“The Artist” Wins 7 British Academy Awards

0

There’s no such thing as a “done deal” but “The Artist” looks like it’s headed to a big Oscar night on February 26th. Over the weekend the Michel Hazanavicius directed silent film picked up 7 BAFTA awards from the British Film Academy. The film won Best Picture, Actor, and Director, plus Original Screenplay and Score. There was nothing, however, for Uggie, and nothing for Berenice Bejo, who’s having the unfortunate experience of watching everyone else from “The Artist” win awards while she loses to Octavia Spencer from “The Help” for Best Supporting Actress. Not to take away from Spencer, but Bejo is a marvel as Peppy Miller, the plucky Hollywood ingenue who becomes a superstar.

Best Actress went to Meryl Streep for “The Iron Lady.” This was a pretty controversial choice in England considering Streep played Margaret Thatcher in a way that surprised the Brits. But I do think that Streep is on target now for the Oscar over Viola Davis in “The Help.” Anything could change, but Streep’s body of work and her superlative performance in this film especially should lead to a win. Davis has a lot of of Oscars, Tonys, and Emmys in her future, of that there is no doubt.

As for “The Artist,” the real shock is that Jean DuJardin has picked up this momentum for Best Actor. He’s winning contests against Brad Pitt and George Clooney. I can’t imagine what those two guys must be thinking. They’ve each done their best work ever in “Moneyball” and “The Descendants.” “The Artist” came out of left field, a total shock. But Du Jardin is so appealing and charming in “The Artist,” and he’s obviously appealing to voters looking for someone new to choose from.

As Whitney Lies in State, the Party Goes On

0
The Clive Davis party was called for 6:45 in the ballroom of the Beverly Hilton. On the fourth floor, Whitney Houston was dead, and her floor was sealed off by police. Celebrities began arriving, but some of them — like Mary J. Blige– didn’t actually make it until well after 10pm. There was confusion about walking the red carpet, doing press, what to say or wear. Clive Davis came in through a back door, did no press, and took a room above the ballroom where he tried to compose himself–and a speech. He was visited by just a couple of close friends–like Sean Diddy Combs and songwriter Diane Warren. Combs wound up being a godsend. His speech at the start of the party was so disarmingly eloquent that it saved the night. It was magnificent.

The dinner guests–many of whom were confused, unhappy, but talked about Whitney and tried to make sense of the whole thing–included Quincy Jones–bereft, he just sat down at his table and received visitors. “I went through this with Ray Charles, with Michael Jackson, and now this with Whitney.” He just shook his head. At almost 80, he’s seen everything. He talked to Gayle King for a while. Valerie Simpson, whose husband Nik Ashford died last year, and who wrote “I’m Every Woman”–a big hit for Whitney–was beside herself. This was her first real public outing. It didn’t help that later when Diana Ross showboated onto the floor to sing another Ashford-Simpson hit, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”–she acknowledged neither Houston nor Simpson.
Elsewhere: Gladys Knight, the legend, who left early. A group of 70s singer songwriters who’d seen drugs take their friends–Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, all superstars, sat together. Todd Rundgren made a rare appearance. There were Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Phil Ramone, Toni Braxton, Diana Krall and Elvis Costello, Carole King. There was a Hollywood table: Jane Fonda and Richard Perry, Peter Fonda, Joan Collins and Jackie Collins. Paul Shaffer brought his 18 year old daughter Victoria.

Mostly, people talked about Clive Davis, how he’d been a father figure to Whitney, and their concern for him. Everyone in the music business knows what Clive–who has four children and six grandchildren–did for Whitney. Nothing worked. When she improved, he was encouraged. When he got negative reports, he was devastated, like a parent who couldn’t come up with a solution. This went on and on for years.

More guests: Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, the famous folk and pop singer Donovan, cast members from “Glee,” singer Anthony Hamilton, Patti Austin, Nigel Lythgoe, India.Arie, Vivi Nevo, Ron Burkle. Sean Parker, of Facebook and Napster fame. Will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas, Dr. Dre, George Schlatter, the legendary producer of “Laugh In.” And Clive loyalists like Nikki Haskell, Barbara Davis, Arnold Stiefel (newly svelte), Larry King, Denise Rich, David Foster, Penny Marshall, Kathy Griffin. They all “knew”–they’ve followed the stories for years.

