Oscars: French “Horror” Film “Titane,” Submitted by France Fails to Make Short List, Almodovar Missing for A Stupid Reason

0

The Academy has spoken. The Foreign Film branch has announced its shortlist and left off Julia Ducournau’s “Titane,” unlikely winner of this year’s Palme D;or at the Cannes Film Festival.

I am not surprised.

Though “Titane” is considered cutting edge by some, it gave me nightmares — twice. It’s a punk horror film that is way beyond the Oscars. In it, the main character, a very fluid young woman, has aex with a Cadillac and gives birth to a metal spined baby. And that’s the least objectionable part of it.

France submitted “Titane” as its official entry, and was denied. It’s as simple as that.

Meantime, Spain didn’t choose Pedro Almodovar’s “Parallel Mothers” as its Oscar entry. Instead, they put in “The Good Boss.” This was a mistake. Obviously, some kind of politics at the Spanish Film Commission were involved.  They will now lose, big time. Frankly, “Parallel Mothers” should be a Best Picture nominee, and Penelope Cruz should be up for Best Actress. Almodovar should be in for Best Director and Screenplay. I doubt this will happen, but it should.

The winner will likely be “Drive My Car,” from Japan, already the Best Picture chosen by the New York and Los Angeles Film Critics. It’s long, and a little slow, but the overall effect is masterful. Still, I don’t understand how a movie about people driving a 1980s Saab around Japan doesn’t include one scene of going to get gas. Or seeing a mechanic. Me? I loved “A Hero.”

Austria, “Great Freedom”
Belgium, “Playground”
Bhutan, “Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom”
Denmark, “Flee”
Finland, “Compartment No. 6”
Germany, “I’m Your Man”
Iceland, “Lamb”
Iran, “A Hero”
Italy, “The Hand of God”
Japan, “Drive My Car”
Kosovo, “Hive”
Mexico, “Prayers for the Stolen”
Norway, “The Worst Person in the World”
Panama, “Plaza Catedral”
Spain, “The Good Boss”

Here’s the Academy short list for Best Song. Included are some perennials like Diane Warren for her great song, “Somehow You Do” from a little seen movie starring Glenn Close called “Four Good Days.” It’s a competitive list that includes songs by Beyonce, U2, Jennifer Hudson. Lin Manuel Miranda, and Van Morrison among others.

My choices are in bold face. More to come on this subject…

“So May We Start?” from “Annette”
“Down To Joy” from “Belfast”
“Right Where I Belong” from “Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road”
“Automatic Woman” from “Bruised”
“Dream Girl” from “Cinderella”
“Beyond The Shore” from “CODA”
“The Anonymous Ones” from “Dear Evan Hansen”
“Just Look Up” from “Don’t Look Up”
“Dos Oruguitas” from “Encanto”
“Somehow You Do” from “Four Good Days”
“Guns Go Bang” from “The Harder They Fall”
“Be Alive” from “King Richard”

COVID ‘Cron Starts Causing Trouble: New York Film Critics Postpone January 10th Ceremony

0

The New York Film Critics Circle has postponed its January 10th awards ceremony.

“Out of safety concerns for our award winners and our members, we’ve made the decision to postpone our dinner. But rest assured, we’re going to find a way to celebrate the accomplishments of our winners in the coming months. Even in the midst of an uncertain time, we see this as a positive step forward.” stated NYFCC Chair Stephanie Zacharek.

The NYFCC named “Drive My Car” Best Picture even though no one stops to get gas in a three hour movie abour driving around Japan.

The ceremony would have taken place at Tao New York.

Now the National Bored of Review, with its January 11th gala dinner costing hundreds of dollars per ticket, should be in jeopardy. But they are very money-oriented, so risking the ‘Cron may still be worth it to their decision maker, Annie Schulhof.

Also at risk now is the January 9th Critics Choice ceremony in Los Angeles at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel.  Yesterday, the Critics Choice — which is contracted to TV slots on TBS and the CW networks — said they would proceed. But everything is up in the air at this point.

Broadway: “The Lion King” Pawses Performances Until December 27th, Joins a Long List of Shows

0

That’s it for Simba and friends.

“The Lion King” on Broadway is paws-ing performances until December 26th because of COVID.

The long running hit joins a long list of shows on hiatus this week including Hamilton, Hadestown, Aladdin, Dear Evan Hansen, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Ain’t Too Proud, and MJ: The Michael Jackson Musical  that are temporarily shut down thanks to the ‘Cron.

Sadly, “Jagged Little Pill” has shut for good.

“We are providing support to the affected Lion King company members as they recover,” the production announced. “We apologize for the disappointment and inconvenience this causes ticket holders, but we trust that audiences will agree that safety must be at the forefront of our return to Broadway.”

A new play, “Skeleton Crew,” has postponed the start of previews by a week.

Other shows have canceled performances but proceeded on this week. It’s smart to check with the theaters to see what’s going on since everything changes day to day.

“Spider Man: No Way Home” Will Clear $300 Mil in the US Today After Huge $37 Mil Monday

0

Just in case you were worried about Sony, Columbia Pictures or Marvel:

“Spider Man: No Way Home” made a whopping $37 million on Monday, just a 42% fall off from Sunday.

The triple action adventure will cross the $300 million this afternoon and blaze a trail toward $400 million this week and more records to be broken. This is despite a raging pandemic and Omicron. Sony has also picked up $212 million with “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” and over $100 million with “Ghostbusters.”

In an effort to have one film with no special effects, Sony is secretly releasing “A Journal for Jordan” this week directed by Denzel Washington and starring Michael B. Jordan. They’ve had almost no screenings. It’s unclear if this film will have a post-credits scene or action figures in the stores.

