Collateral Damage: Georgia Film Festival in Macon Can’t Get Celebrity Honorees Thanks to New Anti-Abortion Law, Savannah May Be Next

0

Georgia’s harsh new anti-abortion law — already causing film companies to re-evaluate shooting in the state — may cause collateral damage for film festivals.

August 16th is just around the corner and according to sources, The Macon Film Festival still has no celebrity guests or an honoree. “No one wants to go there now,” says an insider. Things have gotten so desperate that the Festival has told potential guests they will donate several thousand dollars to a pro-choice organization. But so far, no one’s biting.

Film festivals even in the most remote places depend on some celebrities coming to them. In the past, Macon has had Matthew Modine, the late Burt Reynolds, and many others. (Ironically, the weird world of small town film festivals was depicted in Reynolds’ final movie, Adam Rifkin’s “The Last Movie Star.”)

The Macon situation is a bad omen for the bigger Savannah Film Festival which comes later this fall. Last year, Savannah was brimming with stars including Hugh Jackman, Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, Armie Hammer, and Maggie Gyllenhaal. Would they have attended if the anti-abortion law was in effect last year? Not likely.

The Macon Festival is mostly for little seen independent films. Last year’s winner was the little seen “Bullitt County,” directed by David McCracken with a cast of largely unknown names (except, oddly, for Dorothy Lyman). But Savannah is all about stars, and getting big films. Their situation could be compounded by directors not wanting their movies shown at a Georgia festival.

Already several filmmakers have said they will not shoot in Georgia because of “the heartbeat” bill aka HB 481 including “The Wire” creator David Simon and his Blown Deadline Productions, Killer Films CEO Christine Vachon (“Carol,” “Vox Lux”), Mark Duplass and his Duplass Brothers Productions and “Triple Frontier” producer Neal Dodson on behalf of his CounterNarrative Films alongside J.C. Chandor.

Additionally, actress-activist Alyssa Milano wrote a letter to Georgia governor Brian Kemp vowing not to work in Georgia until the bill is reversed. It was signed by dozens of actors who could very well be in films chosen for a film festival in the Peach State.

Broadway: Liberace Musical Based on HBO Movie “Behind the Candelabra” Finally on the Way, Producers Want Bradley Cooper

0

Liberace and his glittering pianos are finally on track for Broadway.

For the last couple of years, movie producer David Permut–who just produced the all-star Mueller Report reading– has been trying to line up the right elements for this project.

But now all systems seem ‘go.’ Permut has got the rights to HBO’s award winning mini series, “Behind the Candelabra,” which starred Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as his lover, Scott Thorson. The mini series won tons of awards.

Permut tells me now it’s time to think about who will play the flamboyant superstar. In a perfect world, he wants Bradley Cooper. Now that we know Cooper can sing and play instruments, this makes sense. It’s a potential Tony Award winner.

The prospective director would be Christopher Ashley, who won the Tony in 2017 for “Come from Away” and is the director of the La Jolla Playhouse. “Behind the Candelabra” will start there.

No word yet on who would write the score. Elton John and Bernie Taupin should do it, really. (But maybe if Cooper signs on, so will Lady Gaga.) Think of it, though: “The Cher Show” plus “La Cage Aux Folles” divided by “Tootsie” equals “Liberace.”

Interesting story about the rights. Liberace is a public figure, but Thorson had to give his ok. It turns out he’s been in a Nevada state prison since January 2014 when his bail was revoked from a drug sentence. Apparently, the one person who could get to him was Bob Zmuda, friend of the late Andy Kaufman (and the man who helped give us “Man on the Moon.”) Six degrees of Andy leads straight to Liberace. It makes some kind of weird sense.

Exclusive: By the way, Permut was cagey but apparently the all-star Mueller show called “The Investigation” is headed to Washington DC next, maybe before summer’s end. In the meantime, you can see the original here.

“Avengers: Endgame” Strategic Re-release to Beat “Avatar” at Box Office Pffts as Fans Deride New Included “Extras”

0

The plot to get “Avengers: Endgame” past “Avatar” on the all time box office list has gone south. It’s evaporated like the people in Theranos’s blip.

Marvel-Disney added a minute of extra footage to “Endgame” this weekend, plus a Stan Lee tribute, hoping to lure fans back into theaters. “Endgame” is around $40 million behind “Avatar” on the adjusted-for-inflation all time box office list.

But fans smelled a rat. The minute, according to a fan website, is not newsworthy. Plus. there were no additional scenes added to the credits. Indeed, there was no reason to go back and see “Endgame” a fifth or sixth time. All this stuff can be caught on the DVD.

“Endgame” made only $1.8 million last night. If the weekend take is only $5 million, Marvel would have to keep this up for the rest of the summer. But there will be diminishing returns. The $40 million may not be worth it.

As it is, “Endgame” is still $100 million behind “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” on the real all time list. So why bother? They’re both owned by the same company: Disney.

