A “Top Gun Maverick” Sequel– Producer Jerry Bruckheimer Says “It’s Up to Tom” But Director, Stars Are Ready If Called Upon

0

Will there be a “Top Gun Maverick” sequel? On Friday night, I got the answer.

Director Joseph Kosinski is ready. So is producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Star Miles Teller told me: “If you’d asked me when we finished this movie, I’d have said I needed a break. The whole cast did. But now it’s just about Tom.”

He added, it’s also about the cast. After all, he’s the only who didn’t — to use his word
“puke” — when they got back from flying the planes. The actors, as we’ve been told before, were up in those planes flying at speeds that were treacherous. Luckily, someone from the Air Force was up there with them, too. But no green screens. It was all terrifyingly real.

And Tom Cruise, the lightning rod for “Maverick”? Everyone was talking about him at Friday night’s screening and Q&A for the film, which had made $1.4 billion around the world, is beloved, and guess what? In a second viewing, it holds up to the hype. “Maverick” is an old fashioned Hollywood hit in the best way. Teller, Kosinski, and Bruckheimer were joined by Oscar winner Jennifer Connelly, who gives “Maverick” an unexpected gravitas. She is also — not PC to say anymore– gorgeous.

“It’s the wig,” she told me. “Everyone loves the wig.” No, it’s Connelly. (See below.)

Now the trick is, can it get Oscar nominations? My feeling: it must, or no one is going to watch the Oscars. The rest of the 2023 Oscar slate is high quality but has no blockbuster. Having “Top Gun Maverick” in the mix would give the Academy a needed jolt.

And then there’s Bruckheimer, who’s never won an award even after making five decades worth of blockbusters including the original “Top Gun.” He doesn’t even have a Producers Guild Award, which is kind of ridiculous. Famous with his late partner, Don Simpson, from their skyrocketing success early on. Bruckheimer has gone on to triumph after triumph.

In the Q&A with Fandango’s Erik Davis, Bruckheimer was low key and eloquent when asked about that this movie means to him:

“Well, first of all what is meant to the industry. A large part of our audience that came out to see Tom had not been out to see a movie in at least two years. So we brought a large audience from age 8 to 80 back to cinema and theaters. Around the world! It’s not just a movie for this country. Our grosses foreign were larger than our grosses in this country. This is a movie that brought people together. It’s not a red state or a blue state…it’s a movie for everybody…It’s because of the expertise of Tom Cruise and these amazing people on the stage with me and all the wonderful technicians who work so hard and smoothly to make it as good as it is… So it shows when you make a movie right it shows the brilliance of the people who make it.”

Well put.

When could we see a sequel? Cruise has to finish “Mission Impossible 8,” the second of two “MI” movies coming in 2023 and 2024. But I think “Top Gun M 2” will start up sooner than later, before everyone who made the first one loses their nerve!

By the way, I asked Connelly, how does it work when you’re in a film that starts breaking weekly records? If you’re the actors do you just read the Sunday headlines? Or does someone call and say “you’re making history”? Jennifer said, in this case, “Chris McQuarrie, our director, has us all on group chat. So he’d say, Look at this!” She shook her head. “And you can’t believe it!”

Critics Choice Doc Awards Come of Age in Sensational Show Honoring Barbara Kopple, with the Beatles, “Oppy” Winning Big Time

0

The Critics Choice Documentary Awards came of age last night. It was the best presentation in the event’s 7 years, held at the Edison Ballroom in New York.

Oscar winner Barbara Kopple received the lifetime Pennebaker Award from Chris Hegedus. Filmmaker Dawn Porter was honored as well.

Big winners included the Beatles’ “Get Back” documentary and “Good Night Oppy,” now a front runner for the Oscars. The latter is the true story of Mars landers that sent back signals after being though to be moribund. It’s like a real life “Wall E.”

The Beatles nominations were taken pretty seriously by the group. Jeff Jones and Jonathan Clyde, who run the Beatles operations, and rarely come to anything, were on hand and accepted their statues. Congrats!

Among the many star studded presenters were Paul Shaffer, Richard Kind, Tamara Tunie, Rob McElhenney, Idina Menzel, Jeremy Sisto, Paul Shaffer, Kathy Ireland, Reginald Hudlin, Reginald Hudlin, Soledad O’Brien, Tonya Lewis Lee, Erich Bergen, Andrew Jarecki, Shoshana Bean and Willie Colón.

Joey Berlin’s awards group has been very busy this week, with awards ceremonies also in Los Angeles for Latin Films and Black films — all top notch events. The big Critics Choice Awards air live on January 15th from Los Angeles on the CW network with all the main awards in movies and TV. Chelsea Handler is the host.

RIP John Aniston, Longtime Star of “Days of our Lives,” Famous Actor Father of Jennifer Aniston — NBC Owes Him A Broadcast Special

0

John Aniston, long time star of “Days of our Lives,” has died at age 89. Aniston was a TV actor long before his daughter, Jennifer, became one of the biggest stars in the world from the TV show, “Friends.” He was 89.

