“Inside Llewyn Davis” Wins National Society of Film Critics, Means Nothing

The National Society of Film Critics is the complete opposite of the National Board of Review– they’re real, respected critics. And yet, they mean nothing in the Oscar race, almost as little as the NBR. Neither group is a predictor of Oscars. Stick with the SAG Awards for that. But at least the NSFC had made good choices. They voted Oscar Isaac for Best Actor in “Inside Llewyn Davis,” the best picture. I am really surprised that there’s not been more momentum for Robert Redford’s extraordinary performance in “All is Lost.” But that company, Roadside Attractions, has made no friends since day one. With another distributor, that movie would be considered a masterpiece. Oh well. Love Oscar, love the movie. The numbers next to the titles are the people who voted. Last year the NSFC chose “Amour” and Emmanuelle Riva. Hmmm…

Paris Jackson is back on social media. Just as her family is once again angling to get money from someone for Michael Jackson’s death (I’ll get into that in a minute) Paris has returned from social media exile. Actually she was never gone. Even though her Twitter account stopped cold last June when she attempted suicide, Paris made a quick switch to Instagram.

On Instagram the not yet 16 year old has been posting photos regularly. This week, she put a photo of herself in a bikini, a Happy New Year’s card, and a few shots of friends either from home in Calabasas or from her Utah sleep away and recovery school. She looks happy and like a 15 year old.

The only problematic photo was posted last September with a disturbing message: “To love is to destroy. And that to be loved is to be the one destroyed.”

Hopefully, some therapy is being applied at that school.

And oh yes, the Jacksons, thwarted in their attempt to get money by suing AEGLive, are now trying to snatch that $17 million Lloyds of London policy from the insurer. In the AEG case the Jacksons claimed that Michael was sick as a dog, frail, and not able to perform the London concerts. Now in the Lloyds case they say Michael was in great shape. Whatever. The court sees right through it. There will be no $17 million payday.

Phil Everly, of the Beloved Harmonizing Everly Bros., Dead at 74

Phil Everly, who won the hearts of many generations singing with his brother Don, has died at age 74. The Everly Brothers’ harmonies sounded like heaven on Earth, and inspired singer from Simon & Garfunkel to Lennon and McCartney, the Mamas and the Papas, and even Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, and Dave Edmunds. Their hits, from “Wake Up Little Susie” to “Bye Bye Love” still resonate, and sound as fresh as a summer breeze. Like all singing duos (some of them actual brothers) the Everlys didn’t always get on so well. They did reunite in the 1980s for a new album when Paul McCartney wrote them a new song.

Many of their songs were written by Felice and Beaudleaux Bryant, a husband and wife team whose son Dell has long been a guiding force at BMI Music. The Bryants wrote 23 hits for the Everlys. But it was the brothers who sang them, and made magic. Dell Bryant told me tonight that he’d known the Everlys since he was 8 years old. “Phil was the sweet brother, even Don would acknowledge that!” Dell observed. “Phil could sing lead and sing harmony. He was the best at it. He was a good man, a sweet man, a family man and the best damn harmony singer ever.”

2014 Oscar Ballots Are Out, Here Are Our Choices for Nominees

This just breaks my heart. A few days ago I listed 10 movies that were my favorites. Now I have to really break it down for the Oscar categories. This isn’t easy. There were too many good movies this year, and too many knock out performances. What can do you? How do you not include young upstarts like Oscar Isaac and Michael B. Jordan? Vets like Julia Roberts? Harrison Ford?

How can you leave “Gravity” out of the top 10 but give merit to its director? “Gravity” has made zillions of dollars. That’s the reward. Some people I know will faint when they see I chose “Her” over “Inside Llewyn Davis.” I loved both movies. But looking at the SAG nominees and talking to Academy voters, I’m getting a sense of what’s happening. “Philomena” is a phenomenon. Everyone loves it. Judi Dench is going to pull Steve Coogan along.

Oh, best actress: I’m so torn, I’ve left the fifth slot a tie between Sandra Bullock, whom I adore, and Emma Thompson, who’s so lovably haughty in “Saving Mr. Banks.”  But I can’t leave Amy Adams out.

Can’t there be more slots? And doesn’t Oprah have everything in the world already? Yes, but she is outstanding in “The Butler.” That can’t be diminished. Matthew McConaughey? You think he lost that weight for nothing? He’s great in three movies this year, dammit.

Think about it: “Captain Phillips” is superior filmmaking. So was “Lone Survivor,” but the momentum isn’t there. It’s the “Three Kings” of 2013.

And where to put Idris Elba? You tell me. There are only five slots for Best Actor. He and Forest Whitaker each deserve one. But look at my five. And then think about Joaquin Phoenix, Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale, too.

