Review: Wes Anderson is Barking Up the Right Tree with Winning, Whimsical “Isle of Dogs”

0

“Isle Of Dogs,” say it fast and yes, it does sound like “I love dogs.” That’s what the brilliant filmmaker Wes Anderson goes for and beyond delivers on. Anderson has delved into stop motion animation before with his “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” but this time Anderson hits a canine grand slam with this latest wacky and whimsical, singularly unique and delightful film.

Written by Anderson, Roman Coppola, Jason Schwartzman and Kunichi Nomura, “Isle” has been years in the making and is an ode to the director’s love of Japanese cinema. This doggie saga is set in futuristic Japan where a dog flu epidemic in the fictional city of Megaski which turns man’s best friend into his worst enemy. The evil mayor (voiced by Nomura) banishes all dogs to ‘Trash Island,’ where they are forced to live among the rubbish. It’s there that we meet the five main dog characters, Rex (Edward Norton), Duke, (Jeff Goldblum), Boss (Bill Murray), King (Bob Balaban) and the de-facto leader and tough as nails stray Chief (Bryan Cranston) who warns all, “I bite.”

The evil mayor’s innocent ward Atari (Koyu Rankin), searches for his beloved pooch and winds up on the putrid island. Add to that, Scarlett Johansson’s gorgeous show dog, human activist (Greta Gerwig) plus a scene stealing oracle pug (Tilda Swinton) and might be a cannibal aboriginal dog (Harvey Keitel) as well as Liev Schrieber, Courtney B. Vance and even Yoko Ono; well the casting is just perfect. The dogs take on human characteristics, which makes them off the chart adorable and funny, clever and sarcastic and wholly appealing.

Oscar winner composer Alexandre Desplat, who just won the award for “The Shape Of Water,” as well for Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” composes his music magic once again. The themes of desperation, sadness and despotism are discussed throughout the film, which makes this story genuinely poignant. Kids will appreciate the animation and wackiness of it all because Anderson wisely does not foray into too cutesiness territory. He always tows the line so that adults will be drawn to the droll sly humor and mega charm of this truly technical and artistic marvel.

“Isle of Dogs” opens in limited release on March 23rd.

Box Office: “Wrinkle in Time” Narrowly Beats “Black Panther” with Middling $10 Mil Friday

0

“A Wrinkle in Time” narrowly took the number 1 spot Friday night from “Black Panther.”

“Wrinkle” scored $10.2 million. “Panther” came close, with $9.972 million. Of course, “Panther” also crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide on Friday.

“Wrinkle” should do a $30 million weekend depending on Saturday and Sunday numbers. Both movies come from Disney, so it’s a win-win for them. But it’s a middling debut for “Wrinkle,” with millions spent on promotion and not so great reviews.

Oscar winner “The Shape of Water” posted $620,000 on Friday night. It will cross $60 million over the weekend.

Hit Record: Listen to Sting and Shaggy’s Earwig of a Catchy New Single, “Morning is Coming”

0

Sting’s new single with Shaggy called “Morning is Coming”– it’s an earwig of a catchy song. The new Sting album, with Shaggy, comes April 20th and is called 44/876. You can pre-order it here.

“Morning is Coming” is just a taste of what else is on the album. I heard some songs from it back in January that were quite impressive. Good news.

Box Office: “Wrinkle in Time” Makes Disappointing $1.3 Mil in Thursday Previews

0

Despite a huge promotional push, things like so-so for Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time.”

Last night Thursday previews brought in $1.3 million. That’s a disappointing number but not surprising considering the negative reviews– the movie has a 45 on Rotten Tomatoes.

Box office experts are comparing “Wrinkle”‘s performance last night to last May’s “Alice throughthe Looking Glass.” That one finished with $26.9 million on a holiday opening weekend (Memorial Day).

But the promo push here is HUGE– so on Saturday, at least, the numbers should be big for parents taking young girls. We’ll wait and see.

Madonna’s Oscar Party: Adele Was Photo Shy, Gucci Paid for It, French Oscar Nominee Shot It

0

Here’s a little more we’ve gleaned about Madonna’s post-Oscar party held at manager Guy Oseary’s house. (You didn’t think Madonna would have all these people in her house, did ya?)

For one thing, according to Oseary’s Instagram page, Gucci has been paying for the party for 11 years. Why? Who knows?

Adele may have been there but stayed out of the group selfies. I can tell you that Adele has been living in the Hollywood Hills for the last year with husband Simon Konecki and their son. She made gazillions from the “25” album and tour. Plus — “it’s warm and sunny in LA,” says an insider. But Adele didn’t go to Madonna’s party. Simon did. In a post about the party, Oseary wrote: “We miss Simon’s wife.” I’ll bet.

