Cyndi Lauper Playing North Carolina, Donating All Profits to Local Pro-LGBT Charity

Cyndi Lauper is going to play North Carolina anyway. She’s decided to go to Raleigh and turn her concert day into a day of protest against anti-bathroom law, and support Equality NC. Cyndi is fearless. And she has a huge LGBT following that will turn up in droves. She will get a lot of media attention. And who knows? Maybe some of her celebrity friends will join her. (Cher? Rosie?)

Here’s what she posted to facebook:

Sadly, once again, the civil rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people have been trampled on with the recent passage of HB2 in North Carolina. Me and my team at the True Colors Fund have been closely monitoring the situation in North Carolina and support the efforts of the Human Rights Campaign, Equality North Carolina, and others to repeal HB2 in the upcoming legislative session. The pressure to repeal HB2 is building and it is beautiful.
In the dark haze of such oppression, people and companies are stepping up to fight back against this unjust law and ensure that all North Carolinians are treated with dignity and respect, especially the transgender community. I have seen time and time again what can happen when people join together to do what is fair and the effort to repeal HB2 is the right and fair thing to do.
I am hopeful that all of the current efforts to repeal HB2 will be successful and the True Colors Fund and I will continue to do all that we can to help. In that vein, the best way I know how to make a difference is what I have strived to do my whole life and that is show up for my family, friends, and fans in the LGBT community. So, for that reason I think the best way I can do my part is to turn my show in Raleigh on June 4th into an entire day to build public support to repeal HB2. I will be donating all of the profits from the show to Equality NC‘s efforts to repeal HB2 and I am proud of my manager and agent for joining me in this effort by donating their commissions from the show to this vital effort.
I look forward to coming to North Carolina and standing up for equality and fairness. If we truly want an inclusive society, we all have to include ourselves in the effort to make that happen. This is the best way I know how to include myself and urge you to join me in the best way you know how.

Cannes 2016 Official Selections More American Than Ever: Woody Allen, Plus Sean Penn, Jim Jarmusch

0

The main selections for Cannes 2016 bring together a greatest hits of directors who’vc been there before, and many who have won. Besides Woody Allen (who’s not in competition), there’s Pedro Almodovar, Cristian Mingiu, Sean Penn, the Dardenne brothers, the inevitable Ken Loach, Nicholas Winding Refn and so on. Americans also include Jim Jarmusch, another Cannes regular, who has two films– one in competition one in special midnight screenings.

Directors Fortnight selections won’t be announced until Tues April 19.

The actual schedule looks front loaded for US directors, too, since Woody is opening night, and Jodie Foster’s “Money Monster” and Shane Black’s “Nice Guys” have to unspool on the first Thursday and Friday because they open in the US right away.

The Un Certain Regard also has a high percentage of American films.

EXCLUSIVE Warren Beatty Film Has NO Set Release Date Because He Doesn’t Want to Do Film Festivals

0

Haha. I am laughing because The Hollywood Reporter went crazy announcing that Warren Beatty‘s untitled Howard Hughes movie has a release date. It does not. In fact, when Beatty spoke on Wednesday along with New Regency’s Brad Weston, all that was learned was the film would be released in the fall.

I told you that two weeks ago.

What THR and others don’t know is the reason there’s no set date. Warren doesn’t want to take his film to festivals. There was a big request from Cannes, and he declined.

I asked Beatty recently if he would then go to Venice. He said, “Why would I do that?” Then I said, naively, “Then Toronto? Telluride?” He said again, with a chuckle, “Why would I want to do that?”

My guess is that Beatty will have Fox hold the movie tight, a la “The Revenant,” and spring it at the last minute. No festivals seems like it might also mean the New York Film Festival. And that would be it until a mid November release.

Beatty might rightly feel that a release too soon would dilute interest by the time of the Oscar rush in early December. He’s probably correct. Building up anticipation will be key to marketing this movie. It has to be unleashed at just the right time. Too early could kill it. We’ve seen this happen over and over.

So there’s no date– just “in the fall”– but nice try.

Who Will Cancel North Carolina Next? Bieber? Dolly? Weird Al? Babyface? Lauryn Hill?

0

Now that Bruce Springsteen has cancelled his gig at Greensboro Stadium, who will be next? Ringo Starr just 86’d his show in NC.

Scheduled soon for Greensboro: shows by Justin Bieber, Dolly Parton, Babyface, Lauryn Hill and Gary Clark Jr., R. Kelly and Weird Al.

Sesame Street Live comes in on May 26th. “Sesame Street” is all about equality. Will they play their date in Greensboro?

At the Booth Amphitheater in Cary, NC, they’ve got Chis Stapleton coming up. Willie Nelson on the docket, not to mention Styx with Don Felder of the Eagles, and Kansas.

