Drew Barrymore, Mired in Low Ratings, Throws Woody Allen Under the Bus But It Doesn’t Work

0

“The Drew Barrymore Show” has no ratings. CBS is stuck with it. The talk show cannot rise beyond 500,000 viewers average per episode. Contrast Kelly Clarkson, with 800,000. Or “Live with Kelly and Ryan” at 1.8 million.

What to do? Why not throw Woody Allen under the bus? Drew was part of the ensemble cast in Woody’s terrific “Everyone Says I Love You” musical in 1996. Woody was very hot coming off “Bullets Over Broadway” and “Mighty Aphrodite.” Drew was lucky to be cast in a movie with Julia Roberts and Goldie Hawn, frankly.

She said on her show that: “There was no higher career calling card [at the time] than to work with Woody Allen.” Dianne Wiest had just won Best Supporting Actress for “Bullets” and Mira Sorvino won for “Mighty Aphrodite.” Again, Drew was lucky to be cast in one of his movies.

But now of course, it’s convenient to slag Woody. So Drew brought on Mia Farrow’s hypnotised adopted daughter Dylan Farrow to make accusations and promote the “Allen v. Farrow” documentary  for a possible Emmy Award. There was no one to defend Woody or dispute Dylan’s allegations, which have been drummed into her for 25 years by Mia Farrow.

What they didn’t discuss: that Dylan’s uncle, John Farrow, Mia’s brother, just spent 7 years in prison for molesting two little boys and destroying their lives.

Drew, of course, didn’t share about the crappy way she’s treated her own mother, Jaid Barrymore, all these years.

CBS Syndication is pushing the Drew show hard. They had her as a guest on Rachael Ray this week, and a host on CBS This Morning. They also had Oprah Winfrey, who’s a CBS stockholder, include her in one of her shows. But nothing helps Drew’s ratings. She’s insipid, shallow and disingenuous. The audience, apparently gets that.

Glittering Art World Crowd Turns Out for In-Person Don Hershman Show at Salomon Arts Gallery

0

Artist Don Hershman debuted his latest collection of original pieces, as part of a retrospective series inspired by the late Victor Arimondi.  In the spring show, “Donald and Victor: Under The Influence,” the inventive artist embodied his visceral need to pursue interests and creative expressions as he paid a loving tribute to his former partner who succumbed to AIDS in 2001. Hershman’s paintings recognizes the unique attributes of Arimondi’s work, featuring a display that is compassionate and reflective of our modern times.

The opening reception took place at Salomon Arts Gallery in Tribeca. Notable attendees included: Artist Don Hershman, Gallery owners Gigi and Rodrigo Salomon, Jorge Alzate, Adam Stoltman, Edwina Sandys, Anthony Haden-Guest, philanthropist Jean Shafiroff, Carmen D’Alessio, Janik Aleksander, Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin, Dr. Robi Ludwig, Mindie Barnett, Moises Castano, Lydia Duanmu, Sergio Orozco, Christopher Noto, Minnie Osmena, Mathieu Spannagel, Hayley Henning, and Adele Nino. Metropolitan opera singer Alexandria Hrabova performed at the end of the evening.

The exhibit runs through May 14 – June 3, 2021, viewing on Wednesdays through Saturdays 2pm – 6pm or by appointment.

On May 22, 2021 at 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm, there will be an Art Talk with guest speaker Adam Stoltman, a former New York Times and Time, Inc., photography editor, will be in conversation with Hershman and share remarks on the legacy of Arimondi’s work.

Arimondi was a famed Italian American model and art photographer whose unique eye and sensuous style captivated the world.  At the time of his death, Hershman inherited his estate, including his vast collection of photography and art.

“During our 17 years together Victor steadfastly guided and molded me, and after his sudden death in 2001 I became solidly dedicated to my art, his presence more powerful than ever – a driving force to create something that is no longer a choice for me, but a necessity,” says Hershman. “This show at the Salomon Gallery brings mine and Victor’s work full circle with 20 new selected paintings from 2019 to 2021, along with a carefully curated selection of 38 photographs, taken between 1972 and 2001, four of which I interpreted into my own paintings, called the D & V Series.”

The exhibit serves as a love letter to a luminary who graced the pages of fashion magazines including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Esquire, and appeared on the runway for many top designers, predominantly Valentino and Cerruti. Arimondi’s determination to turn the camera lens from his face onto the world he saw before him led to famously shooting the likes of Grace Jones, Liv Ullman, and Norman Mailer, as well as several portraits of male nudes captured during the pre-AIDS culture of the early 1980s.

He also notably focused imagery of the plight of the homeless of San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood suffering during the height of the AIDS epidemic. In his words, “Since I posed in front of the camera for so many years, my experience with talented photographers made me realize a way to express my inner world.”

Exclusive: Jennifer Hudson Won’t Be in “Sex and the City” Reboot But She Did Write an Original Song for Aretha Franklin Movie

0

EXCLUSIVE

Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson will not be in the HBO Max reboot of “Sex and the City.”  She was featured in the 2008 feature film, so when the producers said they were adding three Black women to the new series, it seemed like a natural idea to bring back her character, Louise. What a great idea, right?

