Mick Jagger Dances Up A Storm at Premiere of James Brown Movie He Produced

2

Mick Jagger can’t resist a good dance groove. Accompanied by many of his children and grandkids, Mick danced up a storm on Monday at the after party behind the Apollo Theater for the movie “Get On Up.” The film had its premiere earlier in the night, with several members of James Brown’s family in attendance. The movie is about the Godfather of Soul, and features an absolutely stunning Oscar worthy performance by Chadwick Boseman.

Also in the audience at the legendary Apollo: Rachel (Mrs. Jackie) Robinson, Al Roker, “Mad Men” star John Slattery with wife Talia Balsam and their son Harry; plus songwriting legend Valerie Simpson, and other cast members including Dan Aykroyd (with wife Donna Dixon); Nelsan Ellis, Fred Melamed, Craig Robinson, Jill Scott, and Brandon Smith.

There was also a nice contingent of agents and managers including Fred Spektor, Adam Schweitzer, Emily Gerson Saines, and Bryan Lourd. No less than Ron Meyer and Donna Langley were there from Universal, and of course Brian Grazer, for whom this was a passion project.

The movie jumps around a bit and is not told in a linear order. But you can put that aside. The music is wonderful. The performances are each spot on, with Viola Davis turning in her usual tour de force as James’s abandoning mother. Nelsan Ellis is a real find as Bobby Byrd, although I wish director Tate Taylor had given him a chance to perform Byrd’s big solo hit “You Got Soul.”

There will be some carping about the storyline. But James Brown was a highly eccentric and unsympathetic person. He was not Ray Charles. His patois was a language unto itself. I give the filmmakers credit for trying to capture some of Brown while still immortalizing his fierce talents. This was not an easy assignment. The movie also kind of sputters out, when it should have ended in 1985 with Brown’s resurgence as a star and his song “Living in America.” That’s a big miss.

But we do get a sizable helping of Mr. Brown through Boseman. The actor is simply remarkable re-creating Brown’s footsteps and singing. Considering how hard it’s been to get movies made about Jackie Wilson, Marvin Gaye, and so on, it’s amazing this one has been done at all. It absolutely should not be missed.

I did ask Jagger about meeting Brown, and he said over the years they had several interactions. Before the film screened, Jagger joked about coming to the Apollo and seeing James Brown for the first time. “I was offered a very large joint,” he joked. The drugless Rolling Stone declined, but had a good laugh.

Considering what Jagger’s been through this year, he looked pretty damn good. He relaxed at the party and enjoyed his large family, jumping onto the dance floor to a Chaka Khan song while Robinson– who’s in the movie and was in “The Office”– did some emceeing and freestyle rapping. At one point, Jagger had a dance off with James Brown’s young son, James Brown II, who’s 12 and has his father’s dance moves. If you’re looking for the next Michael Jackson, this kid may be the one.

Watch JJ Abrams Give Away a Couple of “Star Wars” Spoilers in New Video

Exclusive: Scarlett Johansson’s Baby Is A Girl, Set for Labor Day Delivery

2

Exclusive: Scarlett Johansson has a busy second half of the summer. Her movie “Lucy” opens Friday with Morgan Freeman. And five weeks from now the Oscar nominee and Tony winner will give birth to a baby girl on around Labor Day. How appropriate!

Looking back at some clips from the winter, TMZ declared that Scarlett was five months pregnant back on March 3rd. That was almost 5 months ago. And still, no baby! What the heck happened? Did they send the baby gifts or what?

Today the New York Post says Scarlett will marry father of the baby Romain Duriac in the next month. The whole thing should be a close call. They also say that the baby was due in March. I’m thinking maybe Scarlett just stayed pregnant to thwart all the tabloid speculation! Eventually, she will have to give birth. She has a lot of movies lined up!

As for “Lucy” no one’s seen it yet, and Universal is holding reviews back to the last minute. I have no idea why French producer-director Luc Besson is still hot in Hollywood. His resume is littered with disasters. Maybe people like saying his name. His last movie, “The Family,” was roundly panned and made only $36 million in the US. Of course, it was cheap. Relatively.

Box Office Weekend Nose Dive: $127 Mil this Year, $260 Mil Last Year This Week

2

The box office is way, way down. Last year in weekend 29, the box office total was approximately $260 million for the top 10 movies. This weekend, for the top 10, it’s around $127 million.

