CBS Will Air the Daytime Emmys, Bringing them Back To TV After Many Years, Because They’ve Run out of Shows

0

Content really is king.

CBS has obviously run out of things to air on the network. So they’re bringing back the Daytime Emmys. That awards show has not been on broadcast TV in many years. But you have to work with what’s available.

The bulk of the Daytime Emmys is about soap operas, and CBS has two, “The Young and the Restless,” and “The Bold and the Beautiful.” Plus they have game shows like “The Price is Right.”

The Daytime Emmys will air on June 26th, and they’ll be virtual.  The actors will be seen from their homes, or in settings they want their fans to see. That alone should be pretty interesting. I’d like to see Deidre Hall’s house, that’s for sure.

Who is nominated for a Daytime Emmy? Who knows? I guess we’ll find out soon.

CBS can’t expect big ratings. Last night ABC aired a wobbly two hour special about the history of soaps and barely cleared 2 million viewers. But they’ve got to fill the time. It could be worse.

Broadway Will Celebrate the Tony Awards as Planned on June 7th, Retaliation Against CBS “Grease” Screening

0

Well played!

The Tony Awards will be celebrated on June 7th as planned, streaming on Broadway.com. The John Gore Organization will produce the show. Details of who’s going to be on the show are coming.

This is nice rebuke against CBS, which is showing the movie “Grease” instead of the Tonys. “Grease” never won a Tony Award in any incarnation.

“Show of Shows: Broadway.com Salutes the Tonys” will benefit the two theatrical organizations that co-present the Tony Awards: The American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League. It will kick off at 7pm, same time the Tonys would have begun at Radio City Music Hall.

In a statement, John Gore said, “We will deeply miss this year’s Tony Awards and telecast, and ‘Show of Shows’ is our small way of saluting that grand tradition while raising funds for the American Theatre Wing and Broadway League’s much needed educational initiatives.”

“Show of Shows: Broadway.com Salutes the Tonys” will be directed by Paul Wontorek, Broadway.com’s Editor-in-Chief, with Charlie Rosen serving as Music Supervisor / Producer / Orchestrator.

Who should be on this show? Well, read my story from a few days ago. Please, Gores, do something for Adrienne Warren.

Watch David Lynch’s New 10 Minute Animated Film “Fire (Pozar)” Here, It’s A Beautiful Balm to Our Lockdown

0

You can watch David Lynch’s 10 minute animated film “Fire (Pozar)” here.

Lynch’s website says:
“The 10-minute animation was written, drawn, and directed by David Lynch and had its world premiere on March 28 back in 2015 during the Measures & Frames “visual music” event at USC’s Newman Recital Hall in Los Angeles. Subsequent screenings occurred at the Kwadrofonik Festival in Warsaw, Poland, and most recently during the Someone Is In My House exhibition at Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht, the Netherlands. Starting May 20, 2020, the short film can be streamed worldwide for free.”

Longtime Lynch collaborator Noriko Miyakawa (assistant editor on Twin Peaks: The Return, Inland Empire, and more) brought the director’s drawings to life. The soundtrack was composed by Marek Zebrowski, who met David Lynch at the Camerimage Festival in Poland and worked with him on multiple projects including the Polish Night Music album. During a Q&A after the world premiere, David Lynch said he gave Marek Zebrowski carte blanche to interpret the surreal visuals. The composer went on to describe his approach of the experiment as follows:

“I thought it was a very melancholic film in a certain sense and also very poetic. Without trying to be too explicit, I tried to illustrate further what David was doing. For example, there is something that looks like a hailstorm and I used a lot of pizzicato, but I also used a soaring melodic line to add a lyrical element to it.”

And when you get a chance, watch “Twin Peaks” Season 3, episode 8, maybe the greatest thing you’ll ever see made for the small screen. Or any screen.

Jean Shafiroff, NYC’s Most Devoted Philanthropist, Pivots from Parties and Gowns to Food Pantries for Humans and Pets

0

On a May night in New York, Jean Shafiroff would be spotted at several different fundraisers, shining like glamorous royalty in one gorgeous gown or the other. A devoted philanthropist who supports countless causes, Jean subscribes to the adage (from “Hello, Dolly!”) Dolly Levi says her late husband, Ephraim instilled in her: “Money is like manure. It must be spread around to make things grow.”

But on this May night, Jean — who is an enthusiastic interviewee on these subject on TV and radio — is at home on Eastern Long Island. She’s got six people and five animals in her house, and she’s busy promoting food pantries for humans as well as animals. She beats the drum for philanthropy and she always puts her money where her mouth is. On the phone, she rattles off a list of places where her money is doing good.

“New York Mission Society, New York Women’s Foundation, God’s Love We Deliver, Southampton Hospital,” she tells me. She hahs sent orders of hero sandwiches to the heroes in the lab department at the hospital.

When Jean and Martin Shafiroff relocated to the Hamptons during the lockdown, they immediately pitched in. The Shafiroffs donated 10,000 meals to Heart of the Hamptons food pantry, and their involvement is ongoing. “The need is so great,” Jean says and she’s not telling me any of this to promote herself. She’s promoting philanthropy. (She even wrote a book about it.)

