Paul McCartney May Headline Glastonbury Festival A Week After Turning 80 This June

0

A mysterious Wordle message on Twitter from Paul McCartney indeed has a lot of meaning.

From the looks of the message, fans are speculating McCartney will be headlining the Glastonbury Music Festival in the Uk on June 25th. That’s one week after he turns 80. Paul already has 13 stadium dates planned for the US just prior to Glastonbury, this one may kick off his UK tour.

The Wordle message indicates 121 — as in 121 days til the fest. And the numbers — 25/6 — are the British way of writing the date.

The five letters from Wordle could spell out GLASTO. They could also spell out RINGO. Or Nancy, Paul’s wife. Or APPLE, his famous label. Or BEATLE.

The only other announced stars for Glastonbury so far are Billie Eilish, and Diana Ross in the Legends Spot. If Diana’s in the Legends spot, where would that leave Paul?

“Mrs. Maisel” 3 & 4: Alex Borstein Gives Her Emmy Performance, John Waters Turns Up on a Park Bench

0

“Mrs. Maisel,” season 4, episodes 3 & 4 drop Friday sometime after midnight on Amazon Prime.

SOME SPOILERS LIE AHEAD….

There’s the good, the bad, and the I don’t know.

On the plus side, which is most of it, Midge’s job at the strip club, what I would call a burlesque house in 1960, is a total hit. Tony winner Santino Fontana, the only Broadway star not in The Gilded Age, is the manager. The production values and costumes are off the charts. The girls are wonderful and I hope we see more of them.

On the downside, Midge — who is going out on dates — seems aimless. She’s treading water in these episodes, looking for a unifying theme for this season. Rachel Brosnahan is giving it her all but show creators Daniel Palladino and Amy Sherman Palladino feel a little adrift. I hope they have a plan because we’re already at episode 4.

Episode 3 addresses the loss of Jackie, Susie’s roommate and the manager of their little village nightclub, the Gaslight. In real life actor Brian Tarantina died during the pandemic from a drug overdose. In the “Maisel” world, the cause of death is a stroke. His death obviously affected the cast and crew because Jackie’s death is sort of brilliantly handled and not swept under the rug. Alex Borstein’s speech/rant at his funeral is Emmy worthy. She pulls it off with aplomb. But there’s no payoff plot-wise to Jackie’s death. which is a shame. No surprise reveal or legacy.

There’s also a segment I can’t say I’ve seen before on TV and not really even in a Woody Allen movie at this length. It takes place in a synagogue at a bar mitzvah to which the main players  have been mistakenly invited. It’s right out of a Woody Allen movie and maybe the most Jewish thing I’ve ever seen on a regular TV show. It’s very funny.

There are a couple of strange things going on. Midge decides that Susie is a lesbian (Susie has never stated this, it’s just her look). Midge roams around Greenwich Village idiotically asking strangers for the name of a lesbian bar.  She finally gets it from a man on a bench played by the great John Waters. When Midge takes her there, Susie is outraged and leaves. Whatever happens next, I couldn’t figure out– she retrieves a drunk from another bar and installs him at her new office. This part was murky. Also, in episode 4, actor Reid Scott from “Veep” is credited but I could not find him. Plus, in Joel’s Chinatown bar there’s a poster for contemporary singer James Bay. Or someone named James Bay, but the poster is large and definitely there for a reason.

Episode 4 also features Jason Alexander, returning as Abe’s old friend, failed playwright Asher, who’s always a pleasure. But the episode ends an odd note that I didn’t understand. Midge falls off the stage and people just walk away as the credits roll. If this was a joke, I missed it.

Last season, Midge’s opening for Shy Baldwin was the overarching story, and it worked to carry all the episodes. This season just feels pedestrian so far. Even a pop-in from Lenny Bruce (Luke Kirby) was kind of wasted. But we can’t give up. The Palladinos are too smart not to have a plan. I hope.

PS I’m told that the end of episode 4 will be resolved in Episode 5, even though it was strange the way it went down. And the guy Susie snatches from the bar hearkens back to Episode 1 when she was hypnotized, but it will be explained also in Episode 5. Whew!

RIP The Great Sally Kellerman, 84, The Original Hot Lips Houlihan from “MASH”

0

I was at the screening of “The Batman” when news broke of Sally Kellerman’s death. She was 84 and had been in declining health for some time.

