Pop Star Ed Sheeran Closes the Door (Literally) On Old Rockers

0

It was a wild night at the Cutting Room on East 32nd St. last night: famed record producer and manager Peter Asher’s one man show was so popular that owner Steve Walter had to open the dividing wall between the bar-restaurant and his rock club so everyone could see the show. Fans poured into all the Cutting Room spaces as Asher–who was a pop star as Peter & Gordon, discovered James Taylor for the Beatles’ Apple Records, and a hit last year from “Madagascar 3”–recalled his life story with his crack band and amusing rare videos and pictures.

But wait! Newish pop star Ed Sheeran was there on a furlough from his Madison Square Garden gigs. He enjoyed Asher’s show so much that Sheeran was a little annoyed by some old guys just behind him in an ante room all talking loudly to each other while Asher performed. So he got up and quietly shut the doors, leaving the old guys to their business.

What Sheeran didn’t realize: the “old guys” were the Rolling Stones’ Mick Taylor, Bad Company’s Simon Kirke, and the Kinks’ Dave Davies, all catching up with each other! The doors were re-opened, and the delighted Sheeran got to meet some of his rock idols.

Meantime, also in the audience were May Pang, Seymour Stein, actor Michael Murphy and Kathryn Altman, widow of director Robert Altman, as well as famed art dealer and co-founder of Rolling Stones Records (circa 1971) Earl McGrath.

Asher’s show, by the way, continues to be a hit. Last night he brought original Moody Blues member and Wings star sideman Denny Laine on stage to sing “Go Now” with the band. And Jeffrey Alan Ross, who leads Asher’s band, sang Badfinger’s “Baby Blue” in honor of its inclusion in the finale of “Breaking Bad.”

We also learned something no one knew before– that Mike Myers partially modeled Austin Powers on Peter Asher’s look from the 60s, big glasses, bangs and all!

People’s Choice Awards Joke: Timberlake, Thicke Nominated for “Best R&B Artists”

0

You know and I know that the People’s Choice Awards are a joke. They’ve just released their “nominees” for 2014 and the funniest category is in music for Best R&B artist. Robin Thicke and Justin Timberlake, who at best do send ups of soul music, are included with Alicia Keys, Rihanna and Ciara. The idiots at People’s Choice couldn’t find one black male singer to put in the category. No Drake or Jay Z or Miguel or John Legend, Frank Ocean, or the great Charlie Wilson.

So now R&B has even been taken away from black singers. They’ve been replaced by two white guys who are doing tributes to black music. We haven’t come very far from Pat Boone stealing songs from Little Richard, have we?

If those women are smart, they’ll excuse themselves from the category.

Meantime, the Best Dramatic actor could be Channing Tatum or Chris Hemsworth. Hello?

And the five picks for Best Movie are all sequels. All of em. They didn’t even include “Gravity.”

People’s Choice is the 7-11 of Awards shows, and even that’s insulting to 7-11. The whole thing is based on the very least common denominator. The so-called winners are arranged for and are the only guests who attend. They are “surprised” when they reach the podium. It’s a hoot.  I would cover it, but I have to wash my hair that night.

Lady Gaga: Who Should Be or Could Be Her Next Manager?

3

Now that Lady Gaga is getting out of business–unwisely–with Troy Carter, who will she turn to? If this story goes as history’s proven, Gaga will be back with Carter in three years when she realizes the mistake she made. But in the meantime, who are her go-to’s?

1. Scooter Braun– the guy behind Justin Bieber and Carly Rae Jepsen. He’s into charity and philosophical musings on Twitter. He also likes to travel, and is rarely in the same place as his clients. This may be fine for Gaga, who doesn’t want close attention anyway.

2. Benny Medina– he knows divas. Between Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey, Benny has seen every crazy backstage demand known to man or beast. If she listened to him, Gaga would soar.

3. Col. Tom Parker– managed Elvis Presley. He’s dead. But Gaga needs someone this devoted to her.

4. Jermaine Dupri– currently managing Mariah Carey. Advised girlfriend Janet Jackson for a long time and did pretty well.

5. Coran Capshaw– managed Dave Matthews so well he launched a huge management firm in the process called Red Light. Dave has no hit singles and no one cares. He can sell out a stadium in two minutes.

6. Simon Cowell– come on, you know this would be so over the top. Even better: Simon Fuller. So much fun!

7. Guy Oseary– already managing Madonna, who’s Gaga’s predecessor. Just get Gaga into Kabbalah and we’re all set.

8. Irving Azoff– the only one whom she would have to listen to, or else. But he’s got the Eagles and Steely Dan and enough success. There isn’t enough Advil.

9. Johnny Wright– imagine a Gaga-Timberlake duet.

10. Larry Rudolph- already has Miley and Britney. Knows naked ambition. Doesn’t mind daily breakdowns. Probably has stock in Kleenex.

Clive Davis is There as Janis Joplin Gets Her Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (See Video)

2

Janis Joplin got her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame yesterday. Why was it only in 2013? Because no one had asked for it before. Recording industry legend Clive Davis, who signed Janis to Columbia Records in 1967, was on hand. So was Kris Kristofferson who wrote Joplin’s hit “Me and Bobby McGee.” He sang it at the ceremony on Hollywood Boulevard. You can hear-see him on the official video, with fans singing along.

