perfect moment to make that decision,” she told ET. “I was taken aback when he said that they wanted, he and [co-EP] Albert [Alarr] wanted to take me off camera for four to five months. It was not something that had ever been discussed but that’s what it was… I just thought, you know what, it’s time to really write a new chapter. I’ve had an incredible run there.”

Alfonso has announced her departure without filming a finale. She’s shot episodes through the fall. She has no idea how they will handle her exit.

“In the storyline, I still have scripts that were supposed to be shot,” she told ET. “Of course, everything is being probably rewritten because of COVID and guidelines that they have to adhere to. But that was not supposed to be the end.”

Maybe she and executive producer Ken Corday, the cheapest man in show biz, can work something out. Realistically, at one one point down the line her character would have to return because the actor who’s played her father for fifty years, Bill Hayes. is 95 years old.

But the reality is, she’s rich, she’s famous, popular, and done. She could work at Hallmark steadily. Any of the other three soaps will jump at the chance to stunt cast her. Fans of “The Young and the Restless” are already clogging social media with ideas.

Alfonso’s departure is not alone at Days. Executive producer Greg Meng was just forced out after 31 years. About a half dozen other actors have been let go, all long term and popular, too, because of Corday’s budget cuts. But she was the longest-tenured.

I have to laugh when I read about Corday’s budget cuts. He and the Bells, who created “Y&R” and “Bold and the Beautiful,” are very, very rich. The estate of William and Lee Bell just sold two properties in Los Angeles totaling over $50 million. No soap actor has ever lived so grandly.

Nick Cannon Stepping Away from Morning Radio Deejay Job, Tweets “Y’all can have this planet. I’m out!”

0

“Morning radio family. I have decided to take some time away from my radio show so I can commit myself to deeper, more thorough reflection and education.”

So wrote Nick Cannon yesterday, stepping away from the mic at Power 106 FM in Los Angeles. Will he return? I think so. But his situation now calls for a better strategy than he’s employing. He’s got a rabbi from the Simon Wiesenthal Center on his podcast, which is great, but he still has posts on his own Twitter feed from less than two days ago reflecting his former hostile feelings.

In the meantime, overnight Nick sounded like he was having a difficult time balancing his contrition with criticism from peers that he’d abandoned them. Abandoned them from what exactly? Anyway, he Tweeted: I hurt an entire community and it pained me to my core, I thought it couldn’t get any worse. Then I watched my own community turn on me and call me a sell-out for apologizing. Goodnight. Enjoy Earth…Y’all can have this planet. I’m out”

Well, he’s not “out.” He’s still here, he’s got three kids and he’s got to deal with this mess. If he’s smart he’ll take a season off from everything and regroup, return with some new insights. And if he’s serious about all this, he’ll get some decent advice, starting with the overall look of his podcast. He’s posted a photo from his studio on Instagram, talking to Rabbi Abraham Cooper with the triple power fist behind him while wearing a bright red costume. That’s a lot of contradicting messages, frankly.

Here’s the Kygo Remix of Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got to Do With It”– She Isn’t Coming out of Retirement, Everyone Relax

0

Here’s the Kygo remix of Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got to Do with it.” It was unnecessary, but we have nothing else to do. Is Tina coming out of retirement? No. When she appeared last November at the Broadway premiere of “Tina! The Musical,” she was sassy as usual but fragile. She didn’t even come to the premiere after party. We love her, we’re always happy to see and hear her, but Tina should enjoy her retirement. She worked hard and deserves it.

The video stars the great Laura Harrier and Charles Michael David. Sarah Bahbah wrote and directed it. The remix doesn’t do much to the original perfect record. This worked with Kygo and Whitney Houston last summer because it was an unreleased song, it was unexpected, we though there was no more in the Whitney archives. But this song is a massive hit for 35 years. No surprises. Tina’s people should find some unreleased material.

PS If Tina were up to it, she’d have been IN the video, even a cameo. She’s not. Which is fine. She’s given us EVERYTHING. She has nothing to prove.

Kate Winslet to Receive Toronto Film Festival’s TIFF Tribute Actor Award, Presumably via Zoom

0

The Toronto Film Festival is soldiering on despite the fact that no one is coming — we can’t go to Canada because the border is closed, plus no one wants to fly anywhere. It’s a very bad situation because we love TIFF and know they are suffering financially. The festival is looking for donation from film fans and movie studios.

Today TIFF announced that they’re giving their annual Tribute Actor Award to Kate Winslet. I guess this will be via Zoom. Kate is not flying in from the UK, obviously. And we’re not going up there. But we’ll watch it on Zoom. I’m sure the Oscar winning Ms. Winslet will send a pithy speech– I sure hope so, she’s one of the wittiest people I know. The first time we met, long ago, she told me to “Bugger off.” We’ve been friends ever since!

Officially:” The Awards mark an annual fundraiser to support TIFF’s year-round programming and the organization’s core mission to transform the way people see the world through film. The TIFF Tribute Awards honour the film industry’s outstanding contributors and their achievements, recognizing leading industry members, acting talent, directorial expertise, new talent, and a below-the-line artist and creator.”

If you love film, send this festival a token donation! We want them in good shape for next year.

UPDATED Murdoch’s Fox TV Makes It Clear: “Masked Singer” Ratings More Important than Nick Cannon’s Anti-Semitic Statements and Broadcasts

UPDATED AND CORRECTED Rupert Murdoch’s Fox TV — not Disney, as I inaccurately wrote earlier– it  letting Nick Cannon remain as host of “The Masked Singer” despite his anti-Semitic statements and pro-Louis Farrakhan Nation of Islam videos on YouTube. The name Disney has suddenly disappeared.

Yes. Fox TV– which was not part of the Disney deal–  is more interested in keeping “The Masked Singer” with its format and cast for big ratings and not rocking the boat. So what if Cannon said white people are savages and agreed that Black Hebrews are the real Jews? What’s more important? That? Or someone dressed in a parrot suit belting a crap song?

“Nick has sincerely apologized, and quickly taken steps to educate himself and make amends,” Fox said in a statement Wednesday.

“On that basis and given a belief that this moment calls for dialogue, we will move forward with Nick and help him advance this important conversation, broadly.”

Perfectly reasonable.

Cannon was fired by Viacom from VH-1, MTV, and Nickelodeon. He didn’t apologize to them. Instead, demanded the rights back to his “Wild n Out” show, and apology from Shari Redstone.

Of course, Nick can always get work at Sean Puffy Combs Revolt TV online. Combs offered him a job on Twitter yesterday because he’s in sympathy with Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam. For some reason, no one in the record industry is getting that message. But last week, Revolt TV was the only medium that would carry Farrakhan’s hate speech on July 4th.

What everyone is also not understanding is that it wasn’t one video on Cannon’s YouTube channel that was in question. There were several. They were all pro-Farrakhan, one of the most anti-Semitic, white-hating hate mongers in the world– maybe the leading one. In a time when we are trying to heal racial divides, Farrakhan should be everyone’s enemy.

Still to be determined is whether Cannon will host a daily talk show beginning September 21st for LionsGate in syndication, mostly on Fox stations. I can’t imagine guests signing up for that show, or the producers of it wanting to be involved. But we’ll see. Money talks in Hollywood.
