Back to the Future with a New Film Starring Alec Baldwin as John DeLorean: Famed Dead Car Inventor’s Son Now Lives in Abject Poverty

0

Nowadays people associate the DeLorean with the sci-fi travel device in the 1985 film “Back to the Future,” which was originally going to be a refrigerator according to the film’s writer Bob Gale, who’s interviewed in “Framing John DeLorean,” a terrific film directed by Sheena M. Joyce and Don Argott (“The Art of the Steal”) that screened at the Tribeca Film Festival. (Alec Baldwin stars as DeLorean.)

A fleet of DeLorean sports cars pulled up in front of the SVA Theater Tuesday at the film’s premiere and momentarily took the spotlight away from Baldwin and his gorgeous wife Hilaria.

“Framing DeLorean” is a mixed bag; it’s part documentary and part narrative with Baldwin featured in reenactments of scenes from the car designer’s life. Even more curious isI behind-the-scenes footage of the actor donning prosthetics and wig to get into character, all the while speculating on the car designer’s life, behavior and motivations.

There’s money, power, politics, drugs, scandal, sex, fast cars and all the elements of an action-packed film. But up to now all attempts to capture the man’s life on film have failed. The film manages to pull together all the surrealistic aspects of the man’s life in a cinematic language that works.

As the film reveals, DeLorean was unrepentant to the end, even after a drug bust and accusations of defrauding investors. And various plastic surgeries, including a bad chin implant, left him expressionless. DeLorean’s still a cipher but “Framing John DeLorean” directors Joyce and Argott, a couple in real life, have done a terrific job of capturing the genius but loony nature of their subject’s life and leaving final judgment to the audience.

Audiences, especially those old enough to remember the DeLorean trial, will notice that his ex-wife, Cristina Ferrare, a top model at the time and played by Morena Baccarin in the film, is not interviewed in the movie. She left DeLorean the day after he was acquitted of cocaine trafficking.

DeLorean historian Tamir Ardon told me at the press conference earlier in the day that Ferrare didn’t want to participate in the film. “I have known her for 15 years now, and I have spoken with her privately about things, and she just was not interested in that part of the movie. Luckily we were able to capture the essence through a lot of wonderful archival and obviously her kids had input.”

DeLorean’s children, Zachary, who was adopted, and Kathryn, are interviewed in the film and are still emotionally scarred by their late father’s notoriety. (DeLorean died in 2005.) What’s shocking is the abject poverty in which Zachary lives, as the movie reveals the hovel in which he resides that contrasts so dramatically with the luxury in which he and his sister were brought up and which is shown in archival footage.

In the end, Ardon thinks the car designer was a genius and admires much about him. “Thirty-five years later there are DeLoreans on the road with over 800,000 miles on them,” he told me. The film reveals the technical glitches of the early cars, manufactured in North Ireland by workers with no experience in car production. He says this is overdone..

“The quality of the cars, when they first came to the states, you have to remember that it is a brand new car company. The brand new work force. Assembling cars for the first time you are always going to be have problems,” he told me. “Even established car makers today have problems with cars when they first come out. By the time they got into a year two of production, they had actually worked out a lot of the issues, like the doors issues, they installed new striker pins, making sure that people were not getting stuck in the cars.”

As for the film’s title, it’s intentionally a tongue-in-cheek play on words said director Don Argott on the red carpet.

”It’s kind of how we portray people, how we frame them. And because this is a film that because it’s so unique in its approach, we felt like it also needed a clever title to help audiences understand what we were trying to do because, right out of the gate, it’s Alec Baldwin in a make up trailer? What the fuck is this?  I don’t understand what’s going on here?”

“Framing John Delorean” opens June 7.

Madonna Scales Back, Makes Wise Decision to Tour “Madame X” in Prestige Theaters and Not Arenas Where She Can Sell Out Easily

0

Madonna has made a very wise decision. She’ll tour her “Madame X” album this fall in prestige theaters, and not in arenas.

Live Nation’s very brilliant Arthur Fogel made the announcement, and he’s right on, too. By playing theaters Madonna will cause a commotion, make people fight to see her, and not have to worry about people like…me…writing about her not filling Madison Square Garden. Smart, smart, smart.

