UPDATE KPop Boy Band BTS Gamed iTunes for a Day But Their All Japanese Album Has Already Sunk on the Charts

0

FRIDAY JULY 17TH: The album has dropped to 13 on iTunes. A raft of new releases that people actually want to hear have taken over. Better luck next time, BTS!

WEDS JULY 15TH Sorry KPoppers. You can’t beat “Hamilton.”

KPop boyband BTS has released an all-Japanese album, a version of the CD they released in February. And it went straight to number…2 on iTunes. Not number 1.

The “Hamilton” soundtrack has kept BTS fans from succeeding at their gaming of the iTunes chart. When a new BTS album comes out, the fans buy it and buy it to push it up the charts. They do it with singles tracks, too.

The new album is sung entirely in Japanese. Do you really think American teens have swooped it up, and for purchase? If you, then like the Vapors, you’re turning Japanese, I really think so.

Let’s get back to reality. The English version of this album has sold only 273,000 copies in the US since its release. Another 250K comes from streaming. That’s not nearly as much as any other hit act. But BTS seems big, usually for a week or less.

And notice, they didn’t go head to head with Friday’s new releases. They launched mid week. By Friday, the big surge will be over, unless it turns out that Japanese language market in the US is bigger than we thought. In that case, Clint Eastwood should try again with “Letters from Iwo Jima.”

Remembering Lifetime Oscar Recipient DA Pennebaker, Born 95 Years Ago Today, Always Alive in Our Hearts

0

Today DA Pennebaker (Oscar nominee, 1st ever documentary filmmaker to get an honorary Oscar) would have turned 95 years old. His massive, sprawling family would have gathered in Sag Harbor, Long Island for a big paella and lots of fun, and Penny would have glowed basking in their light. He didn’t grow up with a family. As he often told me, he couldn’t remember his parents ever being in the same room at the same time. So he had 8 kids from three wives and a lot of grandchildren, and so many friends and admirers he couldn’t count them.

He made it to his 94th birthday last July 15th, and I got to celebrate with him and his wife and filmmaking partner Chris Hegedus a few days later. Within two weeks he would pass away at the Sag Harbor house. It was startling because we all thought he’d live forever.

So I’m celebrating Penny’s birthday today. Knowing him for twenty years certainly changed my life. I was very lucky. What I’m remember today is a lot of laughing. Penny loved a good malapropism, a twisted memory of something that might have happened, or might not. He was old enough that it probably did but we always joked about a time when he said, in answer to something, “President McKinley said…” And we responded: “Penny, did you know President McKinley?” He’d pause and say: “I might have.”

The fact is he knew so many people from so many different walks of life. His films had taken him into politics, music, theater, all kinds of things. Think of this: he hung around the White House with Jack and Bobby Kennedy. Like it was normal. He made films about them. He hung around with Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Donovan. And Janis Joplin, and Michelle and John Phillips. This week, Richard Brody writes, coincidentally, about Penny filming Stephen Sondheim recording the score to “Company” with Elaine Stritch. And it wasn’t just all these Mt. Rushmore types. He really liked David Bowie, and Depeche Mode, and the films of John Cameron Mitchell and the Coen brothers.

And he really loved Chris. Today she wrote on Facebook: “Missing my dear sweet rascal Penny on his birthday today. We had some amazing adventures together and he was so much damn fun!!”

She ran this little picture, that I thought was so cute and endearing. Look at him beaming.

So happy 95th Penny. I’m toasting you, and hoping you finally met President McKinley!

Tyra Banks Replaces Tom Bergeron as Host of “Dancing with the Stars” as ABC Gets All Multicultural and Diverse

0

Congrats to Tyra Banks. She’s the new host of “Dancing with the Stars” on ABC. She replaced Tom Bergeron, who was axed this week after hundreds of seasons.

Tyra is a star, she’s great, everyone loves her. But ABC could have handled this a lot better. In their mission to become all multicultural and diverse, they were pretty rude to Bergeron and Erin Andrews. But that’s the game in Hollywood. Every week is Shark Week.

Bergeron may have gotten the axe because he voiced unhappiness over having ex Trump press secretary, Lyin’ Sean Spicer, as a contestant. It’s a theory, but since Disney ABC chief Bob Iger loathes Trump, that doesn’t seem likely. It’s more that sensing a change in the culture, ABC decided to freshen up the look of the show. They just did it badly.

Are more changes coming to TV like this one? I would say yes. And a lot of them will be welcome. Bergeron will be fine. And Tyra will be a great success!