Davis told me how he felt: “I’m so proud for the recognition of Janis and the sadness she’s not around us.”

Laura Joplin, Janis’s sister: “To celebrate with Kris, who was so important in her life, we don’t get many opportunities like that. Janis was successful because of her strength. She was ahead of her time.” Michael added, “She was right on time too, she couldn’t have done what she did at any other time.”

I asked how they felt about the upcoming biopic of their sister, to be directed by Lee Daniels and starring Amy Adams.

Laura said: “We would like a movie about her, it’s about time. I hope for the best.”

Mitch Davis, Clive’s powerhouse music entrepreneurial son, who is about to launch his own yet unnamed label told me, “This is a meaningful day for my father. He came here to keep her memory alive and wanted to be here for her legacy. Clive’s love of music has so much to do with her; she was his first major signing. Last week, he was on the ‘The Late Show’ and her name came up. She’s continuously reaching new generations of fans and is an iconic figure to music fans worldwide.”

Clive then told the crowd: “There has never been an artist like Janis. That was so evident from the first time I saw her on stage. She vibrated, the music going thru her whole body, throwing that unruly hair around and letting out that sound from deep in her gut. I can still picture it and I can still hear it four decades later. How truly revolutionary she was. It was obvious that she studied her blues and R and B predecessors, but she was something new.

“She did for women in rock, what Aretha did for women in soul. She broke all the rules for what was possible and permissible, she was pained and vulnerable. She was riveting. Our paths crossed that weekend in 1967. We bonded, and as I wrote in my book, she thought our relationship should be in more physical, traditional way. (which cracked up Kris.) It didn’t go that way, but it doesn’t mean our relationship wasn’t personal and intimate. She had her hopes and insecurities. I was completely prepared to be by her side for a very long time. I was filled with anticipation for what was coming down the road. It broke my heart when she died. I was angry, because she was depriving everyone of her life force.

“This contradictory chick from Texas was on top of the rock world. She was unapologetically herself. She helped change from what we perceive star quality to be. I’m so glad she’s here on the Walk of Fame. She’d be drinking Southern Comfort and having a good time. Artists from around the globe all still say that she was their inspiration. Her spirit is still with us. Nothing was the same for me after I first saw Janis Joplin.”

Review and Some (Known) Spoilers: “Thor 2” Kicks Ass

1

Yes, Thor is back. Chris Hemsworth, looking no worse for the wear after snogging and racing in “Rush,” is throwing his hammer around in every direction again. Tom Hiddleston is brother Loki, a little low key at the beginning of “Thor: The Dark World” but eventually exercising his right to be the villainous bad boy brother to Thor and son of scene chewing Anthony Hopkins. Rene Russo (still on her extended leave from movies) has an extended cameo as the boys’ mom. Natalie Portman returns as brainy Jane of the real world, kinda Thor’s girlfriend.

And there they are. What makes Marvel movies work is that they’re character driven and witty. “Thor,” even at its silliest, is 100 times more fun than “Man of Steel.” It has a simple plot, spelled out. It has well defined characters with clear back stories and motivations. And it’s been shaped into a story with a beginning, middle, end, and a big tease of the next installment. What else do you want?

While 3D boulders and monsters are blowing up and buildings are falling down, you get just enough jokey inside stuff to make you keep watching. Another Marvel super hero turns up unexpectedly, and it’s perfect. The teaser for the sequel is a mysterious meeting with another Marvel character. What’s going on? There are cross overs, and references to other Marvel comics.

Then there’s the whole business of Thor and family slipping into the contemporary world in which Jane and her friends live. There’s a centerpiece action sequence that bounces in and out of real and fantasy worlds. Some of the London scenes look they were filmed in the Oxo Tower restaurant on the South Bank. If you’ve been there you can almost imagine super heroes flying around and fighting among themselves.

Hemsworth is a solid hero. He’s no Laurence Olivier, but that’s what Hiddleston is there for. What Hemsworth lacks in emotive quality, he makes up for as a tentpole. Hiddleston gets to have the most fun. He and Hopkins could verbally joust all day. Director Alan Taylor comes from TV and “Game of Thrones,” “Mad Men.” But he’s got a sharp eye, his scenes pay off. He does a new “Terminator” movie next, and we’ll be hearing his name again soon in the Marvel world.

PS As usual, watch for the Stan Lee appearance. He’s put himself in the one place we will never ever find him.

Exclusive: Lady Gaga and Manager Troy Carter Splitting

134

EXCLUSIVE

Lady Gaga and her loyal manager Troy Carter are over. The reason is “creative differences.” Carter literally created Gaga’s career in 2007, got her a multi zillion dollar deal at Interscope, and helped hatch her from that egg she appears in. I am told by friends that Carter was cut out of the ARTPop album campaign. and that Gaga has refused advice. “She doesn’t take direction anymore,” a source told me.

troy carterThis all culminated in last night’s train wreck of an appearance at the YouTube Awards. Millions of people tuned out as Gaga appeared in darkness singing a terrible ballad called “Dope.” It’s one of three songs on ARTPop with references to drugs, not smart for her young audience. As well, Gaga apparently left a couple of what I’m told were “great” songs off ARTPop that could have been hits. (One of them was a song I featured here a few months ago, a duet with Cher.)

But this is what happens when a “star” believes they are too big to take guidance. What a shame. Carter manages John Legend and other artists, so he will be fine. Gaga, however, has problems on the horizon. Last night’s outing was a nightmare. She cried and carried on, and even her most fanatic fans didn’t know what was going on. “ARTPop” is released in one week– November 11th. It’s had a flurry of leaked singles but no focus or direction. Remember how clear the “Born this Way”  campaign was? “ARTPop” is all over the place. And that may be reflected in its initial sales.

Former Disney Star Shia LaBeouf Has Sex in Pornographic Trailer for “Nymphomaniac”

4

Lars von Trier made one of the best movies ever in “Melancholia.” He also made one of the most offensive with “Anti-Christ.” At the 2012 Cannes Film Festival press conference for the former von Trier suggested to his actresses that they make a porn movie wit him. Kirsten Dunst more or less said he was out of his mind. But her co-star Charlotte Gainsbourg is in “Nymphomanic.”

This clip is NOT SUITABLE FOR ANYTHING BUT PRIVATE USE.

Shia LaBeouf is filmed having sex, for real, with Stacy Martin. The film has no US distributor, but plenty abroad. It opens in Denmark on Christmas Day. Merry Xmas, Copenhagen! Shia is not shy, ya. Why is it former Disney child stars (Miley Cyrus, hello) want to be shot nude or en flagrante?

“Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” Gets White House Screening This Thursday

1

Big news: President Obama and his family will host a White House screening for Justin Chadwick’s “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” this Thursday. Stars Idris Elba and Naomie Harris and Harvey Weinstein will on hand. Nelson Mandela’s daughters Zindzi and Zenani Mandela, will be on hand as well. The Weinstein Company movie screened in Toronto in September to raves, and opens November 29 in the U.S. The film had its South African premiere this past weekend in Johannesburg with Winnie Mandela in attendance. Said Zindzi Mandela in a press release: “Idris Elba brings my father’s essence to life with an exceptional performance as Nelson Mandela. I loved the film, especially how it portrays my father’s life and his global impact from the values of a small village boy through to an international leader.”

Hugh Jackman, Darlene Love Celebrate Fantasia “After Midnight” Opening

4

Hugh Jackman and wife Deborra Lee Furness, famed pop singer Darlene Love, Mary Louise Parker, and R&B star Freddie Jackson were just a few of the celebs in the star studded audience last night for the opening of “After Midnight.” The jukebox jazz show stars Fantasia Barrino– yes, Fantasia from “American Idol”– in the show that may establish her once and for all as the leading vocalist of her generation. With an incredible cast of dancers and singers including Dule Hill (the star of TV’s Psych) and the amazing Adriane Lenox, “After Midnight” is an authentic, organic pleasure.

There’s no story– it’s just a night at the Cotton Club in the early 1920s, with great costumes and sets, and one performer after another wowing the crowd. The Jazz at Lincoln Center All Stars — organized and directed by Wynton Marsalis– comprise the Big Band, and they are on stage all night as part of the cast. Believe me, the instrumental numbers with just dancers like the incomparable Karine Plantadit and Jared Grimes, which mix ballet and tap, are knockouts. There’s also a not to be missed set up between Julius “iGlide” Chisolm and Virgil “Lil O” Gadson — you’ve got to see these guys mix it up.

But the spotlight is on Fantasia, whose numbers include “Stormy Weather,” “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love,” and a show stopping “Zaz Zuh Zaz.” Fantasia has now matured beyond her “Summertime”-“American Idol”– and hip hop albums of the last couple of years. This is her groove, and I hope she knows it. She is literally channeling and updating Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington. She is so the real thing. There must be a market for this in a world of crass, amusical pop ( you know who I mean). And she’s only going to get better with age.

“After Midnight” should be the go-to show this winter– 90 minutes, and total joy. Fantasia is set to leave in February, but maybe she’ll decide to stay. If not, the producers had better see if they can get Natalie Cole or Gladys Knight. We don’t want this show to go away any time soon!

Lady Gaga: YouTube Awards Performance is a Downer, Is She Losing It? (VIdeo)

4

You can try too hard sometimes. Maybe that’s what’s happening with Lady Gaga. Her performance of a downer song called “Dope” on the awful You Tube Music Awards tonight was a major FAIL. The LA Times reports several thousand fans clicked off while she was singing–in the dark, looking awful, dressed like a trucker or something, who knows? Gaga’s ARTPop album is out a week from Tuesday. Maybe she’s already bored with it. But selling albums isn’t easy these days. Even Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, and others have sold ok but not astounding numbers. Gaga has good songs on ARTPop. She better not blow it. Play the title track, or “Applause” or something upbeat, my dear. This is not going to work.