Plus, the first shows will be in Brooklyn at BAM at the Howard Gilman Opera House. Very classy. She’ll play there for 7 nights in September, then head to Chicago’s Chicago Theater, and then the Wiltern in Los Angeles. More dates will be announced for Las Vegas, Boston, Philadelphia, Miami, Lisbon, London and Paris. The whole thing could end in a Broadway house– my guess– or at the Beacon Theater.

It’s unclear what the ticket prices will be, but re-sellers will drive them up to a thousand bucks, no doubt. And also unknown if there will be bundles with the “Madame X” album to drive up first and second week sales of the music and ensure Madge a number 1 debut. I would think so.

Given the look of Madonna’s “Medellin” video, this seems like a great idea. “Madame X” is going to look smashing in a theater. And why fight with arenas when you’ve already conquered that…ahem… arena?

PS No word yet, but Maluma as opening act?

Daytime Emmys Divide Between “Young and the Restless” (Best Drama, Writing, Directing) and “General Hospital” (Three of Four Main Acting Awards)

0

The Daytime Emmys were held tonight in Pasadena, and the winners divided between “Young and the Restless” and “General Hospital.”

“Y&R” picked by Best Drama, Best Directing, and Best Writing. “General Hospital” took three of the four main acting awards. They should have taken the fourth– best actress- but it seems like their two nominees crossed each other out. Jacqueline Wood of “The Bold and the Beautiful” was the beneficiary of that confusion. Maura West of “General Hospital”–who’s won a few times– got knocked out.

The “GH” acting awards went to Max Gail and Vernee Watson as best supporting actors. They both come from prime time and their work on an Alzheimer’s story has been lovely. Maurice Benard, who plays Gail’s father on the show, won Best Actor. “GH” won a fourth acting award for Hailey Erin in the category of Younger Actress. Kyler Pettis won the male equivalent for “Days of our Lives.”

Other awards went to Rachael Ray, “Live with Kelly and Ryan,” and Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford. Judge Judy got a lifetime achievement award, given to her by Amy Poehler.

Meantime, all the soaps are in a ratings decline at the moment. “Y&R” was down to 4.1 million viewers for the most recent week available, and “GH” is at 2.3 million. There are only four soaps left on the air, and if they don’t get it together they’re going to wind up like The Night King and his friends.

Bruce Springsteen On His Emmy Campaign, Performs in Hollywood, Interviewed by Martin Scorsese, Jokes: “I’m here begging complete strangers to vote for me”

0

Tonight’s big ticket in LA was for two New Yorkers with new ties to Netflix: Bruce Springsteen and Martin Scorsese. The latter interviewed the former for the Emmy campaign for Springsteen’s “Live on Broadway” Netflix showing. Scorsese — who spoke with Bruce at Raleigh Studios — is now in the Netflix family as well, thanks to “The Irishman” being released this fall.

So it was a New York night in Hollywood, and the two men recalled that they’d actually met in 1975 at the Roxy nightclub on Sunset Boulevard via Robert De Niro. Bruce told Marty that his favorite line in any film is “You talkin’ to me?” from “Taxi Driver.” Scorsese revealed: “We still don’t know where that line came from.”

Introduced by Netflix’s Ted Sarandos, the pair talked about creativity and about Catholicism among other subjects. Bruce revealed that he’d recently stopped into his old Freehold, New Jersey church because he’d was compelled to go inside. A funeral was going on, but he stayed and sat in the back. He said the deceased — who was eulogized– “sounded like a nice man” but did pronounce the experience as “a bit bizarre.”

Springsteen also announced that he’s written a new album for the E Street Band. But we won’t be hearing it or seeing them on tour until 2020 because on June 14th the Boss is releasing a new solo album.

Netflix showed 45 minutes of the two hour “Springsteen on Broadway” show, which will undoubtedly be nominated for an Emmy and likely win one.  Among the guests, besides Emmy voters and press, were Jimmy Kimmel, Diane Warren, Irwin Winkler. Jimmy Iovine, and Phil Rosenthal.  Springsteen dazzled the crowd by playing two songs, “Dancing in the Dark,” and “Land of Hope and Dreams,” on his guitar. Regarding the Emmys, Bruce quipped that even with his illustrious career, “I’m here begging complete strangers to vote for me.”

Anyone who saw the Springsteen show on Broadway will be blown away by its translation to TV, that’s for sure. The 45 minutes is just a teaser for what was a once in a lifetime theater experience.

