John Mellencamp to Get First Steinbeck Award Since 2003

0

The last time the Steinbeck Award was given out was in 2003, to Joan Baez. Named for the famed author of “The Grapes of Wrath” and “Of Mice and Men,” the award will now go to John Mellencamp. Good for him. Mellencamp has stayed true to his roots over the years, writing and singing about hard working men and women. He and Baez have also each won the Woody Guthrie Award. Other winners of the Steinbeck Award include Bruce Springsteen, Arthur Miller, Studs Terkel, Dolores Huerta, John Sayles, Jackson Browne, Garrison Keillor, Joan Baez, Michael Moore, Sean Penn, and Rachel Maddow. Good for John Mellencamp, whose “Little Pink Houses” and “Jack and Diane” are just a few of his vignettes that are emblematic of John Steinbeck. (So too really is “I Need a Lover Who Won’t Drive Me Crazy.”) He’s also one of the last story teller songwriters– something that’s become a lost art, sadly, in an age of tripe lyrics.

According to a press release:

The Steinnbeck Award will be given to Mellencamp on Monday, July 30, at the historic California Theatre in San Jose, CA, Thomas Steinbeck will present the John Steinbeck Award to singer/songwriter/activist John Mellencamp. “A Conversation and Special Performance” will include a talk with Mellencamp, moderated by Robert Santelli, executive director of the Grammy Museum, and musical performance from Mellencamp.

The John Steinbeck Award has been called “a beacon for the left” and its list of recipients “a who’s who of disturbers.” Previous recipients of the John Steinbeck Award are: .

The Center for Steinbeck Studies at San Jose State University is the world’s leading archive of Steinbeck materials, with over 30,000 items. The Center has been authorized by the Steinbeck estate to present awards to those artists and activists whose work exemplifies the themes and values found in the writings of John Steinbeck: in particular, his concern for the natural environment, his commitment to the common people, and his willingness to critique the contrasts between the powerful and the poor.

Of John Mellencamp, Thomas Steinbeck, noted author and the surviving son of John Steinbeck, said: “My father always carried a deep and profound respect for songwriters and musicians. He felt they were the voice of the people and had the unique opportunity to reach the very souls of the people. Like Woody Guthrie, Bruce Springsteen, and a handful of others, John Mellencamp has done just that. He has spent his life serving as a voice for the people.

“John’s 40-year career makes one marvel. As an artist, John Mellencamp has been a superb singer-songwriter-storyteller; as an exemplary activist, and as a creator and longtime champion of Farm Aid, he has maintained the true spirit of John Steinbeck’s compassion for the worker. Without question, John Mellencamp has earned the John Steinbeck Award, and it will be my great pleasure to present it to him.”

John Mellencamp commented, “John Steinbeck’s remarkable ability to give voice to the common man and to people on society’s margins, to describe their plight and aspirations, continues to inspire us more than a century after his birth.  I’m very honored to be the recipient of an award given in his name.”

The John Steinbeck Award, “in the souls of the people,” was first given in 1996. Nominations for the award are made by a committee of members of the board of the Center for Steinbeck Studies at San Jose State University.

Randy Jackson, Michael’s Delusional Brother: “We Were Denied Access to Our Own Home”

9

Just a little while ago, on MSNBC, Rev. Al Sharpton interviewed Randy Jackson, Michael’s brother, about yesterday’s fracas. Randy says quite clearly. “We were denied access to our own home.” Is Randy delusional? The home, in a gated community in Calabasas, is rented by the Michael Jackson estate for Katherine Jackson and her three grandchildren. Also living there is Joe Jackson’s nephew, Trent, whom Randy and Jermaine despise. But Trent was hired by Michael Jackson years ago to take care of his mother. It’s the estate on the lease, with occupants listed as Katherine, the kids, and Trent. Randy Jackson, accusing the executors of Michael’s estate of criminal misconduct, now believes that house in Calabasas is his, too.