Special dispensation for original screenplay– Fruitvale, Short Term 12, Frances Ha, and Enough Said were all gems. Gems.

2014 Writers Guild Nominees: “Osage,” “Hustle,” “Jasmine,” “Her” Among Choices

Surprise! The Writers Guild nominees are out for 2014. And the surprise is that Joel and Ethan Coen were NOT nominated for the beloved “Inside Llewyn Davis” script. Instead, the Guild went for “The Dallas Buyers Club.” Huh? The Coens are usual nominees at WGA. Some screenplays, like “12 Years a Slave,” “Mandela,” and “Philomena” are ineligible for WGA. So you won’t find them. And “Gravity” didn’t have enough Gravitas, I guess. “Saving Mr. Banks” also didn’t make the cut. The WGA chose February 1st for their ceremony, which means the NY event will compete with pre-Super Bowl parties in Times Square. (That’s called planning ahead!)

Anna Crouse, Grandmother of “Girls” star Zosia Mamet, Creator of TKTS Booth, Dies at 97

Anna Crouse, widow of playwright Russel Crouse and mother of actress Lindsay Crouse, has died at age 99. So far only a couple of paid for obits have turned up in the New York Times. Amazing. Anyway, Anna Crouse was 23 years younger than her husband.

Russel Crouse wrote a bunch of hit plays with Harold Lindsay including “Life with Father.” They wrote the book for “The Sound of Music,” and won a Pulitzer for “State of the Union.” They also wrote the book for Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes.” Crouse died in 1966 at age 73.

The Crouses had two children–Lindsay, a formidable actress, and, Timothy, wrote the famous book “The Boys on the Bus” about traveling in an election year with presidential candidates.

Anna Crouse, to a younger generation, is the grandmother of Zosia Mamet, star of the TV show “Girls.” Zosia’s parents are Lindsay Crouse and playwright David Mamet.

But Anna Crouse is even better known for her work in the New York theater. She is considered the engine behind the TKTS half price ticket booth in Times Square. She gave years of service to TDF, the Theater Development Fund, serving as Chairwoman and a Trustee, all between 1968 and 1993. In the TDF’s paid obit, the current execs wrote: “it is fair to say that without her it would not have happened; her influence and support extended beyond TKTS to the entire fabric of the organization.”

No one thinks about the TKTS booth and how it changed New York life. You think it’s always been there; it hasn’t.

There’s a great obit on playbill.com. According to an article in the Times, Zosia Mamet is estranged from her mother. Too bad. Anna Crouse sounds like she was amazing. Rest in peace.

Justin Bieber UPDATE Film Flops, New Album Sales Collapsing

10PM WEDNESDAY: The box office disaster of Justin Bieber’s “Believe” album is spreading to other parts of his career. His new “Journals” album has dropped on the iTunes album chart to number 12 after less than a week. The failure of the film has infected the album sales. When numbers for album sales are counted on Monday, there are going to be surprises galore about what went on during the two week holiday.

As I noted last month, Bieber has no support at radio. His records aren’t played. His sales of albums was based purely on teen pop stuff– magazines, gossip columns, the internet. “Journals” debuted to no radio play. None of the tracks broke out as singles. And now the weight of the thing is pulling it down. Also, as I’ve noted too, the fan base is aging. They are letting go and moving on to the next step.

Watch for Bieber’s sales numbers, as well as Britney Spears’, to cause much noise on Monday…

 

EARLIER: Yikes! Not to bead a dead horse (or a dying one) but Justin Bieber’s New Year’s Day box office is seriously serious. According to an estimate send out by Open Road, “Believe” will make $195,181 by the end of today. That makes its cume still less than the $5 million they claim it took to make. And of course that’s ridiculous right there, or just inventive accounting. Open Road had to spend at least that on advertising and prints. “Believe” is about to disappear entirely after a one week run. Fame is fleeting! That $195k is quite a fall off from the day before, at $460K.

Sad News: James Avery, Father from “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” Dies at 65

James Avery, the genial actor who played the father on “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” has died at age 65. The cause, reports TMZ and other outlets, was complications from open heart surgery. He played Philip Banks, the wealthy uncle of Will Smith, on the hit show, for seven seasons from 1990 to 1996. After that Avery never stopped working on TV. He was about as continuous of a presence as he could be. I met him several times at various events and he was just the nicest guy, very articulate and funny. Alfonso Ribero, who played his son on “Fresh Prince,” has already posted something on Facebook. I’m sure we’ll be hearing from the whole cast soon. RIP.
PS Avery’s death comes one week after the unexpected death of “Fresh Prince” producer and co-creator Jeffrey Pollack at age 54.
