Monkee Time: Micky Dolenz Album of Mike Nesmith Songs Unexpectedly Sells Out at Amazon, Reorders Coming

Amazon usually has enough of everything in stock. But they underestimated the demand for Micky Dolenz’s new album, “Dolenz Sings Nesmith,” a collection of gorgeous new recordings of Mike Nesmith songs by his Monkees c0hort Micky Dolenz.

Right now, the words “Temporarily out of stock” have gone up on Amazon. I am assured that a new order has been placed. In the meantime, you can buy the CD on Micky’s website.

A long time ago in a far off galaxy, the great singer Harry Nilsson recorded a whole album of songs by the still not so well known Randy Newman. It was a big hit and a cult favorite. I remember that album in everyone’s collections. It was a must have.

Micky remembered it, too, and wanted to do a similar project with Nesmith for the last, uh, 50 years. Mike’s son, Christian, produced it, and the album cover is a tribute to “Nilsson Sings Newman.”

It’s not just Micky’s voice that is outstanding on this collection. Or the songs, which including Mike’s hit that he wrote for Linda Ronstadt, “Different Drum.” It’s also the band. They are insanely good. They are tight and in the groove. The production is sterling. This CD has not left my car for two weeks!

Give it a play here on Spotify but get a physical copy if you can. The album package is beautiful, with liner notes, lyrics and photos. I am truly impressed. Why does Micky sound just like he did on those Monkees hits? Wonderful!

You Tube Host Sean Evans (Who?) Gets Daytime Emmy Nomination, Beating Famous Names Like Ellen DeGeneres, Tamron Hall, Whoopi Goldberg

0

Sean who? Some guy named Sean Evans who hosts a show on YouTube was nominated for a Daytime Emmy award for Outstanding Talk Show Host last night.

Such is the power of YouTube that this Evans, whose name we’ll learn now, beat out Ellen DeGeneres, Tamron Hall, and a number of marquee names. Also, Sean Evans isn’t even on television! He’s on YouTube. His show, called “Hot Ones,” is on the internet.

That’s a big deal, I’d say. While syndicators are scrambling to find new faces for talk shows, this guy has an Emmy nod and no one knows who he is.

The Daytime Emmys for some reason released two categories last night the others will come today at noon. The actresses from “General Hospital” got three of the five top spots. (They could have had all five, really, as Maura West and Laura Wright didn’t make it, which is unusual.) There were no lead actresses from “Days of our Lives.”

Here are the two categories so far:

The nominees for Outstanding Talk Show Host are: Drew Barrymore (The Drew Barrymore Show); Sean Evans (Hot Ones); Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager (Today Show with Hoda and Jenna); Kelly Clarkson (The Kelly Clarkson Show); and Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest (LIVE with Kelly and Ryan).

The nominees for Outstanding Performance by a Lead Actress in a Drama Series are: Jacqueline MacInnes Wood (Steffy, The Bold and the Beautiful); Melissa Claire Egan (Chelsea, The Young and the Restless); and from General Hospital, Genie Francis (Laura), Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis), and Finola Hughes (Anna/Alex).

Ratings: “Billboard Music Awards” Drops 36% from Last Year, Trounced by “American Idol” With Double the Numbers

0

“American Idol” isn’t much of a powerhouse anymore but it’s still strong enough to knock off the Billboard Music Awards.

The “Idol” finale scored 5.4 million viewers, more than twice as many fans as the BBMAs on Sunday night.

The two shows ran against each for the whole night on their respective networks. “Idol” was on ABC, “BBMA” was on NBC.

“Idol” featured not only the big season ending competition but also big star performers like Chaka Khan and Sheryl Crow. Their performances were top notch, too.

The Awards recycled the same stuff from the Grammy Awards and before that the American Music Awards. The audience wasn’t interested. Billboard Music Awards was down to 2.333 million viewers, off by 36% from last year’s 3.6 million. That’s a new all time low after a previous all time low.

Even BTS couldn’t save the Awards, presenting their new hit, “Butter.” Alicia Keys shined of course with a medley of greatest hits, but otherwise the music was mostly deadening. There was no country performer, which was a BIG Mistake. But the show had “banned” Morgan Wallen and still gave him three big awards off camera. Ridiculous.

If these Awards had been on the CW Network, it would have been fine. But this was one of the big three networks.

CBS won the night easily with “60 Minutes,” “The Equalizer,” “NCIS Los Angeles” and the series finale of “NCIS New Orleans.”

Sweet: 18 Year Old Pop Tart Olivia Rodrigo Has Already Sold 157K Copies of Her Debut Album “Sour” In 4 Days

0

Olivia Rodrigo is an 18 year old sensation.

Her debut album, “Sour,” has sold 157.000 copies since Thursday. Around 33K copies are paid downloads.

That’s all in four days.

Rodrigo, whose “Driver’s License” was a surprise hit single during the winter, now has two more singles in the top 10 and they’re selling in the vicinity of half a million copies independent of the album.

Rodrigo’s appearance on “Saturday Night Live” two weeks ago didn’t seem to have a lot of impact. Maybe it was just delayed gratification for her fans. They waited for the album. Now they’re eating it up.

Hitsdailydouble is predicting around 250,000 copies of “Sour” sold by Thursday night. That may be an underestimate.

The good news is, “Sour” is a dynamic, fun, solid pop album, an impressive debut especially for so young an artist. “Sour” is going the way of Alanis Morissette’s “Jagged Little Pill” as a landmark record for teen girls and for pop fans in general.

