OJ Simpson Tells Parole Board: “I’ve never lived a criminal life” and “I’m a conflict-free guy”

0

UPDATE Despite having stood trial for killing two people– one of them his ex wife and mother of two of his children– OJ Simpson told a parole board today: “I’ve never lived a criminal life” and “I’m a conflict free guy.” I don’t know about you, but I did spit take when he said these things. Simpson has insisted to the parole board that he’s a good guy, a good Christian, and just “wants to get back to his kids and his friends.”

+++++

OJ Simpson’s parole hearing in Nevada is taking place right now. He’s been in jail for 9 years for a robbery gone wrong when he tried to back– with a weapon–souvenirs he thought belonged to him.

He never went to jail for the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman in 1994. He was acquitted by a criminal jury but held accountable for them by a civil jury.

Everyone cashed in the OJ Simpson murders, from OJ himself to a cast of characters including Kato Kaelin, Faye Resnick and even Kris Kardashian Jenner who loves to use tidbits from that story to fuel her celebrity.

Even OJ’s sister flogged a book proposal at the time. Nicole Brown’s family sold videos of Nicole and OJ’s wedding. Nicole’s sisters started a charity and ran it into the ground.

Ryan Seacrest Returning to Host an “American Idol” No One Wants, with Katy Perry as Judge

0

“American Idol” is coming back, there is nothing we can do about it. Today, it was announced officially that Ryan Seacrest was returning as host, this time on ABC. But really, we knew that almost a day after Seacrest joined Kelly Ripa on ABC’s “Live.” It was part of his deal.

But why is “American Idol” coming back? No one wants it, no one. Once a ratings juggernaut– 2006 was its high mark year– “Idol” limped to its conclusion in 2016 with 11 million viewers. And they may not have actually been aware the TV was on. “Idol” went off a cliff in 2014 and never recovered. Between 2011 and 2016, 15 million viewers left. They are not coming back.

Can you name the winners of “American Idol”? Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Adam Lambert, Jennifer Hudson (was not the winner her year), Fantasia are the names that come to mind. In those early days, “Idol” winners went directly to Clive Davis, who made them into stars. But as the years went on, the winners weren’t very idol-worthy. Some, like Phillip Phillips, had one off hits. But after Jordin Sparks in 2007, the winners are not memorable. Anyone know
Scotty McCreery?
Candice Glover?
Caleb Johnson?
Nick Fradiani?
Trent Harmon?

No.

And to make matters worse, NBC’s The Voice has signed up Jennifer Hudson and Kelly Clarkson for the next two rounds. So if you’re so nostalgic for “American Idol” you can watch the former winners right there. Katy Perry? We love her. But it’s unclear what her contribution ratings wise will be.

“American Idol”? It’s good for me. There will be plenty of headlines about the ratings. But for the audience? It seems like a waste of time.

Julia Roberts, Once Queen of the Movie Box Office, Heads to TV with Amazon, HBO Series

0

Julia Roberts is throwing in the towel on movies.

Once the queen of the Big Screen and box office, Roberts is facing the same dilemma of a lot of actresses between ages 50 and 60. There are no roles.

So Roberts has made a deal with Amazon for a series with a two season commitment. “Homecoming” will be created by Sam Esmail of “Mr. Robot” fame.

Roberts also has a series in development at HBO.

Isabella Rossellini said in a recent interview that there is no work for actresses from age 45 to 60. They’re too young to be ingenues and not old enough to play grand dames. Roberts, who turns 50 in October, hasn’t had a hit movie in eons.

Roberts’ last feature film was the dud “Money Monster.” She had an Oscar nomination for “August: Osage County” four years ago. But her heyday of top-lining hits was in the ’90s and ended with “Erin Brockovich” in 2000. Commercials and real estate have kept her going.

“Homecoming” sounds promising. Esmail is the guy right now. Look forward to seeing what they put together.

Fleetwood Mac Will Be MusiCares Person of the Year for Radio City Grammy Tribute

0

These aren’t just Rumours: Fleetwood Mac will be the MusiCares Person of the Year recipients this year. The Grammy centric all star celebration will take place January 26th at Radio City Music Hall because the Grammys are back in New York.

Hats off to Irving Azoff. The reunited Mac just played his big mega concerts in Los Angeles, and are heading here t0 CitiField this month to join Azoff’s other superstar acts for his Concerts East– with The Eagles, Steely Dan, Earth Wind & Fire, the Doobies, and Journey.

Fleetwood Mac has been together in some form since before I was in high school. But in 1975, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham joined Mick Fleetwood, John McVie and Christine McVie, and magie happened. A zillion records sold later, from “Rumours” and beyond, the Macs have proven to be everlasting.

Now we’ll wait and see which performers sing which Mac songs. Courtney Love should do “Silver Springs,” for sure.

The evening’s tribute chairs include Shelli and Irving Azoff, Dorothy and Martin Bandier, Kristin and James Dolan. Grammy chief Neil Portnow will preside, with aplomb. Tickets should sell out like immediately if they haven’t already!