Meanwhile, Bruce has a new album coming June 14th, a new single now, and on Saturday night he joined E Streeter Little Steven van Zandt on stage at LA’s Saban Theater for three numbers– driving that crowd into a frenzy. Bruce is leaving no prisoners as he takes Hollywood. We’ll see him at the Emmys!

Box Office Blowout: “Avengers Endgame” Has Second Biggest 2nd Weekend Record, Now at $620 Million, Rom Com “Long Shot” Wipes Out with Just $10 Million

0

It’s good news and bad news at the box office.

“Avengers: Endgame” took in $145.8 million for its second weekend, the 2nd biggest 2nd weekend in history. It fell short of breaking the record set by “The Force Awakens” and dropped 60%. Cry me a river, yes. But “Endgame” may not have what it takes to break some big records, just some small ones.

Still, compared to regular movies…

“Long Shot” made just $10 million. It success was a long shot as a rom-com starring Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen. It got decent reviews. But it also seemed a lot like “Knocked Up” from its trailer and ads. Rogen was on Colbert Friday night and talked about his cannabis business, being high while making movies, and seemed high during the interview. It was off putting. Rogen is 37 already. Grow up. I know he’s smarter than that. I haven’t seen “Long Shot” but it seems like something that will on an airplane very soon.

“Dumbo” is the rare domestic Disney failure– just $109 million in the US with a cost of $170 million. Luckily in China, Mexico, and other foreign territories the movie’s failings didn’t matter. Total foreign: $229 million.

Adam Sandler’s Return to Host “Saturday Night Live” After 24 Years Was Brilliant, Watch His Two Best Performances

0

Adam Sandler left “Saturday Night Live” 24 years ago after he was fired, he sang last night, by Lorne Michaels. Then he went off to earn $4 billion at the box office with his movies, some good, some awful. He sang about it last night in a brilliant return that was mostly non political but tapped into nostalgia for 90s “SNL” with just the right nuance. He’s sung his “Chris Farley” song before, but it was a surprise last night and extra poignant on the show. Sandler has a Netflix movie about to debut and a stand up tour, but he didn’t explicitly plug them. He was more interested in mentioning twice how happy he was his wife and kids were in the audience and could see him return to his career-starting job. Jimmy Fallon and Kristen Wiig made surprise appearances, and they were excellent as well.

Diana Ross Gets Supremely Bad Treatment from TSA in New Orleans: “Was over the top! Makes me wanna cry! I am feeling violated- I still feel her hands between my legs!”

0

Diana Ross says she was “treated like shit” by the TSA in New Orleans this morning. On Twitter, she posted news that she’d been treated like royalty at the New Orleans jazz fest only to be “treated like shit” at the airport.

“OK so on one hand I’m treated like royalty in New Orleans and at the airport I was treated like shit…Let me be clear , Not the peiple or Delta BUT TSA , was over the top !! Makes me want to cry !!!….Its not what was done but how , I am feeling violated – I still feel her hands between my legs , front and back ( saying to me it her job ,) WOW!!really mixed emotions I always like to see the good things but not feeling good right now”

The spelling errors are likely due to Ross trying to type quickly as the incident was going on.

This is NOT a diva complaining. A lot of people can identify exactly with what happened here. I’m sure this will not be the last we hear about this incident! Shameful!

Last night, Ross had made a stunning appearance at the New Orleans Jazz Fest, winning rave reviews.

“Game of Thones” Author George R. R. Martin Says There are Three HBO Prequels, Makes No Mention of Long- Postponed Final Book, Sort of Endorses Joe Biden

0

There’s some “Game of Thrones” news as the HBO series approaches episode 4 of its final season.

Author George R. R. Martin said in a blog post on Saturday that there had been five prequel series in development. Only three of them are viable, and one is moving forward. It’s called “The Long Night.”

Martin writes: We have had five different GAME OF THRONES successor shows in development (I mislike the term “spinoffs”) at HBO, and three of them are still moving forward nicely. The one I am not supposed to call THE LONG NIGHT will be shooting later this year, and two other shows remain in the script stage, but are edging closer. What are they about? I cannot say. But maybe some of you should pick up a copy of FIRE & BLOOD and come up with your own theories.

