TV Ratings: “General Hospital” Beats “Young and the Restless” in Key Demo, And Beats Odds

3

For the first time since February 2011, “General Hospital” beat number 1 soap “The Young and the Restless” in the key demo. In fact, the ABC soap–which was set to be cancelled in favor of Katie Couric’s talk show back in 2010–is within spitting distance of the CBS soap in the other demos, which are all about young women with buying power watching the shows.

It’s a vindication for “GH” after ABC mercilessly cancelled its other two soaps, “All My Children” and “One Life to Live,” sending them into a licensing black hole with Prospect Park Productions. It’s also ironic as the producer who almost got “GH” snuffed, Jill Farren Phelps, has moved her unpopular way of driving a soap to “Y&R.” This past week she even copied an unpopular story she executed on “GH”– the hit and run death of a small child– to the CBS show.

Meanwhile, “GH” aims for November sweeps by having cliffhangers almost every day. As for “All My Children” and “One Life to Live”– no one seems to know if they’ll ever come back online via Prospect Park, or if ABC’s license with that company will ever end.

“Wikileaks” Movie Is Bigger Bomb Than Anyone Imagined: $1.5 for Whole Weekend

1

The Wikileaks movie, known as “The Fifth Estate,” is a bigger bomb than anyone could have imagined. The Disney release did $587,000 on Friday night, and will be lucky to hit $1.5 mil for the total weekend. The number of screens isn’t high– just 1,769. But new Disney chief Alan Horn must have sensed trouble brewing with the lukewarm to bad reviews.

On top of “The Lone Ranger,” Disney has had a trying year certainly. They’re waiting for Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson in “Saving Mr. Banks” to give them a good run. All signs are good for that one, and for “Thor” through Marvel. But “The Fifth Estate” is done. Julian Assange must be very happy.

Daniel Bruhl co-stars in “The Fifth Estate” and in “Rush.” Neither movie is going to be a box office hit, although “Rush” is a great film. The poor guy is so good, and he must be wondering what the heck is going on.

Elsewhere, “12 Years A Slave” opened in very limited release to very good but not breathtaking numbers. This one may have to percolate a bit. But the Steve McQueen drama is not to be missed.

Confirmed: NYC Landmark Roseland Ballroom Set to Close in April 2014

2

UPDATE SATURDAY 12:27AM: I’ve confirmed independently that Roseland is indeed history. “The owner is developing the property,” a source who’s on the inside told me. Roseland opened in 1922 and moved to its current location on West 52nd St. in 1956. Albert Ginsberg bought in 1981 and promised everyone he wouldn’t shut down. Thirty two years later, it seems the Ginsbergs are cashing in. Or cashing out. Ironically, across the street last year there was a threat of Gallagher’s Steak House shutting down. It was saved at the last minute. New York’s rare and storied history is disappearing quickly.

FRIDAY NIGHT:

Billboard is reporting that New York City’s famed Roseland Ballroom is set to close in April 2014. The article says the information comes from an internal memo. So far nothing’s been confirmed. But if true, it would be yet another tragedy for landmarks in New York– and one closure of a famed historic site under the rein of Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

It’s not like the cavernous Roseland on West 52nd St. isn’t busy. It’s used all the time for concerts, dances, and Broadway show openings. But the space must be coveted by real estate developers, Bloomberg’s favorite New Yorkers, for use as yet another skyscraper of condos with a CVS and large, anonymous restaurant in its base.

Fifty years from now, people can say they made great memories inside a Bank of America lobby…PS this version of Roseland was built in 1956, but the original was built in 1922. When Albert Ginsberg bought it in 1981, there was speculation that he’d raze it then. Thirty two years later, here we are, it seems…

Since Bloomberg was elected, Tavern on the Green, the Bottom Line, Elaine’s, and CBGB, not to mention a lot of Greenwich Village, have all been erased. The Russian Tea Room operates as a facsimile of itself. The Cedar Tavern closed in 2006 and is now a nail salon. No knows what happened to Chumley’s. And coffee shops and diners have mostly vanished, replaced by franchises so that tourists from Kerplunk will feel like they’re at home…

John Legend: Ancestors Were Kidnapped, Just As in “12 Years a Slave”

5

Pop star and Grammy award winner John Legend is executive producing the soundtrack for “12 Years a Slave”–Columbia Records is releasing it on November 11th. Legend has an unusual connection to Steve McQueen’s extraordinary movie. His ancestors suffered a similar fate to Solomon Northrup in 1851– a decade after Northrup was kidnapped. The weird part of this is that Legend (real name John Stephens) didn’t know this until he participated in Henry Louis Gates’s PBS documentary “Finding Your Roots.”

The episode– in which Gates explores the families of Legend and of Wanda Sykes– was aired a year ago. You can see it here: http://www.pbs.org/wnet/finding-your-roots/.  You can fast forward along to about 17 minutes in when Gates tells Legend the harrowing story of how his ancestors, the Polly family, who were legally free in Ohio, were kidnapped from their home and removed to Kentucky and Virginia. They were sold into slavery. It was unbelievable when Gates explained it to Legend in “Finding Your Roots.” But now with “12 Years a Slave,” sadly quite believable.