Exclusive: Harry Styles, Movie Star, Got Very Wet on “Dunkirk” But “There Was No Singing” on Set

0

Harry Styles is a movie star. The former One Direction singer has an integral role in Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk.” It’s not dialogue heavy, but it’s just enough that he makes for a strong on screen presence. I had a feeling about this a while ago. Harry’s self titled debut album was not a smash hit– just under 300,000 copies in the US. Those are not Adele, Beyonce, or Drake numbers.

But Harry Styles pops off the screen. And in person, he’s extremely well mannered and pleasant. Now that it’s proven he can really act, just watch for directors and producers to think of musicals for him.

In “Dunkirk,” there is no crooning, however. I asked him last night at Warner Bros.’ swanky Rainbow Room premiere dinner if he broke into song on set at all? There are plenty of scenes with Harry and crowds of young soldiers scrambling to survive the bombing– often while they’re under water.

“No singing,” Harry told me, not even humming. He took his role seriously. Did he get wet? “A lot,” he said, “but it was worth it.” Styles has the admiration of his fellow actors, by the way, starting with Cillian Murphy (pronounced Killian, btw) who was pleasantly surprised by the “Sign of the Times” singer’s talent. “When they first said Harry Styles, you wondered…And then, look at him!”

The “Dunkirk” premiere put a nice exclamation point on Warner Bros.’ super summer that began with “Wonder Woman” flying higher than anyone could have predicted. (The failure of “King Arthur” is not discussed.) “Dunkirk” is that rare mixture of commercial hit and awards getter, so all the execs were out in force– Kevin Tsujihara, Sue Kroll, Toby Emmerich– plus Time Warner chief Jeff Bewkes and even former Sony Pictures chief-now Snapchatter Michael Lynton. Brenda Vaccaro– waiting to hear if her “Gypsy” show on Netflix is renewed (it should be) made a rare appearance, and I ran into “Soprano’s” creator David Chase with wife Denise, Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford, Oscar nominee Lucas Hedges, and Spike and Tonya Lee.

Review: “Dunkirk” Is Studio Hit, Oscar Film, With Surprise Star Turn by Harry Styles and Young, Hot Cast

0

Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk” is going to be a big big hit this weekend. And next. If you love movies, this one is going to blow you away. That 98 rating on Rotten Tomatoes is well earned. Nolan– whose movies I very fond of– will finally get his Oscar bows this year. He’s made something like a tone poem action film, as if Terrence Malick (the original Malick, who was so good) made a World War II movie.

There’s an older cast who are as expected, perfection: Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy.  There’s a younger of almost all unknowns except for singer Harry Styles, I had a feeling Styles would do well as an actor, and I was right. I really feel he takes to it more naturally than the role of Pop Star.

The young guys who struggle mightily to survive the Battle of Dunkirk are unanimously good, starting with total newcomer Fionn Whitehead, who’s 20, and has never made a movie before. He makes a startling debut. All the others are terrific and handsome (some look like they’ve walked out of Irish sweater commercials). You will recognize one fellow, Michael Fox, who played Andy– the newer footman– on “Downton Abbey.”

The characters show themselves in time. But the real stars of the movie are Dunkirk (or Dunkerque, as it is properly known in France), director Nolan, and Hans Zimmer, whose score is literally a main character of the film. It’s absolutely essential, gorgeous, and unrelenting. Cinematography by Hoyte Van Hoytema cannot be overpraised. From the moment it begins, “Dunkirk” presents itself as an unfolding masterwork.

There’s some trademark Nolan-esque time shifting, but it’s easy enough to follow. All you need to know is that Britain must get its army home from France across the English Channel while being bombed into oblivion. The future of World War II and success of any kind hinges on this mission.

Nolan wrote “Dunkirk,” using fictitious characters to illuminate historically documented events. It’s an ingenious screenplay that cuts among three different scenarios which ultimately intersect. I’ve heard some comments that say there isn’t enough backstory or characterization, but I disagree. Nolan has cast the movie so well, and focused on the battle so intimately that you come to care for everyone. “Dunkirk” has an edge of the seat feel to it all the way though because Nolan has drawn all the characters so well.

There’s been a lot of talk about ‘no big movies,” especially after smaller films like “Spotlight” and “Moonlight” have taken home the two Oscars for Best Picture. “Dunkirk” rides to the rescue, and will most certainly garner a basket of nominations this season, likely to win the gold statue without too much trouble. And well it should.

Ed Sheeran Jousts with Social Media After “Game of Thrones,” Archives Twitter Account, Stays on Instagram

0

Ed Sheeran caused a commotion on the internet Tuesday. It seemed like he pulled off social media by shutting down his Twitter account. Did he have a thin skin after his “Game of Thrones” appearance instigated lots of crazy comments by trolls? Maybe.

But Sheeran’s account is back, with a proviso: he’s not using that account anymore, but has directed everyone to Instagram. Why? Who knows? Anyway, on Instagram, he’s got photos from “Thrones” with thousands and thousands of comments good and bad.