Martin has some other observations but makes no comment about about “The Winds of Winter,” the book he’s never finished. The final chapter of the “Game of Thrones” saga was due a couple of years ago. Without it, the series’ producers had to write their own ending to the series, which is really very on the nose and textually not the same as prior seasons. If he ever finished “Winds” and it’s different than the series, fans won’t care. They’ll accept the book as the real story.

Martin also sort of endorses Joe Biden for president: Out in the real world, I was pleased that Joe Biden finally announced his candidacy for president. There are a lot of good Democrats running, maybe too many, and I’d probably vote for any one of them over the present blot upon the Oval Office. The main things I want in a nominee, however, are twofold: (1) someone who can beat Trump, and (2) someone who would actually be a good/ great president. Biden qualifies on both counts. Also, the speech he gave announcing his run was kickass… and so, so true. I wish him well.

Anna Wintour’s Met Ball Lost More and Cost More in 2017 Than In Any Year Previously, With Nearly $4 Mil Spent to Put on Vanity Evening

0

Anna Wintour just keeps spending more and more money on the annual Met Ball. And the Met Ball numbers are trending down.

The Met Ball, of course, is supposed to be a big fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Once a year they let Wintour invite in the Kardashians and various fashion world people to make a spectacle of themselves on the red carpet. Wintour rules the Met Ball from her Iron Throne. This year’s Ball takes place on May 6th. The theme is “Notes on Camp.” Not Notes from camp, like in the Berkshires. But it would be funny if people dressed that away.

For the 2017 ball, the theme was “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons.” This is the last Met Ball for which numbers are available, and they took in a total of $12.2 million. That was significantly down from 2016, when the total was 13.5 million. It was more in the neighborhood of 2015, when the total was $12.6 million.

The Met Ball sits on the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s gross total for all fundraisers like a heavy weight. Overall, the Met lost $4.9 million on its fundraisers when you factor in the Met Ball. The previous year the loss $4.7 million. and and in 2015 it was $4.5 million. It also costs a lot more. The 2017 Met Ball had direct expenses of $3.9 million, which means food, travel, etc that wasn’t donated but charged to the Museum. That’s pretty Ball-sy.

The contributions to the Museum via the Met Ball are down as well. In 2016 they were $13.371 million. In 2017, they fell to $11.8 million. There are no available numbers yet for last year’s Ball.

It will be interesting to see if Wintour, who cannot be reined in, will cut costs this year.

National Enquirer Cover Story about Aretha Franklin “Exhumation” 100% Fake News But She Would Have Liked the Publicity

0

The National Enquirer. I hope Jimmy Cohen’s Hudson News knows what they’ve gotten into.

The May 13th cover story claims that Aretha Franklin is being exhumed because she was possibly murdered. “There was no autopsy!” the headlines cry. The Enquirer also claims there’s been theft, and has a quote from Aretha’s boyfriend, Willie Wilkerson.

Well, there’s no exhumation. That’s ridiculous. Also no autopsy was required. Aretha wasn’t murdered. She died from pancreatic cancer. It’s absurd to say she was murdered. And offensive. She suffered from that cancer, and had excellent care from her family and friends. She would laugh if she saw this story. But I think she’d like the publicity! Aretha had a great sense of humor, to a point.

The whole story is offensive, frankly. Wilkerson never spoke to the Enquirer. Everything in that story is fabricated. Every word of it. There’s been no thievery of cash or belongings. Aretha’s estate has been calmly administered. There is no scandal. Someone offer proof of that, on the record.

Willie Wilkerson, by the way, was Aretha’s most loyal pal and employee, and is still grieving her death from last August. So are her relatives. But the Pulitzer Prize ceremony on May 28th will be a salve to that pain.

Meantime, Aretha’s long time friend and photographer, Linda Solomon, of Detroit, will be publishing a book of exclusive pics in October. “The Queen Next Door: Aretha Franklin, An Intimate Portrait” has a foreword by Burt Bacharach and an afterword by Sabrina Garrett Owens, Aretha’s niece and executor. On Monday I’ll show a couple of pictures from the collection. They are just wonderful. The book really is a tribute to the Queen of Soul. Linda, by the way, is sister of former Today show correspondent Jill Rappaport. They were great friends of Lady Soul.

But National Enquirer– they should get the National Book Award for Fiction. LOL. They must be “Daydreaming”!

PS The real thing– Aretha’s gospel doc, “Amazing Grace,” is on its way to $3 million at the box office. Audiences are going crazy for it.
