“The Gilded Age” Ends Its First Season with A Social Chess Game and a Lot of Potential for the Future

0

Julian Fellowes‘ long delayed “The Gilded Age” ended its first season tonight with a lot of potential. But it took a long time to get there.

When the first episodes were unveiled, the series — set in 1882 Manhattan — felt like a pale reminder of “Downton Abbey.” Many of the characters, especially those working “down below,” were reminiscent of Mrs. Patmore and Carson and Mrs. Hughes, etc.

On top of that, some of the acting was very awkward and the cast was uneven. Christine Baranski and Cynthia Nixon hit their stride right away. But Carrie Coon, who plays the manipulative and social climbing Mrs. Russell, felt out of her depth. Her cadences were harsh and she seemed uncertain of who Mrs. Russell was or what she was up to.

Luckily, by tonight’s full episode, Mrs. Russell pulled it together. I’m still not cheering over Coon’s speech pattern, but she definitely feels more settled in the role. She had to tonight. All of Mrs. Russell’s machinations– using her daffy daughter to negotiate a place in society — came together. At the same time, her husband’s JR Ewing like jockeying paid off for her. Morgan Spector is really grinning like a Cheshire cat with the character of Mr. Russell.

“The Gilded Age” has a well off Black family living in Brooklyn, who I love even though I’m not sure how much verisimilitude is there. But Denée Benton and six time Tony winner Audra McDonald are so perfect in their roles as daughter and mother, let their stories continue and grow, please. There’s also a gay story that seems a little far fetched for its time and modeled on “Downton Abbey,” but alright, it’s going to get interesting.

In the end, though, “The Gilded Age” is about class, not race or sex. It’s about “new money” forcing itself into the old world. Fellowes stops just short of revealing the Russells are Jewish, although Mr. Russell makes reference to a Jewish banking firm. Baranski’s Agnes van Rijhn is very snobby, impatient with all newcomers, but has a tenderness for Black people. (We don’t know what she’ll say if she discovers her son is gay.)

I can’t help think of one of Baranski’s golden moments in movies: she plays Claus von Bulow’s girlfriend, Andrea Reynolds, in “Reversal of Fortune.” von Bulow summons lawyer Alan Dershowitz (Ron Silver) to defend him. Baranski enters the room as Jeremy Irons (von Bulow)  interviews Dershowitz. Waggng a finger, Reynolds pipes up, “I made him hire you. Get the Jew, I said.” No kidding, this is all over Aunt Agnes’s face now whenever the Russells are mentioned. It’s too funny. Baranski and Nixon, playing her sweet sister, must get Emmy Awards.

The great pleasures of “The Gilded Age,” by the way,” are all the Broadway actors. Donna Murphy as Mrs, Astor, Michael Cerveris as a mysterious butler, etc. But my favorite, to my surprise, is Kelli O’Hara as the cousin who is guiding young Marian (Louisa Jacobson). O’Hara is a Broadway superstar who’s never had a good TV or movie role. It turns out she’s killing it. I can’t wait to see more of her story.

The show hinges on  ingenue Marian, niece of the wealthy society sisters played by Baranski and Nixon. Yes, Jacobson is Meryl Streep‘s daughter in real life, but Jacobson has found her rhythm. She is clearly the central character, the one who we’re rooting for among all these bustles and footmen. Her Marian managed to dodge a bad marriage tonight, but what fun Fellowes will have devising her next chapter. So we wait for Season 2. but just one thing: someone turn down the sharpness of the lighting!

Exclusive: Oscar Isaac Passes on “Godfather” Director Francis Ford Coppola’s$120 Mil “Megalopolis,” Director Wants to Shoot This Fall

0

DOUBLE EXCLUSIVE: LAST NIGHT I learned that Oscar Isaac, long rumored to star in Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, has passed on making the film. So the search is on to find a new star of Coppola’s $120 million epic which the famed director wants to shoot this fall.

Isaac is currently starring in Marvel’s “Moon Knight” on Disney Plus, just came off a big year with “Scenes from a Marriage” on HBO, and “Dune.” He is always working. Perhaps he couldn’t fit “Megalopolis” into his busy schedule.

Earlier I wrote: Coppola is celebrating the 50th anniversary of “The Godfather” this week. He got his star on the Walk of Fame today, and on Sunday he and the cast and producer Al Ruddy will be honored at the Academy Awards.

Let’s face it, “The Godfather” and “The Godfather II” are the best movies since “Citizen Kane.”

Now I’m told Coppola will start shooting his next blockbuster in September. The shoot will go from September through January, largely in New York, on sound stages, and maybe in Europe.

