Steve Miller Rants About Record Company Exec: “I wanted to pull him by his necktie and kick him in the nuts”

0

Who knew that Steve Miller would be the guy to finally put everyone in their place? I just love it.

Now Rolling Stone has published his rant about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, by David Browne. You do understand Rolling Stone and Jann Wenner and the Hall are one in the same. It’s like Rolling Stone eating its own tail.

Anyway. Miller attacks the Rock Hall again. Just great. He also explains why he won’t give hsi record company another record.

“There is no record business. I record a lot of things. There is no record business. There’s no reason for me to spend any money producing stuff that a record company… All the people that were sitting in the front row tonight, like the guy that came from my record company, I wanted to pull him by his necktie and kick him in the nuts.”

I’m not sure who he means, exactly. He’s always been on Capitol Records, which is now part of the Universal Music Group. But that’s pretty recent. The old Capitol people are all gone. Steve Barnett runs the label. Lucian Grange runs UMG.

Miller says: “He’s made a billion dollars off my work over the last 50 years and the motherfucker just came over and introduced himself tonight. That cheery little thing. You know he won’t do any contract work, he won’t clean anything up, he won’t get anything done.”

I’m doing spit-takes. Some people call him Maurice. Indeed. For years, you know, Steve never had his photo on his albums. He didn’t believe in celebrity, just the music. I love that. And we still want to know about the Pompatus of Love.

He’s telling the truth. I’ve been telling you about the Rock Hall for years. He gets it.

Justin Bieber Meet-and-Greets Still Being Offered as Calvin Klein Prizes– Even Though They Were Cancelled

Is Justin Bieber still having meet-and-greets even after he cancelled them? While fans are roiled over refunds for expensive premium VIP seats, Bieber’s sponsor– Calvin Klein– is offering a chance to meet him backstage.

Of course, the next big question is whether the Biebs will do a show in North Carolina on July 6th in Greensboro. Maybe by then North Carolina will have straightened out their bathroom situation.

Paris Jackson in NYC: She Gets a Motley Crue Tattoo On Her Inside Lower Lip

0

Well, she did visit the Whitney Museum. But Michael Jackson’s 18 year old daughter also did something else over the weekend in New York. She got herself a tattoo on her inside lower lip. The word “MOTLEY” is now inscribed forever. Tommy Lee of Motley Crue immediately approved on Twitter, as you’ll see below. Paris is starting to get a lot of tattoos. As Michael once sang, Don’t stop til you get enough. And Paris, it’s enough, really. If you want to be on TV, that one’s going to be hard to cover up. Paris also expresses on her social media that she misses her 26 year old boyfriend, who has Confederate tattoos.

TV: “Billions” Ends Season 1 with a Classic Showdown, “Vinyl” Finds Its Rhythm At Last

0

If “Billions” isn’t the show to beat come Emmy time, I’ll eat my Kangol hat with ear muffs. The season ended tonight on Showtime like a great episode of “Dallas” (JR vs. Cliff), dipped in Shakespeare and John Wayne westerns. Paul Giamatti is the shoo in for Best Actor in a Drama as Chuck Rhoades, but that doesn’t mean that Damian Lewis as Bobby Axelroad is second rate. Far from it.

As the ten episodes have run along, creators Brian Koppelman and David Levien and their team have just kept ramping up the tension of Chuck (Cliff), Axe (JR) and Wendy (Sue Ellen) until it all reached the breaking point tonight. Malin Akerman is equal to all of them as Bobby’s with-it wife, sharper than you ever thought. This foursome will play a huge part in Emmy noms this year. And this final episode — with its shiny Maserati and S&M blackmail– cinched the whole deal.

“Billions” is what I would call a ‘clean’ show– not clean as opposed to dirty, but a clean watch, clearly delineated. You don’t have to know anything about high finance to follow it. It’s easy to root for both Chuck and Bobby at the same time, and you’re not sure who’s the hero or who’s the villain. The big show down at the end of the 10th episode was a hoot, too– like a great western or even Alexis and Krystal duke-ing it out in the pool. A summer run of “Billions” should turn it into a watercooler show. I’m already savoring the Season 2 return.

