Professional Criminal Producer Garth Drabinsky Returning to Broadway After Prison Stint with “Paradise Square” Musical

0

Scott Rudin is gone but guess who’s back? Actual professional criminal GArth Drabinsky.

The Canadian theater producer whose company was called Livent is planning his own revival with “Paradise Square,” a new musical coming to Broadway in February 2022.

Drabinsky is now free to travel back and forth between the US and Canada. But that wasn’t always the case. He served time in Canada for fraud and forgery. The complaints against him in the US were dismissed after 10 years because he’d fulfilled his time in Canada.

So who wouldn’t want Garth Drabinsky back in New York and on Broadway? He can regale us all with tales of his five years in prison. I’d certainly invest with him, wouldn’t you? In November 1998, Livent sought bankruptcy protection in the US and Canada, claiming a debt of $334 million, and securities regulators in both Canada and the US began investigating Livent’s books.

What happened next was a massive legal proceeding you can read all about on Wikipedia. After prison, in 2017, the Ontario Securities Commission permanently banned Drabinsky from becoming a director or officer of any public company in Ontario. The OSC also prohibited him from acting as an investment promoter, and banned him from trading securities (other than as a retail investor, for trades within his RRSP or through a registered dealer for accounts in his name only).

So really, everything should be fine here.

The new musical’s creative team includes director Moisés Kaufman and choreographer Bill T. Jones, with a book by Christina Anderson, Marcus Gardley, Craig Lucas and Larry Kirwan. Graciela Daniele will provide musical staging, in collaboration with Kaufman and Jones.

Just remember: when this goes sideways, you heard it here first. Remember, Bialystock and Bloom’s follow up hit to “Springtime for Hitler” was set in prison.

Pop Charts: Bo Burnham Sacks “In the Heights,” Olivia Rodrigo With Release of Netflix Special Album

For a hot minute yesterday, the soundtrack to “In the Heights” was number 1 a day ahead of its release.

Not anymore.

Bo Burnham, humorist, writer, director, actor has dropped the soundtrack to his popular Netflix special. “Inside Bo Burnham” has sacked “In the Heights” and Olivia Rodrigo’s “Sour” and gone straight to number 1 on iTunes.

And that’s entertainment.

This thing is hot. Hotter than “In the Heights,” which is not selling that well and not picking up big views on YouTube so far.

“Inside” has also gone to Spotify an album. Stay tuned.

Robert Duvall, 90, Has “Apocalypse Now” Reunion with Martin Sheen in “12 Mighty Orphans,” Will Appear in Christian Bale Film

0

EXCLUSIVE

Robert Duvall is 90 and not stopping any time soon. Tomorrow he opens in “12 Mighty Orphans,” which stars Luke Wilson and Martin Sheen in a really great true story throwback film. I hesitate to say “family film,” but you could actually take your pre-teens and teens to see it and enjoy it, and not be embarrassed. It’s also a film for us “adults” with tremendous performances and filmmaking.

Duvall, who I interviewed last week, gets to have a reunion with his Apocalypse Now co-star Martin Sheen. They didn’t ad-lib their scene, but they were given general direction and put it together. Duvall tells me he and Sheen “hugged and hugged” when they met on set. Don’t forget, Sheen had a heart attack while making the Frances Ford Coppola classic back in 1978. They went through a lot together!

Duvall told me exclusively that his next project would be an appearance in Scott Cooper’s Edgar Allen Poe movie “The Pale Blue Eye” starring Christian Bale. Cooper directed him memorably in the great 2009 film, “Crazy Heart.” He’s also set to be in the next Adam Sandler Netflix film. And that’s not all. More coming this weekend from Duvall right here. PS He won his Oscar for Best Actor in Bruce Beresford’s stunning “Tender Mercies.” If you don’t know it, rent it.

Meantime, do see “12 Mighty Orphans.” Lovely, lovely film. And a big deal for Luke Wilson, who carries it mightily!

All Things Must Pass, but Not George Harrison’s Classic Album: Super 50th Anniversary Edition Coming

0

We are in the middle of a heavy 50th anniversary year for all the great music of 1971. And for the Beatles, this is most significant.

On August 6th  we’ll get a 50th anniversary edition of George Harrison’s amazing and lasting “All Things Must Pass” triple album. The new version will come with 5CDs and 8 LPs. If you get the complete set, they say it comes in a crate! No kidding!

When “All Things Must Pass” was first issued in 1971 it came in what was then a rare box set with 3 LPs. The only other pop album like that was “Jesus Christ Superstar.” We stared at like it was the slab from “2001 A Space Odyssey.” Now it’s coming in a crate!

But dig this. We just had the 50th birthday of Paul McCartney’s “Ram.” Prior to that, Sean Lennon remixed all of his dad’s solo hits in a box set. In July we’re also getting a McCartney doc from Hulu. In August comes the Peter Jackson remix doc of “Let it Be” as a new film called “Get Back.” In October, McCartney releases his $100 memoir in two volumes.

