RIP Kevin Dobson, Star of “Kojak” and “Knots Landing” was 77, Was on CBS Screens for 20 Uninterrupted Years

0

Sad news that Kevin Dobson, a terrific actor and a great guy, has died at age 77. Dobson had a long run on “Knots Landing” as Mack Mackenzie, the good guy lead of the show, from 1982- 1993. His character was married to Michele Lee’s Karen, the “moral center” of the soap opera that ran 14 seasons. Dobson was the rare kind of blue collar macho guy who was also a romantic lead.

Before “Knots Landing,” Dobson was a breakout on “Kojak” starring Telly Savalas. He played Detective Bobby Crocker. Men and women loved him. I remember when the show started (I was a wee lad) but Kevin Dobson was the It Guy. And that never stopped. He was literally on CBS screens from 1973 to 1993, 20 years, without a break, doing movies of the week and every series where he could guest star.

“Kojak” overlapped with “Knots” because Dobson was not in the second show’s original cast. He replaced Don Murray, who played Michele Lee’s first husband. But Murray had been a movie star and didn’t want to re-sign his contract, so they killed off his character after two seasons. Ironically, Murray just turned 91. Three years ago he had a career Renaissance on the revived “Twin Peaks.”

Dobson is survived by his wife, Susan, who he marred in 1968, three children, and fans all over the world.

Box Office: Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” Grabs $20 Mil in the US, $150 Mil Worldwide After Delayed Opening

0

It didn’t play in New York or a lot of New Jersey or California. But Christoper Nolan’s “Tenet” — which also didn’t use drive ins but regular theaters where it could — time traveled to hit status over the weekend.

“Tenet” earned $20,200,00 in 2,810 theaters from the previews that began Tuesday through Friday and Labor Day weekend. Worldwide,  it took in $146 million. With a $200 million budget, the signs are good for a break even $450 million worldwide take…over time.

“Tenet” should have “Legs”– especially with repeat viewings. I think you have to go back at least once to try and find the clues and Easter eggs. Enough people have seen it now to realize it’s Himesh Patel on the speedboat with Elizabeth Debicki toward the end. Patel starred in a movie called “Yesterday,” which I think was a clue and a little joke.

“Tenet” will be an Oscar nominee, and so should Nolan this year. If not, we’ll go back in time and fix it!

Exclusive: Tony Award Winners Elaine May, Mary Louise Parker, Danny Burstein Starring in Zoom Movie Written and Directed by Peter Hedges

0

There isn’t much movie production these days, and what there isn’t so interesting.

But I’m told that writer director Peter Hedges, whose top notch credits include “Ben is Back,” “Dan in Real Life,” and “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” is busy making a film right now.

There’s no title and the plot remains a secret, but Hedges is doing the whole thing via Zoom. I’m assuming we won’t see the little boxes, but it will be edited together to make it look like a film.

What I have heard is that it stars three Tony Award winners: Elaine May, Mary Louise Parker, and Danny Burstein. They play mother, son, and daughter– so it has to be a comedy. Danny won his Tony for “Fiddler on the Roof” and is starring in “Moulin Rouge” right now on Broadway in an alternate universe. Elaine is the legendary writer-director-actress, beloved by all. She was supposed to star in “Love Letters” this summer on stage in New York.

Mary Louise Parker’s Tony was for “Proof,” but if there had been Tonys this year, she would have won for “The Sound Inside.” Amazing performance.

We have to give credit to filmmakers who are doing something, anything of interest during this period of inertia. I can’t wait to see what the result is!

In the meantime, go check out Peter Hedges’ other movies on all the platforms including the very good “Pieces of April” with Patricia Clarkson and Katie Holmes, and “Ben is Back” with Julia Roberts and Lucas Hedges.

Movies Are Back in Theaters But People Not So Much: “Mulan” Doesn’t Excite Asian Audiences

0

Movies are back in theaters in some countries. The people, not so much.

“Mulan” is only playing on Disney Plus in North America, but out in the world you can see it with pop corn.

Asian-oriented, “Mulan” should have done well in those countries. But the top box office numbers over there aren’t too exciting.

According to Exhibitor Relations, “Mulan” was met with apathy, scoring just $5.9 million in 9 territories including Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia. Of course, those countries may recall the original “Mulan,” and hold it close to their hearts.

“Mulan” won’t have box office results in the US because there is no reporting from Disney about streaming numbers.

