Hmmm… well, Lorde, the New Zealand singer with one hit, “Royals,” has a new single. “Solar Power” sounds a lot like George Michaels’ “Freedom 90.” And so it goes. It’s Lorde’s first new single since 2017. Her second album, “Melodrama,” was released four years ago. It was a sales bust but was mysteriously revived briefly with a Grammy nomination. Then after a brouhaha with the Grammys, she fled the scene. Lorde, aka Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor, is still just 24 years old. Back in 2017 she canceled tour dates in Israel and made a lot of enemies.
Jackie Collins Gets a Loving Documentary Called “Lady Boss” That Only Does Her a Fraction of Justice
My favorite thing about “Lady Boss,” the documentary about Jackie Collins, is that all her friends think they were her “best friend.” And they were, all of them, even her friends like me who were really just great acquaintances over the decades.
My key memory of Jackie is at the original Spago in February 1990, on Horn Avenue over Sunset Boulevard. I walked in for dinner late and there was Jackie, sitting at the best table, one along the front windows. I’d only known her then maybe a couple of years. She pulled me over and said, “Do you want to meet Gene Kelly? We’ve just come from the People’s Choice Awards.”
Jackie literally plopped me down next to one of the greatest Hollywood stars of all time. I do not remember what I said or he said. I just remember being dazzled. And there was Jackie, beaming, doing something nice just because that’s who she was. And it would be like that between us until her death in 2015. Wherever we were, whatever the occasion, she was always glowing, always making connections, smiling her devilish smile. Like everyone who knew her, I adored her.
I hadn’t even heard of Jackie until 1983 when “Hollywood Wives” became a massive hit. Everyone in publishing knew the story of Jackie and her husband, Oscar Lerman, who was guiding her the way Irving Mansfield had done for Jacqueline Susann. I remember being on the beach on Martha’s Vineyard reading the paperback aloud, it was so much fun! The characters were delicious and everyone wanted to know who was who. The whole idea of Farrah Fawcett as a kleptomaniac was the best. It was a lot more fun that reading “Sophie’s Choice,” I’ll say. Perfect beach book.
Over the years I got to know Jackie and sometime around 1995 I wound up in Jack Romanos’s office at Simon & Schuster doing her a favor. The result was the article at the left. I think Michael Korda was having trouble getting her a new contract, and Jackie was adrift at S&S. She needed a boost to get the publisher to re-up with her. So I volunteered to go on over there and write a piece about her stock being on the rise again. Well, it worked. And that cemented our friendship for the next 20 years.
“Lady Boss” covers her whole life pretty ably. Her daughters, whom I never knew, are terrific. Joan, her sister whom she loved, I do know, and she is disarming as usual. Joan and Jackie really loved each other and were/are great ladies of their generation in Hollywood who I listened to very carefully. They really knew what they were talking about. I was with them together at least twice. Once in 2010 at a swell indoor picnic given by Sandy Gallin, and another time at a Clive Davis dinner. They were Hollywood royalty of my lifetime. Joan remains a friend, and a great lady.
Barbara Davis, looking like an actual Queen, is the best observer of this documentary. She ‘got’ Jackie. Ironically, it’s Barbara’s story with husband Marvin that inspired “Dynasty,” the show that made Joan a living legend. There was never an Alexis in Barbara’s real life. And indeed, Jackie is more like Krystal Carrington, the heroine of the piece. But when Barbara says, “Jackie Collins was here, and then she was gone,” I nodded in agreement. Jackie told no one she was dying, and her death was a shock. A bright light went out everywhere. But at least with “Lady Boss,” the world gets to learn about her legacy of love.
“Lady Boss” plays tomorrow at the Tribeca (Film) Festival and debuts on CNN June 27th. Don’t miss it. And do yourself a favor, read “Hollywood Wives” this summer. It’s still a killer.
(Listen) Mariah Carey Has a Catchy Singalong Hit as Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis’s Featured Singer on New Album
It’s been a long time since Mariah Carey really sang a song on which you could appreciate her voice and singalong. But now she’s the featured singer on “Somewhat Loved (Breaking My Heart Again)” produced and written by Jimmy Jam Harris and Terry Lewis. It’s a one off for their album of songs sung by stars, coming from BMG next month. Mariah should make a whole album with these guys!