No new big releases this weekend didn’t help. “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” finished at number 1 for a second week with around $36 million.

Last year, “The Conjuring” took in $61 million.

The new release this week was “The Purge: Anarchy.” Total was $28 million. Last year “Despicable Me 2” did almost $40 million.

So, it’s trouble at the OK Corral.

Some good news: Jon Favreau’s little “Chef” crossed the $26 million. John Carney’s “Begin Again” is at almost $10 million. Richard Linklater’s “Boyhood” is almost at $2 million. People want to see good movies, if they can find them. It’s all about distribution.

This coming Friday brings two wide studio releases– Brett Ratner’s “Hercules” and Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman in “Lucy”– Woody Allen’s excellent “Magic in the Moonlight” in limited release.

Zach Braff Kickstarter Donors for “Wish I Was Here” Still Waiting for Perks

1

Zach Braff’s “Wish I Was Here” finally made it into theaters this weekend in a limited release. You may recall this film was launched as a Kickstarter project that raised $3.1 million from 46.520 donors. The donors, at different levels, were supposed to receive a variety of perks from a free t shirt to a live online screening hosted by Braff.

But now hundreds of them are voicing their disappointment on the Kickstarter comments page. Apparently, the online viewing has been a disaster. And the t-shirt, commonly described as “flimsy,” was sent to foreign donors with such a high value printed on its customs declaration that the fees for accepting it have almost equaled the donors’ original pledge.

Of course, similar problems happened when “Veronica Mars” was released this past winter. On that Kickstarter page, there are dozens of complaints about not receiving gift rewards or the inability to view the movie on the Flixster service.

But the “Wish I Was Here” furor is pretty strong right now. One common theme is a screw up over the online viewing of the movie prior to its release. International donors weren’t able to stream the whole film. There was short window in which the link to the film was “live.” But it didn’t account for time zone changes and something called “geo blocking.” Again, hundreds of donors were left high and dry.

A donor named Thomas Hempel wrote on July 13th: “Geoblocking? What the heck…I can’t remember that you had any problems taking money from outside the US. To be honest, I feel cheated.”

It’s also unclear whether the movie had all three of its showings. It seems like only one online hosted screening occurred. And again, many donors missed it, and then it was gone, with no repeats.

And the t shirt business didn’t make people happy when they had to fork over big customs fees for a shirt that was supposed to be a perk of their donation.

One fan named Ricardo wrote on the Kickstarter comments: “It feels like we were asked to a party with all the cool people, then got there and the bodyguard didn’t find our names on the guest list. The cool people get in and enjoy the party, we stay outside in the cold listening to them partying in the distance. It sucks :/”

Another fan who didn’t his merchandise wrote to Kings Road Merchandise. This is the response he got:

“Our site quoted a June ship time and we apologize if there was different communication around these orders and being a little bit behind on the schedule. We have 30,000 customers with different bundles. These bundles will be shipping at different times as our inventory dictates. We fulfill the physical items as the WIWH team fulfills all screenings and soundtracks with email notifications. Your order will ship as soon as possible and we thank you for your patience and understanding.”

That answer was met with scorn from customers who are used to dealing with Amazon and other online retailers.

All the comments can be found at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1869987317/wish-i-was-here-1/comments

On a personal note, if it makes the donors feel better, almost none of the links sent by studios to reviewers for any movie, work at all. Between the passwords, signing in, downloading plug-ins, it’s extremely aggravating. You wish the DVD was here!

James Garner Dies at 86, Iconic, Roguish Hero of “The Rockford Files”

James Garner, one of the great real Hollywood stars, has died at age 86. Garner was the roguish hero of the TV classic “The Rockford Files.” But before that he was a movie star in comedies with Doris Day, in westerns, and a string of mostly forgettable movies.

Garner found more luck on TV where he starred first as “Maverick,” a Western series that was the precursor to “Rockford,” just with tumbleweeds.

In “Rockford” he found his calling, and the show made him a giant. He won one Emmy Award for the role and was nominated several times. After “Rockford” he appeared with Sally Field in the romance “Murphy’s Law” for which he received an Oscar nomination. He also appeared in HBO’s “Barbarians at the Gate” and in the movie “The Notebook.” He played Maverick again in the Mel Gibson movie update.

