Dolly Parton Jumps from 5th to 4th Place in Rock Hall Fan Vote After Asking to Be Removed

0

Dolly Parton knows what she’s doing.

The country superstar asked yesterday to be removed from consideration for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The result is that Dolly’s jumped from 5th to 4th place on the Rock Hall’s public fan vote. She’s now ahead of the Eurythmics and behind Duran Duran, Eminem, and Pat Benatar.

Dolly says she’s not rock and roll. But to me she’s more appropriate to the Hall than Eminem, who doesn’t play instruments or compose music can’t actually sing. Dolly can do all those things brilliantly.

The fan vote doesn’t really matter. In the end, the Rock Hall voters will cast their ballots and whoever gets in, gets in. I’m voting for Carly Simon, Duran Duran, Benatar, Dionne Warwick, and the Eurythmics. If you could vote for two more, I’d add Dolly, and Eminem just for fun.

Marshall Mathers will get in no matter what I do because he’s current and the voters are getting younger. There’s an HBO TV show to think of, so the Rock Hall wants those people now. But still so many real heroes of pop and rock are still not in, including Neil Sedaka, Chubby Checker, the late Mary Wells, Rufus and Carla Thomas, and so on.

As for Dolly, so far the Rock Hall has not responded to taking her name off the ballot. So she may have to turn up in Cleveland and accept her award anyway.

Exclusive: Controversial Director Tony Kaye (“American History X”) Looking at Comeback with Vito Schnabel’s “The Trainer”

0

There wasn’t a more controversial movie in 1998 as “American History X.” The director, Tony Kaye, was divisive and a lightning rod for trouble.

Kaye came from commercials and videos. And when “American History X” receded into history as a flop, that’s where Kaye returned. He’s made a few films since then, some unreleased, all unattended. It’s been a decade since his last offering, “Detachment,” which was unrated, undistributed, and unseen. “Detachment” had an all star cast with Adrien Brody, Marcia Gay Harden, Blythe Danner, James Caan, and Christina Hendricks. But over six weeks in 2012 it made just $70,000.

Now I’m hearing that Kaye has signed to direct his first film in years that will really get off the ground. “The Trainer” stars and was written by someone we don’t think of as an actor: Vito Schnabel, the art gallerist son of famed painter Julian Schnabel. Vito is 35 years old, and, aside from having four iterations of his galleries, is best known for dating hot women including Heidi Klum, Irina Shayk, and Amber Heard.

Vito, I’m told, wrote “The Trainer,” and had planned to direct it. But to write, direct, and star in a first movie is a tall order. Enter Kaye. Schnabel’s film will feature Julia Fox, who recently dated Kanye West, and a bevy of famous people from Schnabel’s world.

Vito comes from a movie family. His dad has made some amazing films like “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly,” “Basquiat,” “Before Night Falls,” and “At Eternity’s Gate.” Vito’s sister, Stella, has a long list of film credits. So the genetic predisposition is there.

Again, “The Trainer,” I am told, will have a lot of surprise cameos including one from “Soprano’s” star Stevie van Zandt, aka the leader of the E Street Band and the Disciples of Soul. Filming, I’m told, is imminent. Mark this one under “want to see ASAP.”

Oscars Add More Presenters from Music World Including Sean Diddy Combs and Pop Star Shawn Mendes

0

The Oscars are adding more and more presenters from different worlds.

New t0 the list today for the March 27th broadcast are rap entrepreneur Sean “Diddy” Combs and pop star Shawn Mendes. All they have in common is the same first name spelled differently. But they will definitely pique the interests of new Oscar viewers.

Also on today’s list are Samuel L. Jackson, who’s getting a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy on Oscar weekend and Jamie Lee Curtis. Plus pop star Halle Bailey (coming soon in her first three movies), Woody Harrelson, Tyler Perry, and Tracee Ellis Ross.

Previously the Academy announced Ruth E. Carter, Kevin Costner, Anthony Hopkins, Lily James, Daniel Kaluuya, Zoë Kravitz, Mila Kunis, Lady Gaga, John Leguizamo, Simu Liu, Rami Malek, Lupita Nyong’o, Rosie Perez, Chris Rock, Naomi Scott, Wesley Snipes, Uma Thurman, John Travolta and Yuh-Jung Youn.

I told you exclusively that Dame Judi Dench would be attending the ceremony. Even thought she’s in the Oscar nominated “Belfast,” it would be very classy to have her announce Best Picture. Maybe she could be paired with Hopkins, who won Best Actor last year but wasn’t able to attend because he was off sheep herding.

Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes, and Regina Hall are hosting the show.

“SNL” Drops Again Despite “The Batman” Star Zoe Kravitz Hosting with Musical Guest Rosalia

0

I missed “Saturday Night Live” this past weekend and it seems like a lot of others did, too.

“SNL” scored just 4.359 million viewers, down from over 4.4 million last weekend.

The lower numbers are a surprise considering that the host, Zoe Kravitz, is the co-star of the number 1 smash movie, “The Batman.” It’s not like they hid the fact, either. There were many references to her Catwoman character.

Musical guest Rosalia brought no fans, either. While she certainly has a following, Rosalia is just not the “SNL” audience. As it is, “SNL” rarely sells much music for its performers. Rosalia was no exception.

So now what? Also, why is Lorne Michaels allowing Pete Davidson to be gone so long? Davidson’s upcoming flight to “space” with Elon Musk isn’t going to drum up higher ratings.

In other ratings news, “60 Minutes” scored 8 million viewers Sunday night and won the evening. It beat “American Idol” and everything else. What’s more, the venerable news magazine didn’t get their big numbers from a lead in. The basketball special that preceded it was considerably lower. Don Hewitt is smiling in heaven.

