Late, Great Aretha Franklin Gets a Real “Freeway of Love” As Michigan Names Part of Detroit Highway for Her

0

Aretha Franklin is getting a real freeway of love.

Michigan governor Gretchen Witmer has signed a bill making part of the M-10 Freeway that runs through Detroit as the Aretha L. Franklin Memorial Highway.

Our friend Aretha died on August 16th last year. I’ve been thinking about her a lot this week as I went to Detroit to see her one year ago this week.

She had just received another honor– the naming of a downtown street near Tigers Stadium is now Aretha Franklin Way.

After her death, the city also renamed a local concert venue on the river in her honor.

This past May, Aretha also received a posthumous Pulitzer Prize for her life’s work.

She would be so pleased by all these accolades. They show so much RESPECT!

The piece of highway which will bear her name begins near her famed New Bethel Baptist Church.

The Democratic governor notes in a statement that Franklin’s “creativity and voice contributed to our musical and cultural history in Michigan.”

By the way, Aretha’s gospel documentary, “Amazing Grace,” has made over $4.3 million in its theatrical release. It’s still playing in some theaters after a hugely successful run. Director Sydney Pollack must be smiling in heaven.

“The Lion King” redux is coming, with a new song by Beyonce. Well, they needed a new song to qualify for the Oscars since the Elton John songs are 25 years old. Can you feel the gold statue tonight? It’s the circle of life, after all. Beyonce’s song is called “Spirit.” It’s written by Lebo M. and Hans Zimmer with Beyonce adding her own special touch. She is royalty and this is about royalties. ‘Natch.

Legendary Actor Rip Torn Dead at 88, Emmy Winner for “Larry Sanders Show,” Oscar Nominee, Tony Nominated, Once Married to Geraldine Page

Rip Torn– contentious, brilliant, mercurial, genius– actor is dead at age 88.

He was best known for playing Garry Shandling’s sidekick on “The Larry Sanders Show.” But he appeared on Broadway ten times and was nominated for a Tony in 1960.

Torn was nominated for an Oscar in 1984 for Best Supporting Actor in “Cross Creek.”

Originally a stage actor known for drama, Torn later blossomed as a comedic actor who take bombast to new levels.

He was married three times: to the late great Ann Wedgworth, to the late Oscar winner Geraldine Page, and to his widow, actress Amy Wright. He had children with all of them including two with Page who became actors: Tony Torn and Angelica Torn.

Torn had nine Emmy nominations and one win, in 1997, for “Larry Sanders.” He appeared in 89 episodes of that show and became a fan favorite.

He burst onto the scene in the early 60s starring in three different plays by Tennessee Williams. Torn was a regular on TV starting in the late 50s, and never stopped working. One memorable role was that of Don Geiss, Alec Baldwin’s mentor, on “30 Rock.”

Rip Torn will be remembered for being an iconoclast. He never conformed, and went his own way. That’s why whenever you see him in a film or TV show, he leaves an indelible mark. Condolences to his family.

Showtime’s Roger Ailes Mini-Series Skips Monica Lewinsky-Bill Clinton Scandal, Rewrites History of How Fox News Became a Powerhouse

0

Showtime’s “The Loudest Voice” mini series about Roger Ailes and Fox News is a ratings loser so far. On its opening night, only 299,000 people tuned in for its official debut.

There’s a spectacularly accurate reason “Loudest Voice” isn’t attracting viewers: it’s not good. I don’t mean it’s poorly written, acted, or directed. It’s not. Of course, all those items are high in quality.

But the series has no context, and it jumps around. There’s no sense to it. This past Sunday night’s episode (number 2, ratings announced tomorrow) jumped to 2001, and 9/11, as if that were a pivotal moment at Fox News. It wasn’t. (I was there.) I was surprised that the creators of “Loudest Voice” leaped over 1998-99 and the Monica Lewinsky-Bill Clinton scandal. That was a pivotal moment.

Everything at Fox News changed as Matt Drudge, in his online Drudge Report, broke the stories of Clinton’s affairs (Paula Jones, Gennifer Flowers) and then Lewinsky. Fox hopped on that bandwagon. Drudge even got a Fox News TV show out of it. The Clintons’ vulnerabilities, the impeachment and so on– that’s what fed the new conservative movement. “Loudest Voice” skipped right over that.

They also ignored the 2000 election, hanging chads, and the Bush cousin who was working for Fox News on election night at the broadcast center. Fox News fueled the George W. Bush election win, the Supreme Court fight, all of it.

So interesting: “Loudest Voice” is based on Gabriel Sherman’s excellent book. But the book was Sherman’s take, and it was so much about the Gretchen Carlson-Bill O’Reilly sex scandals etc. The mini series would have been smarter to focus on all of that, the later years, with flashbacks to the early days. Instead, the linear approach is not working. They don’t seem to know much about those days. It’s all gone wrong.