Over on HBO, “Vinyl” has had a lot of problems since its sensational two hour start with Martin Scorsese. Now Terence Winter, the head writer (and a great one) is leaving. I’m sorry to see him go. But for weeks, mostly, “Vinyl” went nowhere, there was no one to root for, and it was hard to care what was going to happen. Last week was an improvement but tonight’s “Rock and Roll Queen” episode suddenly crystallized the show.

Now in the penultimate episode of the season, they get it! This episode was actually about the music. It rang true. Before tonight, “Vinyl” felt like it was being made by outsiders. In “Rock and Roll Queen,” the chaos settled down. I absolutely love this character played by Annie Parisse– I can’t believe she isn’t based on someone I know from the music biz. Bobby Cannavale was finally allowed to stop snorting coke and having his eyes bug out. Juno Temple and Val Emmich are solid keepers. (I like the story of Jamie and her aunt (Jill Larson). James Jagger gets better and better. And Ray Romano and Max Casella run the show.

Some things bug me about “Vinyl.” The music is great, but some of it is so not of that period– doo wop, “Windmills of Your Mind,” etc. Last night when Jack Quaid discovered disco, and had the dj play that Philly Soul type song in the club, “Vinyl” sounded like they were in the right spot. They are trying to force punk (NY Dolls- Patti Smith etc) a little too soon, frankly. In season 2, they should be looking for “Pillow Talk” before they get to Blitzkrieg Bop.” All kudos to Carl Franklin and Deborah Cahn for “Rock and Roll Queen.” More like that, please. (PS They also started bringing the Finestras back together. Gotta be.)

One last thing–they got something very right tonight. In 1973, “American Graffiti” was huge. There was a big nostalgia wave for Fifties music. Paul Ben-Victor’s Maury Gold — who runs the show’s version of KTel Records– is the only one who knows what he’s doing. Nice touch.

R&B: Drake — Snubbing Jay Z and Tidal Announces New AppleMusic Album, Release Date

0

The strains among the leaders of hip hop and R&B show more and more each day as artists have to choose between Jay Z’s Tidal and other services.

Drake has just announced a new album called “Views from the 6” for April 29th. It’s his first official album for Republic Records in almost three years, although he’s down two unofficial ones and the big hit “Hotline Bling” since then.

Drake’s newest single features Jay Z and Kanye West as “The Throne.” But that doesn’t mean Drake is putting his album on Tidal. “Views from the 6” will be an AppleMusic exclusive. Drake and his manager Adel H. Nur (who DJs as FuturethePrince) have had issues with Tidal before over streaming of live shows etc.

Drake (real name Aubrey Drake Graham) has a couple of singles out right now, but neither of them has lived up to “Hotline Bling.” Written on the foundation of Timmy Thomas’s 1973 hit “Why Can’t We Live Together,” “Hotline Bling” will be the song that defines Drake for the rest of his career.

Paris Jackson and Pals Take in “Finding Neverland” on Broadway: “Moved Me To Tears”

0

Paris Jackson celebrated her 18th birthday and whirlwind trip to New York with a performance of “Finding Neverland” on Broadway. How appropriate since Peter Pan and Neverland were the constant themes of her dad– Michael Jackson’s– life. Her pals included Prudence Brando, granddaughter of Marlon. Paris loved the show– a spy sent me this posting:

Box Office: Melissa McCarthy’s “The Boss” Is Kryptonite to “Batman v Superman”

0

I didn’t want this headline to be Melissa McCarthy Shows “Batman v Superman” who’s “The Boss.” But she did, kinda. “The Boss” nosed out the superheroes by $100,000 and finished the weekend with $23.5 million v “BvS” with $23.4 million.

It was “thisclose.”

But “BvS” edged closer to $300 million– which it should pass on Tuesday night. The caped crusaders are also close to crossing the $800 worldwide total, which was their goal. Whew! They made it!

More to come…

Andrea from “Beverly Hills 90210” Voted President of Actors Union by Acclamation

0

The White Shadow, Lou Grant, Patty Duke (and her TV father William Schallert) and even Ronald Reagan have all been president at one or another of the Screen Actors Guild.

