MGM, Buoyed By Sale to Amazon, Will Release 2 Major Films on Same Day: Aretha Biopic and New Sean Penn “Flag Day”

0

The Amazon is flowing, or rather the money, it would seem.

MGM, long suffering from a lack of cash, seems suddenly flush and giddy. They just announced that they bought Sean Penn’s film “Flag Day” and will release it on August 13th.

That’s the same day they have scheduled for Jennifer Hudson playing Aretha Franklin in the biopic, “Respect.”

That’s two big releases on the same day after a long time of nothing– and also waiting to release the James Bond movie “No Time to Die” until November after a year or more of postponements. That’s very courageous!

“Flag Day” will first premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in early July. As Amazon now owns MGM, that’s the second Cannes film for the new company, and the second one with a quick opening in the US. Amazon has set August 6th for a screening of Leos Carax’s “Annette” at Lincoln Center’s Film Society. I like this! No waiting!

“Flag Day” stars Penn with his daughter, Dylan Penn, and even has a role for her brother, Hopper Penn. It’s a family affair. Josh Brolin is also featured.

Superstar screenwriters Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth have adapted the film from Jennifer Vogel’s memoir, “Flim-Flam Man: The True Story of My Father’s Counterfeit Life.”  Dylan Penn plays Vogel across two decades as she comes of age while navigating a fraught relationship with her beloved, career criminal father John Vogel, played by Sean Penn.

Broadway: “The Book of Mormon,” with Sinking Ticket Sales Pre-Pandemic, Returns without Producer Scott Rudin

0

Before the pandemic I was chronicling the sinking ticket sales of “The Book of Mormon” on Broadway.

After 11 years, the irreverent musical from the creators of “South Park” was in danger of closing. Sales were way off, there were plenty of empty seats, and the average high ticket price had dropped from around $800 to $168.

Then came the pandemic, and the more recent ouster of producer Scott Rudin over his toxic and violent behavior to employees. He’s also just not a nice guy in the most profound ways.

Rudin said he would “step back” from his productions, but basically he’s got a lot of stalking horses doing his bidding while he uses a remote control.

Now “Mormon” is returning to performances on November 5th. In a statement, authors Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Robert Lopez said, “When Broadway shut down, so many amazing and talented people were put out of work, many of whom had become family to us. As writers and as fans we are so ready for the “Great Broadway Comeback” and are so glad that our show can be a part of it. Can’t wait to be back with the entire team and our wonderful cast, crew, and orchestra.”

Since “Mormon” went on hiatus a lot of things have changed besides health regulations. Black Lives Matter rose in prominence, the cancel culture took hold, political correctness became paramount. “The Book of Mormon” might have trouble re-opening in that atmosphere. The show is very offensive in the best ways possible. Every laugh, even about “raping babies,” is such a shock that it’s a relief. I have a feeling “Mormon” may be more popular now that the audience is so exhausted by righteousness.

We’ll see what the response is when ticket sales resume on June 28th.

Bruce Springsteen Teams Up with The Killers for New “Dustland” Single Before Broadway Show Returns

0

Bruce Springsteen, as he promised last week, has teamed up with The Killers for a new single.

“Dustland” may be the first of many different singles that Bruce is featured on this year including some tracks with John Mellencamp.

Bruce will commence his “Springsteen on Broadway” beginning June 26th, with scalpers having a field day, selling tickets for $3,000 or more and ripping off fans left and right. Fun!

So what do you get when Bruce is matched with Brandon Flowers? Um, sounds a little like Meatloaf to me. Maybe it’s a tribute to Jim Steinman.

LYRICS:

Dustland fairytale beginning
Just another white trash
County kiss
In Sixty one
Long brown hair and foolish eyes
He looks just like you want him to
Some kind of slick chrome American prince
A blue jean serenade
Moon River what’d you do to me
But I don’t believe you
Saw Cinderella in a party dress but
She was looking for a night gown
I saw the devil wrapping up his hands
He’s getting ready for the show down
I saw the minute that I turned away
I got my money on a pawn tonight
A change came in disguise of revelation
Set his soul on fire
She said she’d always knew he’d come around
And the decades disappear like sinking
Ships, but we persevere God gives us hope
But we still fear
What we don’t know
The mind is poison

Castle in the sky
Sit stranded vandalized
The drawbridge is closing
Saw Cinderella in a party dress but
She was looking for a night gown
I saw the devil wrapping up his hands
He’s getting ready for the show down
I saw the ending when they turned the page
I threw my money and I ran away
Straight to the Valley of the Great Divide
Out where the dreams all hide
And where the wind don’t blow
Out here the good girls die
And the sky don’t snow
Out here the bird don’t sing
Out here the field don’t grow
Out here the bell don’t ring
Out here the bell don’t ring
Out here the good girls die

Now Cinderella don’t you go to sleep
It’s such a bitter form of refuge
Ah don’t you know the kingdom’s under siege
And everybody needs you
Is there still magic in the midnight sun
Or did you leave it back in sixty-one
In the cadence of a young man’s eyes
Out where the dreams all hide

“Big Bang Theory” Actress Mayim Bialik Scores 2nd Lowest Rating So Far as “Jeopardy!” Guest Host

0

The “Jeopardy!” story just get worse and worse.

Numbers for Mayim Bialik’s first week of guest hosting are in, and they are bad. The “Big Bang Theory” star pulled in just 4.9 million viewers, the lowest ratings so far among the guest hosts.

Bialik tied Dr. Oz for second lowest rating, and just narrowly beat Anderson Cooper’s 4.8 million.

So far, the guest hosts have been a ratings disaster, all of them except for Ken Jennings.

