Pop Group 5 Seconds of Summer Burned in Interview: Attacks Justin Bieber, Alludes to Wild Sex Parties, Features Heavy Drinking, Sex Toys

0

I can think of at least two times pop bands were badly mangled by Rolling Stone: a piece by the intrepid Lynn Hirschberg on Hall & Oates, and the fictional story by Patrick Fugit’s William on Billy Crudup’s band Stillwater in Cameron Crowe’s movie “Almost Famous.” The results were devastating.

Now we can add Patrick Doyle’s take down of Aussie group 5 Seconds of Summer. Doyle throws them on the ‘barbie and lets them grill until they are so overcooked there may be no coming back. 5SOS’s manager Matt Emsell also allowed the four lads to be photographed for the cover of Rolling Stone naked– yes, naked, in their birthday suits.

For a band whose bread and butter ticket sales is teen girls, young teen girls, this has set off fireworks on the internet. 5SOS, it seems, has been snookered into saying horrible things about girls, their fans, Justin Bieber, and just about anyone else you can think of.

Doyle: They were wildest on their early tours, when they’d go to bars to mingle with fans after shows. “When you put four young dudes on a tour bus, playing theaters, then arenas, you’re going to have sex with a lot of girls, I guess,” says [heart-throb Luke] Hemmings. “We had a good time.” Multiple girls in one night? “I feel like I shouldn’t say,” he says with a smirk. “You could say the possibility of that is high.” Multiple girls at the same time? “The possibility is high,” he says again. He cracks a devilish grin. “The possibilities are endless.”

That the manager of this group hasn’t been fired, or sued, for letting this article happen is unbelievable. Doyle’s entire story is pitched to make 5SOS seem like Spinal Tap — idiots who lucked into something, are living a life of debauchery, and are soon to be returned to their native Australia. They drink and smoke through the entire episode, and one of them– Clifford– reveals that he suffers from severe depression and has tried to go home without much luck.

Among the revelations less salacious but kind of interesting: they are now managed by Modest, the same London company that oversees rivals One Direction. Indeed, according to Doyle, One Direction has a 50% stake in 5SOS. The original manager, who sold out his share, recalls a calculated master plan to make the boys famous in a year. (Seems this naif was conned in this story, too.)

The portrayal of Hemming’s girlfriend, named Arzaylea, a 21 year old trust fund groupie, is beyond hilarious. Doyle: As Hemmings talks in my ear, she keeps her hand on his pants, rubbing his leg. They met at a get-together in L.A. three months ago. The party was “really bad,” but Hemmings was impressed when she told him her favorite band was an Arizona emo group the Maine. He invited her to 5SOS’s house around 3 a.m., and they’ve been together ever since. He tried to keep their relationship secret for weeks, getting out of cars separately to avoid the paparazzi, but tonight it seems like he’s given up. “It’s hard,” he says. “One of the weird things is you want it to be a secret, but you don’t want it to be a secret.”

And then there’s the Bieber episode. According to Doyle, Capitol Records has put 5SOS in a Bel Air mansion a la “Entourage,” party central. When they occasionally leave, they get in trouble.

Doyle: Clifford and Hemmings hit their friend Nick Jonas’ party, then crashed one thrown by Justin Bieber at their favorite bar, the Nice Guy. They didn’t talk to Bieber – “I think he hates us,” says Clifford – but they had a good time. “It was fucking crazy, people standing on tables and shit,” he continues. “I probably shouldn’t say this, but he had his own album on loop for, like, two or three hours.” Clifford ended up in Beverly Hills at the Weeknd’s house party, which was so exclusive that the pool area had its own bouncer. Drummer Ashton Irwin – the band’s oldest and perhaps most responsible member – had been there earlier but left shortly after he was jostled up against a wall as Diddy and his crew pushed through the entrance.

Bieber — not exactly a member of Mensa himself — responded on Twitter of course, immediately.

bieber 5SOSWhat happens next? Twitter is also burning with comments from teen fans who are disappointed and confused. In one swoop, 5SOS has eviscerated its core audience. They didn’t want to be called a boy band, or appeal to young girls. Now they may have to find a whole new group of adoring fans.

So where was management? Where was a publicist? Who was minding this store? Rolling Stone, now lacking editorial integrity after their University of Virgina rape story debacle, must be thrilled they got this story.

The #1 Beatles Song on Spotify is Not “Hey Jude” or “Yesterday”– Surprise!

0

Since the Beatles went on Spotify on December 24th their songs have been added to more than 650,000 playlists.

But the most streamed Beatles song so far is not what we might have guessed was their most popular — either “Hey Jude” or “Yesterday.” It’s “Come Together,” John Lennon’s plea for peace and unity that opens the “Abbey Road” album and was a hit years later for Aerosmith. “Come Together” is number 1 both in the U.S. and around the world.

Meantime, Apple lost its exclusivity on the Beatles for iTunes after five years. You can buy digital downloads of  the albums on Amazon now. The “1” album is at number 25, The White Album is at 40, “Rubber Soul” is 50, the rest are scattered through Amazon’s top 100. This is all without fanfare since I broke the story. Amazon hasn’t advertised this at all. Don’t know why. Strange.