“Jam & Lewis, Volume 1,” is scheduled for a July 9th release. The album will also feature songs with Mary J. Blige, Charlie Wilson, Boyz II Men and Morris Day, Jerome Benton and The Roots, Toni Braxton and Heather Headley. I can’t wait to hear all of it!
Mariah just switched management for the umpteenth time. Maybe there was a dispute over going in this direction. But this was the way to go, certainly!
“Sex and the City” Reboot News: All the Men Are Coming Back Including Chris Noth, Evan Handler, Mario Cantone, David Eigenberg
“Sex and the City” fans should be pleased. All the men are returning after all to the reboot.
The HBO Max series will include Chris Noth, Evan Handler, David Eigenberg, plus John Corbett, Mario Cantone, and Willie Garson.
Of course Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon are back, too. Only Kim Cattrall will be absent.
So that’s the whole main cast. Only the great Lynn Cohen, who played Magda, nanny to Miranda (Nixon)’s kid, can’t return. She passed away last February 2020 at age 86.
And Jennifer Hudson isn’t coming back from the first movie. There will be four Black actresses coming in to replace her including Sara Ramirez.
“And Just Like That…” will tell the story of all these people in their 50s. God bless them.
“Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” Adds Second Star of “This is Us” to Cast as Guest with Milo Ventimiglia
Last season, Sterling K. Brown, of ‘This is Us,” played a recurring character on “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”
Next season, Milo Ventimiglia, also of “This is Us,” will appear in a recurring role.
Is there a theme here?
Unlike Sterling, Milo’s time on “This is Us” has been cut way down since they killed off his character, Jack, in their third season. Now he reappears in flashbacks. But once Jack was killed, Milo drew a short straw.
Ventmiglia was featured on “The Gilmore Girls,” written and produced by “Mrs. Maisel” creators Amy Sherman Palladino and Daniel Palladino. So it’s a nice reunion for them.
I don’t see him as a lead for Midge, but maybe he has something to with Suzie. That would be cool.
“Mrs. Maisel” season 4 is late because of the pandemic. A few weeks ago an outdoor shoot in Washington Square Park, as I reported, turned into a melee. It turned out to be a precursor to drugs and violence in the park since then, resulting in curfews and a heavy police presence.
If only they’d listened to us then!
Bruce Springsteen Sells Out All 30 Broadway Shows in an Hour, Will Release New Music Next Week with the Killers
Bruce Springsteen sold out 30 shows on Broadway in about an hour today. All the shows are sold, tickets gone mostly at $700 apiece unless you paid a scalper.
The shows run June 25th through July 17th. Then there’s a month long break, and Bruce returns on August 17th through September 4th.
He has the option, I guess, of adding shows in that month long break. They will all sell out just as quickly.
Bruce said on Sirius XM today that he’s releasing new music with the Killers and Brandon Flowers next week or so. Then in the fall he’s on three tracks with John Mellencamp on his new album.
Then a tour with the E Street Band will commence. They haven’t toured “Letter to You” from last year, or songs from Bruce’s “Western Stars” album.
Springsteen also said on Sirius that there are a lot of surprise albums coming from the vaults.
Plus, I would guess Bruce will appear on Clive Davis’s Central Park concert August 21st. He has no Broadway show scheduled for that night. Convenient!
Professional Criminal Producer Garth Drabinsky Returning to Broadway After Prison Stint with “Paradise Square” Musical
Scott Rudin is gone but guess who’s back? Actual professional criminal GArth Drabinsky.
The Canadian theater producer whose company was called Livent is planning his own revival with “Paradise Square,” a new musical coming to Broadway in February 2022.
Drabinsky is now free to travel back and forth between the US and Canada. But that wasn’t always the case. He served time in Canada for fraud and forgery. The complaints against him in the US were dismissed after 10 years because he’d fulfilled his time in Canada.
So who wouldn’t want Garth Drabinsky back in New York and on Broadway? He can regale us all with tales of his five years in prison. I’d certainly invest with him, wouldn’t you? In November 1998, Livent sought bankruptcy protection in the US and Canada, claiming a debt of $334 million, and securities regulators in both Canada and the US began investigating Livent’s books.