And more: a decidedly low profile Brett Ratner, Princess Eugenie of the UK (Fergie’s daughter), Quinton Aaron from “The Blind Side.” Execs from every record company. And so on.

Tony Bennett opened the show with a somber “How Do You Keep the Music Playing?” Diana Krall, worried about the whole event, followed with a jazz anthem. The Kinks’ Ray Davies kicked up the energy with a medley of his hits accompanied by Elvis Costello and Jackson Browne. I thought Ray did the classiest thing of the night. He’d been rehearsing his song “Days” for three days.

But instead of waiting to sing it in full with Costello, he came out on stage and sang just the first verse a capella, spur of the moment. It was so touching and completely right: “Thank you for the days/Those endless days, those sacred days you gave me/I’m thinking of the days/I won’t forget a single day, believe me/I bless the light/I bless the light/I bless the light that lights on you believe me/And though you’re gone/You’re with me every single day/ Believe me.”

Exclusive Notes from Clive Davis Grammy Party

6

We also have reports at www.forbes.com. But our LEAH SYDNEY took notes as the Grammy party progressed last with a heavy heart.

There was a small red carpet..I did not see anyone do it.  At the Beverly Hilton where she died, beyond crowded and mayhem in the lobby.  Apparently around at 11:30 as the party was going on, her body was removed from the hotel. When I got there. Whitney was not supposed to sing at this party-but she was supposed to attend.  Menu..green salad-appetizer-bread on table.  Chicken stuffed..asparagus and tomatoes and scalloped potatoes. I saw that Kim Kardashian  and Serena Williams each had red wine with their were meals.  Chocolate mousse cake for desert.

Kathy Griffin was excited to meet Carole King, told her how much she loved her…then Jane Fonda came into it-making it a trio.  Kathy seemed a bit overwhelmed and was quiet.  This being Hollywood, everyone was schmoozing.  Rita Wilson went up to Gladys Knight, hugged her and told her what a true fan she was of her, while Tom Hanks beamed , then he did the same thing.  Quincy was at the table, stood up and said, “I love you two,” to which Tom laughed loudly.  Richard Branson chatting with Quincy.  Sean Puffy Combs being lovely to everyone..people just being gentle with each other.

At 9:45  Clive Davis, looked distraught as he went on the stage.   The room became eerily quiet.  The whole night was imbued from the beginning with sadness. Clive said, “I was devastated, for our beloved Whitney, I have a heavy heart and am personally devastated by the loss of someone who meant so much to me.  She was so full of life and looking forward to tonight.  She loved this night that celebrates music.  My heart goes out to her daughter , mother and family.  I cherished her spirit and she was a beautiful person. She graced the stage with her regal presence. She had talent beyond compare.  She would have wanted the music to go on and her family asked that it does.”  Then Clive asked for a moment of silence  for about a minute, which was done.  “I dedicate this night to Whitney Houston.  Now let the music begin!”

Tony Bennett came on stage and immediate asked every “man and woman in this audience to please pressure the government to legalize drugs like they do in Amsterdam. It’s the sane thing to do.  First it was Michael Jackson, then Amy Winehouse, now the magnificent Whitney Houston.  I’d like every person in this room to campaign to legalize drugs.  No one will be hiding in or sneaking around corners to get it.  Gangsters won’t be selling it under a table.  They go to a doctor to get it and also get the treatment they need.  We need sanity with this.” Bennett then said, “This is a song Frank Sinatra asked me to sing,” Bennett told the crowd. “I’d like to dedicate it to Whitney. When I first heard her, I called Clive Davis and said, ‘You finally found the greatest singer I’ve ever heard in my life.'”  After he sang, he put his arms up in the air, looked up to the ceiling and shouted “Whitney!”  Very emotional he was.  The song was Alan and Marilyn Bergman’s “How Do You Keep the Music Playing?”

Clive played clips from past shows while they changed bands for each singer.  He also introduced many of the VIPS in the audience.