Meanwhile, Randy, Jermaine, Rebbie and Janet have caused a huge problem in their family. Tonight, Marlon, Tito, and Jackie appeared on “The Insider.” Marlon broke down in tears claiming they don’t know where their mother is, and that they’ve been prevented from speaking with her. What a nasty situation the others have wrought. It’s going to end very badly. And it’s all because of money.

Michael Jackson Estate Wouldn’t Pay Randy and Jermaine’s Owed Child Support

13

One reason for all the hostility between Michael Jackson’s brothers and the estate: the brothers had to come to the executors hat in hand for money to pay their mutual ex and mother of their children. You know, Randy and Jermaine share an ex–Alejandra. Each of them has two children with her. Randy lived with her, then Jermaine married her. When Jermaine was stuck in Burkina Faso, Africa last winter, and couldn’t get back into the U.S. unless he paid back child support, Katherine Jackson intervened. She went to the executors and asked for the $91,000 Jermaine owed in child support. The estate loaned her $80,000, which Katherine then handed over to Jermaine.

UPDATE: The estate absolutely turned down requests from Jermaine and Randy, I am told.

Interestingly, the estate has had no problems with Michael’s other siblings. Jackie Jackson has actually done work for them. Marlon and Tito each work, and long ago got off the Jackson gravy train. Rebbie Jackson’s husband, Nathaniel, has had a series of jobs including, I am told, mail carrier, which is a decent civil service job and coveted in this economy. Rebbie’s son-in-law, Rex Salas, is a music producer.

Not everyone in the Jackson family is being supported by Michael Jackson or Janet Jackson. One June 9, 2005 I interviewed Jermaine’s first wife, Margaret Maldonado. Here’s what I wrote:

Meet Margaret Maldonado, the ex-common-law wife of Jermaine Jackson and mother of two of his sons, Jeremy (18) and Jourdynn (16). Note: this was seven years ago. Margaret’s business is still going strong at www.margaretmaldonado.com

Margaret, who’s 40, has an incredibly successful business representing photographers and stylists in Hollywood. Her Web site — www.margaretmaldonado.com — speaks for itself.

At last, someone in the family has gotten up off the couch and done something with her life. Margaret’s followed the playbook invented by Jackie Onassis for her kids, Caroline Kennedy and John F. Kennedy Jr., and raised them away from the glare of their famous family.

I spoke to Margaret recently about her son Jeremy’s interview last December with Santa Barbara County sheriff’s deputies. The investigators were following up on rumors that something inappropriate had happened between Michael and Jeremy.

Margaret says nothing could be further from the truth.

“We were shocked,” she told me. “They waited until he turned 18 and was home alone. They knocked on the door one afternoon. We couldn’t believe it.”

Maldonado says she raised her two kids completely separated from the Jacksons. She was never married to Jermaine, but they were together for seven years. She says she’s never received a penny of child support, even though she has a court order for it.

“I just said, ‘Forget it.’ It wasn’t worth going to court and fighting with him. I knew I could make it on my own.”

She does not use the Jackson name, and until I called, had never made her association with the family public.

“All I ever got from them was groceries from Costco,” she said. “It was a long time ago.”

Maldonado laughs at rumors that her Range Rover and a recent family trip to Hawaii were gifts from Michael.

“I really resent that,” she said. “It [ticks] me off that people don’t think a woman can do this on her own. We take two family trips a year. My son goes to private school. That’s my Range Rover.”

Maldonado does concede that Jeremy has finished high school via home schooling. That was a result, she said, of the bad publicity following the Nov. 2002 incident when Michael dangled his baby, Blanket, over the balcony of a German hotel.

“Kids can be cruel,” she says. “He was having a bad time.”

As for Michael, Maldonado says she’s close enough to her two sons to know that nothing happened between them and Michael that she needs to worry about.

“He was always just the eccentric uncle,” she said. “The kids used to follow him around like ducks. But there’s nothing else.”