The stars of “Megalopolis” are said to be Oscar Isaac — playing architect who wants to reimagine New York, as well as Zendaya, Cate Blanchett, and Michelle Pfeiffer among others.

The cost is $120 million, and Coppola told GQ recently he’ll fund it himself if he can’t find financing. Coppola has made a fortune from a lot of thing besides movies, including his famed winery. He’s visionary, that’s for sure. Everyone wants this to be a tremendous hit.

Pre-Oscar Parties In Small Spaces Looking Less Attractive Every Day as New COVID Variant Rears Its Ugly Head

Oscar Music Lining Up for Show: No Van Morrison, Beyonce At the Courts, Reba for the Country Crowd

0

The Oscars are lining up their music acts for Sunday.

We still don’t have confirmed word about Billie Eilish or the cast of “Encanto,” but they seem like sure bets.

I can tell you my Van Morrison sources confirm that he will not be performing “Down to Joy” from “Belfast.” Since the Academy would let him without a mask or even a vaccination, that is not the issue. Or maybe he doesn’t want to take a COVID test. Van marches to his own, strange drummer.

Who will sing that song? Still up in the air. (They should get Bono. That would be a “get.”)

I have heard that Reba McEntire will sing the Diane Warren written “Somehow You Do.” It’s Warren’s 13th nomination. It would be swell if she won already.

Variety is reporting that Beyonce is possibly performing “Be Alive” from the tennis courts in Compton where Richard Williams started with daughters Serena and Venus. This seems strange, wouldn’t it be better to have her live in the Dolby Theater? Oh well. Beyonce does what she wants, too.

But there will be plenty of music and buzz on Sunday night one way or another.

I’m looking forward to these Oscars. I hope everyone else is, too!

Oscars Add Sports Stars Shaun White, Kelly Slater, Tony Hawk to Eclectic Presenters List

The Oscars are getting more and more eclectic. They’ve added Shaun White, Kelly Slater, and Tony Hawk to the list of presenters. Also DJ Khaled.

This is going to be an interesting show, that’s for sure. A lot of the presenters have nothing to do with movies. But producer Will Packer is obviously trying to broaden the audience.

Also new to the list are Bill Murray, Tiffany Haddish, singer HER, and Jennifer Garner.

The Oscars are this Sunday on ABC.

“SNL” Sets April Shows with Lizzo, Jake Gyllenhaal, Camila Cabello, Unknowns

0

SNL is returning April 2 with three consecutive weekends of shows.

For April 16th they’ve got Lizzo as host and musical guest.

April 9th will be Jake Gyllenhaal and musical guest Camila Cabello.

But first we get Jerrod Carmichael and Gunna.  Who? We can write off the ratings on that one.

Maybe Pete Davidson will be back for these shows. Dressed as an astronaut.

Straw Poll Suggests Few Have Bought Kanye West’s $200 Stem Player with New Album Included

0

We took a poll the other day.

The question, on Twitter, was Have you bought Kanye West’s Stem Player with his new album, “Donda 2”? The album is only available on the player.

The answers could be Yes or No.

Of the 68 people who responded, 92.9% answered No. Yes answers were 7.4%.

I think that answers our question in this very informal test. “Donda 2,” if it’s been heard, hasn’t come from the Stem Player.

Kano Computing of London, owned by Alex Klein and his dad, Saul Klein, must have a lot of those little blinking beige objects that resemble Bayer aspirins sitting in a warehouse. Blimey!

“Donda 2” is going to have to be released properly if Kanye ever wants his fans to hear it. Or maybe one day it will be part of a box set costing hundreds of dollars as a collectible.

Adele Special Bombs on NBC Sunday with Just 2 Mil Viewers, Used to Promote New Singing Competition

0

Adele bombed in the Sunday night ratings.

Her “Another Night with Adele,” filmed in London last November, scored just 2 million viewers for NBC between 9 and 11 pm.

“American Idol,” overlapped from 8 to 10pm on ABC, and scored about 5.2 million.

The Adele special was cut badly from the London version with abrupt switches to commercials. It was also used as a wrap around for a night of promotion for a new NBC singing competition with Kelly Clarkson and Snoop Dogg. Some of the latter’s segments seemed longer than Adele’s.

The result was NBC finished in third place behind ABC and CBS.

“60 Minutes” on CBS stole the night with 9.39 million.

Adele turning up on NBC suggests that she didn’t make an overall deal with CBS this winter when her Oprah special aired. But it’s hard to imagine she won’t be featured on the Grammy Awards April 3rd. Her “30” album needs a boost. Last night’s show sent it up to number 2 on iTunes. It had been down around number 30 just prior to that.