Fox News Ignores Jennifer Griffin Appearance on Neil Cavuto, Refuses to Acknowledge Her Trump Military Scoop and “Unimpeachable Sources”

0

Remarkable: Fox News and its website, foxnews.com, continues to ignore the network’s national security correspondent, Jennifer Griffin. Griffin confirmed The Atlantic story by Jeffrey Goldberg citing Donald Trump’s disrespect to the US military and John McCain. Griffin also confirmed Trump’s comments about veterans who served in Vietnam as “suckers” and “Losers.”

If Fox News were a real network, Chris Wallace would be interviewing Griffin this morning on their Sunday news show.  Instead guest host Bret Baier — who has given vocal support to Griffin — is interviewing Trump lackey Steve Mnuchin.

Trump has called for Griffin to be fired, and must be getting some satisfaction from her disloyal treatment by her employer. But Griffin has fought back. On Cavuto’s show she said:

“My sources are not anonymous to me and I doubt they are anonymous to the president. I can tell you that my sources are unimpeachable.”

Cavuto told Griffin:  “you are a very good reporter—and then some. Jennifer Griffin following the story here. She’s pretty scrupulous when it comes to making sure all the i’s are dotted and all the t’s are crossed.”

Cavuto is not alone among Fox Newsers  in defending Griffin. Many besides Baier have Tweeted their support. But the really crazy hardcover company people– who may think Roger Ailes is still alive — are publicly attacking their colleague. No word yet from house cowards like Juan Williams who value their mortgage payments over the fate of the country.

Meantime, Foxnews.com pretends none of this ever happened. There is no clip from the Cavuto show and no reference to Griffin’s scoop anywhere on the site.

UPDATE: Griffin was just given a vocal endorsement from Howard Kurtz on his Sunday show.

Taylor Swift’s “Folklore” Hits 1.5 Million in Sales, Remains At Number 1 for Most of Summer

0

Back on July 24th, Taylor Swift surprised us all with a new album called “Folklore.” It’s been number 1 ever since then.

This week “Folklore” crossed the 1.5 million sales mark. That includes 819,000 CDs and paid downloads, mostly the latter since physical product wasn’t available right away.

“Folklore” now comes in many varieties including deluxe editions, CDs, digital, grilled and poached. But whatever way it comes, Swift has earned a Grammy Album of the Year nomination if not a win. Last year, she was penalized by the record industry and got few nods for “Lover,” her previous album. That was because she spoke out against Big Machine, Scott Borchetta and Scooter Braun. It wasn’t subtle. Let’s hope the new leaders a NARAS get it right this year. “Folklore” should get a a bunch of nods including Album, Song, Record, Female Pop Vocal, Duet, etc.

And I never even got a cardigan. (But I only wear natural fibers.)

Fox News Internal War: Website Ignores Scoop from National Security Correspondent that Trump Anti-Military Story is True

0

Fox News is having an internal civil war. It’s a battle for the truth and not alternative facts.

Jennifer Griffin, 51, a Harvard graduate, has been with the network since 1999. That’s 21 years of reporting as National Security Correspondent. Roger Ailes hired her in the era before he lost his mind and started harassing women. This was when he was only interested in journalists who had the right stuff.

Yesterday Griffin scored the scoop of a lifetime by working her sources. She posted to Twitter a series of posts confirming the reporting in The Atlantic magazine by Jeffrey Goldberg that Donald Trump thinks the military is full of “suckers” and “losers.”

Griffin appeared once on air on Fox News with anchor Jon Scott, and then not again. Her story was not repeated, and it’s never made it to the Fox News website. She’s being muffled from inside. I know what that’s like, when the forces of evil block the truth at Fox News. It used to happen regularly under John Moody, the crazy right wing chief of news in those days. (He was eventually decommissioned after posting a racist editorial.)

I’ve written to the editorial forces at Foxnews.com but no one has responded. They are like Pravda, the old Russian propaganda news service. No one is allowed to comment.

After Griffin wrote her pieces, Donald Trump Tweeted that she should be fired. That prompted a defense from Fox News’s Brett Baier.

Griffin wrote:

“Two former sr Trump admin officials confirm .