Scooped: Michael Jackson’s Getting His Own Dedicated SiriusXM Channel, So is Bob Marley and a Bunch of Others

0

A few weeks ago I told the Michael Jackson fans on Twitter that I good news coming for them. SiriusXM was working on dedicating a channel to the late King of Pop.

I knew what was happened, but I paused out of deference to Sirius, which I love. They weren’t ready, I was told through backchannels.

So of course, no good deed goes unpunished. Today they announced it. I can tell you that Sirius is doing a bunch of new dedicated channels. Bob Marley is getting one. Prince won’t be far off.

The stars who have them now are The Beatles, Elvis, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Tom Petty, the Grateful Dead, Frank Sinatra and pals. and a few others. Sirius is flexible enough to do pop up channels when they’re necessary. The artist just had to have a big enough catalog, and a management or record company willing to collaborate.

The Michael Jackson channel will be a big hit, I predict. There’s plenty of music. And if it’s handled as skillfully as the Beatles channel, there will be plenty of interviews and clips and audience interaction.

So that was my news, it’s just something nice we can all enjoy.

Nick Cannon Doubles Down in Viacom Firing, “Demands” Ownership of “Wild n Out” Series, and an Apology!

0

Nick Cannon doesn’t get it. He’s now doubling down in his firing from Viacom. He’s “demanding” ownership of his “WIld n Out” series, which presumably he signed away a long time ago. Cannon’s whole new post on Facebook this morning is a screed in which doesn’t apologize but further muddies the water between him and his former employer.

He writes at the end: “But now I am the one making demands. I demand full ownership of my billion dollar “Wild ‘N Out” brand that I created, and they will continue to misuse and destroy without my leadership! I demand that the hate and back door bullying cease and while we are at it, now that the truth is out, I demand the Apology!”

He says he tried to apologize to Shari Redstone. “I also went as far to reach out to Ms. Shari Redstone, the owner of Viacom, to have a conversation of reconciliation and actually apologize if I said anything that pained or hurt her or her community. Dead Silence! So that’s when I realized they don’t want a conversation or growth, they wanted to put the young negro in his place. They wanted to show me who is boss, hang me out to dry and make an example of anyone who says something they don’t agree with.”

Is he crazy? He’s going to get fired from Fox and lose his whole career at once. As you read down in here you will the usual “the Jewish community is supporting me” stuff that comes after an anti-Semitic attack. No, Nick, they are not supporting you. This is delusional.

Here’s the Facebook post. I’ve highlighted certain sections.

Truth and Reconciliation.

I am deeply saddened in a moment so close to reconciliation that the powers that be, misused an important moment for us to all grow closer together and learn more about one another. Instead the moment was stolen and highjacked to make an example of an outspoken black man. I will not be bullied, silenced, or continuously oppressed by any organization, group, or corporation. I am disappointed that Viacom does not understand or respect the power of the black community.

I was a member of the Viacom “Family” for over Twenty years. Since I was a minor, we worked together to make great positive entertainment and I was handed many opportunities that I am grateful for. At17 years old, I was deemed the youngest staff writer in TV history on their various Nickelodeon series. In 2009 the wonderful and amazing Cyma Zarghami blessed me with the opportunity to become the youngest television Chairman in history, placing the teen division of Viacom solely in my hands as an executive. She along with the strong and brilliant Marva Smalls guided me through the corporate infrastructure that at times felt overwhelming due to many doubting my abilities as a black man. I am forever grateful to them for their love and kindness as leaders and their matriarch like care for me over the years. With their support, I rose to the occasion at Viacom creating philanthropic opportunities and award programing such as the HALO Awards which awarded youth grants for their nonprofit organizations to change the world and end everything from bigotry, homophobia, racism, and even attempting to find a cure for AIDS and Cancer. These young people had big ideas, big hearts and more importantly big optimism, just like myself. We successfully brought the world closer together for over 9 years with every big-name celebrity and major corporation you could think of, truly one of my proudest accomplishments in entertainment. Not because of ratings or numbers, but because I was able to empower the next generation. My time at Viacom also birthed one of my other greatest creative accomplishments; their longest running comedy series and the most successful Hip Hop programming in Television History “Wild ‘N Out”. An idea in which I self-financed out my own pocket and presented to MTV. I created a billion-dollar brand that expanded across a multitiered empire that is still Viacom’s biggest digital brand, touring business, talent discovery and incubation system and successful restaurant franchise. Based on trust and empty promises, my ownership was swindled away from me. For Viacom to be so deceptive is no surprise; they have been mistreating and robbing our community for years, underpaying talent on their biggest brands like Love & Hip Hop, all of BET programming and of course, Wild ‘N Out.