Beyonce and Jay Z Oscar Party Will Be at Shuttered Restaurant Cited for Racial Discrimination and Bias

When the pandemic started, Hollywood’s Chateau Marmont closed to hotel guests. All its facilities closed down except to residents.

But that won’t stop Jay Z and Beyonce. They’re going to have their Oscars after party at Bar Marmont, which is also closed and has been for the last two years.

Their party will feature Black Hollywood’s top actors and rappers. It seems they haven’t read the Hollywood Reporter story from September 2020 that claimed “Employees portray the hotel as an institution defined by racial prejudice.”

So it’s a an odd choice for Jay Z and Beyonce.

From the article: “The leadership operates in a perpetual state of racism and unconscious bias,” says Rosemary West, a white sommelier and manager who worked at the restaurant for six years until she, too, was laid off. “The hotel has been allowed to dismiss BIPOC concerns for years as there is no HR department. Fear of retaliation was an absolute concern at the property. Many qualified personnel were passed over for promotions to be filled by white personnel.”

I’m surprised, I always loved Chateau Marmont. But a) it’s closed and b) this has never been resolved.

Also from the article:

“There were times when we’d have a Black couple who was trying to have dinner and we had room to accommodate them,” [a staffer] says. “We would call upstairs, we’d say, ‘an African American couple,’ they’d ask if they were celebrities, and if not, they’d say, ‘We can put them in the dining room,’ which is secluded and where newcomers are seated. The main spot to dine is the garden area, so people seated [inside] felt isolated. Oftentimes they’d go, be disappointed, and then we’d offer them Bar Marmont or we’d say, ‘Come by on Sunday or Monday,’ which are our less busy nights.” He adds, “Black people weren’t taken care of as much as white people.”

Writers Guild Awards to “CODA,” “Don’t Look Up,” “Succession,” “Hacks,” “Days of our Lives”

0

“CODA” picked up another award today, this one with the Writers Guild of America for Best Adapted Screenplay. Director Sian Heder, who wrote the script, accepted and frankly this movie is on a roll. Of course, some films were ineligible, like “The Power of the Dog,” but this is good news.

The surprise in original screenplay was Adam McKay winning for “Don’t Look Up.” McKay beat Paul Thomas Anderson and “Licorice Pizza.” Alas, “Belfast,” which I think will take the Oscar, was ineligible. But kudos to McKay.

TV Awards went to “Succession” for drama and “Hacks” for comedy. “Mare of Easttown” won for Original Adapted Long Form TV.

Ron Carlivati and his team won the daytime drama award for “Days of our Lives,” the NBC soap that’s been on since 1965. Carlivati’s show is very inventive and deserves it for trying new things all the time no matter how preposterous. They manage to leaven the crazy with the dramatic.

Congrats also to “Conan” writers Matt O’Brien; Writers: Jose Arroyo, Glenn Boozan, Daniel Cronin, Andres du Bouchet, Jessie Gaskell, Skyler Higley, Brian Kiley, Laurie Kilmartin, Todd Levin, Levi MacDougall, Conan O’Brien, Andy Richter, Frank Smiley, Mike Sweeney. Such a good show, they worked so hard– and beat John Oliver.

“West Side Story” Star Rachel Zegler Laments She Wasn’t Invited to the Oscars: “I hope some last minute miracle occurs”

0

Maria is not going to the ball.

Rachel Zegler, the much praised star of Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story,” is not attending the Oscars.

Despite the movie getting 7 nominations, Zegler was not one of those cited. She responded to a fan on social media who asked what gown she would be wearing. Zegler replied: “I’m not invited so sweatpants and my boyfriend’s flannel.”

On another post she wrote: “I will root for west side story from my couch.” She added: “I hope some last minute miracle occurs and I can celebrate our film in person…”

It is a strange plot twist seeing that Disney released this movie and is hosting the Oscars on ABC. She’s also the star of Disney’s “Show White,” currently filming in London. So this seems more like a Disney issue than an Academy one.

The Academy had to cut back tickets by at least 800 seats this years thanks to COVID restrictions, which means a lot of regular ticket holders are out of luck. But the principal casts of the 10 nominated Best Pictures would seem like locks for first turn downs after all the actual nominees.

Still, Zegler, I’m sure would be welcome at Oscar viewing parties like Elton John’s AIDS Foundation if she were in town. And Showbiz411 would take her to Craig’s on Melrose for dinner. The flatbread there is delicious!

Hey, Rachel, I wasn’t invited to two “West Side Story” premieres in New York. I know you how feel! Only the Haus of Mouse knows for sure.