Still, Russell Crowe is excellent as Ailes. Most of the other casting is pedestrian. Mackenzie Astin as John Moody– no. Moody was Ailes’s yes man. His toady. So far, like many of the supporting characters, he’s not fleshed out enough to explain his presence. Also, they missed a good chance with Dianne Brandi, Ailes’s Queens-accented in house barracuda of a lawyer. They could have had a supporting actress nomination with a real scene chewer. Their Dianne Brandi is just wallpaper. Too bad.

Trump Justice: Friars Club Chief Michael Gyure, Who Pleaded Guilty to Tax Fraud, Sentenced to Time Served, Throws a Pre-Planned Party

0

You see, here’s the thing. In the time of Trump, the swamp is deeper and more operational than ever.

Friars Club chief Michael Gyure, who pleaded guilty to tax fraud, was sentenced today to time served. Witnesses testified at his sentencing hearing about what a bad guy he is. One witness told Judge Naomi Buchwald that Gyure already had a party planned to celebrate his light, nay almost non existent, sentence.

The judge didn’t care. She apparently had already decided that crimes committed by or around the Friars Club should stay in the Friars Club. Why should she hold Gyure to the letter of the if the Friars didn’t care enough to throw him out?

Gyure was sentenced to one year of supervised release. That’s it. Judge Buchwald said she thought the problems in the club should be taken up as a civil case.

No one seems to care that the Friars have wasted or lost millions of dollars under Gyure’s administration. The Friars have not filed a tax return since 2015. There’s no transparency. Most of the celebrity members are long gone, as well as high profile media types who sniffed a rat a long time ago. The reputation of the Friars Club, once held high in esteem by the likes Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lewis, Alan King, and Freddie Roman, is in tatters.

The club itself, on East 55th St., is closed for renovations this summer. I began my reporting on the criminal chaos at the Friars several years ago.

In the last year, the club has had to settle a million dollar lawsuit brought by its former receptionist against member and celebrity wrangler Bruce Charet, who is supported by Gyure (ironically pronounced “jury”) and vice versa.

What’s pretty clear is that the Friars Club as a place for actual celebs is over. Billy Crystal, who was honored earlier this year, has told friends he regretted accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award — especially when he realized the other honoree was an ex con and (presumably) former mob associate.

Coincidentally, Judge Buchwald is married to a man named Don Buchwald, but it’s not the same Don Buchwald who is Howard Stern’s long time agent and a former Friars members. The judge is 75 and sounds like she may be ready for assisted living.

Jeffrey Epstein Indictment Unsealed, Alleged Pedophile Billionaire Was Like a Real Life Hannibal Lecter at New York Social Events Until Recently

0

The indictment against Jeffrey Epstein has been unsealed this morning. Details from the US Attorney’s office press release follow.

The irony here is that Epstein has been among us for years, mingling like a werewolf, showing up with dates, going unnoticed for a long time. Whenever he stepped into a room– a charity function, a press opening etc– it gave the event a little buzz. It was a lot like when Claus von Bulow would show up. They were sort of like real life Hannibal Lecters.

Epstein’s indictment could unravel and unhinge a lot of famous people if he names names and it all comes out. But don’t you notice how that never happens? Little black books somehow always disappear. The right money is spread around, and a fevered press pitch pffts in the end.

Here’s the release:

From at least 2002 through at least 2005, JEFFREY EPSTEIN enticed and recruited, and caused to be enticed and recruited, dozens of minor girls to visit his mansion in New York, New York (the “New York Residence”), and his estate in Palm Beach, Florida (the “Palm Beach Residence”), to engage in sex acts with him, after which he would give the victims hundreds of dollars in cash. In order to maintain and increase his supply of victims, EPSTEIN also paid certain victims to recruit additional underage girls whom he could similarly abuse. In this way, EPSTEIN created a vast network of underage victims for him to sexually exploit, often on a daily basis, in locations including New York and Palm Beach.

EPSTEIN’s victims were as young as 14 at the time he abused them, and were, for various reasons, often particularly vulnerable to exploitation. Moreover, EPSTEIN knew that many of his victims were under 18, including because, in some instances, victims expressly told him they were underage.

In creating and maintaining this network of minor victims in multiple states to abuse and exploit sexually, EPSTEIN worked with others, including employees and associates who facilitated his conduct by, among other things, contacting victims and scheduling their sexual encounters with EPSTEIN at the New York Residence and at the Palm Beach Residence.

In both New York and Florida, EPSTEIN perpetuated this abuse in similar ways. Victims were initially recruited to provide “massages” to EPSTEIN, which became increasingly sexual in nature and would typically include one or more sex acts. EPSTEIN paid his victims hundreds of dollars in cash for each encounter.