Indeed, the story of the Polly family’s journey culminated in an order from the Governor of Ohio in 1860– nine years after eight Polly children were abducted, separated and sold. A record of the order still exists– http://lawrencecountyohio.com/black/stories/pollynegro1.htm.

The whole thing is amazing. But I think now we’re going to be hearing more of these stories.

This is how it reads:

Ironton Register, February 2, 1860

The following is a copy of Gov. Dennison’s Message relating the Polly Negro Family, kidnapped from this county in 1851, passage (or message) in answer to a resolution offered in the House by Representative Nigh, of this county:
STATE OF OHIO EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT }
Jan. 24th, 1860}
To The House of Representatives:

I have received a copy of a resolution, passed by your honorable body, requesting the Governor to transmit to you “all information in his possession, relating to the Polly negroes kidnapped from the county of Lawrence, and now held in slavery in the State of Virginia or elsewhere, together with the amount of all sums of money expended in the prosecution of suits for their reclamation, and for other purposes connected therewith, when and to whom paid,” etc. I

have the honor to state that on the 27th of February, 1851, the General Assembly passed a preamble and resolution in these words: “WHEREAS, It has been represented to this General Assembly that on the night of the sixth of January last, seven of the children and one of the grand-children of Peyton Polly, all said to be free colored persons, residing in Lawrence county, in this State were forcibly seized and carried into Kentucky, and are therein now held in slavery contrary to law:

And “WHEREAS:

It is represented that said Peyton Polly is poor and unable to raise the pecuniary means necessary to procure counsel to test in a Court of law the right of his said children to their liberty. Therefore. Resolved, That the Governor be, and he is hereby authorized to inquire into the facts of said alleged seizure and abduction, and if, on such inquiry, he shall become satisfied that said representations are probably true, that he shall employ counsel and adopt such other measures as shall conduce most especially to restore said persons to their liberty, and that the cost and expenses thereof shall be paid from his contingent fund.”

Under this resolution Gov. Wood appointed Joel W. Wilson, of Seneca county, as the agent of the State to take the case in hand. The family, it appeared, were originally slaves in Kentucky, and were owned by one David Campbell, of Pike co., in that State. — On the 20th Jan. 1849, Campbell and his wife executed their bill of sale to Douglas Polly one black woman named Violet, aged 38 years, one black boy named Dugel, aged 15 years, one black boy named Dayton, aged 13 years, one black boy named Harrison, aged 10 years, one black boy named Nelson, aged 8 years, one named Aaron, aged 4 years, one black girl, aged 6 years, and one black girl, aged 2 years.

The Douglas Polly to whom the sale was made was a free man of color, who had been a slave of David Polly, but was duly emancipated and set free by his last will and testament, so entered of record in Pike county, Kentucky. These slaves were sold to him for the purpose of being brought to Ohio and emancipated. It appears also that after the sale the former owner removed from Kentucky to Virginia, leaving them in the possession of the said Douglas.

The creditors of the former owner instituted proceedings against said Douglas to set aside said sale on the ground that it was made to defraud creditors, and subject said negroes to the payment of their former owner’s debts. Whereupon the said Douglas, who has acquired some $1,500, paid off all the claims against them, and was permitted to remove them personably to Ohio, where he brought them and set them free.

Sometime after they were brought to this State and set free, their former owner executed another bill of sale, for them, to a man named Justice, who resided in Lawrence county, Kentucky, which said bill of sale expressed as a consideration the sum of one thousand dollars; but it was supposed that was paid, and that said Justice was to have a part of them if he succeeded in getting them. Upon said second bill of sale being executed to said Justice, he came into Ohio to reclaim them as fugitive slaves, but did not succeed.

The matter rested in this way until 1850, when a body of armed men came into this State in the night, and kidnapped all of the children, leaving the father and mother behind. One of said children, thus kidnapped was an infant, born in the state of Ohio.

— Messrs. Loughborough and Ballard of Louisville, and James Harlan, of Frankfort, were employed by Mr. Wilson as attorney and counsel in Kentucky, and after protracted litigation in various courts of that State, four of the negroes were declared free by the Court of Appeal in 1853, and returned to their friends in Ohio.

The other four had been sold into Virginia before process could be served in Kentucky. One has since died, and to one of the survivors a child has been born, making the number in Virginia still four.

In behalf of these, Messrs. McComas and Samuels of Barboursville; and Mr. Fry of Wheeling, and Mr. Laidly, of Guyandott, were employed as attorney and counsel, and after a similar litigation they were declared free by the court of Cabell county.

This judgment, however, was reversed by the court of appeals, on the ground that Wayne county being the actual residence of the defendants, Cabell county had no jurisdiction in the case. Here follows a statement of the items of expense incurred in the prosecution of these suits, amounting, in the aggregate to $3,257.75.