I don’t have to defend myself here, the proof is in the history. I believed that the corporation was becoming more progressive and willing to create helpful spaces and dialogue in these difficult and uncertain times of 2020. Instead they chose to recently ban all advertisement that supported George Floyd and Breonna Taylor who we are all still seeking justice for. I also went as far to reach out to Ms. Shari Redstone, the owner of Viacom, to have a conversation of reconciliation and actually apologize if I said anything that pained or hurt her or her community. Dead Silence! So that’s when I realized they don’t want a conversation or growth, they wanted to put the young negro in his place. They wanted to show me who is boss, hang me out to dry and make an example of anyone who says something they don’t agree with. But like the great Shirley Chisholm, “I am unbossed and unbought and unbothered”. I respectfully stepped away from oppressive corporations in the past. NBC threatened and mistreated me for years, but I was the bigger person and abandoned an 8-figure salary on their number one hit show “Americas Got Talent” and currently stand by my friend and Queen Gabrielle Union in her fight against oppression.

I took my talents and executive creativity to my open minded and willing partners at the Fox Television network to create the current #1 hit show on television “The Masked Singer” in which I host and executive produce. We are also gearing up to launch a daily talk show based in the historic community of Harlem, where the ultimate goal is to bring people closer together during these difficult times. Right now is the time for strong voices and compassionate thinkers to step up and create a dialogue of healing. Dr. King said, “We must learn to grow together as brothers, or we will parish together as fools”. Ironically at that time our government called him “the most dangerous Negro in the country” and labeled him a Terrorist. As we all know Hollywood and the media is a dirty business. Still, I honestly can’t believe that Viacom has such poor council that would allow them to make such a divisive decision in the midst of protests and civil uprising within our current pandemic. Truly an unwise decision. For them to take it one step further and flat out lie in their official press release, saying that I didn’t attempt to reconcile the situation when on two separate occasions I specifically acknowledged and openly requested a forum to be corrected. Malcolm X said it best, “The media is the most powerful entity on earth, it will have you hating the people being oppressed and loving the people doing the oppressing; making the innocent guilty and the guilty innocent.”

My hope and original goal was to use this moment to show healing and acceptance and prayed that Viacom would use their powers for good. Instead I am now receiving death threats, hate messages calling me an ungrateful Nigger and beyond. Viacom’s goal to keep me from providing for my family and lineage will be foiled. They can try to kick me while I’m down or force me to kiss the master’s feet in public for shame and ridicule, but instead I stand firm on my square with my fist in the air repeating my mantra, “You can’t fire a Boss!”.

In a pleasant turn of events and the best blessing in all of this hurtful attack is the outpouring of love and support from the Jewish community. It has been amazing. I have spoken with many Rabbis, clergy, Professors and coworkers who offer their sincere help. I must apologize to my Jewish Brothers and Sisters for putting them in such a painful position, which was never my intention, but I know this whole situation has hurt many people and together we will make it right. I have dedicated my daily efforts to continuing conversations to bring the Jewish Community and the African American community closer together, embracing our differences and sharing our commonalities. Through the guidance of my multicultural team which embodies several people from the Jewish Community, specifically Michael Goldman my business partner for 3 decades who discovered me at the Hollywood Improv when I was doing Stand Up as a kid. Through thick and thin he has been by my side. Yelling at me when I talk too much and laughing with me as we’ve always overcome adversity together. I love you my brother, thank you for helping me become the man that I am today. And as we embark on this next “Ncredible” journey together we will bring our two persecuted communities together like we always planned. He and so many gracious people from the Jewish Community are showering me with love and helping to guide me to the Promise land, literally l am excited to announce that I have been invited to Israel which is a lifelong dream where I will receive teachings, lessons and truth about the Jewish history. As someone who is in pursuit for my PHD in Theology and Divinity and just received a degree in Criminal Justice from the Great Howard University, this will be an enriching, enlightening and overall exciting trip!

As for Viacom, who is now on the wrong side of history, I will continue to pray for you. I don’t blame any individual, I blame the oppressive and racist infrastructure. Systemic racism is what this world was built on and was the subject in which I was attempting to highlight in the recent clips that have been circulating from my podcast. If I have furthered the hate speech, I wholeheartedly apologize.