Other recording artists with upcoming shows in North Carolina include Carrie Underwood, Dierks Bentley, Pearl Jam and Duran Duran.

The question is, will these other acts go the way of Jimmy Buffett, who decided to go on with his show after making a statement against the anti-LGBT law? Or will they go with Bruce and Ringo?

I would think of all of those names, Justin Bieber would have the most impact. If he cancels, it’s a huge statement. If he continues, well, that just solidifies what people already think of him. The ball is in his court.

Beatles Alert: Ringo Starr Cancels North Carolina Concert Because of anti-LGBT Law

0
4pm EST, Wednesday, April 13, 2016 – Ringo Starr has canceled his North Carolina performance in opposition to the passing of HB2. Like Bruce Springsteen and other fellow artists, Ringo stands with those fighting against the bigotry of HB2.
Ringo states, “I’m sorry to disappoint my fans in the area, but we need to take a stand against this hatred. Spread peace and love.”
This law opens the door to discrimination everywhere by limiting anti-discrimination laws against people based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Ringo adds, “How sad that they feel that this group of people cannot be defended.”
He asks that we all support organizations that are fighting to overturn this law in whatever way we can.
As Canned Heat sang, “Let’s work together.”
And The Beatles said, “All you need is love.”

News Corp Offers $50K, But Fails to Purchase Web Address for New Site from South Carolina Piercings Shop

0

heat street storeNews Corp’s new conversative website, HeatStreet.com, launches on Monday April 18th.

But the website still has no URL as the owners of a piercing shop in Florence, South Carolina refuse to sell www.heatstreet.com.

An employee of the store told me today that the Dow Jones/Wall Street Journal company offered $50,000 for the name. The store declined.

“They think we’re in Podunk or we’re in a strip mall,” said Mark, who works with owner Lloyd Mitchell. “We’re the only piercings shop for miles around. We do fifty-to-sixty thousand dollars a week. We’ve been in business for 25 years. Now we’re doing the kids of adults we did when we started.”

Right now, the News Corp site will have to settle for www.heatst.com. If you go there now, their Word Press sign-in is open to inspection.

Shocker! Superman Isn’t “Dead” After All, He’s in the Justice League Movie

0

Someone tell Perry White! This is a headline for the Daily Planet! Superman is alive!

Well, well. At the end of “Batman v Superman,” about to make $300 million so this cannot be a spoiler, Superman is in a coffin. Dirt has been spread on the casket. But then, the dirt moves. Is Superman really dead?

Of course not. Henry Cavill has a long contract to play him. DC Comics and Warner Bros. live on Superman’s 80 year longevity. Neither Kryptonite nor Brandon Routh could kill him!

Yesterday at CinemaCon, a photo was released of the new Justice League movie. Looks like it will start with that coffin busting open! And off we go on a new adventure. What a relief!

There’s been a lot of quibbling among the fanboys about “Batman v Superman.” But even I — sick to death of comic book movies– would like to see the “Justice League.” I can’t believe it took so long.

Poor Amber Heard! Actress’s Name Spelled Wrong on New Movie’s Website

0

Amber Heard– she’s a beautiful up and coming 30 year old actress who gets a lot of attention. She’s also married to Johnny Depp.

But all that attention has escaped the makers of a website for her new movie “The Adderall Diaries.” Apparently the webmaster or designer is taking too much Adderall. They’ve spelled Amber’s last name wrong on the site.

She is not a HERD of buffalo. Rather, she’s some one we’ve HEARD a lot about. Like we’ve HEARD about her on the grapevine.

Not much to say about the movie, poorly reviewed and already available on DirectTV. It’s released on Friday by A24.

“Sing Street” Premiere Draws Eclectic A List Crowd Including Courtney Love, Rudy Giuliani

0

You know a movie is good when everyone wants to see it. Last night a celebrity crowd that ranged from Courtney Love to Rudy Giuliani (but also included famed directors Terry George and Paul Haggis) showed up waaaaay downtown at the new Metrograph for John Carney’s “Sing Street.”

Carney, you know, made two other musical fables, “Once” and “Begin Again.” “Sing Street” is the latest in a series of charming tales that promise the music will save you even when things look bleak. Carney’s set this one in his hometown of Dublin, and cast it with a bunch of unknown young people who are uniformly excellent.

The focus is on Cosmo, played by (in real life too) 16 year Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, an accomplished musician and singer-songwriter who could play Jonathan Jackson’s younger brother on “Nashville.” Cosmo’s parents are breaking up, they have no money, and he’s moved from Catholic school to public school. He gets picked on, all that, but then sees a beautiful girl named Raphina (Lucy Boynton), and decides to start a band.

The band, called Sing Street, fills up fast once Cosmo finds a like minded songwriter in Eamon (played beautifully by Mark McKenna, 19). Cosmo also rates a live at home older brother, a philosopher and late bloomer named Brendan (Jack Reynor) who sees a life for Cosmo he may have already missed.