“Power of the Dog” Director Jane Campion Apologizes (Unnecessarily) to Serena and Venus Williams

0

“Power of the Dog” director Jane Campion is apologizing to Serena and Venus Williams today.

For heaven’s sake, it’s not necessary

On the Critics Choice Awards last night, when Campion won Best Director, she said, “Venus and Serena, you’re such marvels. However, you don’t play against the guys, like I have to.”

The tennis star sisters were there to celebrate the movie “King Richard.” Campion had first praised them, then in a moment of a little hubris, added that line. She meant nothing by it, but the audience groaned en masse.

The Williams sisters didn’t mind. They came to the Netflix after party and danced with Campion and stayed til the end. Venus hugged Campion and posed for pictures. Serena was a little cooler, but she was having fun nonetheless.

We live in a world now where good people are made to apologize for nothing, and bad people refuse to apologize for anything!

Campion’s apology reads, “I made a thoughtless comment equating what I do in the film world with all that Serena Williams and Venus Williams have achieved. I did not intend to devalue these two legendary Black women and world class athletes. The fact is the Williams sisters have, actually, squared off against men on the court (and off), and they have both raised the bar and opened doors for what is possible for women in this world. The last thing I would ever want to do is minimize remarkable women. I love Serena and Venus. Their accomplishments are titanic and inspiring. Serena and Venus, I apologize and completely celebrate you.”

NBC Posts Lowest Sunday Non Football Ratings Ever, Cancels Popular “New Amsterdam” After Upcoming 5th Season

0

NBC is kinda in a lot of trouble.

Last night the network scored its lowest non football Sunday ratings ever. The total was just over 1 million viewers.

The opening show, “The Courtship.” at 8pm, had just 587,000 viewers. The next two shows had 1.45 million and 1..11 million apiece.

Those are lower numbers than “Days of our Lives,” which runs at noon everyday.

For NBC, one of the three major networks, to post numbers that low, it’s as if they just gave up. They could have run any of their Peacock shows instead and done at least twice that amount.

To commemorate this disaster, the network is also giving up on hospital drama, “New Amsterdam.” Now in its fourth season, the network will allow it to wrap up a 13 episode 5th season and then say goodbye. Canceled.

Soon NBC will bring back low rated comedies, “Kenan,” and “Young Rock.” They will also lose their only hit, “This Is Us,” which is coming to a weepy end. NBC will stand for No Body Cares. Yikes.

Too bad they didn’t keep “The Gilded Age” instead of letting it move to HBO. It does seem that soon all NBC will have will be shows they own but no one watches (“The Blacklist”) and game shows and throwaways.

Dolly Parton Asks For Name to Be Removed from Rock Hall Consideration, Doesn’t Think She’s Qualified

0

Say what now?

For some reason, Dolly Parton doesn’t think she’s qualified to be in the Rock Hall. She’s asked for her name to removed from the voting.

How very strange. She says now she’s inspired to put out a great rock and roll album. But what Dolly doesn’t seem to get is that country music is one of the many roots of rock and roll. And she is the gold standard in country. Country, like blues, R&B, bluegrass, Cajun, all of it is one of the many ingredients in the rock and roll meal.

I do hope the Rock Hall ignores the request.

Critics Choice Awards Pick “Power of the Dog” Best Feature, Setting Up Path to Academy Awards

For the second time Sunday, Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” won Best Picture, this time at the Critics Choice Awards seen live on TBS and the CW Network.

In a well produced three hours plus hosted by Taye Diggs and Nicole Byer the CCAs anointed “Dog” plus reaffirmed the four actors who won Screen Actors Guild Awards last week: Will Smith, Jessica Chastain, Troy Kotsur, and Ariana De Bose.

The ballroom at the Fairmont Century Plaza was packed to the gills with celebrities and A list stars. But there was also a video hook up to London, where CCA nominees who’d attended the BAFTA awards could participate in the Hollywood show.

“The Power of the Dog” now has a clear path to Best Picture at the Academy Awards after winning these two events on the same day. Campion won Best Director at the Directors Guild on Saturday might. The next hurdle is the Producers Guild Awards next week. If “Dog” can swing that honor, its coronation is a foregone conclusion.

After the show, Netflix hosted an ebullient victory party at the new Century Plaza’s Lumiere restaurant. Both Serena and Venus Williams attended, even though their movie “King Richard” about their father, lost to “Dog.” The Williams sisters danced up a storm with Jane Campion, Maggie Gyllenhaal, director of “the Lost Daughter,” also a Netflix film, and studio chief Ted Sarandos. Also at the party: Lin Manuel Miranda, Jamie Dornan, Nat Wolff, Kaitlyn Dever, Joshua Jackson and wife Jodie Turner-Smith, among others.

Some of the other winning films and actors had their own private gatherings throughout the hotel.

Marlee Matlin, star of “CODA,” arrived but left as soon as the show was over. She was mourning the death of her original co-star, William Hurt, from “Children of a Lesser God.” They were an item in the mid 80s. Hurt, 71, died from prostate cancer it was announced earlier Sunday.

Me? I got to meet Amber Ruffin. My night was made!

More notes from the CCA show later Monday…

UPDATED: Mick Jagger Teases, The Rolling Stones Announce 60th Anniversary Tour and New Album, New Logo

0

The Rolling Stones are going out on a 60th anniversary tour! New album, too.

Even without Charlie Watts — or in his memory. We’re down to Mick and Keith and Ronnie Wood with lots of special guests. But in the end we still want to see and hear them. I know I do.

Keep refreshing for more details…I think it’s hilarious they dropped all this in the middle of the BAFTA Awards!

UPDATED Here’s the official announcement today, Monday, followed by the earlier teases:
