Larry Kramer, Fierce AIDS Activist and Playwright Author of “The Normal Heart,” Dies of Pneumonia at Age 84

0

Larry Kramer, the most ferocious AIDS activist in history, and playwright author of “The Normal Heart,” has died at age 84. The cause of death was pneumonia. He lived 30+ years beyond most of his peers, incredibly, because he was a standard bearer and had to be here.

In a strange twist of events, we knew his mother, Rhea, who was just like him– articulate, smart, activist. She and my grandmother became very friendly in assisted living in the 90s. They were each in their 90s! She was incredibly proud of both her sons, Larry and Arthur, a lawyer who also represented Larry and is portrayed in his work.

Larry wrote a play about her called “The Destiny of Me,” and we all went to see it– Rhea, too– at the Lucille Lortel Theater. I have a feeling they are reunited and fighting–in a good way–in heaven, also with Arthur, who predeceased him years ago. Quite a family. They are all missed.

Trump Responds to New Twitter Warnings on His Posts By Attacking Them! “Twitter is Completely Stifling Free Speech!”

0

I hope Jack Dorsey sees what’s going on here. Donald Trump is now attacking Twitter, accusing them of stifling free speech because they’ve added a warning to his posts about mail in ballots. This is hilarious. Dorsey has gone out of his way to let Trump post malicious, outrageous lies, derogatory statements about all kinds of people, and now Trump is biting the hand that feeds him.

You can’t make this up!

“Twitter is now interfering in the 2020 Presidential Election. They are saying my statement on Mail-In Ballots, which will lead to massive corruption and fraud, is incorrect, based on fact-checking by Fake News CNN and the Amazon Washington Post….

….Twitter is completely stifling FREE SPEECH, and I, as President, will not allow it to happen!”

Trump’s Twitter Account Gets Special Warning About Mail in Ballots, But References to Joe Scarborough and “Murder” of Staffer Remain

0

Donald Trump’s Twitter account has been cleaned either by him or by Twitter. Twitter has added a blue warning under Tweets Trump has made about mail in election ballots. It now says in blue under those Tweets “Get the facts about mail in ballots” with a large blue exclamation point.

It’s about time Trump’s Twitter account was dealt with by the company.

Right now there seems to be an issue with Trump’s Tweets– they’re so far not loading from before May 25th, yesterday, at least under “tweets and replies.” Stay tuned…

This doesn’t mean that nothing objectionable appears on Trump’s account. There are still his rants about Joe Biden and Barack Obama. Trump is still accusing MSNBC’s Scarborough of a capital crime– unsubstantiated and untrue. This despite a letter sent by the deceased Scarborough staffer’s husband, who wrote Trump a letter begging him to stop it.

Elton John Responds to Archie Williams’ Stunning “AGT” Performance: “The same spirit that the world found so inspiring with Nelson Mandela”

Archie William’s performance on “America’s Got Talent” was so devastating that even Elton John has responded. Archie sang “Don’t the Let Sun Go Down on Me” after it was revealed he’d spent 37 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. The Innocence Project rescued him.

Archie was convicted of raping and killing a woman in 1982. Of course, he was innocent. But it took all those years to exonerate him. His performance and story are memorable and moving.

Mariah Carey Fans Spent $6,000 to Push Her “Glitter” Album to Number 14 on iTunes, Now It’s Number 96

0

The latest campaign to revive one of Mariah Carey’s dormant albums on the charts is over.

“Glitter,” soundtrack to one of the worst movies ever made, is now number 96 on iTunes.

But on Friday and Saturday, “Glitter” rose to number 14. It almost went higher, but it was blunted by albums people really wanted.

In the end, Carey’s fans spent roughly $6,000 to push “Glitter” to that sad number. The album sold 599 copies, according to BuzzAngle. It cost $9.99 on iTunes per download. Another 275 copies were sold via streaming, but their cost would be counted through subscriptions and not reflected in the iTunes chart.

Last week, “Glitter” sold 2 downloads and had 3 more sales through streaming. That’s FIVE.

“Gaming” the chart means that fans organized and bought a quantity in one stretch of time to make the album shoot up the chart. In November 2018, when we were all more naive and innocent, the Carey fans managed to “Glitter” to number 1 for a day.

This time, however, there were too many new releases, and too many wise observers. Also, iTunes didn’t discount the price.

Did 600 people really spend 10 bucks apiece on this idiotic enterprise? Or is it fewer people buying more copies? Whatever it was, it’s over. There’s only so much money to throw away. BTW, Mariah Carey would have been more impressed with the fans if they’d given $6,000 to the homeless or to a COVID charity. She doesn’t get that six thousand bucks. It went to Sony Music.

Correction: The Money doesn’t go to Sony. “Glitter” was on Virgin EMI. The record was such a disaster that they paid her out of her contract. Mariah got $50 million. She owns the album. The $6,000 does go to her. Lunch money.

Woody Allen’s “Rainy Day in New York” — a Worldwide Hit– Set for Streaming in the UK and Australia June 5th

Good news!

Woody Allen’s excellent comedy, “A Rainy Day in New York,” is finally going to be released in the United Kingdom and Australia.