Unlike the characters in “Once” or “Begin Again,” who are trying to get hit records, the “Sing Street” gang is just trying to survive high school, maybe make a living, and keep going. Because Carney has set the film in the early 80s, he’s able to show the aspirations of making homemade music videos. The Sing Street band is most hilarious as the boys hear new songs on the radio by Hall & Oates or Duran Duran and try to write good copies. They try on one fashion after another trying to find their own identities.

Carney used Gregg Alexander and Danielle Brisebois to write the songs for “Begin Again.” This time, his music comes from another one of my lesser known favorites, Scottish songwriter Gary Clark, known to some from the band Danny Wilson. (He is not to be confused with Texas bluesman Gary Clarke Jr.) His songs are brilliant little pop gems. If you don’t know him, stream or download the album “Meet Danny Wilson” and the hit it spawned, “Mary’s Prayer.” He’s an unsung hero.

At the after party last night, Ferdia and Mark performed three songs from the movie. (Laura Michelle Kelly, star of “Finding Neverland” on Broadway, arrived just in time to catch the act.)

Attention Jimmys Fallon and Kimmel, Conan, Colbert, Kelly and Michael– put these guys on your shows. Republic Records has the soundtrack CD. If they’re smart, they’ll make a whole album with these guys. They’re twice as good as Bieber or any of these pop tarts. And they know their way around a guitar.

“Sing Street” opens this week in NY and, then spreads out in two weeks. Spread the word. Like “Everybody Wants Some!!” this a reason to get excited about movies.

David Gest– Michael Jackson’s Best Friend, Liza Minnelli’s Ex, Dead at 62

0

A shady character who was infamous for staging big music shows, David Gest has died at age 62. He was infamous for being Michael Jackson’s best friend in the 90s, and for marrying– albeit briefly– Liza Minnelli. He was also infamous for having a shrine to Shirley Temple in his bedroom.

Gest was a very strange guy. In the music business, he’d been publicist for Hi Records in Memphis where he represented singers Al Green and Ann Peebles.

I used to write about David Gest because he ran a phony foundation called the American Cinema Awards. He often listed dead people as officers of the foundation and took their salaries.

Gest, according to reports from London, was found dead this morning in London at the Four Seasons hotel in Canary Wharf. He was going to start a music tour this summer called “David Gest is Not Dead.”

What a character! Many older entertainers will swear by him because he always got them gigs. Condolences to them. Gest always peppered his parties with really old time actors from Hollywood. I still remember sitting with Liz Smith and Dominick Dunne at Gest’s ill fated wedding to Liza. Dominick kept getting up and going over to the other side of the room to see who was there. He’d come back and say things like “Ann Blythe is still alive!”

Gest did succeed at putting on Michael Jackson’s famous anniversary shows in September 2001 at Madison Square Garden; that was his crowning achievement. It was there that he really met Liza, who didn’t seem understand that Gest was gay. Their year long marriage in 2002-2003 was quite a scandal and ended with lawsuits and domestic violence.

Here’s what I wrote on July 26, 2003:

The word is out: Liza Minnelli and David Gest are over. After a year and four months. Give or take. Some might say the marriage had no foundation. But Gest also has no foundation now.

For years Gest ran something called the American Cinema Foundation. It wasn’t clear what it did, but for a long time Gest collected a tax-free fee from the charity in the neighborhood of $150,000. He also listed quite sincerely dead former studio head Leo Jaffe as its president.

When this column and thesmokinggun.com caught Gest in these actions, he eventually let Jaffe go. But the foundation itself remained. Now, according to its latest tax return, American Cinema Foundation has ceased operations.

According to its federal tax filing, ACF finished the 2002 fiscal year with $429 in revenues. But it also had a $31,319 deficit. Gest for some reason gave $7,500 to New York University, which is sort of like giving sand to the Arabs or water to aquariums. Well, you pick the metaphor. NYU is so rich they’ve swallowed Greenwich Village whole. They don’t need David Gest’s tax-free money.

Earlier this year Gest announced that he was working with longtime pal Michael Jackson on a documentary about the singer’s life. But that never happened. Additionally, Gest took over management of Minnelli’s career, which resulted in more weird publicity than revenues. Her concert album on J Records was a rare dud for the label.

What will Gest do now that Minnelli has evidently figured a bunch of things out? One can only imagine. He still has his rumored collection of Shirley Temple memorabilia. Maybe he can sell that for income. But I do think his Jacko-Liza connection has been broken for good. Jackson’s new handlers certainly won’t let him muscle back into any of the singer’s business. And it’s likely that Minnelli’s friends will encourage her to find a new manager herself.

The big question now is the pre-nup. Oh, Liza, let’s hope you made him sign one!