@JeffreyGoldberg reporting that President Trump disparaged veterans and did not want to drive to honor American war dead at Aisne-Marne Cemetery outside Paris.”
and
“According to one former senior Trump administration official: “When the President spoke about the Vietnam War, he said, ‘It was a stupid war. Anyone who went was a sucker’.””
and
This former official heard the President say about American veterans: “What’s in it for them? They don’t make any money.” Source: “It was a character flaw of the President. He could not understand why someone would die for their country, not worth it.”
and
Regarding Trump’s July 4th military parade, during a planning session at the White House after seeing the Bastille Day parade in 2017, the President said regarding the inclusion of “wounded guys” “that’s not a good look” “Americans don’t like that,” source confirms.
Among other things. You can only imagine what’s going on internally now. Griffin went around them, thank goodness, to get the word out. After 21 years, she knows how this operation works. Clearly Fox News was never going to allow her a proper forum. One appearance with Jon Scott (who is a company soldier) was not going to get her news out. She was smart to Tweet. But now we may never  hear from her again.

Fox News: “When the President spoke about the Vietnam War, he said, ‘It was a stupid war. Anyone who went was a sucker’.”

0

More from Fox News’s Jennifer Griffin, confirming Jeffrey Goldberg’s smashing story in the Atlantic:

“When the President spoke about the Vietnam War, he said, ‘It was a stupid war. Anyone who went was a sucker’.”

So far, Fox News on TV and online has not featured their own reporting. It must be wild over there. Griffin has split open the story. What family with a military connection can vote for Trump now?

Shocker: Fox News’s Jennifer Griffin Confirms Atlantic Magazine Story about Trump Disdain for Military and McCain

0

Fox News National Correspondent Jennifer Griffin says she has confirmed with two sources the gist of the Atlantic magazine story about Donald Trump’s disdain of the military and John McCain.

For Fox News to go with this, Griffin– through her superiors — has the implicit approval of Rupert Murdoch to take Trump down. Trump will be livid that Fox News has confirmed Jeffrey Goldberg’s excellent reporting.

Griffin: “Two former sr Trump admin officials confirm .@JeffreyGoldberg
reporting that President Trump disparaged veterans and did not want to drive to honor American war dead at Aisne-Marne Cemetery outside Paris.”

Griffin writes on Twitter: Regarding McCain, “The President just hated John McCain. He always asked, ‘Why do you see him as a hero?” Two sources confirmed the President did not want flags lowered but others in the White House ordered them at half mast. There was a stand off and then the President relented.”

also:
Regarding Trump’s July 4th military parade, during a planning session at the White House after seeing the Bastille Day parade in 2017, the President said regarding the inclusion of “wounded guys” “that’s not a good look” “Americans don’t like that,” source confirms.

Red Flags as Anna Faris Is Out at Allison Janney TV Show “Mom” Just Before Season 8 Begins

0

Allison Janney is going to be left as a “Mom” without a child. Anna Faris is splitting from the CBS sitcom minutes before the 8th season starts shooting.

What? This was certainly not planned in the spring when season 7 ended and the show was renewed. Faris is not in any kind of demand for movie roles, so this makes no sense and all explanations are not to be believed.

Something is wrong, folks. There is concern about Faris’s health. She’s been dogged for years about rumors of possible anorexia. She’s even posted pictures to Instagram that the tabloids raced to call “scary skinny.” She’s lamented on her podcast of being labeled as ‘too thin’ but this abrupt exit from a show where she was being paid a handsome salary with incentives to stay for many seasons is a red flag.

Faris posted a photo to Instagram from a chat with actress Ellie Kemper from four days ago that should really get people wondering what’s wrong. Faris looks sick, I’m sorry.

How can you have a show called “Mom” without a kid, albeit a grown one? The show will now have to be called “Grand Mom.” Or Ashton Kutcher can be cast as her character.

Here are the official statements:

“The past seven years on Mom have been some of the most fulfilling and rewarding of my career,” Faris said in a statement. “I’m so thankful to Chuck [Lorre], the writers, and my amazing castmates for creating a truly wonderful work experience. While my journey as Christy has come to an end, allowing me to pursue new opportunities, I’ll be watching next season and rooting for my TV family.”

WBTV, CBS and Chuck Lorre Productions offered their own joint statement on Faris’ departure: “From the inception of Mom, Anna was the first and only choice for the role of Christy. We are so proud of the stories we have been able to tell during Anna’s seven years with us. We wish Anna all the best, and we thank her for her beautiful portrayal.”