Sunday Ratings: “Yellowstone,” Spin Off Score 14 Mil Viewers, “SATC” Surprise Showings Fail to Register

0

Sunday’s cable ratings were stunning as usual for the Paramount Network, less thrilling for HBO.

“Yellowstone” on Paramount continued steady at the rate of 7.8 million viewers just on the main channel. Another 726K picked it up on the Country Music Television channel. They’ve really tapped that vein of the market.

But now “Yellowstone” has a companion show, “1883.” (Will it just be set in 1883 or will they have to change the title every year?) The new show scored 5 million viewers on the main channel following “Yellowstone” and then another 700K on CMT.

So that’s where the eyes were on Sunday.  They were not on HBO, that’s for sure. For the first week in 10 without “Succession,” the cabler had an odd night. From 8:30 to 10pm they surprise-showed their HBO Max only series “And Just Like That” from “Sex and the City.” In the prior week, HBO had shown the Coen Brothers movie “No Country for Old Men” in that spot and picked up 196K viewers. But the “SATC” shows didn’t even register in the top 150 programs of the night.

Later, at 10:30, “Curb Your Enthusiasm” ratings fell a bit under 400K, but the episode was comedy magic with Bill Hader playing three roles (and a fourth off screen). I don’t know what happened with Hader’s own show, “Barry,” but he’ll get a guest star Emmy Award for this one.

“Sex and the City” Stars Deal Chris Noth a Blow, Support the Women Who Made Accusations

0

The women from “Sex and the City” have posted this statement to their Instagram accounts. They have dealt Chris Noth a fatal blow supporting the women who’ve lodged accusations against Noth, their castmate for 20 years.

My next question is about the order of this signature. It’s not alphabetical. Or how the credits roll. At this hour, 10:10pm, it’s on Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis’s Insta accounts but not on Sarah Jessica Parker’s. I don’t know what that means. It could just be procrastination on SJP’s part. Let’s give it some time.

Ratings: “Saturday Night Live” Without Cast or Music Scored the Same as Billie Eilish, Simu Liu Episodes

0

Did it matter that “Saturday Night Live” had no cast, audience, or musical guest on Saturday night?

Apparently not.

Put together on the fly because of COVID, “SNL” scored 3.7 million viewers in overnight ratings on Saturday, the same as it got on the previous two Saturdays with Billie Eilish and Simu Liu.

Paul Rudd was the nominal host. Tom Hanks and Tina Fey helped out. Only Michael Che and Kenan Thompson came into the studio. Charlie XCX, the musical guest, did not perform.

There were taped clips and clips from the past. Steve Martin participated but only by Zoom.

I know it was a yeoman effort so NBC could sell ads, but it was a depressing episode.

Still, 3.7 million watched in real time. The final numbers could be a little higher. The 18-49 demo was 1.5 million, slightly higher than the week before.

The show was a lot cheaper to produce than usual. With only two cast members, a guest host, and two guests, “SNL” scored the same number as it got with superstars, an audience, and so on. Maybe this is the future!

Anyway, it’s over, What’s done is done. Looking forward to new episodes in 2022.

Ironic: COVID Kills Off Alanis Morissette Broadway Musical “Jagged Little Pill,” Ends Run Because of Virus

0

It’s ironic, as Alanis Morissette once sang.

The pop star’s Broadway musical, “Jagged Little Pill,” is dead thanks to COVID. The show’s producers say the virus has killed their show. “JLP” has played its last performance.

Here’s the statement from producers Vivek J. Tiwary, Arvind Ethan David and Eva Price:

We are so proud of this extraordinary show, and this extraordinary company, who every night in difficult circumstances, have told the Jagged Little Pill story. This show about healing, human connection, and catharsis, has been a salve to audiences, and to all of us, throughout these trying times.

Yet, the drastic turn of events this week with the rapid spread of the Omicron variant has, once again, changed everything. We are dismayed by what appears to be another substantial public health crisis, and – due to the detection of multiple positive Covid-19 cases within the company – need to prioritize the health and safety of the cast, crew, and entire team working on Jagged Little Pill. In light of the extreme uncertainty ahead of us this winter, and forced to choose between continuing performances and protecting our company, we’ve made the difficult decision to close our doors.

We know that the Jagged Little Pill story will continue to be told – and in the new year, will be announcing plans for subsequent productions, building on the show’s triumphant launch in Australia earlier this month. We also hope and intend to find a way to bring this vibrant and vitalizing musical back to the Broadway stage, once the current crisis is past, but at this time we are in the unfortunate position to determine Friday, December 17, 2021 as the final Broadway performance of Jagged Little Pill.

There is nothing in the world like live theater. There is no community in the world like this great Broadway family of artists and audiences. We will make it through this, together.

Chris Noth Finished Off, Fired from “The Equalizer,” Loses $12 Mil Business Deal, Dead on “SATC,” Now What?

0

So cancel culture has killed off Chris Noth completely now.

Accused by three women of sexual assault by three women– including rape allegations– has been wiped off the face of show business. Universal Television has fired him from “The Equalizer” TV series. He’s already dead on “Sex and the City.”

Additionally, he lost a $12 million endorsement deal for a tequila. Peloton killed his commercials filmed before the news broke of the allegations from two women. And then the third and fourth.

There are no police filings, no trial, nothing. The women are presumed correct in their claims. And just like that, Noth’s life is in smithereens. His professional life is totally laid waste. There’s nothing left of it. His guilt has been decided.

And no one from “Sex and the City” or “Law & Order” has spoken up for him. That’s what makes it even worse, No one has disputed the charges or stood up for his character except for one anonymous quote that didn’t help at all. So far, no one has stood up for Noth starting with his employer, Dick Wolf, for nearly 30 years.

Noth will appear in the January 2nd episode of “The Equalizer” and then disappear into TV history.
