Diana Ross Suddenly Discovers Talent for Songwriting at Age 75, Or, Er, Publishing Royalties

0

Here’s the weird story of the day.

Diana Ross’s biggest hits with the Supremes were written by Brian & Eddie Holland, and Lamont Dozier.

And then Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson.

And her solo hits came from Lionel Richie, Marvin Gaye, and Nile Rodgers.

Now, at the age of 75, Diana has discovered she’s a songwriter. Or rather, if you stick your name on a bunch of songs you’ll get publishing royalties.

Celine Dion’s late husband, Rene Angelil, understood this concept 30 years ago or more. He made every songwriter who landed a number on Celine’s album give up a portion of the royalties and credit. That’s how Celine got rich.

Only songwriters get paid royalties when a song when is played on the radio. Performers get zilch. There are a few singers who are smart enough to embrace this extortion but of course they’re protecting themselves. Legislation is introduced every couple of years for a performer’s royalty on radio, but then radio squashes it like a bug through lobbying.

So Diana has a new album coming November 5th full of generic songs written by teams of people with her name at the head of the list. Today she dropped one, it’s ghastly, called “If the World Just Danced.” Here’s the group of people credited with this atrocity: Aliandro Prawl, Andre Pinckney, Scott M. Carter, Amy Wadge, Vanessa Wood & Jaquetta Singleton. And Diana.

Stop me if you’ve heard enough.

Please, Ms. Ross, Do you know where you’re going to? Do what you do best: SING with that beautiful voice, great songs, not this.

Drake Drops New Album, Samples Sample of The Beatles’ 1965 Hit “Michelle” for Kick Off Track

0

Drake is back.

The Canadian hip hop star released his first new album since 2018 last night. He was actually a couple of hours late sending “Certified Lover Boy” to streaming services. Wise people on the East Coast went to sleep. But a few on the West Coast and other places kept vigil.

What they got was a long, kind of turgid throwback album with lots of samples and guest stars and not a lot of new ideas. None of that matters, does it? You must recall that Drake’s biggest hit of all was “Hotline Bling,” which relied totally on a sample of Mel & Tim’s R&B hit, “Why Can’t We Live Together.” And so, the kick off track here is taken from the Beatles’ “Michelle.”

What makes Drake’s “Champagne Poetry” a sampling notable is that it’s a double sample. “Michelle” was already sampled by someone named Masego on his own track called “Navajo.” So Drake lifted that sample for himself. It’s a sample sale! What makes any of this original is…nothing!

Nevertheless, “Certified Lover Boy” shot straight to number 1 on iTunes over night, displacing Kanye West’s “Donda,” and taking over the streaming charts.

I didn’t realize this but the Beatles have found themselves in over 1,000 sampling situations over the years. “Michelle” was sampled in 1985 by Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick for “The Show.” So this is not a new idea. But I’ll bet it’s an expensive one. To get “Michelle” now, I doubt Paul McCartney let it go for anything less than a goodly sum. So “Certified Lover Boy” starts with that amount on its Profit and Loss statement.

Who gets the Grammy when Drake is nominated? Paul McCartney. He wrote the song. In 1965.

Here”s the recipe. You take the Beatles:

add Masego

and you get Champagne Poetry

Kate Walsh Returns to “Grey’s Anatomy” After Many Seasons Because Most Older Characters Are Dead

0

Kate Walsh is one of the few “Grey’s Anatomy” alum who made it out alive. They couldn’t kill her character, Dr. Addison Montgomery, because she left the series for the spin off, “Private Practice.”

Well, now, Walsh is returning to “Grey’s” after many seasons away largely because her character is among the few from the show’s beginning who is still alive. Walsh posted a notice to Instagram and I must say she looks younger now than she did then. What does Derek Shepherd’s first wife want? Why is she returning to Seattle? I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

“Grey’s” is also bringing back Meredith’s dead mother in the person of Kate Burton, and adding Peter Gallagher maybe as Meredith’s real father. It’s season 18, they’ve gotten rid of so many people, and they’re clearly running out of stories. Plus, “Grey’s” goes up against the cult favorite “Law & Order SVU” and “Organized Crime,” so they need some gimmicks to keep fans tuned in.

Addison will return to “Grey’s” to find both McDreamy and McSteamy dead, a statistical improbability for young men in good health unless their contracts were cancelled. I’m sure someone will explain it all to her. .