Savannah Guthrie starts tonight. We still have George Stephanopolous, Robin Roberts, and LeVar Burton to look forward to.

Then presumably Jennings will get the job beginning in September.

I like Mayim Bialik in principle but what were they thinking?

Diana Ross, The One and Only, Dropping a New Single Called “Thank You” on Thursday

0

Miss Diana Ross is dropping a new single on Thursday. It’s called “Thank You.” Once a part of the Supremes with the late great Mary Wilson, Cindy Birdsong, and Florence Ballard, Diana remains a superstar. She’s put a snippet on Twitter to whet our appetites. Will an album follow? It will just be grand to hear that voice. PS I have no idea what label she’s on. RCA? Motown? BMG? Someone will tell us what’s going on, I’m sure.

(PSS I wonder if Diana remembers we were all in a tent on super agent Ed Limato’s lawn, she was dancing with her kids, and Senator John Kerry told us he was running for president. It was a scoop. Anyway we know how that turned out.)

“The Bachelorette” Without Chris Harrison, Week 2, Drops Another 11%, 18% in Key Age Group

0

“The Bachelorette” is not having a great summer.

ABC’s latest chapter of the idiotic dating show dropped 11% last night from last week in overall viewers, 18.37% in the key age demo.

The show is down to about 3.3 million fans who care what happens to these insipid people.

The participants are no different than in the past, but host Chris Harrison has been replaced by two bland women who were once in the competition.

Last night, Katie, the current Bachelorette, sent home one guy, then freaked out when another guy said the others were there “for the wrong reason.” Meaning, they were there for fame. Well, d’uh! Isn’t that why everyone is there?

It’s time to shut this whole operation down. Maybe the continuous drop in ratings will just make it happen naturally.

Chris Harrison? Playing golf, I would guess, with his multi million dollar settlement.

Report: Zoe Kravitz Will Direct Channing Tatum in “Pussy Island,” Selling Rights at Cannes Market

0

This is not an announcement from Troma Films.

Zoe Kravitz, actress and daughter of Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet, is going to direct her first feature. She wrote it, too.

The movie is called “Pussy Island,” and with that title we are set up for a lot of fun in the future. And no, this isn’t “MILF Island’ from “3o Rock.”

Kravitz says that the script is about a clever waitress who sets her sights on a tech billionaire who runs Pussy Island. Channing Tatum will play the billionaire. I am not making this up.

Will “Pussy Island” turn out to be a horror film, a social satire like “Get Out” with elements of Jeffrey Epstein? Will the title remain despite Google coming to censor it any minute now?

Deadline.com says they’re selling the rights at the Cannes Market. A female lead has yet to be cast, although shouldn’t Megan Fox get this role? I vote for her.

For some reason, all weekend I was humming Elvis Costello’s song “B Movie.” Now I know why!

Theater: John Logan Will Try a Different Take on “The Last Ship” at Berkeley Rep with “Swept Away,” Music by the Avett Brothers

0

Hmmmm…

Just a few short years ago, John Logan wrote the revised script for Sting’s musical, “The Last Ship,” which sailed on Broadway then went out for refitting in other versions in the UK, Los Angeles, and Toronto.

Now Logan has written another seafaring musical called “Swept Away,” not be confused with Lina Wertmuller’s famed movie from the 1970s. This “Swept Away” will open January 9th at Berkeley Rep, starring John Gallagher Jr. and Stark Sands. Michael Mayer is directing.

Here’s the description:

“Swept Away” is set in 1888, off the coast of New Bedford, MA. When a violent storm sinks their whaling ship, the four surviving souls — a young man in search of adventure, his older brother who has sworn to protect him, a captain at the end of a long career at sea, and a worldly first mate who has fallen from grace — each face a reckoning: How far will I go to stay alive? And can I live with the consequences?

Doesn’t this sound like “The Last Ship” moved from Newcastle, England to the Massachusetts coast?

Here’s the song “Swept Away,” from 2007.

Stephen Colbert’s Return to Full Audience: So-So Ratings and a Peculiar Appearance by Jon Stewart

0

Does Jon Stewart really think the coronavirus was hatched in the Wuhan Lab? You might think so after watching his rant on Stephen Colbert last night. At the 4 minute mark, Stewart launches into a tirade that seems pretty convincing. Colbert isn’t sure if it’s tongue in cheek and looks a little surprised at Stewart’s take that bats are everywhere and don’t cause COVID. Stewart didn’t seem facetious, but who knows with these guys?

The ratings for Colbert’s return to a full audience at the Ed Sullivan Theater were so so, just 2.3 million people in the overnight ratings. Jon Batiste performed his new song, “Freedom.” I really like Jon Batiste, but this whole thing is very much like Pharrell Williams’s great song, “Freedom.” Too much freedom can be a bad thing, maybe.

Monster Wait: “Godzilla v Kong” Teeters On $100 Mil Domestic Box Office for 3 Weeks, May Happen Today

0

Oh, and they are thisclose.

Warner Bros. “Godzilla v. Kong” didn’t cross the $100 million line in the US on Sunday. The monster movie has waited three weeks in a row to finally send off fireworks and congrats to all involved.

What a wait it’s been! As of Sunday night the first movie to make money in the pandemic closed out its total at $99,704,232. Ouch! And that’s been going on for three weeks in a row, when the theater count started dropping.

The current theater count is down to 987.

It’s like “Godzilla v Kong” finally crossed the $100 million last night. If not, it will be tonight. Not to worry: the worldwide total including the US is around $435 million. It was a big hit. Those big boys will be back in some form!