1. “Come Together”
2. “Hey Jude”
3. “Here Comes The Sun”
4. “Let It Be”
5. “Twist And Shout”
6. “Blackbird”
7. “I Want To Hold Your Hand”
8. “In My Life”
9. “She Loves You”
10. “Help!”

The top 10 Beatles tracks on Spotify globally:

1. “Come Together”
2. “Let It Be”
3. “Hey Jude”
4. “Love Me Do”
5. “Yesterday”
6. “Here Comes The Sun”
7. “Help!”
8. “All You Need Is Love”
9. “I Want To Hold Your Hand”
10. “Twist And Shout”

Adele Sold More than 1 Million Copies In Week Leading Up to Christmas

0

Hey, remember Adele? “Star Wars” kinda took her headlines away. But guess what? Her “25” album sold 1,112,092 copies in the week leading up to Christmas. That means she’s up around 6.5 to 7 million copies total. We’ll know more on Monday. Hello!

The “Star Wars” soundtrack sold over 100,000 copies and came in at number 5. This is amazing because it sounds like the scores to all the other “Star Wars” movies. But you know, cool, right?

Justin Bieber is still selling “Porpoise” to someone– 143,271 copies. I hope all the producers are getting good royalties.

Chris Brown, unfiltered Tweeter, did 139,734 copies of “Royalty.” The album is named for his illegit daughter, who poses with him on the cover. Was there a mother involved? Does she get a royalty? Is that what the kid is named for? (Just kidding, tho I know Chris prob has no sense of humor.)

Oh yes other Adele news: she sold another 90K combined of her other two albums. Just for fun. If Sony isn’t making a “25.2” live album from that TV special, I’d be very very surprised.

Tarantino 3 Hour “Hateful Eight” Sells Out All Shows on Opening Night, No Protests

0

Box office bonanza: Quentin Tarantino’s “Hateful Eight” sold out all its opening night shows in 100 theaters. There were no protests by anyone as the three hour plus intermission showing in 100 theaters scored $1,905,000 on Friday night. That’s $19,050 per showing. This is the “Star Wars” of independent films, in other words. Packed houses viewing 70 mm plus Ennio Morricone’s beautiful score. Yowza.

Elsewhere besides “Star Wars,” the other Christmas day opening hits were “Daddy’s Home,” and “Joy.” “Concussion” opened just fine, and “Sisters” is proceeding apace. “Creed” is going to cross $100 million this weekend.

Meanwhile, “The Revenant” opened in 4 theaters and scored $43K per screen. Many people stayed and watched to see who played the Bear. It’s still the most pressing question after How happy is J.J. Abrams?

Oh yes– Blah blah blah. Even as we speak, “Star Wars” is heading to $1 billion global, probably tomorrow. Last night they made $50 million. On Christmas Day. Up to $440 million this morning. Will cross $500 mil domestic tonight or early tomorrow.

“Downton Abbey” Ends in the UK, Leaving the Door Open for a Probable Movie

0

“Downton Abbey” ended tonight in Britain, with an apparently satisfying ending that left a lot of doors open for one more go.

It’s a happy ending, with no spoilers here, just enough to say the doors close on Downton with reportedly in everyone in fine fettle expecting the future.

Of course, the show ends in 1925, with Maggie Smith’s Dowager Countess still alive and quipping. This means that there are still two good years before the world economy starts to sour ominously. A movie could still take place in that time and have dramatic endings for some of the characters. The pay off would be a lot better for the show’s creators at $10 a pop than on public television.

So threats of a movie now seem more real. But it’s nice to know that  the TV series ends without great weeping or rending of garments. As I always said, no one wanted to get news of Violet Grantham’s death on Christmas Day.

All hail, “Dowton Abbey.” They were the Best Ensemble on television (save “Mad Men”). Now they will live on in misty memories.

The final season begins in the U.S. on January 3rd.

More “Downton” news imminently

Janet Jackson Pulls a “Michael,” Suspends Tour with News of Mysterious Surgery– Over 20 Dates Including Key Northeast Cities

0

Just a little add on: Janet has played about 26 shows total on the Unbreakable tour. Including the ones she already missed and has just cancelled, more than 50 dates went into oblivion. So FYI.

Hey you guys… Happy Holidays to each and every one of you. I need you to know, I learned today, from my doctors that I must have surgery soon. It breaks my heart to tell you that I am forced to postpone the Unbreakable Tour until the spring. Every date will be rescheduled. Please hold on to your tickets. They will be honored in a special way when the new schedule is announced. Please pray for me, my family and our entire company during this difficult time. There will be no further comment. I love you all so much and am ever grateful for your understanding and your love. Gon’ b alright.

With these words, Janet Jackson took to Instagram and invoked the memory of brother Michael and his idol, Elizabeth Taylor. Things not going well? Tickets not selling? Getting bored? Announce an illness  and then get out of Dodge. I really like this line especially– the tickets will be honored in a special way when the new schedule is announced.