Billy Preston, the “5th Beatle,” Would Have Turned 75 Today, Featured in Upcoming Doc and Box Set

0

The great Billy Preston would been 75 years old today. The true “Fifth Beatle” (or sixth after George Martin), Billy was the only artist whose name was featured on a label with the group. “Get Back” is by The Beatles with Billy Preston.

Yet Billy can be heard all over late Beatles recordings. He will also be seen and heard in the upcoming Peter Jackson documentary, “Get Back,” about the making of “Let it Be,” and on the “Let it Be” expanded 50th anniversary album. He’s all over both of them. You can see and hear Billy on the rooftop concert as well.

Billy died June 6, 2006 after six months in a coma because of alleged medical malpractice. Fifteen years later his estate has still not been completed legally. Greedy relatives, and some of who claim to be related, have careened through various courts and judges trying to get their hands on money he did not want them to have.

Some of those relatives were so eager for Billy to die that three days before his death they took out a probate action as if he were already dead. That’s a first. They told a judge recently, they figured he was going to die anyway. What???

Billy grew up playing with Little Richard and Ray Charles, was bffs with Aretha, was recorded by George Harrison, and went on to have major hits with “Will it Go Round in Circles” and “Nothing from Nothing.” He co-wrote the famous Joe Cocker hit, “You Are So Beautiful.”

I was lucky enough to know Billy. He was a sweet soul. One day his whole story will be told. Until then, I wish him a happy birth day in heaven where he is no doubt leading a wild jam with Aretha, Richard, Ray, George Harrison and so many others.

And he knows he will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next month in Cleveland, where I hope there will be an appropriate celebration.

As the World Turns: CBS Chooses Second NFL Player for a News Show, Network of Cronkite, Murrow Eschews Actual Journalists

0

Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite just poured some drinks and rolled over in their graves. Ed Bradley is throwing up.

CBS News has announced they’ve chosen yet another former NFL player t ohost one of their shows. Akbar Oluwakemi-Idowu Gbajabiamila is going to co-host the low rated talk show called “The Talk.” He is also a commentator on the very serious news show, “American Ninja Warrior.”

This seems like a plot from “Murphy Brown,” a satire about TV journalism.

“The Talk.” an abysmal program, replaced “As the World Turns” a decade ago. Les Moonves created the show as vehicle for his wife, Julie Chen, to compete with ABC’s “The View.”

Akbar joins a motley crew including Sheryl Underwood, Amanda Kloots, and Jerry O’Connell. This is a meeting of no minds, although O’Connell is funny. Kloots has managed to turn the death of her husband, Broadway star Nick Cordero, into an Eve Harrington moment par excellence. Underwood’s charms are a mystery. But there they are.

Akbar follows Nate Burleson, another ex NFL-er, who replaced serious journalist Anthony Mason on “CBS This Morning,” now retitled “CBS Mornings.” While it’s great to see African American men join CBS News, maybe they should be professional journalists. There are plenty of Black correspondents who are probably really pissed at these announcements.

And what’s next for CBS News? Profiles of Kim Kardashian on “60 Minutes”? The whole thing is preposterous and sad.

But hey, congrats to Akbar and to Nate. I think they’re being used. But hopefully this will be good for their careers. They should get in touch with Sally Quinn to ask how CBS did with her years ago.

ABBA Drops 2 Songs, Announces New Album, Avatar Tour, Now Look Like Steely Dan’s Becker and Fagen

0

Benny and Bjorn from ABBA now look like Donald Fagen and Walter Becker from Steely Dan.

Forty years later, they’re releasing a new album on November 5th called “Voyage.” Two of the singles are out today.

It’s cash in to go with their new tour, represented by avatars made by Industrial Light and Magic, a hologram-esque experience.

The album will include a Christmas song, as well. So the cash in is well planned. Good for them.

Their fans have Stockholm Syndrome!

Here are Steely Dan’s Becker and Fagen long ago. And the picture to the side is what they’ve become. ABBA is Reeling in the Years.

Watch Video: ABBA Debuts Two New Songs After 40 Years, “I Still Have Faith in You,” “Don’t Shut Me Down”

Live from Stockholm, ABBA put on a worldwide event for their superfans. They are a rare breed, certainly.

Two new songs, videos– “Don’t Shut Me Down” and “I Still Have Faith in You.”

The group debuted their first new song since 1982, “I Still Have Faith In You,” a ballad mostly sung by the women.

There’s a video made from animated avatars of themselves from years ago. A little creepy.

Sopranos Prequel “Many Saints of Newark” to Get Worldwide Premiere at NY’s Beacon Theater for Tribeca Film Festival

0

“The Many Saints of Newark” are coming to the Upper West Side.