Alicia Keys then played next. Of all the performers, she was the most heartfelt, sad, reflective and celebrating Whitney. She hit all the right notes, she was the most appropriate.  The best of them all. As she tinkled the piano, she mused, “Beautiful energy in this room.  So special.  So many things. You feel sad when you lost someone you love.  You think back on how they’ve touched your life.  Whitney was my sister.  This incredible beautiful woman. ‘  She then went on to imitate her singing, “I Want to Dance With Somebody.”  Alicia continued, “ She was my barometer on what I hoped and wished for.  Then I met her for the first time and she became my sister.  Who would have thought? She came to visit me in some city, she knew I was pregnant before I told anybody.  She helped my dreams come true.  Ten years ago I was on the stage at Clive’s party for the first time. It’s a blessing to be here and to feel all this love.  We have got to remember to love each other because nothing else matters..  Just love somebody, that’s what Whitney was all about.”   Alicia then went on to play a bit of Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind”…leading into her hit song “Empire State of Mind.” She then said, “Whitney is over my shoulder now saying, come on get with it, “  Then Alicia sang “No One.”

The Grammy head Neil Portnow then came out and said, “you could tell, even back then, that Whitney would become the star of all stars.”

Then Sean Puffy Combs gave a heartfelt tribute to her, saying, “we see each other here and give each other the respect ..because as you can see, tomorrow is not promised.  Clive is one of the most kindest and beautiful people I know.  Whenever you saw Whitney, she always hit you with that beautiful smile and energy, she gave you a Grandma hug..with real love.  She had a natural positive spirit.  If we truly believe in God then we should celebrate her life tonight.. Simply put, she had the greatest voice in the world. She was a gift from God .  If it wasn’t for Clive, we might never have known this miracle.  Today we just didn’t lose an artist, we lost an angel.  She always performed 5000 percent.  She wasn’t a hater, but a congratulator.  When I found out,  I went into a state of shock. Clive always stood by her side.  Even in her darkest hour.  We honor her.  So lets turn this mood around, and Clive is probably one of the few people in this world who could throw a party better than me.  This is the hottest ticket in town, and you are one of the chosen tonight, Lets give her the respect she deserves.  She wouldn’t want us to be somber. There will be time for that.  So a rule of Clive’s party-no industry stiffness allowed! “

Then Sean made everyone stand for Clive.  Clive then came back and introduced Ray Davies from the Kinks.  Ray first sang, “All Day and All of the Night.” Then Jackson Browne and Elvis Costello joined him for “Days.”. When Ray sang “Lola,” everyone did L-0-l-a..LOLA.   He finished with “You Really Got Me.”

Sean Combs sat at the table at the end ..So Sean first, then Brittney’s table, then Kim /Serena’s, LA Reid.

Miranda Lambert then came, talked about Whitney, sang The House that Built Me, as hubby The Voice’s Blake Shelton, taped her from audience.

Jane Fonda then gave an award to Richard Branson…he acknowledged Whitney.  Branson then told the crowd “most people are circumcised when they are born.  I was at 21.  The next day I watched Barberella.  I almost split my stitches.”  To uproarious laughter from the crowd.

Then Clive came back, told the crowd that “Whitney and I just spent this past Tuesday together at my home here,”  Clive’s home being the Beverly Hills Hotel-where he’s been staying for decades. Then he introduced Wiz Khalifa.

Then  Pitbull with Ne Yo.

At the end Jaime Foxx, went into the crowd, singing “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,”  went to Diana Ross’s table.  She got up, started to sing, then went to a chair , went up on that in front of Alicia, then on stage.  The night ended with her singing that, and Clive coming out-kissing her and saying good night everybody.  She didn’t acknowledge Whitney.

A note from RF: Had the tragedy not occurred, this would have been considered one of the greatest parties and shows in Grammy history. The fact that it came off after all was some kind of miracle. It was simply too late to cancel it.

Exclusive: Whitney Was “Fine” and in “Great Mood”: Musical Director

10

EXCLUSIVE Ricky Minor, Whitney Houston’s longtime musical director, tells me that he met with her on Thursday morning here at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. “She’d just been swimming. It was before 9am. She loves to swim. She had wet hair and she was getting it all over me.” Minor was getting ready to rehearse Brandy and Monica for a medley of Supremes songs for Clive Davis’s dinner–being held now, only three hours after Whitney’s tragic death. “She stayed, gave the girls advice. She was singing along from the theater. She said, Can I have a mike? And I said No, this is their show,” Minor said, remembering that he was joking. He is in shock he says. While we spoke, another member of the Davis team came along and said “I spoke to her yesterday. She was fine.” Minor tells me Whitney showed him her athletic arms from swimming, and was “very proud” of her athletic condition. “She said she was very excited about producing Sparkle and wanted to produce more films. It’s unbelievable.”