That should be good.

Well, we all hope Janet is 100% healthy and wish her well. Sorry if I can’t be less cynical. But the album didn’t sell, the concert dates drag on, and you know, it’s not as fun as it used to be. Insurance covers this. And the comeback next spring will give her a publicity hook. It’s very old school Hollywood p.r. I applaud it. Because if you’re a fan of certain people, like Janet or Liza or Cher, this is what they were taught. And we need that drama, don’t we?

Janet is following in the footsteps of her late Brother Michael, He was famous for not showing up or cancelling appearances, pleading illness. Michael learned how to do this from the Queen of All Illness, Elizabeth Taylor. He even missed court dates with a range of illness excuses.

This is a big deal, however. This is over 30 or more dates including key Northeast cities where media is really concentrated. No Brooklyn, Jones Beach, Boston, Washington. Those dates are important. So let’s hope Janet gets well and returns fit as a fiddle.

“Star Wars” The Studio Awakens to $400 Mil Christmas Day, Near $900 Mil Global

0

Han, Leia, Poe, Rey, Finn, BB8, et al found a big present at the bottom of their Christmas tree today. “Star Wars” started the day, December 25th, with $391,051,329 in box office receipts. The blockbuster made $27.6 million on Christmas Eve.  Sometime around noon, I guess, the film soared past $400 million to around $420 million or thereabouts. The global total is nearing $900 million.

That’s a nice Christmas present for Disney and Bob Iger, not to mention all the people who worked on the film who get profit participation. George Lucas (who still gets a taste of something somewhere and mmm mmm good) should be happy. Besides having made him a fortune, “Star Wars” is a legacy for him as a writer and creator of characters people are still talking about and adoring some 40 years later.

Disney should have no problem making it to $2 billion.

As a matter of perspective: “Phantom Menace” total US was $475 million. “Attack of the Clones” was $310 million. “Revenge of the Sith,” the last “Star Wars” movie in 2005, made a domestic  total of $380 million.

“The Force Awakens” is a phenom. My guess is by the time the trilogy ends, patricide will not be its lasting legacy.

Apple iTunes Exclusivity Deal With The Beatles Ends Very Quietly After Five Years

0

We never knew how long the iTunes deal for exclusive downloading of The Beatles was supposed to last. But after five years it does seem to be over. Amazon Prime is now offering all of the main Beatles albums for $7.99 apiece. The Apple party is over. The Fab Four are free of the closed iTunes world. Yippee.

The original deal, cut at the end of 2010, was the result of many legal disputes the Beatles had with Apple computers over the Apple Records name. Steve Jobs had liked the name and logo, so he took it. In an earlier settlement Jobs agreed that his Apple would never have a music company. But then Jobs did it anyway.

What’s interesting is that there was no announcement of the Apple deal coming to an end. The albums just appeared on amazon.com with a “Buy” button for $7.99. This is a very deep discounted price for Beatles albums, too. The physical CDs are rarely offered for anything less than $12.99. With amazon dipping to $7.99, iTunes has done the same thing, too.

One theory: this is the equivalent of an inventory sale. Now that the Beatles have finally remixed their hits on the “1+1” album, it’s only a matter of time before they sell all new mixes on all the albums. The sound on “1+1”
is amazing. If you play it side by side with the 2009 box set, there’s a huge difference. So my guess is Christmas 2017 we get the Beatles Remixed. We’ll have to buy the catalog all over again. It’s brilliant. Evil genius.

“Star Wars” Breaks All Time Tuesday Record, Heads Closer to $1 Billion Globally

0

Tuesday news: “Star Wars” took in $37.3 million and broke the all time Tuesday record.

Hey what else is new?

The global box office is now around $690 million including the U.S.’s $325.4M. The One Billion Dollar Mark is not in a galaxy far far away but getting ever closer. “Star Wars” opened just FIVE days ago.

Emotions are running high, too. Someone was arrested for threatening to shoot their friend if they told them what happened in the movie.

This is what happens: people fly around, there are light sabers and family issues. Don’t shoot!

Again, over 32 million people in the U.S. have seen this movie.

UPDATE The Beatles Will Start Streaming Their Music on Nine Music Platforms At Midnight Tonight

0

The_Beatles_-_2015-12-23_06.41.15UPDATE The Beatles just announced as I said they would– streaming will begin tonight at 12:01 AM. Their website says: “The band of sun appears where The Beatles are streaming now. Watch as the music spreads around the globe on Christmas Eve.”

There are nine streaming services altogether, from Spotify to AppleMusic to Tidal to Amazon Prime, etc. It’s interesting that although the Beatles download exclusively on iTunes, Apple was treated just like another service in this regard.

Funny, too, because the website is still being updated with things like Playlists and Explore the Albums.

from Tuesday night:

Exclusive. There will be an announcement from the Beatles tomorrow morning at 6am Eastern time.  Reps for the group will announce streaming on all platforms including Spotify and Apple Music. I’m toldimage

it’s pretty much “everything” from the Beatles catalog that’s owned by Universal Music’s Capitol Records. Keep refreshing…