He also had a run of TV commercials with Mariette Hartley for Polaroid that were incredibly popular. James Garner married Lois Clarke in 1956. It was his second marriage, and it lasted until his death. The Garners have one daughter, Gigi, a Hollywood manager.

Not kidding: the Emmy Awards had better get a big tribute together for Garner. There would be no shows with “Characters Wanted” or whatever if he hadn’t blazed that trail. From “Magnum” to “Burn Notice” and everything in between, it’s all influenced by “Rockford.”

Film Festival Wars: NY Cold Cocks Toronto With Early Announcements of Fincher, Anderson Movies

0

It’s war! This week the New York Film Festival asserted its position in the film festival wars and announced its opening night and centerpiece films two weeks early– David Fincher’s “Gone Girl” and Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Inherent Vice,” respectively. Cool! Except that the New York Film Festival announcements usually come after the news from the Toronto Film Festival, which hasn’t announced its lineup yet at all.

Indeed, New York’s announcement usually come around July 29th, a week or so after Toronto’s. But not this year. And that means there’s rumbling on the horizon. Toronto has been claim jumped. Two major titles are now set for New York. Trouble?

After last year’s festival circuit, Toronto decreed that no films that had just played at the quirky and expensive Telluride Film Festival– held a week before Toronto– could come north for premieres. “Gravity” and “12 Years a Slave” were 2013 Telluride hits, and Toronto– aka TIFF– didn’t want to be overshadowed again.

Of course, the issue with Telluride is that they don’t reveal their list until everyone arrives there around August 29th. People come by stage coach and G4 planes over treacherous Colorado mountains, having spent thousands of dollars on a hunch. So right now, no one knows anything.

But if the Fincher and Anderson movies were announced two weeks early by New York where does that leave the suddenly squeezed TIFF? Will New York allow those films to be shown in Toronto first? Unlikely. And if TIFF grabs a bunch of other big names– like “The Imitation Game” with Benedict Cumberbatch,” or Angelina Jolie’s “Unbroken,” or Bennett Miller’s “Foxcatcher”– a Cannes hit– where will that leave Telluride?

One film I’m looking forward to in Toronto is Shawn Levy’s “This is Where I Leave You,” with an all star cast, based on Jonathan Tropper’s novel, and set for release September 12th from Warner Bros. And another possibility is Nick Sandow’s “The Wannabe,” produced by Martin Scorsese, with no distributor yet but a lot of buzz.

Of course, the big difference between Toronto and the other fests is that they have audience and jury prizes. New York is obviously a high profile showcase–and it’s New York. Telluride is there so you can say you went to Telluride, and explain how you got there. Also, Tom Cruise lives there sometimes.

So let the games begin!

Two and a Half Men: Ashton Kutcher and Jon Cryer Get Married. Really

1

Waiting for the final season of “Two and a Half Men”? The CBS sitcom, awful in so many ways, has come up with a great plot to see themselves off the air. Ashton Kutcher and Jon Cryer will marry so they can raise a little boy they adopt together. Wretching? Yes. I know you are. The characters are not gay. But this will be some kind of nod to something– lunacy, stupidity, whatever. It makes no sense. But that’s what network TV is for.

When Charlie Sheen starred on “Two and a Half Men,” the so called comedy was notable for just being coarse and vulgar. But with Sheen gone, it’s just meandered into nothingness. Now, with nowhere to go, the writers have come up with this silliness. Sheen, whose character “died” two years ago, may return in some form. The faster this thing is off the air, the better. I guess they had to close it by adding a child since Angus T. Jones, who played Cryer’s son. left to become a religious zealot last year.

“Two and  a Half Men” ends its run without any Emmy awards (Cryer won one, but that was for being a good actor in a bad situation). By the way, wasn’t this already the plot of a bad Adam Sandler movie? Yes, it was.