Whitney Houston Dies, Grammy Party Now Memorial

20

The tragedy of Whitney Houston’s death is huge. But the timing is awful, too. Suddenly, the annual pre Grammy dinner given by her mentor Clive Davis — which she was scheduled to attend– is set to become a memorial. It’s too late to cancel the 800 plus person dinner here at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. So somberly the theme of the evening will be to celebrate Houston’s life. This has to be extremely painful for Davis, who has counseled Whitney and stood by her through thick and thin. As recently as last year Davis guided Houston back into rehab with her personal counselor and took extreme care to make sure she was alright. Before she started filming “Sparkle” late last fall she reassured him she was ok. And my sources from the movie set swore to me that Houston was in fine shape. Her death is immeasurably sad for her daughter Bobbi Kristina, her mother Cissy, sister in law and manager Pat Houston and the rest of their family. But for Davis it’s a stunning blow.

Exclusive: Eddie Izzard’s Fake McCartney Bio Speech

19

Exclusive: Here’s the full text of Eddie Izzard’s running commentary about Paul McCartney during last night’s MusiCares show. It was a lot more interesting than the real story, which everyone knows by heart. I do think this is the beginning of fake toasts and tributes. (To be fair, Mike Nichols did this kind of thing once for Warren Beatty and it was also hilarious.) Brilliant!

Paul McCartney – The Early Years

Paul McCartney was born in June the something, 1962 in the city of Liverpool in the country of Ireland. A lot of English people had immigrated to Ireland over the years, so although it was an Irish city, a lot of people thought of it as an English city. This caused a lot of tension IN the city, especially over the very working class game of football, which in America you call – Scuba Diving. Some people supported the catholic Celtic team and some supported the protestant Rangers team – that’s just how it was. There was often violence involved with games, which in America you call – War in Europe. Paul’s father was Jacques Cousteau, the famous fisherman, who changed the family name to McCartney after his boat hit a cart. Everyone made jokes and the name stuck. Jacques Cousteau attempted to keep Paul away from the local sectarian violence and in 1962 he encouraged him to wear a snorkel and flippers to school. This didn’t work as both Catholic and Protestant school kids would poke fun at Paul shouting “why are you wearing a snorkel?” This has stayed with Paul his whole life and even today he never wears a snorkel except when swimming. Paul’s mother was Katherine Hepburn, the famous American actress.  Katherine had left America in the 50’s when she married Jacques Cousteau and together they made some classic films – Adam’s Rib, Woman of the Year, Guess Who’s coming to Dinner and it’s sequels – Guess who’s Coming to Supper and Guess who’s Coming to Breakfast, which were all filmed in Liverpool, Scotland in 1962. Paul spent his early childhood on fishing boats with his mother and father, learning to catch all manner of fish – Bream, Cod, Dover Sole, Pike and Hammer Head Sharks were part of his daily do. Winston Churchill, who was a family friend and brilliant deep sea diver, bought Paul his first fishing rod, but Paul was already tiring of fish because they’re not very interesting and crap on the guitar. Paul found that by holding his fishing rod in a particular way, he could play fishing rod air guitar, which impressed Winston Churchill a lot. Some say that watching Paul McCartney play air guitar on a fishing rod in 1962, encouraged Winston Churchill to record “Ferry across the Mersey”, which was a big hit in the UK and America for Churchill & The Pacemakers. But with time on his hands, Paul found that with a little imagination, he could re-wire his finishing rod and make it into a guitar, which he did in 1962. This he decided to play left handed not because he was left handed, but because he knew that everyone would look at him and go “wass-er … what’s the … hey mate, your guitar’s on back to front”. But in a very short time, Paul McCartney was very good on the guitar and he decided to join a band because he felt being a musician was much sexier than being a fisherman. His feelings have been proved by a recent CNN poll which had a comfortable majority of 53% of people saying that being a musician was more sexy and only 47% saying being a fisherman is more sexy.