But it’s not happening. Maybe Sarah Jessica Parker and Michael Patrick King thought JHud was too big a star to come to the small screen, even streaming, for an appearance. Well, that’s their loss.

Jennifer IS too big a star, actually. We’re waiting her big August premiere as Aretha Franklin in “Respect.” And the big news from that movie is Ms. Hudson herself co-wrote a new song and sings it over the closing credits. This will be her shot at Best Song for the Academy Awards. So she may get two Oscar nominations, one for the song and for the performance. I sort of expect JHud to win the Oscar next winter.

JHud has already sung an Oscar nominated song, you may recall. That was “I’ll Fight” written by Diane Warren for the documentary “RBG” about Ruth Bader Ginsburg. If she’s nominated for the new song, she’ll likely be competing with Warren this time!

More on Jennifer’s “Respect” song soon…

RIP Charles Grodin, Great Comic Actor, Racounteur, Talk Show Host, Star of “The Heartbreak Kid,” “Midnight Run”

Charles Grodin has passed away, sadly. The 86 year old star was a great character actor, some time leading man, writer, raconteur, talk show host. He was also great pals with Regis Philbin and David Letterman off screen. They often hung out together and enjoyed each other’s company.

Chuck Grodin burst on the scene in 1972 as the off beat star of Neil Simon and Nora Ephron’s comedy classic, “The Heartbreak Kid.” He got a Golden Globe nomination for that role. Grodin has no other real awards, but he never went after them. He wasn’t that kind of guy.

Grodin’s turn with Dyan Cannon in Warren Beatty’s “Heaven Can Wait,” written by Buck Henry, from 1978, is award winning, however. The two of them should have won Oscars. They’re just hysterical.  Grodin co-starred with Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase in “Seems Like Old Times,” with Robert DeNiro in “Midnight Run,” and two big back to back hits with Beethoven the dog as the human star of the movies.

On Broadway, Grodin was nominated for a Drama Desk Award in 1975 for “Same Time, Next Year.” He appeared in six Broadway productions but “Same Time, Next Year” was his big hit with a three year run. Ellen Burstyn was his co-star in that play, winning the Tony and Drama Desk Award. The production really launched them both.

Other projects included several books, a talk show, radio show, and a variety of situations that showcased his humorous and erudite personality. He wasn’t a curmudgeon but he liked to play an oddball character on Letterman’s talk show. Dave loved it, and Grodin was a refreshing challenge to the notion of a Hollywood star. And he was a star.

Paul McCartney Documentary Dropping on Hulu Six Weeks Before Beatles Doc from Peter Jackson

0

We’ve been waiting a year for Peter Jackson’s documentary about the making of the Beatles “Let it Be.” It’s set for the last week of August, a year and some months after the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ technical last release but second to last album.

In the meantime, Hulu has just announced they’re dropping their own Paul McCartney documentary series on July 16th. It kind of sets up the Beatles doc, no? I don’t think it undercuts it, but it’s curious that McCartney commissioned a doc, with Rick Rubin of all people, to precede the “Get Back” movie.

McCartney already had a documentary commissioned and almost made — it was filmed — with director Paul Haggis. But Haggis is now involved in a complicated rape accusation and trial (that I’m sorry, I don’t believe, I know it’s not PC, but it doesn’t fit his profile).  The Haggis film was shelved, the footage wasn’t even used for the Rubin project. Hopefully one day we’ll see it.

I’m looking forward to this six part Rubin series called “3, 2, 1.”  McCartney, like every genius, is quite complex. But he’s even more so. The range of his career will be studied for a long time. McCartney himself is not good at self-evaluation, although we will see his $100 autobiography this fall. I hope Rubin can get to the heart of it. Then of course, they could turn the camera on him. That’s another story!

John Mulaney Sells Out 9 Shows in Three Hours But Don’t Worry More Will Be Scheduled

0

Scandal sells.

John Mulaney sold all 9 of his new shows at New York’s City Winery in three hours. The demand was so high it almost collapsed the ticketing system.

But don’t worry, I can tell you exclusively there will be more shows there. Mulaney and City Winery have found a formula that works. And wait til capacity can be expanded!

Mulaney has turned chaos into creation, lemons into lemonade, scandal into socko business. Divorce, rehab, affairs, more rehab. What will be revealed next week? Mulaney will leak something juicy to Page Six, trust me. Most recently is the ex-wife’s rehab.

Next scandal? Custody fight over the French bulldog, Petunia. Stay tuned…

Watch the Trailer for “Dear Evan Hansen” Starring Ben Platt, in Theaters When Broadway Show Re-opens in September

0

The Tony winning Broadway hit, “Dear Evan Hansen” is a movie, and it opens in theaters on September 24th. That’s around the same time the live stage show returns to Broadway. How will that work? Will the movie help the Broadway production? We’ll find out.

“Dear Evan Hansen” features its original star, Ben Platt, but replaces the two key female roles with Hollywood heavyweights Julianne Moore and Amy Adams. Marc Platt is the main producer, he’s Ben’s dad, and also produced “La La Land,” which also had music from Ben Pasek and Justin Paul. The key here is to have a short last name that starts with a P. (Putin doesn’t work!)

