Free Movie Tickets Buy Christian Crowd Funding Film “Sound of Freedom” Number 1 on Monday Box Office

0

If you give it away, they will come.

On Monday. the crowd funded Christian movie, “Sounds of Freedom,” finished at number 1 at the box office. It beat both “Insidious” and “Indiana Jones” with $4 million.

What it sounds like, though, is not freedom but a scam. You understand that the tickets are being funded by church groups that are buying the tickets at discounts and handing them out to anyone who asks. This is very important. No one is giving away tickets to big studio movies.

“Sounds” from Angel Studios, which is a crowd funding operation looking for donations and investments so they can make more of these movies. But I do think their box office numbers should be annotated so everyone understands they are not in actual competition with real studio movies.

Here’s the link to my original story explaining all this.

Meanwhile, “Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One” opens Wednesday. “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie,” being cross promoted, come next Thursday.

Trailer: If “Barbie” Doesn’t Work Out, Timothy Chalamet as Willy “Wonka” Will Save Warner Bros. This Christmas

0

The trailer for “Wonka” is so good you barely need to see the movie.

But the remake of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” coming this fall from Warner Bros. looks like it’s going to be HUGE.

Timothy Chalamet plays the Gene Wilder role, and this will be his franchise. Hugh Grant steals the trailer (wait til you see). They’ll get three movies out of this IP. Paul King, who directed the charming “Paddington,” is helming. The trailer doesn’t indicate it but there’s music, also. Chalamet will sing “Pure Imagination.” He’s going to rocket to the top.

Nice because now Timmy will eat chocolate instead of people, as he did in “Bones and All.”

Report: Emmy Noms Tomorrow, But Awards Show Will Move to November or January If SAG Strikes

0

Variety is reporting that the Emmy Awards will likely be delayed if SAG goes on strike tomorrow night.

Fox is this year’s broadcaster. The show could be in November, or all the way on January 21st. The first date makes the most sense as the TV season will be in full swing. If they wait to until January, a lot of things will have transpired.

In the case of some shows, they’re already behind a season with the Emmy calendar. This would really be weird.

Emmy nominations are announced tomorrow morning at 11:30am Eastern. “Succession” will be the big leader, but we’ll see plenty of nods for “The Bear,” “Mrs. Maisel,” “Poker Face,” “Only Murders in the Building,” plus a ton of shows from Neflix, Amazon, and Apple.

I’ll be posting the nominees in real time. Come back tomorrow!

Song of the Summer and All of 2023: Miley Cyrus’s “Flowers” Has Sold Equivalent of Stunning 5 Million Copies

0

Just so you know, there is a Song of the Summer, and all of 2023.

Miley Cyrus’s “Flowers,” written by Gregory Aldae Hein and Michael Pollack, has been a the top of every chart for a solid six months.

The catchy hit — a throwback to real songs — has sold — are you ready? — 4.9 million copies. It’s almost all from streaming. How many streams? According to Lumimate, 765 million. Fans are just playing it over and over again.

The album it’s from, “Endless Summer Vacation,” has sold a very healthy 780,000 copies. But “Flowers” is so massive there’s really been no follow up single. (I don’t know why, there were plenty of good choices.) “Flowers” is such an overwhelming success that if it weren’t Miley being a superstar already, the song would be a one hit wonder (like “Call Me Maybe”).

So yes, Taylor Swift is the album queen. But Miley’s going to win Song and Record of the Year at the Grammys. If she doesn’t there will be a congressional investigation.

Viva “Flowers”! It just keeps growing.

As Crippling Hollywood Strike Looms, SAG Union Chief Fran Drescher Parties in Italy with Kim Kardashian

0

It may be the picture of the year: SAG AFTRA union president actress Fran Drescher living it up in Italy with the dreaded Kim Kardashian.

There is outrage all over the press and social media because SAG AFTRA may go on strike tomorrow night, turning a lot of lives inside out.

Kardashian, a despicable person on so many levels, has been thumbing her nose at the Writers Guild strike for the last almost three months. She’s got an ‘acting” job in Ryan Murphy’s “American Horror Story” TV series, which is still filming despite efforts by the union to shut it down.

The one time Mrs. Kanye West arrives on the set in a chauffeur driven Escalade with windows blackened out drives right though the picket line. Her “let ’em eat cake” attitude is loathed.

Now she’s infected Drescher. The union says “The Nanny” star was scheduled to be in Italy for a Dolce and Gabbana promotion., so it’s okay with them. But I doubt it’s okay with 160,000 SAG members who are terrified of being without pay starting Wednesday — not to mention the WGA, and all the waves of people who will be affected by a strike. While Nanny Fine and Ms. Sex Tape were eating gelato, Variety reports that SAG execs got on the phone yesterday with all the publicists in town explaining to them how soon they will be cut off from incomes.

Fran should know the Kardashians are a flesh eating illness that will destroy you– just look at their wake. No one gets out alive, except them.

Madonna Goes from Unresponsive to Back from Her Health Scare: Tour Will Now Start this Fall in Europe

0

Two weeks ago, Madonna was found “unresponsive” at home, was rushed to the ICU, maybe given a Narcan shot, and brought back to life from a scary infection.

But you can’t keep Madonna down! She’s back! Someone told Page Six they saw the Material Mom walking in her neighborhood on Sunday. Then yesterday she put a statement up on Instagram. She’s feeling better and working her to a recovery. Good news!

Madonna says her US tour starting next week has been pushed to next year. She plans on starting the tour in Europe this fall. Will she scale it back? We’ll see. She’s got a lot of spunk!

PS Remember every Madonna tour has its own inherent drama! Now, Diane Sawyer and Oprah will fight to get the first interview with her!

Tom Cruise Is So Into Playing Ethan Hunt He Brought His Own Stealth Security Team of 19 to “Mission Impossible” Premiere

0

Since Tom Cruise is between “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning” movies he’s definitely still playing Ethan Hunt in his mind.

Last night at the glitzy New York premiere of Part One, Cruise brought along his security team — 19, in all — on the top of regular studio muscle at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

The 19 member squad — who were quite stealth — added to a very chill atmosphere, the so the premiere ran like clockwork.

Among the celebs we ran int were Gayle King, Sherri Shepherd, and Michael “General Zod” Shannon. I’m pretty sure I saw Kenan Thompson in the audience, wearing dark sunglasses, plus David Faber from CNBC. Viacom owner Shari Redstone was there and took pictures with Tom– after all, she’s paying for all of this. Other execs came in from Los Angeles, too. I also got to meet Jon Watts, who directed the three Tom Holland “Spider Man” movies, all blockbusters. I asked him, “What happens now that no one remembers Peter Parker?” He replied, drolly, “That’s someone else’s problem now!” (His next film is called “Wolves” with Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and Amy Ryan.)

There were also crowds of “influencers,” the newest genre of guest de rigeur at any film opening. These are droves of people you’ve never seen before all of whom have lots of “followers” on social media. They get the word out. (I sat with a really nice group of them.)

On stage before the screening, Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie lavished praise on the assembled members of their cast including including Rebecca Ferguson, Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Mariela Garriga, and Vanessa Kirby. The guys were Cary Elwes, Simon Pegg, Esai Morales, Shea Wigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, and Henry Czerny. Only Ving Rhames was missing, probably exhausted from doing premieres around the world. (Spoiler: one of them may not make it all the way through the movie.)

Cruise and McQuarrie — who they all called “McQ” — have developed an easy banter introducing the movie and the actors, and reminiscing about the production. They want to make sure you know they had a good time, even though COVID caused a lot of interruptions. As far as Cruise doing all these death defying stunts in the movie: Tom said to McQ, “You tried to kill me!” The director laughed and shot back, “I never tried to kill you!”

“Dead Reckoning Part One” hits theaters on Wednesday, and will definitely set box office records.

Broadway: “Merrily We Roll Along” Revival Hasn’t Opened Yet But It’s Already Extending Run by 2 Months

0

Every show hopes for this.

The revival of “Merrily We Roll Along” starring Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff, and Lindsay Mendez is such a hit, it’s already booked an extension.

“Merrily” was supposed to run from September through January. But it’s all sold out, and people want more! So now the Stephen Sondheim musical will play through March 24, 2024. My guess is they may even stick around longer, since the show is a likely Tony winner next June.

The irony of course is that the original production in 1981 was a huge flop. That show, which included Lonny Prince, Jason Alexander, Giancarlo Esposito, and Daisy Prince, played for just two weeks after 44 previews. It was ahead of its time! But this production gained raves — with people crying — when it was at the New York Theater Workshop last fall. People were battling to get in. And now, everyone will be very merry!

Ringo Starr Brings the Peace and Love for His 83rd Birthday, Forever Beatle Remains Eternally Young

0

Peace and Love were in abundance at a Beverly Hills park on Friday as Sir Ringo Starr, forever a Beatle, hosted his 15th annual birthday celebration.  Ringo is now an age defying looking 83!

Sir Ringo led his pals and lucky onlookers to chant Peace And Love, right at noon.  Ringo was clad in a blue camouflage jacket and had his equally youthful looking wife actress Barbara Bach, 75 at his side along with her sister Marjorie Bach and her husband, Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh.

Ringo was asked how he remains fit at the age of 83 to which he responded:  “I exercise and diet and my overall health is good.”  He then added, “It’s really all about and comes down to promoting peace and love. That is how it works and it is still working out for me today.”

The really named Richard Starkey Ringo gpes backon tour September 15th with his All Starr Band including Edgar Winter and Steve Lukather of Toto.  He talked to the press about the new and final Beatles single coming out later in the year; a John Lennon demo from the 70s that has been cleaned u vocally, with George Harrison guitar solo, and Ringo and Paul adding new vocals and instruments.

“It’s not down to AI,” Starr said. “It’s not like we’re pretending anything. That is actually John’s voice, Paul’s voice and bass playing, George on rhythm guitar and me on drums. And the two things that are new are Paul’s bass and me on drums. I really worked at it just months ago here. And it works. It’s a beautiful song. You know, for all the madness going on around it, it’s still a beautiful track. And it is our last track.”  The song is called “Now and Then,” and it’s unclear if some kind of album is attached to it– rarities maybe.

Joe Walsh also refuted the news that The Eagles latest tour is their last.  “We’re gonna play till we can’t, or play till nobody comes, whichever comes first. But they’re still coming, so why stop? That’s the only thing we know how to do.” He may be in denial since the band has announced its Farewell Tour ending in 2025.

A band that included guitarist Blake Mills, King Tuff and legendary drummer Jim Keltner, played Ringo’s hits like “Photograph,” “Don’t Pass Me By,” “It Don’t Come Easy,” and “Back Off Boogaloo,” while Ringo and Barbara boogied from the front row. Ringo, after he cut his cake, told the crowd that, “I’ve got another hundred years in me!”  Notables included Diane Warren, Lyle Lovett, Richard Mar and his wife Daisy Fuentes, Ed Begley Jr, Benmont Tench, Fred Armisen, and famed Carole King bassist Leland Sklar.

Box Office: “Indiana Jones” Pushed to Second Place by Horror Film But Harrison Ford Isn’t Giving Up, Films Warm Message to Fans

0

Harrison Ford isn’t throwing in the towel.

Even though “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” fell 58% this weekend, to second place, the star who’s played him for 40 years issued a warm message to fans on social media this weekend. You can see it below.

“DoD” isn’t a bomb but it’s not what was hoped for. It has around $250 million in worldwide sales so far, but it’s struggling to stay afloat. In years to come it may pay off on streaming and DVD, TV sales, too as it joins the four other films. One day someone will be watching it and say, “Hey, that was great.” But for now, it’s a wash.

“DoD” lost its top spot to “Insidious: The Red Door,” which made $32 million If you like horror films, especially from Blumhouse, that’s a great success. Of the films, “DoD” will probably last longer. But right now, that doesn’t matter.

Elsewhere, more free tickets– thousands – pushed “Sound of Freedom” to nearly $40 million total. This is absurd, of course. Religious organizations are paying for their followers to see the movie, so they’re getting in free. I signed u for a free ticket to see how this works. It took a few days to get a response, but if I want to cash it in, I can. (I won’t.) The whole enterprise has cult like markings and its box office report should reflect that.