Mira Nair’s “Reluctant Fundamentalist” to Open Venice Film Festival

0

The great Mira Nair, one of my favorite people, will open the Venice Film Festival with her new film, “The Reluctant Fundamentalist.” Mira’s great past films include “The Namesake” and “Monsoon Wedding.” The new film stars Kate Hudson, Kiefer Sutherland, Liev Schreiber, Martin Donovan, Riz Ahmed, Om Puri and Shabana Azmi. I’s described as an “international political thriller that follows the story of a young Pakistani man, chasing corporate success on Wall Street, who ultimately finds himself embroiled in a conflict between his American Dream, a hostage crisis, and the enduring call of his family’s homeland.”

The rest of the Venice lineup will be announced on Thursday in between announcements about the Jackson family.

Famed Washington DC Law Firm Says They Do NOT Represent Jackson Siblings

0

Do Randy, Jermaine and Janet Jackson have a lawyer to help them pull off their palace coup? Maybe not. A representative for Baker Hostetler in Washington DC has just called to say they do not represent the Jackson siblings and have not been engaged by them. In the letter signed by Randy, Jermaine and Janet sent to the Michael Jackson estate, Baker Hostetler’s name was invoked as possibly giving the signees advice. Sources tell me that BH partner John Manson was approached and did look into the matter. When I asked the rep who called about Manson’s participation, or if he’d given anyone advice, she simply kept reading the same two lines over and over. Then she added, “For anything else you’ll have to ask Randy Jackson.” And didn’t mean the judge from “American Idol.”

Confirmed: Lawyers Will Seek Temporary Guardianship for Michael Jackson’s Kids

0

I knew this story yesterday, and held off at the request of some insiders. But I can tell you that Michael Jackson’s estate lawyers, Katherine Jackson’s lawyers and the Jackson kids’ guardian ad litem are going to go to Judge Beckloff at Los Angeles Superior Court. With Katherine Jackson unreachable and out of town, the group will present a temporary guardian to watch Prince, Paris and Blanket and be repsonsible for them. The fight is on. Who the guardian will be is still unknown, but Tito Jackson’s adult sons have been with the kids the most, and have a great rapport with them.

Confirmed: As guardian, Mrs. Jackson has already legally appointed one of the three T’s–Tito Jackson’s sons–as her replacement guardian. When the lawyers go to court, one of the T’s–Terrell, TJ or Taj– will be named if Mrs. Jackson doesn’t appear in court.

The picture taken of Katherine Jackson and “family” and then sold to X17online.com by Randy Jackson– the people in the picture are Rebbie Jackson, her grandson, Katherine Jackson, Janet Jackson’s security guard, and a woman named Janice Smith. Smith is Mrs. Jackson’s personal assistant, who works for her in the Hayvenhurst Avenue house in Encino. According to sources, it was Janice Smith who helped engineer Mrs. Jackson’s trip to Arizona. I’m told that Mrs. Jackson has no idea that Janice Smith has been in cahoots with several of the Jackson children in order to effect this “palace coup.”  More to come…

Paris Jackson New Tweet: “9 days and counting… so help me god i will make whoever did this pay”

0

Paris Jackson just sent out a new Tweet. She had her siblings have now been removed from their home to keep them safe from Michael’s siblings. This is quite crazy. Sources tell me that footage this morning “Good Morning America” was ‘licensed’– ie. sold–to them by Randy Jackson. Oy vey. Also, GMA mis-identified TJ Jackson’s Tweet to Paris as coming from Trent Jackson, a cousin. TJ is Tito’s son. Paris has also the makings of a great war journalist. She’s faithfully reporting the action from her own Hanoi Hilton in Calabasas.