Amandla Stenberg, from “The Hate U Give,” is also featured.

Naomi Campbell, 50, Has A Baby Girl: Super Model, Podcaster Extraordinaire Declares: “There is No Greater Love”

0

Super model Naomi Campbell has a baby. She announced the news on Twitter. Congrats, Naomi! Naomi says “A beautiful little blessing has chosen me to be her mother.” (The father and whole story are yet to be revealed.)

The 50 year podcaster extraordinaire will give that baby the most wonderful life. They’re going to have a great time. And wait til this kid is old enough to know who her mother is. Naomi is one of the great creations of the Universe, not only beautiful but free spirited, brilliant, and the original disrupter!

Review: Zack Snyder’s “Army of the Dead” is a Zombie Movie for Everyone But Sheryl Crow, She Wouldn’t Let Him Use a Song

0

keep refreshing…

I just came back from seeing Zack Snyder’s terrific “Army of the Dead.” I’m not an expert on zombie films. This is one is a zombie-heist film. It runs almost two hours 20 minutes. The time flies by. Snyder’s pacing and characters are fun and fresh, the movie is funny (and a little violent). Think of “Ocean’s 8” with zombies. The cinematography — all done by Snyder– is award worthy. There’s a healthy dose of Wagner’s “Gotterdamerung” opera, too, which made me smile.

At the Paris Theater, where you must see “Army of the Dead” starting Friday– or wherever Netflix plays it because it deserves to be seen on a big screen, Snyder and his producer wife Deb, did a Q&A with TikTok influencer Grace Randolph after the press screening. We learned that the movie was too bawdy for Sheryl Crow. She wouldn’t let the Snyders use her song “Leaving Las Vegas” on the soundtrack, Big mistake, Sheryl. It would have been perfect.

The cast is top notch, loose as a goose and obviously enjoying themselves. It’s the opposite of Snyder’s DC Comic movies for Warner Bros which always feel constricted. Here the ebullience is organic. Even when zombies are trying to bite the non zombies and blood is spurting. Snyder treads a nice line between serious and camp.

The actors: Tig Notaro steals the show as a wise cracking helicopter pilot. Even the Snyders admitted to liking her character the best. But you will be impressed with everyone starting with Dave Bautista as the leader of a gang of would be thieves who are paid to break into the now-walled city of Las Vegas which has become infested with the walking dead. British actress Ella Purnell is sensational as his plucky daughter. I really liked Omari Hardwick as one of Bautista’s gang, and German actor/ director Matthias Schweighofer as Dieter, specialist safe cracker.

Schweighofer was such a hit that he immediately made a prequel to the film, which Netflix will release later this summer, about his character. It’s mostly in English but a little German and French. There’s also a Netflix animated series based on “Army of the Dead” coming this summer. Deb Snyder also told me they know exactly how they will make their sequel, even though I questioned how it might be done.

“Army of the Dead” follows Snyder’s 2004 “Dawn of the Dead,” which was inspired by George Romero’s classic 1978 film of the same name. But this could launch a whole new franchise for Netflix. The Snyders, who suffered a terrible personal loss in 2019, are in love with the execs there and happy to be done with DC/Warner Bros.

“Army of the Dead” starts Friday on Netflix and allegedly somewhere in theaters. If you can, see it there on the big  screen. You will need a big box of popcorn.

John Mulaney Adds 9 New Shows to City Winery Run After Last Week’s Sell Out Despite (or Because of) Tabloid Scandals

0

John Mulaney is either stoking his gossip fire or doing goldmine business because of it.

Either, he sold City Winery last week. So this morning at 9am they’re putting on 9 more shows from May 23-31st. You have to buy the tickets on the City Winery website. My guess is they will sell out instantly beginning at 9am today.

I’m told there’s a chance Mulaney will do a couple more runs like this before the end of June.

Michael Dorf has worked magic at City Winery, opening a beautiful new venue for music, comedy, dining, and wining on the Hudson River at 16th St. It’s really the Miracle on the Hudson.

The new place is gorgeous. The stage repurposed in part from their old home on Varick Street, is generous to music artists. I had a grand time there a couple of weeks ago seeing Patti Smith in her trio.

Mulaney’s show is called “From Scratch.” But it’s anything if not calculated. I don’t know about the publicity, but the stuff that’s come out since he began his run there is extraordinary. First it was his divorce from wife Anna Marie Tendler after six years. Then it was news of his dating actress Olivia Munn. Yesterday someone leaked that Tendler was so shaken by Mulaney’s addictions, rehab, and the affair with Munn that she checked herself into rehab for depression. Can you blame her?

Mulaney went from sympathetic to suspect in ten seconds. He swapped his natty suits for a little boy’s polo shirt and jeans. I do feel like he’s gaming the audience, but what do I know? His fans are legion. He went from biting satirical observations to morose loner. I guess whatever works.

One joke Mulaney certainly can’t tell now: Take my wife, please.