Shafiroff is not only helping those with two legs, but some four legged friends as well. She’s a devoted animal activist, and says that one result of people losing jobs is that they don’t have money to feed their pets. She’s just been named a national spokesperson for the American Humane Association, she’s raising a million dollars for their Feed the Hungry programs as well.

And none of these are passing interests for Jean Shafiroff. “This isn’t going to end anytime soon,” she reminds me. “We have to keep giving.”

NYC’s Famed Public Theater Will Stream All-Star Show with Sting, Glenn Close, Audra McDonald, Oscar Isaac, Elvis Costello, More

New York’s famed Public Theater is losing a lot of money while the lockdown continues. Their revenue stream needs a big shot in the arm so they’ve got a big fundraiser planned for June 1st streaming on their website and elsewhere.

The main event is free, and features Sting and Trudie Styler, Glenn Close, Audra McDonald, Elvis Costello, Oscar Isaac, Anne Hathaway, Antonio Banderas, Laura Benanti, Nikki M. James, John Leguizamo, and more. The show will be hosted by Jesse Tyler Ferguson, directed by Kenny Leon with music directed by Ted Sperling.

Sam Waterston, who was in so many early Public Theater productions, will be honored.

Before the event goes live on streaming, the clever people at the Public have worked out a way for top donors to host private cocktail parties with some of the stars. The donations range down from $50,000. You can read all about that here.

The Public Theater has given us a lot of historic shows, like “Hamilton,” “Hair,” and “A Chorus Line.” Not being open since March is very damaging. This is an important event that I’m happy to promote (even though there was no press release, I just cooked this up from their website).

All you rich kids who fled Manhattan for the Hamptons or Palm Beach, set up your parties now!

The Empire Strikes Back: Matt Lauer Finally Addresses Ronan Farrow Book, Ann Curry Scandal, His Exit from NBC

0

Matt Lauer has finally said something about his scandalous exit from NBC and the Today Show.

Indeed, Lauer has written a piece for the website Mediaite, owned by Dan Abrams, in which he picks apart Ronan Farrow’s reporting in the book “Catch and Kill.”

Lauer says he was going to publish the piece last November but certain events postponed it. Then this past weekend the New York Times media critic Ben Smith published his own scathing appraisal of Farrow’s book. That gave Lauer an opening.

Lauer not only pinpoints what he sees as journalistic and fact checking errors, he also refers to Ann Curry’s ouster from the Today Show and mentions former entertainment booker Melissa Lonner.

Lauer writes: “Lonner is also a close friend of Ann Curry, and both believed I had a major role in having Ann removed from our show in 2012 in what was a terrible chapter at Today that played out in the headlines. They both blamed me, and they did little to hide their feelings with people, both inside and outside the network.”

He stops short of denying that he campaigned to oust Curry.

Most of Matt’s piece is focused on Brooke Nevils, with whom he says he had a consensual affair. Nevils told Farrow that was not the case, and it led to NBC firing him.

“The allegation came from Brooke Nevils, the same woman whose complaint resulted in my termination at NBC. It was made public as part of the promotional rollout for a new book by Ronan Farrow. This accusation was one of the worst and most consequential things to ever happen in my life, it was devastating for my family, and outrageously it was used to sell books.

“At no time did Brooke Nevils ever use the words “assault” or “rape” in regards to any accusation against me while filing her complaint with NBC in November of 2017. That has been confirmed publicly. NBC never suggested I was being accused of such an offense when I met with their attorney on Nov. 28 of that same year. They have also confirmed that publicly.”

Lauer concludes: “I was shaken, but not surprised, that few in the media were willing to thoroughly challenge the accusations against me, or the person making them. The rush to judgment was swift. In fact, on the morning I was falsely accused of rape, and before I could even issue a statement, some journalists were already calling my accuser “brave” and “courageous.” While the presumption of innocence is only guaranteed in a court of law, I felt journalists should have, at the very least, recognized and considered it.”

I don’t know anything about Matt Lauer’s alleged sexual harassment of employees at NBC. It was common knowledge that he “fooled around,” but that was all. But no one could ever write that because it couldn’t be fact checked. And apparently, according to Lauer and Smith, it wasn’t.

Uptown Records Founder Andre Harrell will Get a Special Tribute This Sunday May 24th on BET

0

Uptown Records founder Andre Harrell, who died suddenly at age 59, will get a special tribute show this Sunday on BET at 9pm. Among the people participating are Chris Rock, Mariah Carey, Jamie Foxx, Babyface, Naomi Campbell, Lee Daniels, Robin Thicke, Russell Simmons, Kimora Lee Simmons, Clarence Avant.

Sean Diddy Combs’s Revolt TV, where Harrell was working when he died, will also carry the show. But the press release makes no mention of Combs as a participant. That’s a little strange since Harrell plucked Sean from obscurity and made him a star. Maybe he’ll be a surprise guest.

Also not mentioned in Mary J. Blige. Harrell was her first record exec and launched her career.

The show is Executive Produced by Wendy Credle, Rikki Hughes and Harrell’s son, Gianni Credle-Harrell.