What happened next was a massive legal proceeding you can read all about on Wikipedia. After prison, in 2017, the Ontario Securities Commission permanently banned Drabinsky from becoming a director or officer of any public company in Ontario. The OSC also prohibited him from acting as an investment promoter, and banned him from trading securities (other than as a retail investor, for trades within his RRSP or through a registered dealer for accounts in his name only).
So really, everything should be fine here.
The new musical’s creative team includes director Moisés Kaufman and choreographer Bill T. Jones, with a book by Christina Anderson, Marcus Gardley, Craig Lucas and Larry Kirwan. Graciela Daniele will provide musical staging, in collaboration with Kaufman and Jones.
Just remember: when this goes sideways, you heard it here first. Remember, Bialystock and Bloom’s follow up hit to “Springtime for Hitler” was set in prison.
Pop Charts: Bo Burnham Sacks “In the Heights,” Olivia Rodrigo With Release of Netflix Special Album
For a hot minute yesterday, the soundtrack to “In the Heights” was number 1 a day ahead of its release.
Not anymore.
Bo Burnham, humorist, writer, director, actor has dropped the soundtrack to his popular Netflix special. “Inside Bo Burnham” has sacked “In the Heights” and Olivia Rodrigo’s “Sour” and gone straight to number 1 on iTunes.
And that’s entertainment.
This thing is hot. Hotter than “In the Heights,” which is not selling that well and not picking up big views on YouTube so far.
“Inside” has also gone to Spotify an album. Stay tuned.
Robert Duvall, 90, Has “Apocalypse Now” Reunion with Martin Sheen in “12 Mighty Orphans,” Will Appear in Christian Bale Film
EXCLUSIVE
Robert Duvall is 90 and not stopping any time soon. Tomorrow he opens in “12 Mighty Orphans,” which stars Luke Wilson and Martin Sheen in a really great true story throwback film. I hesitate to say “family film,” but you could actually take your pre-teens and teens to see it and enjoy it, and not be embarrassed. It’s also a film for us “adults” with tremendous performances and filmmaking.
Duvall, who I interviewed last week, gets to have a reunion with his Apocalypse Now co-star Martin Sheen. They didn’t ad-lib their scene, but they were given general direction and put it together. Duvall tells me he and Sheen “hugged and hugged” when they met on set. Don’t forget, Sheen had a heart attack while making the Frances Ford Coppola classic back in 1978. They went through a lot together!
Duvall told me exclusively that his next project would be an appearance in Scott Cooper’s Edgar Allen Poe movie “The Pale Blue Eye” starring Christian Bale. Cooper directed him memorably in the great 2009 film, “Crazy Heart.” He’s also set to be in the next Adam Sandler Netflix film. And that’s not all. More coming this weekend from Duvall right here. PS He won his Oscar for Best Actor in Bruce Beresford’s stunning “Tender Mercies.” If you don’t know it, rent it.
Meantime, do see “12 Mighty Orphans.” Lovely, lovely film. And a big deal for Luke Wilson, who carries it mightily!
All Things Must Pass, but Not George Harrison’s Classic Album: Super 50th Anniversary Edition Coming
We are in the middle of a heavy 50th anniversary year for all the great music of 1971. And for the Beatles, this is most significant.
On August 6th we’ll get a 50th anniversary edition of George Harrison’s amazing and lasting “All Things Must Pass” triple album. The new version will come with 5CDs and 8 LPs. If you get the complete set, they say it comes in a crate! No kidding!
When “All Things Must Pass” was first issued in 1971 it came in what was then a rare box set with 3 LPs. The only other pop album like that was “Jesus Christ Superstar.” We stared at like it was the slab from “2001 A Space Odyssey.” Now it’s coming in a crate!

But dig this. We just had the 50th birthday of Paul McCartney’s “Ram.” Prior to that, Sean Lennon remixed all of his dad’s solo hits in a box set. In July we’re also getting a McCartney doc from Hulu. In August comes the Peter Jackson remix doc of “Let it Be” as a new film called “Get Back.” In October, McCartney releases his $100 memoir in two volumes.
With “All Things Must Pass,” we go back to that Super Deluxe Edition, we get a very carefully curated project from George’s son Dhani Harrison and wife Olivia Harrison (Dhani’s mom), who so far have done an incredible job preserving George’s legacy.