Signature Releasing has picked up the comedy starring Timothee Chalamet, Elle Fanning, and Selena Gomez. They will make it available on all platforms beginning June 5th.

“Rainy Day” has made $21 million in foreign release so far. Signature would have gotten it into theaters, but that’s not possible right now, so they’re forging ahead.

We can only hope a US distributor is smart enough to pick this film up soon. As I wrote in my review last August, it’s hilarious and charming, with strong performances from that main trio and a knockout cameo from Cherry Jones.

Happy 79th Birthday, Bob Dylan: Flashback to a Rare 1969 Gospel Album of Dylan Songs Featuring the Great Merry Clayton

0

It’s Bob Dylan’s 79th birthday. We’re celebrating, of course, but also anticipating his new album in a couple of weeks.

So for Bob’s birthday I thought we’d go back to 1969 to a little known album called “Dylan’s Gospel.” The great Lou Adler produced it for his then new Ode Records. Within two years, Ode would take off with Carole King, and Cheech and Chong, among others.

For “Dylan’s Gospel,” an album of Dylan covers, Adler brought in some stunning singers including Merry Clayton (the Rolling Stones, Carole King) and Gloria Jones– the very same Gloria Jones who had a soul hit in the UK with “Tainted Love,” a song Soft Cell would cover in 1979 and turn into a new whole new hit again.

The group called themselves “The Brothers and the Sisters.” There were so many terrific singers including Clydie King, Edna Wright, and so on. All the names are on Wikipedia.

I’m putting the Spotify embed below, and a promotional documentary. But first, Merry Clayton singing “The Mighty Quinn,” which had been a Dylan cover hit for Manfred Mann. Merry, a superstar, makes this a candidate for best track on the album. Merry, out on the West Coast, we salute you as always.

Dylan wasn’t into gospel in 1969. But ten years later he was, just think of “Tight Connection to My Heart.” Adler, as with everything, was ahead of his time. “Dylan’s Gospel” was a flop but it was re-released, I just learned, in 2014. Who knew?

Happy Birthday, Bob! Thanks, Lou and Merry and Gloria.

UPDATED Madonna’s New Nipple-Exposing Instagram Post is Something to Behold, Fan Writes: “You’re losing your marbles”

UPDATE Madonna, our agent provocateur, added later, hilariously: And for those of you who are offended in any way by this photo then I want to let you know that I have successfully graduated from the University of Zero F*^ks Given. Thanks for coming to the Ceremony! 🎓 Class of 2020!

EARLIER Madonna’s new Instagram post is a nipple baring, stark look at her inner thoughts. A fan writes: “You’re losing your marbles.” Madonna says: “Current Wardrobe Sitch……………”

PS No judgments here! This looks like a photo from some time ago, and I’m sure Madonna thinks of it as art. I had to censor it for our carriers, but you can see the real thing on Instagram.

Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions Tweets Donald Trump: “Your personal feelings don’t dictate who Alabama picks as their senator, the people of Alabama do.”

0

Earlier today Donald Trump, petty president, attacked his former Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Twitter. Sessions is running for the GOP Senate nomination in Alabama in a run off against someone named Tommy Tuberville. Trump wrote: “3 years ago, after Jeff Sessions recused himself, the Fraudulent Mueller Scam began. Alabama, do not trust Jeff Sessions. He let our Country down. That’s why I endorsed Coach Tommy Tuberville (@TTuberville), the true supporter of our #MAGA agenda!”

Now Sessions, so well portrayed by Kate McKinnon on “Saturday Night Live,” has responded: “Look, I know your anger, but recusal was required by law. I did my duty & you’re damn fortunate I did. It protected the rule of law & resulted in your exoneration. Your personal feelings don’t dictate who Alabama picks as their senator, the people of Alabama do.”

Republicans are crazy but really, this is over the top. That this sort of thing is now going in public and is REAL, not a satire or parody, is just INSANE. Sessions was a bad guy before the Trump administration. But we could live with that. Trump has tainted everyone, infected the common discourse, to this point.

Will it go round in circles? I hope so. To be continued…

Mariah Carey’s Fans Are Doing it Again, Gaming iTunes and Pushing The “Glitter” Album Up the iTunes Chart

0

The Mariah Carey fans, who hate me, are doing it again.

They’re gaming the iTunes chart, pushing the “Glitter” soundtrack album from the god awful movie of the same name, back up the chart. They’ve got it at number 13.

The fans did this November 2018 for two weeks, buying around 7,000 copies of “Glitter” and sending it to number 1. It fell off the chart a week later.

Just recently, Mariah’s “lambs” did this with another long and buried album, “E=MC2.” They drove it up to number 1 over a weekend. It hit the top on a Monday and was gone by Friday.

The only difference is that “E=Mc2” was discounted to $4.99. So even though it was money wasted, it wasn’t so much. The “Glitter” download is $8.99. The stakes are higher. Also sitting at number 1 right is a KPop album called “D2,” and those fans are already gaming the chart. So the lambs have a tougher go of it this time around.

“Glitter” sold no copies last week, or the week before. It will be interesting to see what the fans have done. We’ll get the first numbers for today over the weekend. Nature abhors a vacuum, and the Carey fans rush to fill it. I guess this is how they send their stimulus checks.