David Chase’s prequel to “The Sopranos” will get a worldwide premiere at New York’s Beacon Theater on September 22nd. The Tribeca (formerly Film) Festival is hosting it.

(Tickets are on sale at ticketmaster.com, although every time I tried to log in via Firefox the site would not sell me tickets. Try using Explorer or Chrome. It seems a little fishy. The initial pricing was $106 for orchestra, then it jumped to $166. Wait see what happens next.)

Alessandro Nivola stars as Dickie Moltisanti (in Italian: Many Saints) father of Christopher (in English: christuphuh). As a young man Tony Soprano was raised by Dickie, then Tony returned the favor after Dickie was killed and acted a father to Christopher. Of course, in the end Tony killed the kid, played by Michael Imperioli. But you know, families….

I’m excited about Vera Farmiga playing Tony’s mother, Livia. And the press is all over Michael Gandolfini as young Tony. The movie debuts in theaters and on HBO Max on October 1st. Boy, do we need this movie to be good!

John Lennon’s “Imagine” Album 50th Anniversary Worldwide Celebration Set for September 9th

0

Next Thursday, September 9th there will be a worldwide observation of the 50th anniversary of John Lennon’s “Imagine” album.

“Imagine” was actually released in October 1971. But 9/9 seems appropriate for Lennon, who wrote “Revolution No. 9,” #9 Dream,” and was born on 10/9 and died on 12/9.

Anyway the family has selected 9/9/21. Yoko & Sean Ono Lennon, the Estate of John Lennon and Universal Music Group will host a Global Party.

At 11:30am PDT/2:30 pm EDT/7:30 pm BST on September 9, fans around the world are invited to watch the Imagine film together, either online or in person at participating venues. Yoko Ono Lennon, Mercury Studios and partners including The Coda Collection, Hard Rock and Music Venue Trust will make the film available for free, while Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess’ hugely popular Tim’s Twitter Listening Party will host a simultaneous online Listening Party event.

Yoko & Sean Ono Lennon, the Estate of John Lennon and Universal Music Group will host a Global Party to celebrate the 50th anniversary of John’s “Imagine” song, album and film on September 9. The event will honor one of the most famous and beloved songs and universal messages in music history.

“John and I were both artists and we were living together, so we inspired each other,” says Yoko. “The song ‘Imagine’ embodied what we believed together at the time. John and I met – he comes from the West and I come from the East – and still we are together. We have this oneness and ‘the whole world would eventually become one’ is the sense that we will all be very happy together. All these instructions are for people for how to spend eternity, because we have lots of time.”

The unique global status of “Imagine” was emphasized yet again during the opening ceremony of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, where it was reimagined by the celebrated composer Hans Zimmer for a worldwide audience in the hundreds of millions. It began the celebrations for both the Olympics and the song’s own golden anniversary.

John & Yoko’s Imagine, one of the first full-length conceptual music films, was also released in 1971 and contains all the songs from John’s Imagine album; four from Yoko’s Fly; and a few additional pieces. In 2018, under Yoko’s supervision, the film was completely reassembled to HD in 2018 from the original 16mm negative reels and cleaned and digitally restored frame-by-frame with the audio completely remixed in 5.1 surround sound and Dolby Atmos by triple Grammy-award winning engineer and mixer, Paul Hicks.

Confirmed participants for Tim’s Twitter Listening Party are: Yoko Ono Lennon; the Estates of John Lennon, George Harrison and Nicky Hopkins; plus Sean Ono Lennon, bassist Klaus Voormann, drummer Alan White, cameraman Nic Knowland, factotum Dan Richter, and MC Tim Burgess, with more to be announced soon. (Paul? Ringo? Julian?)

Getting Ready for ABBA Announcement Thursday, 12: 45PM Here, Watch First American TV Interview 1976

0

ABBA Makes their big announcement Thursday at 12:45pm right here via Youtube. New Music? New tour of avatars? Anyone speaking to each other? We’ll get the whole story all together. ABBA fans will go crazy. People who speak Hebrew will think we’re discussing their fathers. Should be fun!

In the meantime, the brilliant Steve Leeds, now a big deal at Sirius XM, told me about booking ABBA on their first American TV show in 1976. He was working at Atlantic Records where they’d been signed by Jerry Greenberg. All Steve could get them on originally was “Wonderama,” the beloved New York kids show hosted then by Bob McAllister. The rest is history.

Here’s the clip:
