Barbra Streisand Agrees to Direct Episode of James Brolin’s New TV Series for Next Spring

EXCLUSIVE Barbra Streisand must be very happy husband James Brolin is out of the house all day working on a new TV series.

Sources tell me that Streisand recently paid a set visit to Brolin’s highly touted new CBS sitcom “Life in Pieces.” The show stars Brolin as the patriarch of an eccentric family. Two time Oscar winner Dianne Wiest his wife, and among their kids are the very talented Colin Hanks, Zoe Lister Jones and Thomas Sadoski.

When Streisand appeared, producers of the show gently suggested that she might direct an episode. Streisand surprised them with her answer. She said she would do it, but only after the series gets picked up for its “back nine,” or the second half of its season through the spring.

Blackmail? Les Moonves, are you listening?

She may have to fulfill her promise. “Life in Pieces” is going to be a hit, and CBS is likely to run a full season order. The show debuts this coming Monday.

Streisand could use the work. She hasn’t directed a film since “The Mirror Has Two Faces” in 1996. She’s never directed TV (god forbid) or appeared on any series except “Saturday Night Live.” She’d be a great character on “The Big Bang Theory,” though.

PS I’m told that Brolin is much loved on the set of the show, is “very funny” and “out there,” the younger members of the cast all love him and Wiest. Weist, who’s really a movie and theater actress, didn’t have much fun on her last TV show, “Law & Order,” years ago. But she’s also getting high marks from the crew. “Life in Pieces” — fingers crossed, hopefully CBS will let it settle in.

The Who Cancel Entire US Tour: Roger Daltrey Has Viral Meningitis

Roger Daltrey’s viral meningitis causes cancellation of entire tour by The Who this fall. They will reschedule for next spring. Ironic since Daltrey is the one always fit and never took drugs or did anything untoward. Let’s send him prayers and good wishes.

Daltrey says in a statement: “We are very sorry to disappoint our fans in this way. For the last four weeks, I have been in and out of the hospital and have been diagnosed with viral Meningitis. I am now on the mend and feeling a lot better but I am going to need a considerable time to recover. The doctors tell me I will make a complete recovery, but that I should not do any touring this year.”

The Who had cancelled just a few dates prior to this citing Daltrey’s “mystery virus.” Who’s Next? Hopefully, no one.

Lady Gaga’s song “Till It Happens to You” hits iTunes at midnight and the song– which I told you about sometime ago– will earn money for charity.

The song written by Diane Warren comes from the Kirby Dick documentary “The Hunting Ground” about campus rape. Gaga and Warren, as performer and writer, should make it to the Oscars. And because it was released before Sept 30, “Til it Happens to You” could be at the Grammys as well.

Mission Impossible: To Get “Rogue Nation” to $200 Million, 2-for-1 Sale on Tickets

Oh what to do! Pretty much everyone has seen “Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation.” The movie’s been a huge hit. As of today, it’s at $188 million.

But that still leaves $12 million to the magic mark of $200 million. What to do?? How to get Tom Cruise that magic number?

Great idea: Paramount is offering a 2 for 1 sale. Starting Friday and going through next Thursday, the 24th, you can get two tickets for the price of one at most major theaters.

This is a smart move. Next week Yom Kippur knocks out at least 24 hours of movie going. This way, Paramount juices interest, and gets a shot closer to $200 million. Movie studios like to reach those nice round numbers. But Rogue Nation is still a skip away, and soon theaters will give it the boot for new movies.

Is it an impossible mission? Let’s see.

Keith Richards Says New Stones Album Next Year, Also He Prefers the “Roll” to the “Rock”

Keith Richards says there will be a new Rolling Stones album next year. The issue came up in an interview for his new album “Cross Eyed Heart” and the accompanying Netflix film and DVD “Under the Influence.” They are released this week.

The album is wonderful by the way, full of blues and guts. It’s all real and heartfelt. There’s one song on it, called “Lover’s Pen,” that is absolutely remarkable. I hope every smart music fan takes a chance on it. I’m also crazy about “Heartstopper,” “Blues in the Morning,” and “Something for Nothing.”