Paul McCartney – The Beatles Years

If you’re keeping up, then you’ll realise that the year is now – 1962. That year, Jacques Cousteau and Katherine Hepburn split up and so Paul McCartney was brought up by Winston Churchill and Brigitte Bardot instead. Paul was therefore fluent in not only English, but also in German. He was by now a virtuoso on his left handed guitar and also could sing archipelago with a lot of his Fisherman Friends. By 1962,  Winston Churchill  was running a pub in Hamburg, Germany – which as you probably all know, is only 5 miles from Liverpool, the Russian city. The Beatles at this point were a seven man group, John Lennon on guitar, George Harrison on lead guitar, Stu Sutcliffe on bass, Pete Best on drums, Mohammed Ali on flute and Charles de Gaulle on xylophone. So when the Beatles turned up in Hamburg, Paul McCartney could not only translate from the German, but also he could sit in on guitar, such as when Charles De Gaulle was absent due to his torrid affair with Lenny Riefenstahl, the same infamous Lenny who worked with Homer at the Nuclear Plant. Eventually John Lenin, son of the same Lenin that had led the Russian revolution in 1917, got pissed off with Charles De Gaulle, who played an indifferent xylophone anyway, always faced the back and could only make a plinky, plinky, plinky noise with his instrument. So just like that, in 1962, Charles de Gaulle was out of the Beatles and Paul McCartney was in – initially on the xylophone, which he had to play upside down as he was left handed. Eventually Paul said “stuff this for a game of soldiers” and quick as a flash, Stu Sutcliffe was out of the band as well, due to his torrid affair with Charles de Gaulle, who ran the Quickie Mart shop that he had bought from Apu. Events were moving fast as Ringo Starr swopped drumming roles with Pete Best and suddenly there it was – The Beatles were the Beatles. John, Paul, George & Ringo – with Mohammed Ali on flute. The lads were cool with having Mohammed Ali in the Beatles but Mohammed was always taking time off to be in fighting contests where two large men attempted to beat the shit out of each other. They mutually agreed to split in August 1962 and Mohammed Ali went off and started his own band – Jethro Tull. Whilst in the Beatles, Paul McCartney went on to form a powerful writing partnership with John Lenin and together they wrote such famous songs as Help, Hard Days Night, Strawberry Fields, Lady Madonna, All you Need is Love, Blowing’ In the Wind, Hotel California, Whole Lotta Love and The Soviet national anthem. On the 7th February 1962 the Beatles finally landed in America and the reaction was huge. They went on the Ed Sullivan show and were watched by  seven trillion people, way more than the population of the world. When people said how can this be, they discovered that people from other planets were watching as well.

Paul McCartney – After the Beatles

During the Let it Be album, things were rather strained between the four Beatles, but the mood was lightened up when Mohammed Ali came back in to play flute with them on some tracks, as in – Why Don’t We Do It In The Road, which was sucked back into the White Album. But then, in September 1962 , the Beatles finally split up and Paul McCartney went off to start his own band. The first band he set up was called The Sex Pistols, but after disagreements with other band members  – Jonathan Rotten and Sidney Viscous – he decided to set up another band called Ian Dury and the Blockheads. Ian Dury and The Blockheads already existed, so that was another non-starter. Then one day he decided to throw a lot of  make up on and start singing as a character he called Boy George. But George Harrison phoned him and pointed out his name wasn’t George, so he chucked that in too. Then he decided to set up the German band Kraftwerk, which, if you don’t happen to speak the language, is German for – Scuba Diving. But by this time his German was rusty and so was his xylophone, so he decided to knock that on the head. Then, in late 1962, Fidel Castro said to Paul : “Why don’t you start a band named after part of a bird?” Paul liked the idea, but was not keen on Fidel’s early suggestions of naming the band ‘Legs’ or ‘Beaks’. Instead, he decided to call it ‘Wings’ and Fidel said: “Oh yeah, birds do have wings don’t they – but all birds in Cuba are flightless birds, so I didn’t think of that”. Paul said: “Where are you going with this?” Fidel replied “Well, I still like the idea of a band called ‘Beaks'”. “Well why don’t you go and start a fucking band called ‘Beaks’ then. I’ll start a band called ‘Wings’ and we’ll see who is the most successful”, said Paul. So that is how it happened, and all through the rest of 1962 the two groups fought a battle of the bands. Fidel’s band broke into the charts first with a bizarre cover of Nancy Sinatra’s ‘These Boots are made for Walking’ called ‘These Beaks are Made for Talking’. But eventually Fidel gave up singing and just concentrated on his spoken word tours, which though well attended, sold minimal merchandise.