Now ‘Andrea Zuckerman’, bespectacled and dull, from “Beverly Hills 92010,” editor of the student newspaper, has been elected by acclamation as the new president of SAG-AFTRA. Gabrielle Carteris succeeds Ken Howard, who sadly passed away last month. Carteris will fill out Howard’s two year term, moving up from Executive Vice President.

“I am deeply honored to be chosen by the SAG-AFTRA National Board to serve the union and its members as president,” said Carteris. “Ken was a great union leader, friend and mentor. He left big shoes to fill, but with the support of the national board of directors and the membership, I am committed to improving the lives of all SAG-AFTRA members.”

Rebecca Damon was elected Executive Vice President, which means women now run the actors’ unions.

So how long before the rest of the gang takes? Dylan? Brandon? Brenda? Donna? I’ll bet Steve, Kelly, and David already have plans for the prom, er, the SAG Awards.

Steve Miller Is Absolutely Correct About the Rock Hall Regarding Ticket Prices, Respect for the Inductees, Licensing, Etc

0

Steve Miller did the right thing last night. He spoke up about the shabby treatment of the inductees at the Rock Hall of Fame, the licensing agreements, etc.

The reason former inductees NEVER return to the Rock Hall induction ceremony is because there are no free tickets. Well, there are SOME free tickets– for big rock stars who are friends of Jann Wenner like ex Beatles or Stones, if Bob Dylan wanted to come, and so on.

But for regular musicians who’ve somehow been inducted, they must pay and pay and pay.

If you perform on the show, the Rock Hall expects you to sign over the rights to the performance gratis, in perpetuity. This was a big issue from the 25th anniversary show at Madison Square Garden. Those performances were turned into a DVD box set. Many of the artists held up the release so they could get their royalties.

The Rock Hall Foundation puts on that concert every year– not the museum in Cleveland. The Foundation pays it CEO Joel Peresman over $400,000 every year. It gives no money to indigent artists, doesn’t help anyone, doesn’t even donate money to MusiCares. They are loathed by other music foundations.

This year no women, no R&B (black) stars from music’s legacy, no instrumentalists or sidemen or producers were inducted except for Bert Berns. The only black people inducted were from NWA. They may not have performed when they were told the licensing would be turned over to the Rock Hall. Dr. Dre and Ice Cube are too smart, and they don’t care about the repercussions.

That the members of the Steve Miller Band and their spouses, nor any other Steve Miller guests were given tickets is typical. There are countless stories every year of people being snubbed, or treated like dirt, by Wenner, or Peresman. There was some control over this when Ahmet Ertegun was alive. But since he died, Wenner has just run it the way he wants to. There are no checks or balances.

So bravo Steve Miller. He did the right thing. He told the truth about what goes on. And just think: he’s been eligible since 1990. He had to wait 26 years. Chicago waited 21 years at least. Deep Purple, too. Cheap Trick, since 2005. They watched Wenner’s pets leapfrog over them. How can they take this seriously?

Still not in the Rock Hall– oh forget, you know, you’ve been told a thousand times.

Exclusive: Paris Jackson Hits New York with Gal Pals Including Marlon Brando’s Granddaughter

0

Welcome to New York, Paris Jackson!

For her 18th birthday, Michael Jackson’s sharp-as-a-tack daughter has arrived in Gotham with two gal pals from L.A. One of them is Prudence Brando, granddaughter of Marlon and daughter of Miko (a great guy and dear friend of Michael’s).

Girls just want to have fun, but they’re 18 so they have to be careful. This is the big city, girls.

I’m told they’re staying with a family friend of the Jacksons. Paris may have meetings with her new manager, Rick Yorn, who also manages Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese. She signed with him a few weeks ago.

Yes, Paris’s friends and family were unhappy she’d gotten close to a sketchy guy in L.A. named Michael Snoddy. The 26 year old sports Confederate flag tattoos. But I think it’s a good sign she’s here with girlfriends. Paris is too smart to get involved with real craziness. She’s a smart kid with a lot of potential.

Paris, get over to Serendipity and get some frozen hot chocolate. Try and see “Hamilton.” I’m sure they’ll let you in!