Plus, by next week Marvel fans will have moved over to “Spider Man: Far from Home” to get the next chapter in the ongoing saga of super heroes including what happened after Tony Stark’s funeral. It’s sort of amazing how Kevin Feige and the Marvel time have woven together all this stuff, even if it makes no sense in the history of comic books. In my day (which is long ago, in another galaxy) comic book super heroes rarely crossed over into other stories. Now they all know each other. It’s like “As the Marvel World Turns.” Good for Feige. (Maybe he got the idea from “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?”.)

Review: Suspend Disbelief for “Yesterday” Quirky Fun for Beatles Fans New and Old

0

Go for the Beatles ride and see the delightful “Yesterday” the summer’s feel good movie.  Written by Richard Curtis and directed by Danny Boyle, “Yesterday” has a quirky and clever concept.   Struggling musician Jack Malik, played appealing by Himesh Patel, gets hit by a bus during an unexplained global blackout.  He regains consciousness in a world that no one has the slightest idea who the Beatles are.  They never existed in his new warped reality.

Intrepid Jack has a lightbulb moment: he writes down all the Beatles songs he remembers then starts performing them as his own. Rapidly he gains attention, including that of his local neighbor Ed Sheeran (who is actually quite funny and self -deprecating) and becomes a worldwide sensation. Along the way his childhood best friend and erstwhile manager/schoolteacher by day, a lovely Lily James, his devoted parents played wonderfully by Meera Syal and Sanjeev Bhaskar, his lovable sidekick Rocky, a funny Joel Fry, accompany him on his surreal journey.

One of the funniest scenes of the film is Jack playing “Let It Be” for his parents, with constant comic interruptions.  Kate McKinnon is hysterical as his new ruthless, shark-like Hollywood manager appropriately named Debra Hammer.  Does Jack convince the world he wrote them all himself? Yup.  Do you believe it?  Not really, but who cares?  There is a twist towards the end that is truly poignant and brings tears.  There’s a sweet romantic thread as well.  So suspend your disbelief, cynics be damned, “Yesterday” strikes all the right fantastical Beatle’s chords and cannot help but bring a smile to your face.

Crash! Madonna’s “Madame X” Album Drops Record 95% in Sales from First Week Without Ticket Bundling

0

The party is over for Madonna’s “Madame X” album.

Last week “Madame X” debuted at number 1, beating Bruce Springsteen’s “Western Stars.” I told you that Bruce was really number 1, that Madonna’s numbers were inflated by 30,000 copies bundled with tickets to her fall tour. The RIAA counts these sales.

But in Week 2, the truth is out. “Madame X” dropped a record 95%– NINETY FIVE PERCENT. It sold just 3,600 copies, a total of 5,900 including streaming of the album and singles. Madonna’s had huge drops in the past because of this ticket bundling scheme, but this is her biggest ever.

Meanwhile, Springsteen sold 9,500 copies of “Western Stars” this week, a total of 11,200 including streaming. If “Western Stars” doesn’t win the Grammy for Album of the Year next January, it will be a very disappointing time in music.

This week’s number 1 album will be a toss up between Jack White’s Raconteurs and Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” EP called “7.” The single, “Old Town Road,” with Billy Ray Cyrus, is certainly the song of the year, still at number 1 and going strong.

Numbers are from Buzz Angle.

Roseanne Barr-Andrew Dice Clay “Mr. and Mrs. America” Tour off to Slow Start with Sluggish Ticket Sales

0

Roseanne Barr already had one poorly received stand up comedy tour this year. It was just last month.

But she must be a glutton for punishment. Tickets have go on sale for the first two dates of her “Mr. and Mrs. America” tour with Andrew Dice Clay. And they’re not moving.

The first two dates are September 19th at the Paramount Theater in Huntington, Long Island, and September 20th at the Etness Arena in Atlantic City.

Initial sales are not that swell. At the Paramount, either actual ticket buyers or scalpers bought up the front center. But everything else is available. The Ticketmaster map is a sea of blue dots.

Same thing the next night. In fact the Etness Center has blocked off the side sections, they’re not even bothering to sell them. In the end, the arena will hope for walk up business on the night of the show.

These two locations were good tests for interest in Roseanne and Dice. They’re working class, Republican areas. If they’re not excited about this event, I can’t imagine who else will be.

Most Profitable Movie of the Year So Far? Horror Film “Ma” Unlikely Hit from People Who Made “The Help”

0

The smartest person in the movie business right now besides horror master producer Jason Blum is probably Oscar winner Octavia Spencer. She got her Oscar for “The Help,” a sensitive film about race set in the early 60s South, and never looked back.

Now Spencer and Blum are connected through their movie, “Ma,” a $5 million Blumhouse special directed by “The Help” director Tate Taylor and starring Spencer. Yes, the same Octavia Spencer from other sensitive movies like “Fruitvale Station” and “Hidden Figures.”

“Ma,” which I know, dear reader, you haven’t seen, has made $45 million at the US box office and another $13 million internationally. That’s $58 million on a $5 million budget. And it’s not over. “Ma” is still out there making money. Then it will be a big hit on DVD, streaming, and so on.

Blum has made a fortune with smart horror films like “Ma,” all of which cost $5 million apiece. Plus he produced Jordan Peele’s breakout hit, “Get Out,” which combined horror with social satire to make a potent mix.