But now I am the one making demands. I demand full ownership of my billion dollar “Wild ‘N Out” brand that I created, and they will continue to misuse and destroy without my leadership! I demand that the hate and back door bullying cease and while we are at it, now that the truth is out, I demand the Apology!

Nick Cannon’s Syndicated Fall Talk Show Could Be Jeopardized by Anti-Semitic Comments and Backing of Louis Farrakhan

Nick Cannon’s blossoming scandals could jeopardize more than just his “Wild and Out” show on VH-1 and his Nickelodeon contract.

Cannon is set to host his own syndicated talk show starting September 21st. The producers are LionsGate’s Debmar- Mercury. The show has been “cleared” in 90% of TV markets and will air on Fox stations.

But the revelations of Cannon’s anti-Semitic remarks on his podcast, “Cannon’s Class,” and his clear approval of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan could cause a major problem here.

Cannon’s ties to Fox TV could also be damaged at “The Masked Singer.”

I’ve asked Debmar-Mercury for a comment, and will report back when I receive it. Their outside rep will only say, “No comment.”

Nick Cannon Fired from MTV-VH1-Nickelodeon for Anti Semitic Remarks and Backing Louis Farrakhan, Is His “Masked Singer” Gig in Jeopardy?

0

Nick Cannon is over and out at VH-1 and MTV’s “Wild and Out.” He’s also out at Nickelodeon. They’re all parts of Viacom, where Cannon has been ousted for making anti-Semitic remarks, standing by them, and backing Louis Farrakhan on his YouTube podcast.

Here’s what Viacom says, first of all: “ViacomCBS condemns bigotry of any kind and we categorically denounce all forms of anti-Semitism. We have spoken with Nick Cannon about an episode of his podcast “Cannon’s Class” on YouTube, which promoted hateful speech and spread anti-Semitic conspiracy theories.”

Cannon, well known for being Mariah Carey’s ex husband, has potentially destroyed his career in one fell swoop. He also hosts Fox’s “Masked Singer,” a huge hit. I can’t imagine that will go one much longer.

“Cannon’s Class” on YouTube is an eye opener. In the interview cited, Cannon interviewed former Public Enemy member Richard “Professor Griff” Griffin — who himself was fired from the group for making anti-Semitic comments in a 1989 interview. He repeatedly referenced fringe conspiracy theories about Jewish people. During the conversation, Cannon said Black people are the “true Hebrews” and praised Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.

Farrakan praising is not uncommon to “Cannon’s Class.” Cannon claims in the interview that “every time I’ve heard him speak, it’s positive, it’s powerful, it’s uplifting,” and yet Farrakhan has been “demonized.”

Also recently featured in “Cannon’s Class” is a full length interview with someone named Minister Abdul Malik Sayyid Muhammad. Every conversation circles around Jews, and how much the Nation of Islam doesn’t “hate” Jews but resents them. This is just hogwash. It’s hurtful, it’s a lie, and it’s meant to cause schisms between the black and Jewish communities for no reason other than hate.

There’s some disconnect here. The passive followers of Farrakhan either don’t understand the anti-Semitic references or they’re immune to them. Or they don’t take care. Ironically, Nick Cannon has had nothing but success without any major obstacles. I think now he’ll find them.

I’m sorry, I liked Nick. I met him at his engagement party with Mariah at LA Reid’s Hamptons home, we always had a nice relationship. But this is unacceptable because he refuses to apologize. This is what he wrote on Facebook as an explanation. It’s no good.

Anyone who knows me knows that I have no hate in my heart nor malice intentions. I do not condone hate speech nor the spread of hateful rhetoric. We are living in a time when it is more important than ever to promote unity and understanding.

The Black and Jewish communities have both faced enormous hatred, oppression persecution and prejudice for thousands of years and in many ways have and will continue to work together to overcome these obstacles.
When you look at The Media, and other sectors in our nation’s history, African Americans and The people of the Jewish community have partnered to create some of the best, most revolutionary work we know today.

I am an advocate for people’s voices to be heard openly, fairly and candidly. In today’s conversation about anti-racism and social justice, I think we all – including myself – must continue educating one another and embrace uncomfortable conversations – it’s the only way we ALL get better. I encourage more healthy dialogue and welcome any experts, clergy, or spokespersons to any of my platforms to hold me accountable and correct me in any statement that I’ve made that has been projected as negative. Until then, I hold myself accountable for this moment and take full responsibility because My intentions are only to show that as a beautiful human species we have way more commonalities than differences, So let’s embrace those as well as each other. We All Family!

Chuck Woolery’s Son Gets “COVID Connection,” Tests Positive for Virus After Game Show Host Said “Everyone is Lying”

Lost in the confusion of yesterday’s Tweets, ex game show host Chuck Woolery made a startling admission. His son has tested positive for coronavirus.

That’s one day after Donald Trump retweeted Woolery’s declaration that the whole thing was a hoax.

First this:

then this:

He followed that news up with this Tweet: “Let me clear this lie up,” he tweeted. “I have never claimed that Covid 19 isn’t real as many news stories have falsely stated. I don’t believe it is a conspiracy theory. I just don’t trust the information we have been given about it. I do believe it is being politicized. Is that clear enough?”

This guy is a perfect example of the drone like Trump followers who advocate stupidity and ignorance, then have to backtrack when reality comes knocking.

Ironically, he won’t shut up. He has kept blathering away on Twitter. Condolences to his son who must live with this inane old man. The really sad part of this is that Chuck had a son who died in 1986 in a motorcycle accident. You’d think he’d have more respect than to keep wheezing on in Trump’s favor and wise up already.

Reality Bites: Telluride Film Festival Cancels Annual Gathering for 1st Time Ever, Will Other Festivals Follow?

0

The Telluride Film Festival has thrown in the towel, sorry to say. They’ve cancelled the 2020 edition for the first time ever since their founding in 1974.

The town’s school board wouldn’t let them use their buildings. The town didn’t want it, either. And plus, no one was going to go there, through two airports each way, mingle in crowds with masks and so on. Until there’s a vaccine this won’t be happening.

Will the other festivals follow this decision? Toronto? Sundance (that one looks doubtful). The New York Film Festival? I think this year is a scratch. Plus, with release dates moving toward December and January, studios are not going to show their films this early.

Maybe we can all learn Latin, or how to build a computer. It’s frustrating, I know. And the Telluride economy will miss the moolah.

Here’s the statement:

After months of intense due diligence around physically holding an event, we’ve come to the heartbreaking but unanimous conclusion to cancel this year’s Labor Day celebration of film in Telluride.

While there will be those who might say they’re not surprised by it, that this was inevitable, we beg to differ. It didn’t have to be this way. Until the past week or so, we had a very good plan to put on the SHOW safely. But with a seemingly unending number of new cases of Covid-19 and the national chaos around it, even the best strategy is threatened by this out of control environment. No matter how much many of us wear our masks and observe social distancing protocols, the pandemic has worsened rather than improved and the health and safety of you – our passholders, filmmakers, the people of Telluride and its surrounding areas – cannot be compromised.

As you may know, we have been working cooperatively with our fellow fall film festival partners to champion global cinema and its artists. We hope that many of you will seek out and discover the titles we’ve selected for this year’s program at the New York Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, or Venice Film Festival, or when they’re made available on a wider basis. We will announce soon what we have carefully programmed in the hopes that you will experience as we did, the best in film this year. There are some incredible, powerful, and beautiful gems and we’re excited to extol their virtues when the time is right. Follow these titles, support them. We intend to champion them outside of the festival as best we can.

For those who have supported us and believe in what we are trying to do, our gratitude is enormous. Thank
you. We will need you in the coming months in many ways. Let’s light candles now to conjure a better 2021 and Labor Day weekend in Telluride, together, under the stars in the mountains doing what many of us love the most. The way we prefer to experience cinema will return. Let’s make it so.

We wish you good health, peace and may we collectively move forward to a better world.

We understand that film festivals and their long-term health are not top of mind today. A safe vaccine, vital medical interventions for those sick and properly enforced health regulations are. However, we do ask that you take this moment to consider a world where gathering around a shared love of culture is no longer possible and what that means for the psychological condition of the world. If the prospect prompts a sense of despair, please advocate and champion the return of our gatherings that provide vital nourishment and oxygen to humanity’s soul, at the appropriate time, of course!

We will follow up with information and options regarding passes in a separate email.

Watch Here: Michael Jackson’s Kids Collaborate on Paris’s New 9 Minute Soundflowers Extended Video

0

Paris Jackson and Gabriel Glenn’s Soundflowers are struggling to get sales. So far, few are paying for their new EP (482 copies sold via streaming in three weeks).

But the good news is that they have a new extended video, produced by Paris’s brother, Prince Jackson for his King’s Son Productions. They’ve done a great job, too.

Michael Jackson fans are telling me on Twitter that they’re not supporting Paris because they think she doesn’t like them. I don’t think that’s true, but she should think about that if she wants to build a fan base. She needs them.