Paul McCartney – What he did in the rest of 1962

Wings had had many hits and had played many huge stadiums, but the battle of the bands with ‘Beaks’ had made Paul McCartney stop and think: What was it all about? How could bands like ‘Beaks’ do so well? How come he now spoke German and also – Who the bloody hell was writing this biography? This wasn’t his life. Some bastard was just going on and on – writing for some Grammy programme, while large men were pushing pianos around a stage. This guy’s making up rubbish, right there in the middle of a show celebrating his life. And the trouble was – this was America. Americans could well believe this shit and they’ll write it in history books: How Paul McCartney played the Xylophone upside down ‘cos he was left handed and how Mohammed Ali played flute with the Beatles and how every single thing happening in nineteen bloody sixty too! Oh my god! This is awful. This is all Izzard’s fault. He’s just making up a completely crazy life for me out of his stupid head. Crap. But what can I do? I asked him to come on and do the show. But then he whined: “But Paul, I can’t do it. These three minute segments are not really my thing”. And then I went and said: “Oh don’t worry, you’ll be fine. Just say anything”. And now he has. Bollocks, bollocks, bollocks, bollocks, bollock, bollocks, bollocks! What to do? I know I’ll kill Izzard. No I’ll get the Foo Fighters to kill him. I’ll tell Dave Grohl that Izzard is covered in Foo and that they should fight him, otherwise no one will believe that they are Foo Fighters if they don’t fight Foo and then maybe they’ll kill him and then everything will be fine and my real life will return. But what Sir Paul McCartney didn’t realise was that I had already talked to the Foo Fighters and I had persuaded Dave and the guys that I too would fight Foo with them, if they needed help – but not at weekends because I’m busy. My willingness to fight Foo must imply that I am empty of Foo and cannot be in league with Foo and therefore must not be fought. But it is true that Paul McCartney has become a knight in recent years. Americans may not know this, but this means that if the United Kingdom goes to war, Paul has to buy a horse and ride it towards our enemy’s nuclear weapons holding a lance. All knights of the realm have to do this, and our hope is that all these mounted men can kill all the people operating the nuclear weapons before they press their buttons. This plan is not idiot proof. It is not even sensible person proof – because horses can’t get down into the silos very easily. So what have we learned tonight about Paul McCartney. Well, not much from all the crap that I just said. But then again, these tribute events can just end up being – a long line of people, making loquacious salutations, that hang briefly in the air before they slide forgotten, into the landfill of speeches past.

I prefer to remember that someone once wrote – “What we do in life, echoes in eternity”. For Paul McCartney words are not needed, the music speaks for itself.

Grammy Update: McCartney Mesmerizes, Katy Perry Donates

0

Showbiz411 readers: we are still posting here all the time. But Showbiz411 has also sort of overnight hooked up with Forbes magazine’s Forbes.com. The stories are there, but it’s  like we’ve moved into a house before all the construction has finished. But keep checking www.forbes.com on a regular basis as Grammy weekend proceeds.

And basically, I’m just back from the first of three marathon nights of music: the Paul McCartney MusiCares Person of the Year dinner. I was backstage after the show with the survivors–the show was long, and the most complex I’ve ever seen in the football field sized LA Convention Center. Besides McCartney, who played a lot, peformers included Alicia Keys, Tony Bennett, Diana Krall and James Taylor, Coldplay, Allison Krauss, Neil Young with Crazy Horse (Paul and Neil are currently BFFs), Norah Jones, Katy Perry, Elvis Costello narrated a video, the Foo Fighters.

Eddie Izzard was the host–and this was funny–he was seated waaaay at the back of the room at my table. We were cracking up. And he was brilliant on stage. McCartney imported performers from the Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil show “Love”– acrobats and actors and trapeze artists were all over the room and even used a big rotating circular stage.

Katy Perry was so excited about singing “Hey Jude” that she pledged $250,000 from royalties from her latest single to MusiCares. I thought Neil Portnow was going to explode from happiness.

The food was vegetarian–I’m sorry, it was indigestible. Many people rejected it and just ate dessert and bread. I have to give credit to Paul McCartney–every event he’s featured it is vegan. No fish even! This is why he looks so great. But he doesn’t he sneak an In-and-Out Burger sometimes? Tony Bennett’s daughter mentioned she’d gone to Pink’s earlier in the day for a hot dog. It was cruel.

In the audience: Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Carole King, Jack Nicholson, Piers Morgan, Bonnie Raitt, Randy Jackson, Smokey Robinson and–yes–Yoko Ono at the main table. For a while she just sat and chatted with Paul’s son James.