Aniston played tycoon Victor Kiriakis on “Days of our Lives.” He started out as a villain but over the years turned into a crochety but lovable pot stirrer and patriarch of a large family. Despite being in declining health, Aniston appeared in the daily show on a fairly regular basis until recently. He’d sit in a large, comfortable chair and give advice — or warnings — to the other characters. But “Days” shoots months in advance, so Aniston probably had not actually worked in some time.

For years before “Days of our Lives,” Aniston starred as Martin Tourneur on “Search for Tomorrow.” And he had a long resume dating well before that, with dozens of TV appearances. His TV history was immense. He joined “Days” in 1985, but had already appeared as another character long before, in 1970. He won a Lifetime Achievement Award this past summer from the Daytime Emmy Awards.

PS NBC owes John Aniston a broadcast special of “Days of our Lives” — not on Peacock, on the network. He worked for them for 42 years.

Jennifer Aniston wrote on Instagram:

“Sweet papa…⁣ John Anthony Aniston ⁣
You were one of the most beautiful humans I ever knew. I am so grateful that you went soaring into the heavens in peace – and without pain. And on 11/11 no less! You always had perfect timing. That number will forever hold an even greater meaning for me now 🕊️I’ll love you till the end of time💔⁣

Don’t forget to visit 💫🤗❤️”

George Clooney, Julia Roberts Golden “Ticket” as Romcom Robust at Box Office, Number 1 in Home Viewing

0

Congrats to Universal Pictures. They knew how to play this one like a Stradivarius.

George Clooney and Julia Roberts’ “Ticket to Paradise” made another $6 million this weekend. The movie had very low fall off from last weekend — just 29%. Wow. The grand total in the US is now $56 million.

What makes this so interesting is that “Ticket to Paradise” was also released to streaming this past week. And it’s number 1 on the Home Viewing chart. This means that equal numbers of people are seeing it in theaters and in their living rooms. That’s pretty impressive!

Will we see a “Ticket” sequel? Seems certain, no? The squabbling couple will no doubt turn up at another lavish locale to bust up a potential wedding — and cause trouble for their newly married daughter. The thing writes itself into a trilogy — see “Meet the Parents,” etc.

Stallone First TV Vehicle, “Tulsa King,” Panned by Critics, Kept Away from Ratings on Streaming Platform

Did you know Sylvester Stallone was on TV? No?

That’s because his first ever series, “Tulsa King,” is streaming only. Paramount TV is keeping it away from the dangers of low ratings. You will not find it on the Paramount Network, like its cousin, “Yellowstone.”

Paramount didn’t want to take any chances — especially since the show has not been received warmly by critics. It sits at a lowly 62% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Stallone’s had a wild summer. For the “Tulsa King” premiere he had to repair his family. His wife of 25 years, Jennifer, filed for divorce this summer. She and Sly really went at it. But cooler heads prevailed when someone realized that “Tulsa King” publicity rounds were coming. Sly didn’t need those nasty questions. So the Stallones are one big happy family again. For now.

We will never know the reality of “Tulsa King” viewership. Apparently, the premise is Tony Soprano arriving in Oklahoma. Really The real Tony Soprano didn’t know where Oklahoma was, and didn’t care. Bada bing!

Elon Musk Turns Down Former T Mobile CEO’s Offer to Run Twitter with Terse One Word Answer

We’ve all had the sting of being rejected for jobs we wanted.

John Legere, founder and former CEO of T Mobile, feels the pain this morning. He offered to run Twitter for Elon Musk. Musk responded with one word: No.

Obviously, Musk prefers Blue to Magenta.

Box Office: “Wakanda Forever” Takes Whopping Weekend with $180 Mil, 13th Biggest Opener, Disney Looks for Stock Revival Tomorrow

0

Disney’s stock went off a cliff last week on news of layoffs and cutbacks. The Mouse House is hoping for a major boost on Monday after news of box office for “Wakanda Forever.” Will they get it?

“Wakanda” had a great weekend by any measure. They scored the 13th biggest opening weekend with $180 million. The worldwide total is now $330 million.

Will “Wakanda” keep up this pace? Doubtful, although there’s not much competition in terms of a blockbuster destination movie. Even though it’s not as good or compelling as “Black Panther,” the sequel will still bring in big business for two or three weeks.

Also, the novelty of mourning Chadwick Boseman — the movie’s main theme– may wear off a bit as time goes by. I’ll bet more people go back to watch the original movie. Whatever happens, “Wakanda” is a hit, no surprise, and a bridge to the big finale in two or three years.

Washington’s National Portrait Gallery glittered with stars last night as the annual Portraits of a Nation were unveiled.