Sally was the original Hot Lips Houlihan from Robert Altman’s movie, “MASH.” She was an Altman favorite and long time friend of both Bob and Kathryn Altman. Bob featured her in many other films including Brewster McCloud, Ready to Wear, The Player and the Altman-produced “Welcome to L.A.” directed by Alan Rudolf.

Her first film was “Reform School Girl” in 1957. She went on to spend most of the 1960s in various television appearances, with her big break coming in “MASH.” She earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, as well as nominations for a Golden Globe and the Kansas City Film Critics Circle award for Best Supporting Actress.

Sally had a sly sense of humor that was also very sexy. Whenever she appeared on screen, she had a distinct personality that set her apart from all other actresses. She was also smart, and quick, which gave her a foot up in roles. She was very good at droll satire, which is why Altman liked her so much. I don’t know if Bill Persky’s “Serial” from 1980 is around, but it’s worth finding to her in it. Some of her other movies were “Last of the Red Hot Lovers,” “Slither,” “The April Fools,” and “Back to School,” as well as television shows Star Trek, The Twilight Zone, Bonanza, and The Outer Limits.

I was lucky enough to know Sally over the years. Unfortunately, she was married to a sketchy guy who had financial troubles, producer Jonathan Krane, once the partner of John Travolta. He died a few years ago. Krane had worked for producer-director Blake Edwards who felt that Krane had not been above board with him. But she was one of those great ladies, with a big smile and a hearty laugh who embraced everyone. She will be sorely missed.

No Sex Please, We’re British: “Bridgerton” Season 2 Said to Be Almost Sex Scene Free After Season 1 Debauchery

0

“Bridgerton” fans were gaga over all the sex scenes in Season 1.

The debauchery and romping, which included an orgy and gay sex, made Regé-Jean Page the “it’ guy of 2020. He got the fans through the pandemic. They were swooning at every episode.

But then came news that Page wouldn’t be in season 2, as the books this Netfix series is based on turn to Anthony Bridgerton’s search for a wife.

Anthony is played by Jonathan Bailey. I’m told that in the first episode of Season 2, Anthony is scene from behind fully as he very briefly beds whores and pays them for their services. But sources say that after that season, “Bridgerton” Season 2 is largely sexless. There’s a lot of talking and galloping. But no shenanigans, certainly nothing like Season 1.

What happened? If reports are true, and I think they are, “Bridgerton” is now more of period piece that bears no resemblance to the period it’s covering. The costumes and sets are still top notch, but the story doesn’t have the pizzazz it once did.

Strange, no? In Season 1 Anthony was humping everything in town. But in Season 2, I guess he’s given up. Maybe Simon Bassett needs to return for a cameo!

Here’s a look back:

Willie Nelson Sets 98th Studio Album “A Beautiful Time” to Celebrate 89th Birthday Featuring 5 New Songs

0

Willie Nelson is eternal.

For his 89th birthday, Willie is releasing a whole new album featuring 5 new songs he wrote with collaborator Buddy Cannon.

Are you ready for this? It’s Willie’s 98th studio album according to Wikipedia. If you see him, ask him what number 47 was. I’ll bet he knows!

“A Beautiful Time” comes on Friday,April 29th. Amazing. It also includes covers of Leonard Cohen’s “Tower of Song” and The Beatles’ “With a Little Help from My Friends.”

Produced by Willie’s longtime musical collaborator Buddy Cannon, “A Beautiful Time” is “a fully-realized new studio album” showcasing Willie and Trigger (his signature guitar) playing with musicians including Jim “Moose” Brown (B-3 organ, Wurlitzer), Fred Elringham (drums), Barry Bales (upright bass), Bob Terry (electric guitar, acoustic guitar, steel guitar), James Mitchell (electric guitar) and the patented harmonic stylings of Mickey Raphael. Melonie Cannon sings backup on five of the album’s tracks.

There’s nothing new to post so here’s something great from the past

Justin Bieber Cancels Third Show Because of COVID, Will Miss Los Angeles Date

Justin Bieber, suffering from COVID-19, has cancelled his third show in a row.

Bieber has rescheduled tonight’s show at the Forum in Inglewood, Los Angeles. He’ll make it up on July 2nd.