The Message concludes as follows:
“The litigation had been renewed in Wayne county, and when my predecessor addressed a letter in March, 1856, to Mr. Laidly, who had been represented to him as well qualified in all respects for the conduct of the case, inquiring into its condition and the probable expenses of prosecuting it to a conclusion, Mr. Laidly replied that no additional counsel would be thereafter required, that all future expenses, including the expenses of taking deposition and compensation for his own services would not exceed two hundred dollars, and that a favorable decision might be expected the following August.

The sum of one hundred dollars was accordingly remitted to him on account, but the litigation was not brought to the expected termination. Subsequently other letters were received from Laidly, asking a further remittance, and asking the employment of additional counsel; and finally, in November last, a letter was addressed by direction of the Governor, to Mr. Leete, of Ironton, proposing to pay his expenses if he would go to Virginia and ascertain the exact condition of the case, and the probabilities of success in its further prosecution.

To this letter Mr. Leete replied on the 25th of November, stating that he would, at his earliest convenience, go to Barboursville and collect the facts, and report them for information of the Executive. He also expressed the opinion that some additional counsel should be employed in it. He suggested that Geo. W. Summers, of Kanawha, be retained. Since this letter from Mr. Leete nothing further has been heard from him in regard to the case.
W. DENNISON.

Golden Oscar October Moment: 4 Films With Near Perfect Scores

0

Remember this weekend when you’re complaining that there’s nothing to see in the movie theaters. This weekend two movies with near-perfect scores join two others that are just as good. “All Is Lost” and “12 Years a Slave” are ranked on Rotten Tomatoes at 95% and 96%. That’s only slightly better than “Gravity” (97%) and “Captain Phillips” (94%). Not too far away is “Rush” (88%). Those are four, if not five, Oscar nominees for Best Picture right there. And it’s only mid-October.

What’s happening this weekend is rarer than a lunar eclipse. Of them all, of course, “12 Years a Slave” will prove to have the most interesting journey. I’ve seen it twice (this happens) and all I can say is, everybody has to see it at least once. Today’s very positive New York Times review was good, but it didn’t really capture some of the absolutely heart-stopping moments in Steve McQueen’s movie.

You really have to read the book (it costs 99 cents to download it from amazon) to understand the magnitude of what Solomon Northrup went through– and that it was published seven years before the Civil War– to get the idea of the horror of ignorance in this country. http://tinyurl.com/p3k8m8e.
That said, Robert Redford’s performance in “All is Lost” is a triumph. And what’s interesting is that all four of these films is built around a very American kind of hero that never gives up but never in a cartoonish way. The studios got it right for a change.

Exclusive: (Some) Rolling Stones Playing NYC Club Gig Next Month

10

Yes, some of the Rolling Stones— definitely two, maybe three– will play a small New York City club next month. Ronnie Wood and Mick Taylor are setting up shop for three nights at the Cutting Room on East 32nd St. and Park Avenue. That’s the club co-owned by Chris Noth with his longtime business partner Steve Walter. The dates are November 7, 8, and 9th. But check the Cutting Room website for info on how to buy tickets. I say ‘three’ Stones’ because you know that Keith Richards will make an appearance at some point. I’m told the first night will be by invite only, and that all NYC rock stars are encouraged to join in. The Cutting Room’s been doing business at this address for a couple of years, but this will be their official “opening”…

Last night in New York: fundraisers for two charities– Little Kids Rock, Steve and Maureen van Zandt’s pet project, with performances by Elvis Costello, Brian Wilson, Debbie Harry, Jake Clemons, Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers, and Darlene Love. It’s a great organization…check them out at www.littlekidsrock.com

…Also, Project ALS had their 15th anniversary event at Roseland with Rob Morrow, Richard Kind, Dave Annable, Gaby Hoffman, Mickey Sumner, Gina Gershon, Paul Rudd, Christine Taylor, and lots of others. Project ALS was started by Jenifer Estess, one of the great people in the world and the founding member of Naked Angels Theater troupe with John Kennedy Jr. Hard to believe they are both gone, and so young. Jenifer’s sisters have carried on this important work…you can donate to them at www.projectals.org

“Endless Love,” A Great Novel, Gets Second Chance in the Movies (Trailer)

0

How many times can Hollywood make a movie out of Scott Spencer’s great novel, “Endless Love”? The answer: twice. No one gets a second chance like this. The first “Endless Love” featured the Diana Ross-Lionel Richie hit, Otherwise, it was a horror. Martin Hewitt played David, the main character. We never heard from him again. Brooke Shields was his lover– well, she was tall, at least.

The movie captured nothing of the book’s language or eroticism or sense of obsession. (David was so obsessed with Jade that he burned her house down just to save her family.) Franco Zeffirelli directed it based on his “Romeo and Juliet.” After that he went back to directing operas.

The new movie is directed by Shana Feste, and stars Alex Pettyfer (who looks right) and newcomerish ingenue Gabriella Wilde as Jade. Bruce Greenwood steps in as Jade’s father, Hugh, succeeding the great Don Murray from the earlier film.

Will it work now? I hope so. Read the book, please. Scott Spencer is a great American novelist. He doesn’t deserve two rotten adaptations.