Alicia Keys unveiled the stunning portrait of music mogul Clive Davis, painted by legendary artist David Hockney. Nancy Pelosi took a few minutes off from saving the country and taking care of her husband to congratulate Clive and other honorees.

Those other honorees included José Andrés, Ava DuVernay, Marian Wright Edelman, Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., Serena Williams, and Venus Williams, all of whom saw their portraits unveiled in style as well. On view were six newly commissioned portraits and one never-before-seen photograph by contemporary artists also including Ruven Afanador (Edelman), Hugo Crosthwaite (Fauci), Kenturah Davis (DuVernay), Kadir Nelson (Andrés), Toyin Ojih Odutola (S. Williams) and Robert Pruitt (V. Williams).

At the cocktail party before the dinner that followed the group was serenaded by no less than Wynton Marsalis. Hillary Clinton, as well as Jeff Bezos and his girlfriend, were among the guests.

Visually Stunning “BARDO” Comes from Five Time Oscar Winner Alejandro Gonzales Innaritu First Film Since “The Revenant”

0

“BARDO, False Chronicle Of A Handful Of Truths,” had its LA premiere recently at AFI.  Five time academy award winner auteur Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, who directed and co-wrote the film, explained the origins of his ambitious artful, semi-autobiographical labor of love.

“This film comes from a very deep introspection that speaks about my personal and intimate memories but at the same time collective memory from the country that I belong.  Millions of immigrants dream to be in this country and to share in the opportunities here. At the same time there is no way to get out of the things that you’ve lost when you leave; your affection for the country you left, your friends and family, your roots.”

Alejandro continued his unique articulation the next day at a press conference for the Critics Choice Association. He talked about his feelings about being a ‘citizen’ of both countries. “I have surrendered and allow myself to live in this space of becoming.  I’m not attached to anything.  I’m from nowhere in a good way and that allows me to be in permanent transformation to become a better human being.  My nation is my family.  I think that’s the most beautiful thing.”

“BARDO” is a beautifully  affecting film which looks through a cinematic kaleidoscope of surreal and grounded storylines of the life of Mexican journalist and documentary filmmaker Silverio Gama, played wonderfully by Daniel Gimenez Cacho.  Gama is about to be honored with a prestigious award which brings up complex feelings and regret as he made the decision earlier to move his family from Mexico to live in Santa Monica.   Inatrritu’s musings on his own guilt, the complicated country that is Mexico, what he left behind and his own work and family guilt is truly affecting.  Visually stunning, along with literal dreamlike, production, and a terrific cast, “BARDO” is at two hours and thirty nine minutes, entrancing and self-indulgent in the most charming and expansive way.

Not What We Needed: Paulina Porizkova Changes Story of Ric Ocasek’s Death in New Book That Throws Cars Singer Under Bus

0

Paulina Porizkova has turned out to be the anti-Olivia Harrison. While Olivia has spent her life since George Harrison’s death building his legacy, Paulina has done nothing but trash the Cars’ Ric Ocasek since his demise.

Paulina has given dozens of interviews, in print and on TV, going over the events of her marriage and the last time she saw Ric, ad nauseum. He cut her out of his will, he said she’d abandoned him, she has no clue why? None whatsoever.

So now she has a book coming out on Tuesday. It’s called “No Filter” but it should be titled “Alternative Facts.” Paulina throws the Cars leader under the bus. She trashes him as much as she can but always does it lovingly. Poor Ric. He was a musical genius but obviously not smart about women (he was married three times and had six kids).

Detective Columbo would have fun with Paulina. Her story always changes just a bit. In the past she’s always said she went over to their town house, made Ric coffee and brought him cookies on the morning he was found dead. He’d just had surgery. He had no aide with him upstairs in the house, no buzzer or Life Alert. She says in the book she left him to go to a friend’s birthday.

OK: the friend was her boyfriend, a screenwriter she was living with. He is not named in the book. I’ve written about him before, but his name is easily Googled. Paulina has been pretending lately that he didn’t exist. Here’s a link to my past story.

In every retelling, there’s the coffee. In the book, the coffee is gone. There’s just a box of cookies. So this is what you bring a man who is gravely ill and recovering from surgery. And who, by the way, had cancer. She also neglects to say that.

It’s curious: she is and always has been only concerned about Ric’s will. His Last Will and Testament. The word “will” is in the book but online the word is not searchable on amazon. Very strange.

In the end, Paulina got what she wanted. She got the money. She probably got the rights to Ocasek’s songs. She sold her townhouse and got that money. She’s been posing naked wherever she can. Everyone grieves in their own way. Her way is without clothes. To put a twist on Ric’s song “Just What I Needed,” this book is not what we needed.

By the way, I guess this isn’t a full memoir, just a bashing of Ric Ocasek. There’s no mention of Paulina’s only movie of note, “Anna,” or her co-star Sally Kirkland. I guess that’s just as well.
