Holly Hunter on “Mad Men”: “Without the Women, They’d Be Masturbators”

1

Last night in Hollywood: Women In Film held their Crystal + Lucy Awards at the Beverly Hilton.  Jenna Elfman deftly hosted the gala, which celebrated WIF’s 40th anniversary.  Jenna quipped, “Forty is the new kick ass.  We know that for actresses there still is work to do done.  We’re always cast as the love interest, now we have to compete with Matt Damon.”

WIF’s President, Producer Cathy Schulman relayed to the VIP crowd, which included Rose McGowan, Diane Warren, Diahann Carroll, Holly Robinson Peete, Elizabeth Rohm, Debra Messing, Stana Katic, Gail Berman Masters,  Ilene Kahn Power, Nancy Meyers. Dolores Robinson and more, the troubling statistics that still make it tough for women in Hollywood to get traction in the work place. “To boil it down, when the money and stakes increase, the opportunities for women decrease.”

The dynamic evening though was still all about lady power.  The event honored some of the industry’s powerful women and one man, no less then George Lucas.

Kathleen Kennedy, who now runs George Lucas’s empire, gave The Norma Zarky Humanitarian Award to Lucas.  George said that, “This award will have a prominent place in my house, it’s important to me.  My sisters took care of and trained me.  Then my daughters kept me going and keep me honest.  Now my soon to be wife Mellody (Financial Analyst Mellody Hobson) is definitely qualified to keep me in my place.  I like being surrounded by women; it’s more comfortable and less combative.”

George also revealed his daughter Katie, who was his date for the evening, is on her way to also becoming a filmmaker. “Katie is now following in my footsteps. She was inspired by Sofia Coppola who followed in her fathers.  I know it’s a lot harder for women, in the end I know you will win. ”

Sofia Coppola followed by accepting her Dorothy Arzner Directors Award.  Sofia said, “I’m proud to now have a body of work that expresses my point of view.  I hope this award will help other women express theirs.”

The witty Holly Hunter then presented the ladies of “Mad Men” their award.  The Oscar winner joked: “For six seasons the women of Mad Men have held their own against those combative advertising men.  They even got to drink through their pregnancies and take handfuls of estrogen.  Hell, without the women, those men would be nothing but masturbators.”

After the laughter died down, Elisabeth Moss, who plays Peggy, spoke for the group said that, “Mad Men has taken an unintentional political stance by simply treating women like human beings.  Our show is a truly special and spirited place in Hollywood. ” Jessica Pare, January Jones and Kiernan Shipka (Christina Hendricks was shooting a film) then thanked the women producers and crew members who make the show happen.  Moss ended their speech with, “We hope to continue to do you all proud.”

Hailee Steinfeld also received the Max Mara Face of the Future Award, Filmmaker Rachel Morrison got the Kodak Vision Award and finally Laura Linney was awarded the Crystal Award for Excellence in Film.  All in all, a wonderful night honoring some of Hollywood’s  most talented ladies.

Murdoch Divorce: Reported Everywhere Except Fox News and New York Post

0

UPDATE The divorce finally turned up in the Post as a prepared statement in Page Six on Friday morning. Meanwhile, the Hollywood Reporter, based on nothing, surmised Wendi Deng had been having an affair with the very married former British PM Tony Blair and actually asked for a comment on this idea from Murdoch’s office. They said it wasn’t true. Cherie Blair must be alternately laughing and throwing things. Foxnews.com is running an Associated Press item on the divorce. God knows, none of those cowards wants their byline on such a story.

The news of the Rupert Murdoch divorce is being reported everywhere on the web, from the New York Times to Gawker and Reuters. But the places you won’t be able to read it: Murdoch owned Fox News and the New York Post. As of 5:15pm, the two News Corp outlets have ignored the story. The Wall Street Journal finally caved in around 3:10pm with a full story that reads like a press release by Martin Peers: http://online.wsj.com/articl/SB10001424127887323734304578543420787038716.html?KEYWORDS=wendi.