With “All Things Must Pass,” we go back to that Super Deluxe Edition, we get a very carefully curated project from George’s son Dhani Harrison and wife Olivia Harrison (Dhani’s mom), who so far have done an incredible job preserving George’s legacy.

The full crate (which an be purchased in other configs) includes 8LPs (180g) and 5CDs plus 1 Blu-ray audio disc There are 47 (42 previously unreleased) demos and outtakes.
“The Blu-ray allows fans to experience the main album in a high-res stereo, enveloping 5.1 surround sound and Dolby Atmos mixes. The collection contains a beautiful 60-page scrapbook curated by Olivia Harrison, with unseen imagery and memorabilia from the era, handwritten lyrics, diary entries, studio notes, tape box images, a comprehensive track-by-track, and more. It also includes a replica of the original album poster.
All Things Must Pass will be released in multiple physical and digital configurations, including as a 5LP or 3CD Deluxe Edition that pairs the main album with the session’s outtakes and jams. The main album will be available on its own as 2CD, 3LP, or limited edition 3LP color vinyl. All versions are available for pre-order now.
“Since the 50th-anniversary stereo mix release of the title track to my father’s legendary All Things Must Pass album in 2020, my dear pal Paul Hicks and I have continued to dig through mountains of tapes to restore and present the rest of this newly remixed and expanded edition of the album you now see and hear before you,” says Dhani Harrison. “Bringing greater sonic clarity to this record was always one of my father’s wishes and it was something we were working on together right up until he passed in 2001. Now, 20 years later, with the help of new technology and the extensive work of Paul Hicks we have realized this wish and present to you this very special 50th Anniversary release of perhaps his greatest work of art. Every wish will be fulfilled.”

Broadway: To Save a “Mockingbird,” Media Mogul Barry Diller Brings Back Jeff Daniels As Star and Without Producer Scott Rudin

0

The first of Scott Rudin’s Broadway shows is coming back without him as producer.

Media mogul Barry Diller, who financed the original production with David Geffen, is bringing back Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird,” adapted by Aaron Sorkin, to Broadway in October.

Diller returns with the original stars, Jeff Daniels and Celia Keenan-Bolger, and without Rudin, who was expelled from the theater community for severely awful behavior. Orin Wolf, who has a string of productions under his belt, is going to run the show.

Producers say “Mockingbird” has made $125 million since it began in November 2018, but that’s because tickets during Daniels’ run skyrocketed up to huge prices. When Daniels left and beloved actor Ed Harris came in, the numbers went down.

Diller had to bring back Daniels to save the show. In November 2019 I reported that “Mockingbird” had fallen considerably at the box office. By the beginning of March 2020, before the pandemic closure, “Mockingbird” had lots of empty seats.  The return of the play, which Sorkin adapted from Harper Lee’s famous novel, is officially open ended, but my guess is when Daniels gets a movie or TV series, they’ll wrap it for good this time rather than bring in a replacement.

As for Rudin, no one says what’s happened to his staff including producer Eli Bush, who was in lock step with Rudin for years.

“Cruella” the Movie Isn’t a Blockbuster But Its Soundtrack is Selling Like Crazy Stuffed with Oldies

The movie “Cruella” may not be the blockbuster Disney hoped for, but the soundtrack is selling like crazy.

“Cruella” is stuffed with oldies from the Bee Gees, Supertramp, Ike and Tina Turner, The Doors, Nina Simone, ELO, Queen, Blondie, The Clash, and the Ohio Players. The music is used to great effect during the film although a score of songs didn’t make the soundtrack even though they’re in the movie. (See below, thanks to a sharp eyed fan.)

Interestingly, the soundtrack is only available for download on iTunes or streaming on amazon. There is no CD. Disney simply skimped out on licensing, obviously. But fans are downloading the iTunes version in droves. The iTunes only album is hanging in there at number 5 after release on May 21st.

You can only imagine if there had been a full album with the songs below, and CDs. “Guardians of the Galaxy” milked the oldies market for a couple of hit albums still on the charts today.

LIST OF SONGS IN CRUELLA THAT DIDN’T MAKE THE SOUNDTRACK CD
Boys Keep Swinging – David Bowie
Car Wash – Rose Royce
Eternelle – Brigitte Fontaine
Hush – Deep Purple
I Am Woman – Helen Reddy classic
I Get Ideas (When We Are Dancing) – Tony Martin
I Gotcha – Joe Tex American singer
Inside – Looking Out – The Animals
Nightmares – The J. Geils Band
Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps – Doris Day
She’s A Rainbow – The Rolling Stones
Smile – Judy Garland
Sympathy for the Devil – The Rolling Stones
The Wild One – Suzi Quatro
The Wizard – Black Sabbath
Theme from a Summer Place – Norrie Paramour and His Orchestra
These Boots are Made for Walking – Nancy Sinatra
Time of the Season – The Zombies
Watch the Dog that Brings the Bone – Sandy Gaye soul-funk
You’re Such A Good Looking Woman – Joe Dolan

No Sign of New Owner James Murdoch at Opening of Tribeca (Formerly Film) Festival) with De Niro, Cuomo

If James Murdoch was at the press conference to launch the new Tribeca (formerly Film) Festival, he didn’t come on stage, that’s for sure.