In particular, during encounters at the New York Residence, victims would be taken to a room where they would perform a massage on EPSTEIN, during which EPSTEIN would frequently escalate the nature and scope of physical contact with his victims to include, among other things, sex acts such as groping and direct and indirect contact with the victims’ genitals. In connection with the encounters, EPSTEIN, or one of his employees or associates, typically paid each victim hundreds of dollars in cash. Once minor victims were recruited, EPSTEIN or his employees or associates would contact victims to schedule appointments for “massages.” As a result, many victims were abused by EPSTEIN on multiple subsequent occasions.

To further enable him to abuse underage girls, EPSTEIN asked and enticed certain of his victims to recruit additional minor girls to perform “massages” and similarly engage in sex acts with EPSTEIN. When a victim would recruit another underage girl for EPSTEIN, he paid both the victim-recruiter and the new victim hundreds of dollars in cash. Through these victim-recruiters, EPSTEIN maintained a steady supply of new victims to exploit, and gained access to dozens of additional underage girls to abuse.

“Spider Man: Far from Home” Swings to Amazing $185 Mil in 6 Days, $30 Million Ahead of First Tom Holland Peter Parker Web Spinner

0

Marvel madness continues…

Wow! “Spider Man: Far from Home” has picked up $185 million in its first six days. This is waaaaay more than Sony Columbia Pictures predicted or dreamed of.

The Far from Home predecessor, “Homecoming,” made only $154 million in its first six days. So this is reason for celebration.

Worldwide since its release a couple of days earlier in foreign parts, “Far from Home” is now at $580 million.

Tom Holland now joins the ranks of the biggest movie stars in the world. He just turned 23!

More box office to come…keep refreshing…

The Beatles movie “Yesterday” is a hit. They’re at $36 million. That’s five or six times what the producers paid for the Beatles songs. Ed Sheeran should get a nice boost from this– he has a new album coming out shortly. The Beatles catalog is booming!

“Yesterday,” like Elton John’s “Rocketman,” has legs. People keep coming back and the movie lasts. “Rocketman” crossed the $90 million mark this weekend.

Broadway Mourns Tony Winner Martin Charnin, 85, Co-Creator and Lyricist for “Annie,” Got His Start Acting in the Original “West Side Story”

0

Martin Charnin, 85, the co-creator and lyricist for “Annie,” has died. His daughter posted a notice to Instagram over night. Charnin and Charles Strouse wrote the musical that has become a modern classic, performed all over the world many times. Charnin also directed dozens of productions and was planning a revival of the little known sequel. He got his start in the original company of “West Side Story” as an actor. His widow was former “One Life to Live” actress Shelly Burch. I knew him when she was married to his second wife, Jade Hobson, the former fashion director of New York magazine in the 1990s. (Tracee Ellis Ross was her intern!) Marty Charnin was one of those few towering Broadway greats who will never be replaced. The lights on Broadway will no doubt be dimmed in his memory on Tuesday evening.

from Instagram:

Our father passed away. Martin Charnin lived a very full life. He was watching Family Feud at the end, laughing with Shelly in bed at the hospital. He suffered a minor heart attack on the 3rd and tried to hold on for all us. His strength was astounding. He’s in a painless place, now. Probably looking for Cole Porter and Ira Gershwin. We adored Daddy and not fully accepting it yet. He loved and lived his best! He was the best father we could have ever imagined. He is survived by his wife, all of his kids and his three grandchildren, several dogs, cats and a kid with no pupils. And as loving as he was has kept all of us completely directionless. Which way do we go Daddy? Damn. But like he said and as corny as this sounds…the sun’ll will come out tomorrow. Rest In Peace, Daddy. We love you. #martincharnin

You can only imagine the word of mouth this movie is engendering. The producers can count on crossing $200 million by Monday or Tuesday at the latest.

Box Office: “Spider Man: Far from Home” Crosses $100 Million Today, Heads to $170 Million Week Through Sunday

0

The Box office continues to be all about Spider Man, and Amy Pascal.

“Far from From” grossed $25 million yesterday, bringing its US total to $91 million. Tonight it will cross the $100 million mark after four days. The weekend should bring it to $150-$170 million.

Producer Amy Pascal left Sony Pictures after the crazy Wikileaks-Korean hacking incident revealed all sorts of embarrassing emails from and to everyone at the studio. She took Spider Man with her because at that point, no one wanted it or knew what do with it. Amy did.

Pascal has now had two monster live action Spider Man movies, plus the Oscar winning “Into the Spider Verse” animated movie. You can’t do better than this in the movie business. She’s a one -woman Ziegfeld. Bravo to her, not just as a female producer, but a producer period!