Oscar nominated filmmaker and artist JR shot the guests at the party. They included Sam Rockwell, Greta Gerwig and so on. JR did NOT go to Vanity Fair’s party because he wasn’t invited. If and he and Agnes Varda had won, they could have attended it. But they lost. Varda, I’m sure, went home or to dinner. She’s 89.

TV Ratings: Indie Spirit Awards Garner Just 95,000 Viewers, Fail to Make Saturday’s Top 150 Cable Shows

0

We got all excited about the Oscars having their worst ratings ever. But really– it was 25 million people. That’s a lot any way you cut it.

But on Saturday afternoon at 5pm, we had the Independent Spirit Awards on cable’s IFC Channel. They had most of the same stars, just without the songs. The Spirit Awards did feature the hilarious Nick Kroll and John Mulaney.

So who was watching? Basically, no one. According to showbuzzdaily.com, the Indie Spirit Awards didn’t finish in the top 150 cable shows for Saturday. The 150th show on the showbuzz list, “Sports Center Morning” on ESPN2, had 134,000 viewers.

As for the Spirit Awards, the 5pm broadcast had just 95,000 viewers. The rebroadcast at 10pm brought in just 63,000 people. I think more people watch the Yule log, or the test pattern. The worst part of the news is that for the live show, only 21,000 were in the key demo. At 10pm, it was about the same with 23,000.

This year, the Spirit Awards counted American Airlines, IFC, Jeep, Fiji Water and Piaget watches were the top sponsors. But I’m told that Piaget had actually scaled down from 2017 and may leave altogether. Film Independent may have trouble keeping sponsors for a show with no audience.

TV: “Days of our Lives” Renewed for 79th Season After Near Death Ratings Almost Killed It

0

Fans of NBC’s “Days of our Lives” can breathe a sigh of relief. NBC has renewed the show for another season after 54 years of sturm und drang, also kidnappings, amnesia, paralysis and demonic possession.

“Days” was pretty much going down the drain until about six months ago when headwriter Ron Carlivati– ex of General Hospital and One Life to Live– took over. He immediately resuscitated a dead character (killed on screen) and brought back many favorite actors. Give the audience what they want– he did the same thing at General Hospital. It always works.

Meantime, Days’ most tenured actress, Susan Seaforth Hayes (she’s been on there since 1921) and her husband, Bill Hayes, will get Lifetime Achievement Awards at the Daytime Emmys. Seriously, they deserve it. They were on the cover of Time magazine in the 1970s!

Update: Rick Ross — Rapper with a Long Rap Sheet– is Breathing Again, and Drinking $30 Rose

0

Rapper Rick Ross is breathing again. He’s posted a photo of himself to Instagram, of course. After being placed on a breathing tube, the indefatigable subject of many arrests is now drinking something called Luc Belaire Rare Rose. It costs $30.

Whatever put Ross in the hospital is unclear, and there was evidently some fear he wasn’t going to make it. That would have been…news, I guess.

Ross is famous for committing violent crimes and breaking the law. In 2015 he was arrested for kidnapping, aggravated assault, and aggravated battery.

In 2010, Ross had to pay $300,000 to a blogger he didn’t like for allowing his posse to beat the guy up.

It’s unclear who prescribed the rose.

Ain’t nothing like home 🙏🏼. I love y’all – WLR

UK Scoop: Oscar Winning “Slumdog Millionaire” Director Danny Boyle to Take on Next James Bond Movie

0

Big news from the UK: the Daily Mail’s premier columnist Baz Bamigboye reports that Oscar winning director Danny Boyle will helm the next James Bond movie. This has been in the air for some time, but Baz has apparently nailed it down in the Bond universe. He says producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson and star Daniel Craig are “willing” this into existence.

Danny Boyle, of course, is the perfect choice to take over from Sam Mendes. He has a long list of smart hits. “Slumdog Millionaire” is his Oscar peak, but if you look at “127 Hours,” Boyle knows how to make a tense action movie. His other hits include “Trainspotting,” “28 Days Later,” and “A Life Less Ordinary.”

Bond 25 won’t come right away, Baz says. First comes a musical project with Richard Curtis called “All You Need is Love” that will be a take on the Beatles. Baz broke that story, too.

Media: Rachel Maddow Trounces Sean Hannity for Third Night in a Row, Goes for Fourth Tonight

0

Rachel Maddow scored a hat trick last night. She beat Sean Hannity for the third night in a row.

Maddow had 2.8 million viewers. Hannity had 2.6 million. The difference was narrower than it had been Monday and Tuesday, but it was still a win for Maddow.

If Maddow beats Hannity tonight, it will be a sweet moment for the MSNBC anchor. But it’s also based on hard work. Maddow addresses the actual news– the real news– every night. Hannity avoids it like the plague, choosing to divert Fox News viewers to some “other world” in which Donald Trump is a hero. It’s hard to know if Fox News viewers know about Stormy Daniels, Michael Cohen, or a dozen other things.
