Michael Jackson’s Killer, Dr. Conrad Murray, “Publishes” E Book And No One Buys It

0

Someone asked me today if the “book” written by Dr. Conrad Murray, the man who killed Michael Jackson, had been published.

I had to look on Amazon.

It does seem like Murray released his e book “This Is It! The Secret Lives of Dr. Conrad Murray and Michael Jackson” on July 26th.

The public has responded with a gigantic Yawn. “Secret Lives” is currently number 25,408 on amazon.com, on their paid Kindle chart.

I didn’t download it, and won’t pay for it. I guess hardly anyone else will, either.

If you know anyone who actually did do that, ask them to email me at showbiz411@gmail.com

It really doesn’t matter what Murray writes. He was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter. He should be in jail still, but was released because of overcrowding. His medical license has been suspended or revoked in the states where he practiced. The book will never see hardcover.

Marvin Gaye’s Co-Writer Sues Ed Sheeran: “Thinking Out Loud” is “Let’s Get it On” (No Kidding)

0

Ed Sheeran is finally being sued over “Thinking Out Loud.” From the moment I heard that song, I said it was “Let’s Get it On” by Marvin Gaye. Now the estate of Gaye’s co-writer and producer Ed Townsend is suing Sheeran over the song. It’s about time.

According to Reuters, the lawsuit says: “The Defendants copied the ‘heart’ of ‘Let’s’ and repeated it continuously throughout ‘Thinking,'” the lawsuit said. “The melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic compositions of ‘Thinking’ are substantially and/or strikingly similar to the drum composition of ‘Let’s.'”

I’m surprised there isn’t more of this, frankly. Bruno Mars’s “Locked out of Heaven” and Nico and Vinz’s “Am I Wrong” each sound like Sting songs so much that when they start playing on the radio, that’s what you think they are. The pop music world is now riddled with copies, songs that steal a “vibe” and so on of original hits. When you hear an actually good new song, you’re surprised someone thought of it.

“Thinking Out Loud” has annoyed me from Day 1. Good luck to Townsend’s heirs. By the way, I just read that Townsend, who died in 2003, earned a Purple Heart during the Korean War. Just sayin’…

Also, if you’re young, or you’ve forgotten, go listen to Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get it On” and “What’s Going On” albums. They are breathtaking. I also really love “Here My Dear,” which was his divorce pay off album to Anna Gordy. He was such a genius.

TV: “Big Bang Theory” Could Go Past 10 Seasons, Says “Howard” aka Simon Helberg

0

Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant are the big names in Paramount’s “Florence Foster Jenkins,” opening Friday to raves and Oscar buzz.

But the other Big Name is from the Big Bang Theory– Simon Helberg, aka Howard, one of the beloved nerds of the CBS hit sitcom. At last night’s premiere of “Florence Foster Jenkins.” Helberg was watching the clock. He was scheduled to fly out of New York at 3:45 am to be in Los Angeles this morning. The 10th season of “Big Bang Theory” is about to commence.

Is there an 11th season for the show? “I suppose there is,” he said. “A lot of people will come back and want to come back if asked,” he said. “And I would be one of them.”

Helberg is the breakout star of “FFJ” — directed to perfection by Stephen Frears— as he plays piano in the film himself, in all his scenes. Nothing is dubbed. Did he have real classical training? “I played in rock bands and popular music,” he said with a self-effacing shrug. “And I kind transitioned that to classical opera.”

He can take more credit than that. Helberg is totally convincing as Meryl Streep’s accompanist — or rather Florence’s. Was he intimidated by being in so many scenes with the World’s Greatest Actress? “I was before I met her,” he told me. “And then you realize how normal she is.”

The “Florence Foster Jenkins” premiere was one of the more laid back I’ve been to in quite a while. Streep and husband Don Gummer mixed and mingled at Brasserie 8 1/2 with everyone, and Meryl was gracious enough to take those annoying selfies everyone wants. She was especially happy to see old friends like one time drama school roommate John Rothman (who’s starring in Tig Notaro‘s Amazon series “One Mississippi”) and the great Carmen DeLavallade (widow of the famed Geoffrey Holder).