He wasn’t there.

Robert De Niro was, and so was Governor Andrew Cuomo. I can’t imagine they spend a lot of time chatting with Rupert Murdoch’s son, who now owns the Festival thanks to his majority investment last year.

Cuomo gave heavy glass awards to De Niro, limping after he hurt his leg last month on set, and co-founder Jane Rosenthal.

The latter spoke at length about the early days of the Tribeca Film Festival, when it still took place in Tribeca and promoted downtown New York. Tonight’s premiere is in Washington Heights, one hundred and eighty blocks north. The other big festival screening is at Radio City Music Hall, in mid town.

Neither Rosenthal or Cuomo mentioned Murdoch, even though he’s their owner now. But Murdoch is scheduled to be part of the Tribeca X Talks next Friday, June 18th. He’ll have a chat with Wal Mart chief Doug McMillon “about lessons learned from the global pandemic, movement for racial justice and natural disasters as well as opportunities for recovery.”

Tickets are not available to the public, and I don’t know where they’re doing it. Neither Murdoch nor Wal Mart has anything to do with New York, or Tribeca. But it’s a corporate money thing at the very 1% level. God bless.

On the Tribeca X website, by the way, all the speakers have bios except Murdoch. His says “Coming Soon.” Murdoch was the architect of News Corp’s phone hacking scandal in Britain a few years ago. Now he gives money to good causes and to the Democrats to try and distance himself from his father and the company that gave him the billions to invest in Tribeca. He is Michael Corleone in The Godfather Part 2.

Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham Releases New Single, Announces Album & Tour, Divorces Wife of 21 Years

0

Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham is keeping busy.

He’s releasing a new single, has announced an album and a tour, and is divorcing his wife of 20 years, the mother of his three children.

The single is called “I Don’t Mind,” and it sounds like a rejected Fleetwood Mac track from the 80s. The album is named as they say eponymously, for himself. It hits September 17th.

The wife was named Kristen Messner. They have three kids, and were married 21 years ago. TMZ reports Messner filed for divorce this week.

The tour runs in September and then again in December.

Buckingham was fired by Fleetwood Mac a couple of years ago in a dispute over touring. He and Stevie Nicks joined Mick Fleetwood, Christine and John McVie back in 1974. Fleetwood Mac had already been a group for many years, but this turned them into superstars. Annoying ones, who slept with each other, sang about it, fought about it, and squabbled in public.

More recently Lindsey, 71, has had some health problems and required open heart surgery. Then he sold the rights to his songs for a lump sum during the pandemic. And now he’s got a song that sounds as out of date as if your grandfather insisted on bringing back Snooky Lanson (look him up). The album is his first in 10 years as a solo act.

Buyer Beware: Unscrupulous Brokers Are Selling Springsteen on Broadway Tickets for Thousands of Dollars

Tickets to Springsteen on Broadway don’t go on sale until tomorrow, Thursday June 10th. And you can only get them on SeatGeek.com

Nevertheless, unscrupulous ticket brokers are already online scalping seats for between $2,906 and $7,406 — that’s four thousand and seven thousand dollars.

I took this picture at left from Event Tickets Center. They’re already doing business accepting charges at these outrageous prices even though they have no power do so.

It’s the same every day not just Tuesday June 29th.

Another group is called TicketNetwork.com. Their prices are below. It’s all between $2,500 and almost $5,000.

Don’t fall for it!

But where is the FTC or the NY State Attorney General or someone to stop this skullduggery. And can you imagine actually paying these prices to an online broker? Insane. But there’s a sucker born every minute!

There are others, as well. Remember, fans of the Boss: Bruce doesn’t get that money. You’re paying that to thieves. The top price on SeatGeek will be $800, that’s high enough. You’re being mugged if you pay more!

(Watch Video) CBS Should Let, Nay, Insist, Jimmy Fallon and Lin Manuel Miranda Host the Tony Awards

After watching this video, CBS should demand that Jimmy Fallon and Lin Manuel Miranda host the Tony Awards in September and forever.

The video aired on The Tonight Show tonight. It features Jimmy Smits, Olga Merediz, Phylicia Rashad, Kristin Chenoweth, Christopher Jackson and Laura Benanti.

Sit back and enjoy!!