The Murdoch divorce is the source of much texting, emailing and phone calls this afternoon. Wendi Murdoch was seen at the Cannes Film Festival without Murdoch. Before that she was a guest at Vanity Fair’s Tribeca Film Festival party in April, and came solo. The last pictures of the couple together on WireImage and Getty Images are from the Oscar weekend in February.

Spielberg, Lucas Predictions May Come True With Four Blockbusters Failing

0

Are Steven Spielberg and George Lucas prescient? Or have they seen the rest of the summer’s blockbuster releases? The duo said at a USC unveiling this week that Hollywood would go through a drastic change after three or four blockbusters, costing $250 million or more, blew up in studios’ faces. So far, “Jack and the Beanstalk” would be number 1, a total disaster. “After Earth” would be number 2 on the list. It’s a total dud.

“Man of Steel” would be number 3, with a teetering 60% approval rating of critics and frankly, a mind numbing plot. Coming directly after are “World War Z,” “White House Down,” and “The Lone Ranger.” So far the only blockbusters that worked were “Iron Man 3” and “Star Trek: Into the Darkness.” I’ve seen “World War Z” and it’s pretty good after producers reshot at least half the film. The result is that movie actually makes sense and has a third act.

But the others are all problematic. “The Lone Ranger,” especially looms large, especially after Disney’s “John Carter” did so badly last year.

One thing Lucas said in his comments that I have to take issue with. He and Spielberg talked about “Lincoln” almost going to HBO and Lucas’s “Red Tails” not doing well. I’m a huge Lucas fan but “Red Tails” was a terrible movie. And it lost all its movie because of that. So I don’t think “Red Tails” can be considered part of the conversation.

OMG! Rupert Murdoch Files for Divorce from Wendi Murdoch

4

The Murdochs are over. Rupert has filed for divorce from the lovely Wendi Deng. Amazing. He divorced his long time wife Anna to marry Wendi and had two girls with her. Wendi has gained tremendous popularity among the Hollywood crowd, making great friends of people like Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe. She produced a couple of films, as well, released through Fox Searchlight.

The fact that Rupert filed against Wendi is very telling. Will a big scandal erupt in the tabloids? How will the NY Post handle this? So far(1:30pm) they’re the only media outlet not reporting the divorce.

The Murdochs were married a total of 14 years. But there have been signs of stress. A few years ago, Rupert confessed during an interview that his daughters with Wendi would never have voting power in News Corp– that remains with his four children from his first marriage. That may have been the beginning of the end. Wendi is also often associated the projects considered liberal or progressive, many in direction contradiction to Rupert’s antiquated thinking.

And there’s the age difference. He’s 81. She’s a hot 44.

Exclusive: Hillary Clinton’s Book Ghost Writer Revealed–He Used to Write Speeches for Bill Clinton

67

Exclusive: Hillary Clinton is busily writing her new book, due from Simon & Schuster probably on June 1, 2014 according to an amazon.com entry. The book will cover her time as Secretary of State, no doubt including the events of Benghazi. The goal is to clear the air and have everything in place for her 2016 campaign for president. So who’s writing Hillary’s book? Or ghost-writing it? I can confirm that the person doing the heavy lifting is Edward “Ted” Widmer, 50, a former speechwriter for Bill Clinton with some heavy credentials. It’s still unclear how he will be billed.

Widmer, a Harvard grad who wrote for the Lampoon, has a long association with Brown University, where he’s held the post of Director of the John Carter Brown Library. Between 2001 and 2006, Widmer was inaugural director of the C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience at Washington widmerCollege, where, according to his bio, “he created numerous programs designed to enliven the teaching of American history and politics to diverse groups, ranging from Muslim college students in historically anti-American regions of the world to elementary students in under-financed public school districts of the eastern shore of Maryland.”