The movie, directed by Morgan Neville, shows Keith at his most charming. There’s a lot of talk about how the Rolling Stones came to be, and what they mean in the larger picture. You do get the feeling that Keith is kind of an unheralded genius. His reputation as a musician has been obscured by his publicity as a druggie and outlaw. But here he is, still alive, kicking, funny and more thoughtful than ever.

He prefers the “roll” he says, to “the rock.” He’s a blues man. The Stones, he points out, are based on two albums– the Best of Muddy Waters and the Best of Chuck Berry. He and Mick met over those two albums. The movie also shows his great friendship with Buddy Guy. There’s footage of Keith with all of them.

So what if there’s a new Stones album? Keith is the musical heart of the Stones. “Crosseyed Heart” is kind of an essential throw back lesson. And for fun, go back and read his book.

Apple’s Jeff Jones is constantly thinking of new ways to repurpose the Beatles catalog. His new project? A re-release of the Beatles “1” album, 27 number 1 hits along with previously unreleased videos made of the songs from back in the day. The 27 numbers will also be in surround sound 5.1 for the first time. You know you’ll buy it. I’ll buy it. I want it now. There’s also a big color booklet involved. Paul and Ringo did new audio commentary. Here’s a description of the videos. Now we just wait for “Let it Be,” the movie.

    One of two versions, this was shot the same day as ‘Hey Jude’. John’s lead vocal is completely live, as are most of Paul and George’s backing vocals. The instrumentation, including Nicky Hopkins’ electric piano, is from the master tape.

    This clip was assembled in 2003 to support the release of the album Let It Be…Naked and utilises studio footage from the famous Get Back/Let It Be sessions.
  • 21. DON’T LET ME DOWN
    This was the B-side of ‘Get Back’ and this clip is a composite of two live performances from the Apple rooftop in 1969. It was made available to support the release of Let It Be…Naked in 2003.
  • 22. FREE AS A BIRD
    The 1995 video is a work of art by director Joe Pytka, who used the concept of a bird’s-eye view to pay homage to many Beatles songs and images.
  • 23. REAL LOVE
    This video directed by Geoff Wonfor and ex-10cc and leading pop promo-maker Kevin Godley, this video was made in 1996 to support the release of the single.

Madonna: Plenty of Seats Available at All Prices for Three New York Shows

I keep getting tweets and emails from Madonna fans who’ve seen big “bald spots” at her Rebel Heart shows.

Well, Madison Square Garden and the Barclays Center are going to look a lot like the top of my own head starting tonight. That is, unless StubHub can unload the hundreds of seats they have in their inventories.

Seats for all three shows are aplenty, and at reasonable prices, in all sections. They are also available in quantities. Want to take seven or eight people? You can, and you can sit anywhere.

Secondary market ticket sellers obviously overestimated the demand for Rebel Heart seats. Maybe there will be a big walk up business. I’d go tonight, but I want to see Eliot Sumner at Pianos in the Lower East Side.

Tennis Anyone? US Open CEO Was Paid $1.3 Mil Last Year, USTA Calls Itself Non Profit Organization

Serena? Federer? Djokovic? Think they’re the highest paid players in tennis? Guess what: the US Open, which just concluded, is far more interesting backstage that on the court. I can tell you, and I’m surprised, that Gordon Smith, the CEO of the US Tennis Association, took home $1.3 mil last year. The second highest ranking exec at the US Open, COO Daniel Zausner, got $828,700.

Total salaries for the USTA last year came to almost $7 million. That doesn’t include another $14 million to independent contractors.In 2013 they claimed $131 million in assets, un-taxed assets.

How do we know this? The USTA is a 501 c3, a non profit organization. They file a Form 990 Tax return. Like the NFL, they consider themselves a, ahem, charity.

You do realize the US Open is played just once a year. It lasts two weeks. What a racket! (Pun intended.) This is better than the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The USTA’s 501c3 filing is totally separate, by the way, from another one for the USTA Foundation. Patrick McEnroe, John’s brother, is paid a whopping $940K out of the foundation’s non profit monies for “player development.”

At least they’re charitable. The USTA Foundation gave away roughly $1.6 million in 2013 to youth tennis and community groups. The USTA main 501 c3 benefits no one but their execs and the maintenance of the stadium in Flushing, Queens. The latter group had $63.5 million in expenses in 2013, and none of them were grants or donations.

The huge USTA salaries are commensurate with the actual players. Singles winners of the US Open receive $3.3 million apiece. The singles runners up get $1.6 million. Semi finalists winners get $805K. This means the execs are paid in the same ballpark, so to speak, without breaking a sweat.

Get this: the 64 players who won first rounds each received just $39,500 for their work. What shnooks! They should have gotten jobs in the front office!

The USTA has lots of expenses: $13 million in rent for the National Tennis Center out in Queens.(They pay it to themselves since the USTA owns Arthur Ashe Stadium, where tickets can run into the thousands of dollars to see matches.)  Legal fees of $720,000. Almost $1 million in travel expenses was paid for those highly remunerated execs.

Last year the USTA paid almost $2 million to have security guards at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Again, what a racket.

Tobey Maguire: Leonardo DiCaprio, Kevin Connolly Support His Terrific Performance as Bobby Fischer

Where has Tobey Maguire been? AWOL from films mostly, playing in high stakes Hollywood poker games and getting into a bit of trouble. He hasn’t starred in a hit movie since 2007’s “Spider Man 3.” All that is about to change.

Maguire, now 40, plays profoundly troubled, perpetually paranoid and sadly mentally troubled chess iconoclast Bobby Fischer in Ed Zwick’s sensational “Pawn Sacrifice” opening  tomorrow. The Blecker Street release, shown at the 2014 Toronto Film Festival, has a strong 86% among critics and bloggers.  It may be Maguire’s best acting since “The Cider House Rules.”

Written by Steven Knight and directed by Edward Zwick, “Pawn Sacrifice” co-stars the talented Lily Rabe, who plays Bobby’s sister Joan, a looming Liev Schreiber as Soviet chess whiz Boris Spassky, lauded theater actor Michael Stuhlbarg, who plays his long suffering lawyer/confidante Paul Marshall, and the always terrific Peter Sarsgaard who plays Father Bill Lombardy, a childhood fellow chess friend who becomes his adviser.

Zwick assembled an impressive cast. He told me at last week’s premiere: “I made sure to put together some of the best actors out there.”

Zwick more than adeptly pulls it off, with the story of Brooklyn born Fischer, his rise to world rock star status and his impending, tragic fall.

Tobey is married to the lovely Jennifer Meyer, daughter of Universal Pictures chief Ron Meyer. Meyer made an appearance at the screening, as did Tobey’s BFF’s Leo DiCaprio (hanging in the back row with a baseball cap on) and “Entourage” star Kevin Connolly, who told me he’s excited to direct the long awaited John Gotti flick with John Travolta.  “It will be a wild ride,” Kevin told me. That’s an understatement considering the movie’s background.

Sarsgaard told me: “I’ve always been a chess geek. I was playing it on my phone in the car here. Bobby Fischer’s  story is really sad. He became homeless, with his already existing paranoia worsening. He still thought everything was a conspiracy. When 9/11 happened, he called into a radio station and blamed the US. He became a huge embarrassment, and kept breaking the law. He finally landed in Iceland where they gave him asylum and he died there, broke, in 2008.”

Maguire did his homework as well saying, “I’ve been wanting to do this for about ten years. I watched everything I could get my hands on and talked to so many people who knew him. I wanted to get it right.”

One of my favorite people is directing a movie about another beloved personality.

Actor Vondie Curtis Hall is directing “Unbreak My Heart: The Toni Braxton Story” for Lifetime. Coolness. Vondie is the “Chicago Hope” actor who also is featured in the “Daredevil” TV series and appears in the new movie “Experimenter.” Vondie’s directed a lot of TV, as well as Mariah Carey’s notorious “Glitter.” He’s married to director Kasi Lemmons.

Braxton’s movie is based on her autobiography. Her story has lot of triumphs and sadness including #1 hits and two personal bankruptcies. She had a recent comeback once again with an album of duets with Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds. Her movie will feature Edmonds, LA Reid, Reid’s first wife Pebbles, and Braxton’s singing sisters.

No word yet on who will play Toni. Maybe she’ll play herself!