Here are some of our current Jackson postings:

Toronto Film Festival 2012: Ben Affleck, David O. Russell, Neil Jordan, Redford, Malick, Wachowskis

0

The 2012 Toronto Film Festival Tweeted out 60 films for its September gathering this morning. No press release. The Tweets are all in Capitals. In ten years or more I’ve never been able to get a single person on the phone from TIFF. Whatever. We go. And so: they’ve announced Ben Affleck’s “Argo,” David O. Russell’s “Silver Linings Playbook,” the Wachowskis’ “Cloud Atlas,” and Neil Jordan’s “Byzantium.” It’s a big list with lots of stars. Affleck will also be represented in the new Terrence Malick film, but as an actor. It’s called “To the Wonder.” Also highly anticipated: “The Sapphires,” the musical bought by the Weinsteins in Cannes. Love that film! Also: Robert Redford directing Susan Sarandon, Shia LaBeouf and Anna Kendrick in “The Company You Keep.” Susan Sarandon is ready for a big comeback. #tiff remains an enigma wrapped in a shroud, covered by a mystery.

Opening night film: Rian Johnson’s “Looper” with our old pal, Bruce Willis, the ubiquitous Joseph Gordon Levitt, and Emily Blunt.

Also official: what could be Bill Murray’s Oscar performance, in “Hyde Park”–this could be Bill’s year. “Anna Karenina” which I’m told is wonderful, with Kiera Knightley. Billy Bob Thornton directing “Jayne Mansfield’s Car” (hope this isn’t distressing to Mariska Hargitay). “Great Expectations” with Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, and Sally Hawkins. “Inescapable” with Alexander Siddig, Joshua Jackson and Marisa Tomei.

There will be tons and tons of A listers and stars walking around Bloor St. and hanging around the Lightbox. That much is good.

PS Expect to hear about Dustin Hoffman’s “Quartet” and maybe Coens’ “Inside Llewyn Davis.”

Debbie Rowe “Very Concerned” About Katherine Jackson, Kids

1

Debbie Rowe, biological mother of Prince and Paris Jackson, is said to be “very concerned” about Katherine Jackson and all three of Michael Jackson’s kids. Sources tell me that when Paris Jackson first Tweeted the news that her grandmother was missing, Debbie dropped everything she was doing in northern California for her ranch business and headed straight to Calabasas.

California. Rowe, who as I’ve written before has a very cordial friendship with Mrs. Jackson, stayed for several days at the home of producer Marc Schaffel, just one gated community away from the Jacksons. Schaffel, a long time friend and business associate of Michael Jackson’s, taped the first interview with Mrs. Jackson after Michael’s death and has remained very friendly with her.

Neither Debbie Rowe nor Marc Schaffel returned calls yesterday. But Rowe, who’s back at her ranch awaiting word on Katherine Jackson, has had several conversations with the grandmother since Michael’s death and is very happy with the way the kids are being raised, I am told. The relations between both houses is so relaxed, sources say, that Paris Jackson has been posting pictures of Rowe on her Facebook page.

Katherine Jackson’s Lawyers: “Plan in Place for Three Years to Remove Her From Her Home and Grandchildren”

5

EXCLUSIVE Katherine Jackson’s lawyers have sent me a statement about what went on yesterday in Calabasas. All of it was witnessed by the attorneys. Here it is, exclusively:

“Yesterday afternoon certain Jackson family members ambushed Katherine Jackson’s home after their vehicle tore through security gates on the tails of the SUV containing Michael Jackson’s children.  After exiting their vehicles, Jackson family members ran up to Michael’s children as they yelled and began to aggressively grab at the cell phones in their hands. Out of concern for the well being of Prince, Paris, and Blanket Jackson, the children were forced to temporarily leave their home and taken to a safe location.  An altercation ensued shortly thereafter and law enforcement arrived at the scene.

“Following the incident, it was learned that one of the family members who was part of the ambush admitted that a plan has been in place for the last three years to remove Katherine Jackson from her home and her beloved grandchildren.  Prince, Paris, and Blanket Jackson have not heard from their grandmother since she left their home nine days ago to attend a series of her sons’ concerts on their Unity Tour. She never made the shows. Despite efforts to interview Katherine Jackson at her current location in Arizona yesterday, Los Angeles County Sheriffs confirmed that they were denied access to Mrs. Jackson by security for one of her children. “