Yesterday I spoke with his wife, who assured me Widmer would call back after taking their son to the mall. He did not return the call or an email. Sources say that Widmer has conceded that Clinton–though she hasn’t said so directly– is “incredibly organized and planning her campaign.”

(NOTE: Widmer wrote to me late Thursday with this addition: “I have neither said that or anything like it to anyone, nor is it something I believe.”)

Widmer sounds like the right man for this job. The tone and revelations of Hillary’s book are going to be crucial to her campaign. Widmer should get a nice fee, too. Clinton’s last book fetched an $8 million advance. This one, say some reports, could be as high as $14 million–although in book publishing that would be ridiculous and impossible to earn back.

Jackson Family Values: Brothers Perform for AEG While Mother Sues Promoter

16

I have to laugh, this is too much. Katherine Jackson and Michael’s kids are suing AEG Live; the trial is proceeding in downtown Los Angeles. Meantime, Michael’s brothers– the Jacksons–including Jermaine– are set to perform on June 30 a few blocks away at the Staples Center. The show, billed as the BET Experience, features R. Kelly, who his own scandals, New Edition with the infamous Bobby Brown. They should change the name from the Unity Tour to the Infamy Tour.

So let me lay this out for you. The Jacksons will do their show in the Staples Center, the place where Michael Jackson was eulogized during a big memorial on July 7, 2009, as well as almost four years to the day of his death — June 25th–and then buried from.

On the stage of the Staples Center friends and family spoke. Michael’s coffin was front and center. AEG produced the memorial in 2009, and now the Jackson brothers  are working for the same promoter while they hope for a jury decision and big money. A Jackson lawyer said today that the boys have no choice. He said AEG is the only promoter in the world. I guess they haven’t heard of Live Nation. Or any of the other concert promoters.

You’d think Jermaine, Tito, Marlon and Jackie would think being at the Staples was too hard or too tacky. That working for AEG might look bad. But no such luck. Where there’s money, there’s a Jackson. And don’t stop til you get enough.

Exclusive: Stephen Moyer on True Blood New Season: “Funnier, Bloodier, Sexier, Dirtier”

0

The vampires were out in Hollywood for the “True Blood” sixth season after party premiere last night: Married stars Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer, Alexander Skarsgard, Joe Manganello, Ryan Kwanten and all the favorites are back. Our LEAH SYDNEY caught up with Paquin and Moyer, who now have real life twins Poppy and Charlie to deal with besides silver stakes, garlic and glistening abs. “True Blood” is back on HBO Sunday June 16th at 9pm.

Showbiz411: Tell me about the new season.
Anna: I’m always amazed that every season is still intense, with depth and  lushness of the scripts.  It’s always a challenge for me and I just love to do it.
Showbiz411: How about the kids?
Anna:  This is a dream job for me. I get to bring my children (the recently revealed names Poppy and Charlie) to the set with me. I realize how lucky and privileged I am to do that.  So I don’t take that for granted.
Showbiz411: What’s up next for you?
Anna: Just being a mom.
Showbiz411 (to Stephen Moyer)” How do you feel about the new season?
Stephen: Every time we get to the point of where we think, how are we going to top last year?  Are we going to make it as good as it’s been before?  Our writers room somehow comes up with it again and again.  It’s so cool to watch them write the scripts and hone them.  I’m in the enviable position of being able to take all that stuff and  putting my own stamp on it. It’s so nice to get our family back together every six months and do our thing.
Showbiz411: Speaking about family, Anna told me you bring the kids to work.
Stephen-They pimped out this old trailer for us for the kids.  Suzuki Ingerslev, the set designer, pimped it out and made it this fantastic thing for the kids. They get to come with us all the time.
Showbiz411: Anything you can scoop us for next season?
Stephen: It gets funnier, bloodier, sexier and dirtier as the weeks go by.
Showbiz411:  What do you have planned for the summer?
Stephen: I’m going to play Billy Flynn in ‘Chicago’ at the end of July at the Hollywood Bowl.  I’m excited, a tad nervous, but excited.