“There is a divine message when a soul as bright as Andre’s, Mr. Champagne & Bubbles, the official life of the party, chooses to transition during a time when so many people who’s lives he touched so deeply, cannot get together to console each other, to share joy-filled stories, and to do the “hampty hamps” two-step in the name of his love,” says Credle. “This Tribute is our gift to Andre. When his day came, Andre said, “Listen, if they ain’t playing Frankie Beverly and Maze’s “Before I Let Go” at my funeral, guess what, I ain’t going.” He said, “I don’t want a funeral. I want a party”. Well, Andre, in the words of Frankie, “You made us happy, This you can bet, You stood right beside us, And we won’t forget.”

Sunday Cable Ratings: In a Race Among Quality Scripted Shows, “Billions” Beats “I Know This Much” But Michael Jordan Trumps All

0

I am celebrating a victory for my favorite show that can be seen on a television set.

“Billions,” now in season 5, won a three way race Sunday night at 9pm among quality dramas.

To wit: “Billions” scored 568,000 viewers. On HBO, Mark Ruffalo playing twins in “I Know This Much is True” had 313,000 people tuning in. On AMC, “Killing Eve” scored just 368,000. The latter show had a simultaneous broadcast on BBC AMerica, with 340,000.

But on a single channel, “Billions” won hands down. So we win, and I accept the award on behalf of Bobby Axelrod, Chuck Rhoades, Wendy Rhoades, and all their minions.

Of course, these three shows were low ratings-getters on Sunday night cable. All the action was on ESPN, where 6 million plus people tuned into the “Last Dance” documentary about Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. That’s the rating of a network show.  Twice as many men as women watched the Bulls saga. But that’s a documentary.

On TBS, “Snowpiercer” debuted with almost 2 million viewers. But TNT comes with your cable, as opposed to Showtime and HBO, which are subscription channels. It’s a great showing for “Snowpiercer,” and I was thrilled to see it finally appear after long delays and lots of hype. Jennifer Connelly, Daveed Diggs, and especially Mickey Sumner head a cool cast.

But “Billions” is thriving, which is nice to see. I’m enjoying seeing Bobby getting knocked around a little by Corey Stoll’s new guy tech billionaire, and Julianna Margulies is about to play a big part in Chuck’s life, I feel. Looking forward to the next episode like crazy.

Anti-Semite Mel Gibson’s Neo-Nazi Loving Dad Hutton Gibson Died on May 11th at 101 and No One Told Us

0

I was getting ready to write this: Notorious anti-Semite, racist, and misogynist Mel Gibson is back. He looked deranged as ever in his new straight to video release, called “Force of Nature.” His co-stars are Emile Hirsch, who once punched a female publicist in Hollywood, and Kate Bosworth, who is married to the director, Michael Polish. The whole thing goes digital on June 30th and will be very popular in Albania, or someplace where Mel’s comments about the Holocaust– “at this point it’s a numbers game” — aren’t a concern.

Then I looked on Wikipedia, and it turns out Hutton Gibson DIED on May 11th and no one told us. Hallelujah! Neo-Nazi loving, anti-Arch Diocese, bizarre rogue Catholic Hutton was 101, almost 102. Did corona virus kill him? Who knows! But Hutton Gibson was a bad, bad guy who was a Holocaust denier and all around crazy person. As noted in Wikipedia, he was quoted as saying the Second Vatican Council was “a Masonic plot backed by the Jews.” He also hated every Pope and railed against the Catholic church even though he was Catholic.

It was for Hutton that Mel built his Holy Family church in Malibu (Agoura Hills) funded with $70 million tax free through Mel’s AP Reilly Foundation. It continues in blissful ignorance to this day. Mel, meantime, you know, had seven kids with first wife Robyn, cheated on her, had his famous DUI incident which revealed all his horrible traits to the world. Then he hooked up with much younger Oksana Grigorieva, gave crazy interviews about the Holocaust, basically lost his career. Now he’s with some young Tootsie and he has a kid who’s younger than his grandchildren.

As for Hutton, hell is too good a fate. Also from Wikipedia: In a 2003 interview he questioned how the Nazis could have disposed of six million bodies during the Holocaust and claimed that the September 11, 2001 attacks were perpetrated by remote control.

So roast in Hell, Hutton. And everyone ignore “Force of Nature” when it’s released this June. At least there’s no beaver involved.

Good News, for a Change: Celebrity Bandleader Peter Duchin Is Getting Better, Son Says “Has Begun Rehabilitation”

0

SOme good news, for a change. Celebrity bandleader, beloved and popular New Yorker Peter Duchin is on the mend. His son, Colin, reports on Instagram that his dad’s recovery continues.

Colin writes:

“I’m so happy to be able say that my father has begun rehabilitation…I have shared with him (via phone) all of the thoughts and love that you have been sending, he is totally moved and so appreciative…there is still a very long road ahead, but thankfully he is on that road and improving daily…I can’t thank you enough for all of the care, love, and grace you have sent his way, I’m Grateful.”

Music has healing powers! We want to see Peter back on his bandstand this fall, swinging with his orchestra.