Tom Cruise: Sucker Punched by Sumner Redstone’s Viacom in Novel About Katie Holmes Marriage

6

When Hollywood heartthrob Steven Weller pulls Maddy Freed out of obscurity for a starring part in his newest, Oscar-worthy film, she feels her career roaring onto the express track. Steven’s professional attention soon turns personal as they are thrown together amid Europe’s Old World charm, and Maddy allows herself to tumble headlong into a fairytale romance with the world’s most eligible bachelor. She knows there’s no truth to the gay rumors that have followed him for years.–From the Simon & Schuster description of “The Actress”

No one ever accused book publishers of synergy with their corporate cousins. In the case of Simon & Schuster, they either have a lot of editorial independence or no one’s figured out that they’re owned by the same company as Paramount Pictures.

True enough Viacom owns both companies. Under the Paramount banner, Viacom produces the “Mission: Impossible” movies for Tom Cruise quite famously. Cruise used to have a long standing deal at Viacom/Paramount until Sumner Redstone “fired” him during the couch-jumping years. But they made up subsequently, and Tom returned with the biggest “M:I” movie of all, “Ghost Protocol.”

I guess the Viacom folks don’t realize that Simon & Schuster has just published Amy Sohn’s roman a clef novel about a Tom Cruise like character who’s possibly gay and gets into a fake marriage with a much younger actress. (See the description above.)

“The Actress” was published on July 1st and even got a big feature review in the New York Times from former film critic Janet Maslin. Subtle as a mallet, the Times review headline read: “Marriage With Eyes Wide Shut: Amy Sohn’s ‘The Actress,’ a Tom Cruise Roman à Clef.”

Booklist reviews said: “This may well be Sohn’s breakout book for its salacious look at a star obviously modeled on Tom Cruise and for its magnetic themes of lust and fame.”

This week, “The Actress” is splashed across the National Enquirer, where it’s getting a lot of play telling the “true” story of Tom Cruise.

And it’s not even like “The Actress” was published by S&S imprint Atria, which specializes in celebrity books. It’s from the hardcore S&S label, also the publisher of Hillary Clinton’s “Hard Choices.”

Readers have so far not warmed to “The Actress.” But continued publicity marking it as the Tom Cruise story using different names could gin up interest. Maybe Paramount will option it for Cruise and Katie Holmes as a reunion movie!

Shakira Hits 100 Million Likes on Facebook, Becomes Most Likable Woman in the World

1

I didn’t write this. The whole thing verbatim comes from the press release, which I liked so much because it’s so insane. In a good way. Shakira is the most likable woman in the world. I don’t know her, but I agree! Hips don’t lie!

The official Facebook page of multi-platinum, multi Grammy Award-winning global recording artist and activist Shakira has remarkably reached 100 million likes, making her the first person ever to reach this incredible milestone. With an impressive fan base spanning the entire globe, this achievement classifies Shakira as the “Most Likable Woman in the World.” Shakira’s most recent photo during her visit to Rio de Janeiro for her 2014 FIFA World Cup closing ceremony performance has already collected over 3.5 million likes in only four days, becoming her most liked Facebook Post to date.

“I am honored and humbled about reaching this milestone, because it’s one that’s purely about connecting with my fans from all parts of the globe,” Shakira expresses. “Social media and specifically Facebook has helped myself and other artists bridge the gap between the stage and the audience.  We’ve been able to create a conversation, where both

artists and fans can share with one another their thoughts, achievements, the most important moments of their lives in photographs and videos, and have a real, ongoing dialogue.”

Justin Osofsky, Facebook’s VP of Global Operations and Media Partnerships, also acknowledges this magnificent achievement. “The combination of Shakira’s global appeal, her authentic engagement with fans and her use of Facebook as a multi-media platform has positioned her to achieve the incredible milestone of 100M fans.”

Shakira recently gave an electrifying performance of her newest single, “La La La (Brazil 2014)” featuring Carlinhos Brown, at the closing ceremony of the FIFA World Cupâ„¢ on July 13, 2014. The single “La La La (Brazil 2014)” featuring Carlinhos Brown is available on ONE LOVE, ONE RHYTHM: THE OFFICIAL 2014 FIFA WORLD CUPâ„¢ALBUM. This marked the third time Shakira performed at the FIFA World Cupâ„¢, making her the first artist to have three consecutive performances at the global event.  Her hit song “Waka Waka” was the last official song of the FIFA World Cupâ„¢ in 2010, and she performed her smash “Hips Don’t Lie” at the 2006 FIFA World Cupâ„¢ in Berlin.