Spencer not only stars as “Ma,” she’s an executive producer. She was also an executive producer on this year’s Oscar winner, “Green Book.” Next year she stars in Robert Zemeckis’s “The Witches,” produced by the dynamic duo of Alfonso Cuaron and Guillermo del Toro.

Clearly, she and her team know what they’re doing. What a great story. Before “The Help” came out in 2011, Spencer had spent about 15 years working doggedly, mostly in television, in small roles. This is quite an achievement! And PS, Octavia Spencer couldn’t be nicer.

Games of Temps for Joe Jonas-Sophie Turner Wedding as French Town Sets Record Over 100 Degrees This Weekend

0

I told you first and exclusively the where and when of “Game of Thrones” star Sophie Turner’s wedding to pop star Joe Jonas.

I also told you that Bruno Mars was going to be the entertainment.

So cool that the tabs have never acknowledged our scoops. All they wrote until a few days ago was there would be a wedding in Europe this summer.

What I couldn’t have predicted was the heat wave that’s making Carpentras, France in the Luberon mountains sizzle to record temps.

The wedding will occur during 100 degree-plus days, maybe as high as 110 degrees. This part of France is not near the water. It’s dry and hot without much shade or relief. I know, I was there years ago for a heat wave when senior citizens were dying. There isn’t much air conditioning. That wedding will not begin until 9pm, I guarantee you. It’s too hot. And darkness doesn’t fall right now until 10pm.

Of course, there’s plenty at the Chateau where the wedding and parties are taking place starting tomorrow. It’s very expensive.

Meantime, I’m enjoying all the photos taken from telephoto lenses– long, long zoom– by Splash News and all the tabloids including the Daily Mail. As I told you, Vogue has the exclusive on pictures.

Those poor paparazzi– in the sweltering heat, unable to get near a pool, hiding in bushes or whatever. Keep the rose cold, folks! That will help!

(Listen) to the Remixed Version of Whitney Houston’s Unreleased Take on Steve Winwood’s “Higher Love”

0

Will it be a hit? Is there such a thing?

Who knows? But Whitney Houston’s unreleased version of Steve Winwood’s hit, “Higher Love,” will be dropped on us tonight.

The song was only on the Japanese version of Whitney’s 1990 album “I’m Your Baby Tonight.” There’s a live version from then, when Whitney’s voice was at its peak of gorgeousness. I’ve included it here.

Kygo, a contemporary hit producer, has remixed the recording to make it sound up to date. But really. it’s just that voice. You could listen to it forever. And “Higher Love” was always one of the greatest records ever. Steve Winwood deserves more credit for all his work, from “Gimme Good Lovin'” through Traffic and his solo records.

Here’s the original live version.

Who Will Play the Brave Real Life Women of “Maiden” in Feature Film? Brie Larson, Saoirse Ronan, Danielle McDonald, It’s Time to Get Wet

0

Here’s the deal on “Maiden,” an extraordinary documentary that sets sail for the Oscars beginning tomorrow in limited release and will go wide over the summer. Tracy Edwards is sort of the new Philomena, a real life heroine who organized the first ever all female crew to compete in Britain’s Whitbread round the world race back in 1989-90.

Once you’ve seen her on screen now, and from the miraculous film that survived from her unique triumph, Tracy is going to be a star. So will her crew, including her pal Jo Gooding, who filmed the whole adventure nearly 30 years ago without any training. Filmmakers at a screening and reception this week for “Maiden” were completely impressed with Jo’s work back then. This tiny woman was completely bowled over by the compliments.

“I just took the camera and shot everything,” she said humbly. “I couldn’t imagine it would become a feature film.”

Director Alex Holmes retrieved all the footage that had been discarded, plus conducted new interviews. Sounds simple, but it wasn’t. And Holmes’s real achievement is in the story telling. The film is dramatic and exciting, and begging for a major motion picture version.

“Maiden” has a surprise hero at its center, too: King Hussein of Jordan. You’ll have to watch the film to learn how he and Tracy hit it off, and Royal Jordanian Airlines came to sponsor the Maiden trip. Three decades later, King Hussein’s daughter, Princess Haya, helped Edwards buy back the original Maiden, clean it up, and send it on a worldwide tour supporting education for young women. Queen Noor (who is not Haya’s mother) sent a message of congrats that was read at our screening.

Who would Tracy like to see play her? Most of the night, the guests–including Oscar winners Barbara Kopple and Karen Goodman, “Veep” actress Margaret Colin, the great Carol Alt, and the evening’s host, Whoopi Goldberg— were taking stabs at names. When the women went on this death-dying trip around the world in a sailboat they were between 27 and 30. Now they’re between 57 and 60. Studios are going to want to tell you the young women’s stories.

Every known actress on the imdb will want to be involved. But if Brie Larson and Saoirse Ronan are up for getting wet, this movie is for them. Danielle McDonald, too.

The word is that “big” Sony- aka Tom Rothman’s Sony– will make the translation since Michael Barker and Tom Bernard‘s Sony Pictures Classics is releasing “Maiden” now.

See this movie! I’m telling you now, “Maiden” will be that Oscar movie you can tell friends you saw this summer.