Meanwhile, Clive Davis prepares for his big event tonight at the Beverly Hilton. He has Ray Davies and Diana Ross and tons more stars. How will he top this? Who knows: Maybe Barack Obama will duet with Al Green. Another long night of great music. When are those Grammy Awards anyway?

PS Thanks to John and Lee Eastman, and to producer Tommy LiPuma. They’re the guys behind the Wizard’s curtain.

These Grammys May Be the Best of All Time

0

Forget the nominees. This year, the Grammys are finally doing it right. It’s a celebration of the world of music. They’ve just announced a Beach Boys reunion with Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and Mike Love. Add to that performances from Paul McCartney, and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. That would be enough. Dayenu! But of course Adele is performing, and so are hot new groups like Foster the People, The Civil Wars, and (less newish) Maroon 5. Chris Brown is going to be incredible — it’s time to move on from his troubled past. Diana Ross, who gets a Lifetime Achievement Award on Saturday night, is a presenter. Carrie Underwood and Tony Bennett are performing together. The show sounds like it’s going to take five hours. But it will be worth it. There’s a rumor that Lady Gaga is opening the show. No word yet on Van Halen. LL Cool J is hosting. All they’re missing is Lana del Rey (just kidding!)

Brangelina Charity A Plus: $1 Mil to Haiti, Plus Brad Donated to New Orleans Hero’s Funeral

1

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie continue to put their money where their mouths are when it comes to charity. Their Jolie Pitt Foundation’s 2010 tax filing just became available. Of the over $2.3 million they gave away in 2010, $1 million went to Doctors without Borders treating patients in Haiti. But sometimes it’s the little things that count, too. Brad paid $3,000 toward a funeral for beloved New Orleans civic leader and his friend, Pamela Dashiell, who died unexpectedly at age 61 in December 2009. Dashiell had been a leader in New Orleans’s famous Lower 9th Ward where the most damage occurred from Hurricane Katrina. Big donation are wonderful, but something like that kind of breaks your heart.

The Jolie Pitt Foundation is also kind of a template for smart giving. For example, under a micro financing plan they loaned 201 needy Cambodians $21,000 for small businesses to purchase crop seeds and agricultural tools– a similar program to Kiva.org. All the money has been paid back.

Their largest expenditures went to SOS Childrens Villages ($250,000) and to other children’s causes around the world. But they also donated $200,000 to Drury University in Springfield, Missouri –Brad’s hometown– and $15,000 to Operation Blankets of Love in Granada Hills, California–they help rescue pets and abandoned animals.

The foundation noted that even though they have a fair market value of over $6 million, 2010 was a year of “contraction,” leading to fewer donations. (“Tree of Life” and “In the Land of Blood and Honey” weren’t exactly blockbusters.) Still they noted that their donations repesented 25% of their assets–which is highly generous.

Alana Stewart Sets the Record Straight on HGH

1

The new Hollywood issue of Vanity Fair is out, and it’s a hit with almost everyone. One person who takes exception is beautiful and smart Alana Stewart, the loyal friend of the late Farrah Fawcett and ex-wife of both Rod Stewart and George Hamilton. Alana is a straight shooter, so she was a little surprised by her depiction in Vanity Fair about the use of youth-promising drug HGH. Alana set the record straight for me, and for you.

She writes: “I’m very unhappy with the way I was represented in the Vanity Fair article by Ned Zeman about HGH use in Hollywood. I agreed to do the interview with him as a favor to a friend that works for VF, and I was very clear that I had used HGH a short period of time some years ago because it was recommended by a health practitioner as a way of building back my energy and muscle strength after a bout with Epstein Barr. I told him that I did notice certain improvements in skin and hair as well as energy and strength, but that I had STOPPED using it because of the possibility of certain side effects, including potential cancer risk. Many doctors believe that HGH can potentially accelerate the growth of cancerous tumors.
Since I’m president of a foundation that supports cancer research and prevention, the last thing I want to do is been seen as a proponent of a substance I feel could be potentially dangerous.”

Alana assures me her HGH experience was short lived, and I believe her. There’s no such thing as a fountain of youth, even in Hollywood. But Alana–a newly minted grandmother, I might add–is the exception to the rule. She’s the real deal!

PS The rest of Ned Zeman’s article is fascinating nonetheless. It goes very well with Mark Seal’s excellent piece about Michael Jackson’s dermatologist, Arnie Klein. Hollywood is one crazy place, that’s all I can say. You’re constantly running into people who are facsimiles of themselves!