It’s only Monday. Olivia Rodrigo is having the best week of her life, and she’s too young to understand what that means. I hope Taylor or Katy reach out to her. She’ll need a mentor in this biz with that level of success.

PS Kudos to her collaborator, Dan Nigro, the Ben Margulies of this album.

“NCIS Los Angeles” Jettisons Two Long Time Actors in Budget Cuts: Renee Felice Smith and Barrett Foa Exit Show

0

The great part of being on a long running prime time series is the money.

The bad part is also the money.

As a show ages, budgets constrict. The network is paying less as ratings decline. Ask all the people who’ve been sent to early deaths on “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Such is the case for “NCIS Los Angeles,” starring Chris O’Donnell, LLCoolJ, and Linda Hunt. They’re the principal players. Everyone else has a target on their backs.

And so say goodbye to Renee Felice Smith and Barrett Foa. The latter actor has been there all 12 seasons, the former came in Season 2. Last night their characters rode off into the sunset together. They will meet up with three “Grey’s” actors who were let go this spring, and numerous others. Ellen Pompeo will serve them all martinis at her imaginary Malibu brunch spot.

Showrunner Scott Gemmill rationalized the actors’ finale to TVLine:  “Both Renée and Barrett have been on the show a long time, and they’re both very ambitious individuals who have projects that they want to do on their own — and we’ve been giving them time off to do so,” Gemmill said. “It seemed like a natural time to let them go off and do some other things, and give [their characters] what is a happy, hopefully, ending.”

Look, at least weren’t killed in an explosion. Be happy for little things.

Any good news? Linda Hunt returned to the show physically in last night’s episode. It’s hoped she’ll be on full time next season. Seeing her in those syndicated reruns is always a pleasure. But go look at her in “The Year of Living Dangerously.” Still great cinema.

Chayce Beckham Wins “American Idol” as iTunes Predicted, Single “23” Shoots Up to Number 2

0

All wrapped up with a bow on it: Chayce Beckham won “American Idol” last night. The show knew it, as Chayce’s single, “23” had been a hit for a week on iTunes, selling 25,000 copies. It’s the number 1 country song, and now it’s the number 2 pop song, right behind two versions of the new BTS concoction.

The show even saved Beckham singing “23” right til the very end. All nice and neat. The machine still works.

The two runners up, Grace Kinstler, and Willie Spence, will go on into the books and maybe have careers.

No one knows what happened to last year’s winner, Just Sam. As I’ve said before, if anyone knows, please drop me a line at showbiz411@gmail.com

Bob Dylan’s 80th Birthday Broadway Gift: Hit Musical “Girl from the North Country” Resumes October 13th

0

Did “Girl from the North Country” ever open on Broadway? Did I write about the opening night? OMG yes. It was a thousand years ago. March 5, 2020.

Well, the wonderful magical musical is coming back. Today is Bob Dylan’s birthday and the show has announced a return to performances on October 13th.

Mare Winningham and Jay O. Sanders lead an amazing cast in this musical with songs from our Poet Laureate (at least mine) and Nobel Prize winner.

“Girl from the North Country” opened on March 5th, but then the Broadway League decided that only shows that had opened before that would be eligible for the 2020 Tony Awards — which have never been given out.

So the show is now eligible for 2022 Tony Awards, which is fine. It could still win, although it would have definitely won in 2020.

Here’s my review from March 6, 2020. And below is a new video made by the show. Get your tickets now.

Kate Winslet’s “Mare of Easttown” Finds the Killer, Or Does It? More Red Herrings Than a Fish Monger

0

SPOILER
SPOILER
SPOILER

Do we now know Erin’s killer? “Mare of Easttown” gave us a confession tonight. It also gave us a big red herring.

We are led to believe that Billy, the sad sack brother of Mare’s brother in law, John, did the deed. John extruded a confession from him under duress. Then he took him on fishing trip. We know he’s got a gun.

But we can surmise Billy is too pathetic to have done it. So it would seem that Mare is about to walk in on John killing Billy and framing him for Erin’s murder. John, then, would be the real killer.

Maybe he is. But if he is, why did HBO hire Guy Pearce to play Mare’s boyfriend, Richard, a seemingly nice guy who’s just hanging around in Easttown? Pearce is a movie star, he costs a lot, and wasn’t just bored at home.

More red herrings.

So something’s up. Unless this show fizzles like The Undoing in its last act, Richard the writer is going to play into the final episode. I still think he’s related to dead Colin and the mother, but maybe that’s too much plot. Maybe Guy Pearce is playing his character from “Memento” and has forgotten everything.

Anyway, we’ll be said to see these people go. But something tells the survivors are ready to shoot Season 2. And we’ll be waiting!

Banned Country Singer Morgan Wallen Wins 3 Billboard Music Awards Anyway — On Show from Same Company as Golden Globes

0

Maybe the problem isn’t just the Golden Globes. Maybe it’s Dick Clark Productions.

DCP produces the Golden Globes and the Billboard Music Awards.

Tonight country singer Morgan Wallen won 3 big awards despite being “banned” from the show. He won Top Country Artist, Top Country Male Artist and Top Country Album.

The Billboard Music Awards come from Billboard magazine, which is owned by MRC and Penske Media. MRC owns the awards show, in conjunction with Penske.

So the fact that Wallen used the “N” word in a TMZ video and was supposedly put on ice by the industry– it’s all talk. It means nothing. He got away with it. Wallen has been rewarded by everyone.

Indeed, he hasn’t suffered a bit. His “Double Album” has sold like hot cakes, making millions for him, the record company, the talent agency, as if his transgression was…nothing.