Even so social media has its ups and downs. Sheeran’s Instagram account is called @teddysphotos. Unfortunately, no one from his camp set up a Twitter account with that handle, so some smart Alec has jumped into the fray and started one for him with that name. Nature abhors a vacuum, you know.

The “Thrones” deluge has not deterred Sheeran from from more TV appearance.  He’s announced an appearance on “The Simpsons” for this fall.

And just in case you were wondering, Sheeran gets the last laugh. His “Divide” album has sold 750,000 copies including paid downloads, streaming aside.  The album is set to win the Grammy for Album of the Year, and he’s likely to get either Record of the Year or Song of the Year for “Castle on the Hill.” His “Shape of You” might have more trouble because of its authorship issues.

But either way, Ed Sheeran is going to be Prince of the Grammys. Snarky comments will be irrelevant. Living well is the best revenge as photos from his vacation with a beautiful girl bear out!

Caitlyn Jenner Crosses Paths with Kim Kardashian Ex Kris Humphries: From Father-in-Law to Ex-Mother-in-Law

0
Sunday night in St Paul, Minnesota: Caitlyn Jenner came face to face with her former son-in -law, Kris Humphries. You remember Kris! He was married to Kim Kardashian for 72 days. This means Kim was married to a man with her mother’s name.
At the time, Bruce Jenner was Kris’s husband, and Kris Humphries’ father-in-law. Now Bruce is Caitlyn, divorced from Kris, and Kris Humphries’ ex- mother-in-law.  It wasn’t clear if anyone at the Starkey Hearing Foundation Gala in St. Paul understood  that. The result was a near miss disaster on the red carpet.
“First the red carpet director had to orchestrate their limos so Kris and Caitlyn didn’t get out at the same time, which almost happened,” said a source. “Then inside the dinner, Caitlyn finally got up and went over to say hello to Kris. After all, she was his father in law. Now she’s his ex mother inlaw.”
Caitlyn also caused a commotion in the ladies room during the dinner. I’m told so many women followed her in there that she couldn’t get into a stall. Finally someone yelled, “For chrissakes, she’s got to pee!”
Jenner didn’t talk much about Bruce’s old pal OJ Simpson maybe getting paroled this week. She did talk at length to anyone who’d listen about maybe running for the Senate in Califorinia, by the way. She said she wants to help the transgender community. But when someone asked, “with public funds?” she backed off.
This, by the way, is not the plot of Part 10 of “Twin Peaks: The Return.” But it could be!

Leonardo DiCaprio Readies for St. Tropez Gala: Lowest Ticket Price $10,436 for Preferred Seating “Slightly Further Back with Good Views of Stage”

0
We’re just 8 days away from Leonardo DiCaprio’s annual St. Tropez gala to raise money for the environment. Since his LDF Foundation doesn’t file a Form 990, no one really knows how much money comes in or where it goes. And last year, the event was underwritten by Julius Baer Bank of Switzerland, which was fined $547 MILLION by the US Government for tax evasion in 2016.
This past June, Jorge Luis Arzuaga, an Argentine national and former managing director at Julius Baer, pleaded guilty to a money laundering conspiracy in the Brooklyn federal court. He admitted to arranging transfers of over $25 million in bribes and kickbacks from 2010 to 2015.
DiCaprio himself is still caught up in the 1MDB Malaysia fund scandal that involved financing of his movie “The Wolf of Wall Street.” Those investigations continue as Leo was forced recently to return paintings and jewelry he received from the principals in that scheme.
For the July 26th gala, Leo is offering different sets of tickets and prices if you’re going to be in that neck of the woods.

“Game of Thrones” Sets Record with 10 Million Viewers Sunday Night, “Twin Peaks” Falls Back to Earth

0

Sunday night ratings: “Game of Thrones” set an HBO record with its sixth season opener. They had over 10 million viewers. Think of it: over on CBS, “60 Minutes” had around 5 million viewers, on NBC Megyn Kelly had 3 million. And that was free TV.

Over on cable, no one watched much of anything else. The next highest rated show for Sunday night was the series “Power” on Starz, with 1.7 million viewers.

At 9pm, while “Game of Thrones” was eating TV alive, “Twin Peaks” lost the viewers it had picked up after Part 8. Part 9 was so dreadful that everyone who sampled the show based on good reviews for Part 8, left. “Twin Peaks” scored 264,000 viewers. More people live in my neighborhood.

In case you were one of those 264,000, then we can talk: Really? Really? No one on this show knows how to plot or tell a story in a way that makes sense. Jim Belushi, who I usually like, was terrible. Also, I have no idea what the people in his story pod are doing. Naomi Watts deserves a trophy for investing in dross every week.

Also, the random violence is not funny or interesting. Richard Horne beat up his grandmother and called her the ‘c’ word. It wasn’t arch or entertaining. And since we’re not sure who he is or what the heck is going on, who cares? Eight more weeks. Good lord.