I was happy to see Meryl’s sister in law, Emmy winning actress Maeve Kinkead, who played Vanessa Chamberlain on “The Guiding Light” for nigh on 30 years. Kinkead tells me her first hook of poetry is coming from this January from the prestigious Barrow Street Press. It’s called “A Dangling House” and you can read one of the poems here. As she was finishing her run on “Guiding Light,” Maeve graduated from the Warren Wilson MFA Program for Writers with a degree in Poetry in 2008. This is quite an accomplishment. Bravo!

Also at the “FFJ” premiere: Nina Arianda, hilarious in the film, as always, plus “Crash” director Paul Haggis, and a rare sighting of Cars leader Ric Ocasek and his model wife Paulina Porizkova. They’ve been married since 1989– can you believe it? She must have been just what he needed!

All Female “Oceans” Movie: Elizabeth Banks Out, Anne Hathaway In, Along with Rihanna, And Chinese Rapper Awkwafina

0

I told you a few weeks ago that director Gary Ross had secured Elizabeth Banks for his all female “Oceans” heist movie. Now there are reports that Anne Hathaway is in, which means Banks is out as a member of the pack. Hmmm…Hollywood deals are crazy no?

I also told you that Mindy Kaling was in, which is true as well as Helena Bonham Carter. Rihanna, the pop star, is also in. So is a woman named Awkwafina, aka Nora Lum, a Chinese actress who was in “Neighbors 2.” I’m sure she’s lovely, but you’re going to see more and more relatively unknown (to Americans) Chinese and Asian actresses in these big studio movies. The studios are pitching now directly to the Chinese audience in China, where box office receipts are coveted.

Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett still lead “Oceans 8” which will film after Blanchett finishes a short Broadway run this winter. The big question is: will George Clooney have a cameo? My guess is: absolutely. And Brad Pitt might not be far behind.

Clint Eastwood’s Actress Daughter Alison Eastwood to Direct Indie Film “Dog Walker”

0

alisonEXCLUSIVE Clint Eastwood’s kids are always buzzing around.

Scott is in “Suicide Squad” has become a hot commodity in films in the last year. Son Kyle is a jazz composer who’s contributed soundtracks to Clint’s movies and made his own recordings.

Alison Eastwood has always been an actress. She’s also directed two features. Now I’m told Alison will direct an indie called “Dog Walker,” written by Sarah Rothschild.

“Dog Walker” is about Olivia, who’s 25 and has just broken up with her boyfriend. To keep an eye on AJ and his new live in girlfriend, Olivia gets a job as their dog walker. She’s determined to bust up the relationship.

Let’s hope it’s funny, and the dogs are cute. Filming is set for early next year in Atlanta.

Mel Gibson’s “Blood Father” Will Get Small Release, Described as “Trash” by Critics

0

Mel Gibson’s big comeback movie? “Blood Father” will get a small release this Friday, then disappear.

From Cannes, the Hollywood Reporter reviewer said: “A serviceable piece of B-movie entertainment without an ounce of originality.”

Owen Glieberman in Variety conceded it was “trash.”

“Blood Father” so far has three theater locations on Moviefone. One of them is in rural Oklahoma. It’s also opening in Van Nuys, California. Then it goes to VOD.

Gibson thinks he’s staging a Renaissance in Hollywood. Later this fall, “Hacksaw Ridge,” which he directed, will get pushed for awards. Good luck with that. Gibson is a racist, an anti-Semite, and a lot of other bad things. He has not apologized for his comments about Jews or the Holocaust.

Gibson still has a not for profit foundation called the AP Reilly Foundation, with assets of $70 million, that supports his privately built church in Agoura Hills, Malibu. That church, Holy Family, is not part of the archdiocese. They do not believe in the Pope or modern Catholic values. They deny the Holocaust. Mel’s father, Hutton Gibson, is alive somewhere, and has written extensively against the Catholic church and for Neo Nazi publications.

See this Article from The Atlantic. And let’s not even get into all that stuff with girlfriend Oksana, the divorce from wife Robin, and so on. Did someone say Sugar Tits?

You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig. And that’s not Kosher.

UPDATE: Melania Trump’s Speechwriter Meredith McIver Speaks, She Had Never Had a Twitter Account

0

EXCLUSIVE UPDATE

Here’s a little follow up on the Mystery of Meredith McIver.