Bieber reportedly attended a Super Bowl party on February 13th where he was likely unmasked. It’s also unclear if he was ever vaccinated. The result is this massive debacle involving not just him but also his crew, the venues, and the fans.

His next dates are still scheduled.

Ratings: “Billions” Jumped Whopping 70% Sunday and Beat Also Soaring “Euphoria” (Up 24%)

0

No “Yellowstone.” Hallelujah.

The absence of the horse opera and the apathy toward the Olympics really paid off for two high quality cable shows on Sunday night.

“Billions,” now midway through its sixth season, rose an astounding 70% from last week. The total viewership was 374,000. The prior week “Billions” had been down 30% because of the Olympics. Even counting that in, the top notch drama starring Paul Giamatti, Maggie Siff, David Costabile, Jeffrey DeMunn, Condola Rashad, and Corey Stoll jumped 40% over last week. Damian Lewis should never have left!

Now maybe Showtime can get “Billions” some Emmy love. This has gone on too long!

“Euphoria” on HBO also increased, by almost 24%. Again, “Euphoria” had fallen in the prior week because of the Olympics, but its increase was significant. “Euphoria” finished second to “Billions” at 9pm on linear cable, but it still picked up 350,000 viewers. HBO will say a couple million more watched it on other platforms and that’s fine. This past episode, with Lexi’s school play. was something to behold. If nothing else, it was a good recap of the season so far.

There’s so much TV, why leave the house? “Mrs. Maisel,” “Inventing Anna,” plus coming to HBO is John C. Reilly in “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty.”

One last TV note: tomorrow night, Anthony Anderson is back and so is “Law & Order” on NBC. Anthony is also hosting a game show and still starring in “Blackish” both on ABC. He is the hardest working man in show biz!

Tom Brady Movie with Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin Brings in Rita Moreno, Sally Field for 2 Other Big Names

0

Big news today about a Tom Brady movie. Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, of “Grace and Frankie” fame, are toplining the comedy about four friends who are huge Brady fans and go on a road trip to see him.

Brady will play himself in the movie and be a producer on the film. “80 for Brady” will be directed by Kyle Marvin, who also co-wrote the script with Michael Covino. DOnna Gigliotti, of “Silver Linings Playbook” and “Shakespeare in Love,” is the producer along with Brady and Endeavor Content.

Added to the cast are Sally Field and Rita Morena. Yes, 90 year old Rita Moreno, of “West Side Story” fame, is in this movie. She’s hot as a pistol.

Field is old friends with Fonda. She’s perfect in this quad of pals.

But here’s a little exclusive: I’m told that the original quad started with Fonda, Tomlin, plus Carol Burnett and Julie Andrews. In the fall, this looked like the cast. But in the history of deals in Hollywood, changes happen all the time. It would have been nice to see Burnett and Andrews, who themselves are old pals. But Field and Moreno are A list.

So here we go with Tom Brady, movie producer and part time movie producer.

Lowest Ratings Ever: “The Walking Dead” Returns with First Episode Since October, Dropped Another 8%

0

“The Walking Dead” is crawling dead, to its end. I don’t understand why there are spin offs coming.

Sunday night’s episode was the first since October. The show returned down 8.25% with just 1.756 million viewers. That’s literally one-tenth pf its 17 million when the series was all the rage. That was a long time ago.

The ratings have collapsed over time, this whole last run, since it began in August. But with this disappointing return, things are only going to get worse. Where did all the viewers go? I guess all their favorite characters have been eaten or whatever.

“Andy Warhol Diaries” Doc Controversy: Uses A.I. to Recreate Artist’s Voice for Fake Narration

0

Producer Ryan Murphy was certainly on a roll with shows like “Glee,” and “Feud” and “American Horror Story.”

But his Monica Lewinsky mini series was kind of a dud. It just seemed to go on and on to no point.

Now Murphy returns to Netflix with a promising Andy Warhol documentary. Andrew Rossi directed the six part series that begins March 9th. I will be watching keenly.

The doc, “Andy Warhol Diaries,” courts controversy. Rossi has used artificial intelligence to re-create Warhol’s voice so that the artist — dead since 1987 — offers dialogue he never said.

Pat Hackett published the Diaries after Andy died. There was no audio book. So the filmmakers have made their own.

What the heck? This is verboten in the documentary world. And I don’t know why it was considered necessary. Very weird and alarming.