Chris Messina, Mindy Kaling’s Foil, Directing First Feature with Mary Elizabeth Winstead

0

EXCLUSIVE: You know Chris Messina. He’s Mindy Kaling’s foil, possible  love interest on her Fox TV show. He’s featured on “The Newsroom” as Jane Fonda’s son. He played Amy Adams’ husband in “Julie and Julia” and was the fiancee of  Rebecca Hall in “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.” But now Messina is spending his summer directing his first feature film. It has no title so far but it does have stars and a great producer in Jamie Patricof– “Place Beyond the Pines,” “Blue Valentine.”

The Messina movie will star Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Troy Garity, Derek Luke and the recently revived Don Johnson (“Django Unchained”). The movie is written by Jessica Strong with Katie Nehry and Justin Shilton based on characters the latter two created.

Here’s the description: “Workaholic attorney, Alex [Winstead] is forced to reinvent her life after her husband
suddenly leaves. Now faced with the humdrum and sometimes catastrophic events that permeate
the fabric of our lives, Alex discovers both a vulnerability and inner strength she had not yet tapped all
while trying to hold together her broken family.”

This sounds like a Sundance movie. But the timing might be tight for a mid-October acceptance.

Shirley Jones, 79, to Play 82 Year Old William Shatner’s Mother on TV Comedy

0

I know that “Hot in Cleveland” has a Susan Harris-like wackiness, so this probably seems right to them. But Shirley Jones, the great Hollywood star of “Oklahoma!” and “Elmer Gantry” and “Carousel” will appear on the live premiere of the TVLand show on June 19th. Are you ready? She’s playing the mother–the mother– of William Shatner’s character, whatever that is. Shatner, the forever James T. Kirk, is 82. Hmmm….Betty White, 91, and youngsters Valerie Bertinelli, Wendi Malick and Jane Leeves are the regulars….No one’s mentioned their ages, the fact that Jones is younger than Shatner and more appropriately aged to play his sister. But that’s TV, I guess. Jones’s most famous role as a mother was as the matriarch of “The Partridge Family.”

will.i.am Album “Willpower” Sells Just 55,000 Copies– Even with Britney, Justin, and Miley Guest Stars

4

What happened to will.i.am? The leader of the Black Eyed Peas released an all-star album six weeks ago. And it’s an all-out flop. “Willpower” dropped on April 23rd, just ten weeks ago. It’s currently number 96 on Billboard. On Amazon, it ranks at number 555,644– that’s right, you didn’t read that wrong. The sales are a total write off, an unmitigated disaster.

Evidently music fans had plenty of real will power– “Willpower”  sold a shockingly meager 55,000 copies. That’s right– fifty five thousand dollars. Or what will.i.am spends at a nightclub on bottle service.

What makes “Willpower” — with a hashtag– all the more perplexing is that it’s filled with top of the pops guest stars. Britney Spears, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus– certainly marketable names among disposable stars– are featured on singles. The Britney single, “Scream and Shout,” made it to number 1.

But it turns out that the singles from the album sold over 4 million copies. Soundscan tells me Britney’s single moved 3 million units. And over a million more went to other individual tracks.

But the Bieber single, “ThatPower,” only got to number 17. And now, that’s it. I’m told that will.i.am, real name Will Adams, –who I think wrote a great album of pop hits–thinks he can revive “Willpower” by making a new video with Miley Cyrus for her song, “Fall Down.” The concept is supposed to be a take off on Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” in which Miley– now making a big career jump with a new look and her own new hit–would play a plantation owner’s daughter.

Yes, a plantation owner’s daughter.

But the 55,000 copies is something of a shock, and a head scratcher. It certainly shows how difficult the music business is these days. My guess is that Will learned a lesson as he tried to make a Quincy Jones-type album with lots of guests. His audience–used to Fergie singing lead– didn’t want three white teenyboppers. If he re-records those songs with serious singers, of appropriate ages, and a little multicultural, he could have a hit.