She IS real. I’ve just spoken to her at the Trump Organization. She’s quite nice and sane despite what’s going on on social media.

She tells me she never had a Twitter account. That’s why the account is gone. “I’ve never had Twitter or Facebook,” she says.

There is no person named Jonathan Elwood, who was busy DM Tweeting me in the middle of the night. So much for that. People have a lot of time on their hands.

Whatever you think of Donald Trump, I always found the people at the Trump Organization to be helpful, professional and pleasant. Back in the 90s, when Donald, Ivana and Marla Maples were regularly in the press, I could always count on the great Norma Foerderer, Donald’s right hand person, to handle all the crazy stuff with aplomb.

Anyway, case closed on Meredith McIver. She made a mistake with the speech. Life goes on.

New York Film Festival Main Slate Includes Jim Jarmusch’s “Paterson” and Kenneth Lonergan’s “Manchester by the Sea”

0

The New York Film Festival main slate is out. We already knew about the opening, closing and centerpiece films. Among the others featured are Jim Jarmsuch’s “Paterson” and Kenneth Lonergan’s “Manchester by the Sea.”

The list is good, but some of these films will have played at Cannes, Venice, Telluride and Toronto. There’s a scarcity of good festival films this year, that’s for sure. It doesn’t help that Warren Beatty isn’t showing “Rules Don’t Apply.”

BUT: There’s good money riding on Martin Scorsese showing “Silence” as the surprise screening. He did it a few years ago with “Hugo.” He told me he’s scoring in October, but Scorsese could use temp music if the picture is ready. That would be exciting.

Cher on “Witches of Eastwick” Director George Miller: “He wanted to cut my head off”

0

Cher says director George Miller (Mad Max) did not want her in The Witches of Eastwick with Jack Nicholson, Angelica Huston and Michelle Pfeiffer. In the new CAA book “Powerhouse,” by James Andrew Miller, Cher pulls no punches.

“George Miller didn’t want me in any way, and wanted to cut my head off. Every time they would call to say, “George is really excited about you being in this film,” and blah blah blah, I would call him and he would say, “I really don’t want you in this film, but I’m being forced into it now,” and I said, “You know what, dude, fuck you. You’re not finding me under a rock, I’ve already been nominated for Academy Awards.”

“He just hated me so, but Ronnie [Ron Meyers, co-chief of CAA] just kept pushing and pushing, telling me it was going to work out. He probably had to strangle George to get me on that set, but I never heard him raise his voice. And it was such a strange thing. Ronnie was right. The moment we started working, he forgot all the horrible things he said about me and we got along just beautifully. I had such a good time on that movie in certain ways— in other ways, no— but in many ways, it was a lot of fun.”

David Letterman on Leaving CBS: Declined to Hear Offers from “60 Minutes” and CBS Radio

0

Back in 2013, CBS announced that David Letterman’s contract had been extended for two years.

But in the book “Powerhouse” by James Andrew Miller, Letterman says of his decision to retire:

The last contract was for only a year. I was frightened then that I might not even be able to make it through the year. Everything had stopped being what it was and I didn’t want to be the last old guy in late night. And this had been an ongoing conversation. Every time I saw Les, I would say, “You know, Les,” I said, “I’m ready to go any time you need me to go.” And he said, “Everything’s fine. Don’t worry about it. Everything’s fine.” And then when Jay retired, I just thought, Oh, yeah. I’m going to be the last old guy. So that was as meaningful to me as anything else. I just thought, I can’t be the old guy trying to keep up with the kids on late night.

Lee Gabler, Letterman’s agent at CAA, says in the book that “60 Minutes” was interested in Letterman. (He doesn’t say it, but you could see Dave as the Andy Rooney.)

When the Late Show ended, I sat down with Dave and said, “What do you want to do?” And he said, “I don’t know,” and I said, “Well, why don’t we sit down with CBS and come up with a post-term deal?” And 60 Minutes was interested in making a deal with him. Sunday Morning was interested in making a deal. CBS Radio wanted to make a deal. There was conversation about a lecture tour in some kind of a format that he would feel comfortable with, but it turned out he really didn’t want to do anything at that point.

Instead, Dave grew a beard.
