The Hamptons Are Getting a New Player in the Media Wars: Grazia Gazette Hits Town At All the Hot Spots

Who said newspapers were dead? Not Dylan Howard, the former tabloid wunderkind from American Media before it rebranded as A360 Media. Since leaving the controversial publisher, Howard has quietly (and quickly) built a series of media companies including launching the 83-year-old fashion bible, Grazia, into the USA from the Italian powerhouse Mondadori Media.

Now the East End of New York is about to get a shake-up. Move over Hamptons Magazine, Dan’s Papers, and Purist, Howard’s Grazia Gazette: The Hamptons edition hits the streets and homes from today. I got a look at the product yesterday and it is stacked with advertisers like Ferragamo, Bentley, One&Only Resorts, Zero Bond and more.

The cover star is Madelyn Cline from Netflix’s hit show Outer Banks. But Howard still brings his style of journalism to the forefront with a compelling read on the halcyon days of disco at Studio 54. In all, it’s a luxury newspaper for the rich and famous designed and distributed to the playground of America’s rich and famous.

Howard, who has kept a low profile since exiting American Media, told me he’s releasing “at least” six editions of the Grazia Gazette: The Hamptons through labor day and the print run is 45,000 plus 200K digital distribution. You’ve got to give it to the 39-year-old Australian, who owns 100% of the company and has zero private investors, as he told me. He’s bounced back from the Trump and Bezos controversies and is building his own media empire. No surprise to learn that one of his media conglomerates is aptly called Empire Media Group, Inc.

The Weeknd and Ariana Grande Singing “Save Your Tears” Live Is a Reason to Think Music Isn’t Dead

“Save Your Tears” by The Weeknd has been a hit twice in the last year. First by The Weeknd alone on his album “After Hours,” then in a remix version with Ariana Grande. Max Martin wrote it, he’s a genius, this is one his gems.

This version, live, from the I Heart Music Awards, is gorgeous. It makes me think music isn’t dead. The Weeknd has really become a great performer. When Ariana sings like this, it’s magic, so much better than her faux hip hop albums. If only she would make a real album with songs. She could be bigger than Celine Dion. She has the voice.

Listen. BTW Max wrote this almost like a flashback to songs by Orchestral Manoeuvers in the Dark. Go back and listen to them on Spotify. “Secret,” Souvenir,” their masterpiece, “Enola Gay.” This is ripped cleverly from that playbook. OMD doesn’t enough love.

“Friends” Reunion was A Great Infomercial, Utterly Surface, Very Much Like a Real College Reunion

I couldn’t help thinking how sad the “Friends” reunion was. It was an infomercial at worst. At best, it was like a real college or high school reunion. All surface, with lots of underlying pathos.

The worst situation was Matthew Perry. Bloated, unable to speak properly whether from dental work or something else, Perry once dated Julia Roberts, for god’s sake. He was touted as having Tony Randall similarities in the early comedies in which he was featured. As my teachers used to say, he had so much potential.

But there he was, bloated, hair a mess, he was obviously late to the taping. I think it’s Jennifer Aniston who mentions it. It’s also Aniston who a few times calls Matt LeBlanc “Joey” during the show. Does she know “Friends” is over? Can she not remember his real name?

Anyway. The women all look great. Two of the three have had tough marriages. But they’ve all remained friends, and they’ve been successful beyond “Friends.” Aniston and Courteney Cox, we know, see each other a lot. Lisa Kudrow, who stole the reunion with her Lady Gaga “Smelly Cat” duet, seems like she’d be voted all around Most Successful.

But the guys. The guys! LeBlanc, who was so good in “Episodes,” looks like he’s been home eating cannolis for a year. And he had a year to get ready for this reunion, which was delayed by the pandemic. David Schwimmer: botox, facelift? I don’t know. He’s still very funny. But whatever he’s done to himself, he should try and undo.

And back to Perry: he talks about how desperate he was for laughs on the show. In flashbacks you see his weight swings. At one point he’s so thin, skin and bones, I thought how good it was there no social media then. He’s heartbreaking. I saw Matthew Perry in an off Broadway play he staged a few years ago. Few people have aged so poorly. What is at the core of his unhappiness?

Oh, plus: apparently Matthew Perry started a T shirt line or some clothing thing a few days earlier, to tie into the reunion show. Is he broke? How could he have gone through all that money? That cast made a fortune! (Also, doesn’t Warner TV own all those tag lines?)

As for the rest: James Corden was fine, they needed a moderator, why not him? The worst moment was Elliot Gould and Christina Pickles, who were treated with little respect. I’ll bet that’s why Marlo Thomas didn’t do this special. Waving from the audience. My god, that’s Elliot Gould, not just some guy from central casting. Christina looked great– she’s 86! — I remember her from “St. Elsewhere” and “Another World.” God bless.

The guy who played Gunther got short shrift, no surprise. The actual surprises were Maggie Wheeler returning as Janice. She gave it her all. And the guy who played the landlord in maybe one episode. He’s still alive! And, of course, Tom Selleck, who’s made so much money from “Blue Bloods” I’m surprised he even did this.

The rest of it was kind of random, indistinct. Who were all those pedestrian fans from other countries? Actors? Particularly the ones who weren’t white? Weren’t they wondering why no one in the show ever was non-white? That the “Friends” could have lived in Greenwich Village for a decade and not run into one such person?

Well, it’s over. Let the reruns play, over and over, beyond our final rests, so that Elon Musk can take them to Mars and show them there. And please, if the song says “I’ll be there for you,” can’t any of those people do something for Matthew Perry? I feel like we need a GoHelpMe page for him.

PETA Reminds Movie Fans Not to Buy Those Cute Dalmatians After Seeing Them in “Cruella”

PETA pushed for a disclaimer for “Cruella” urging audiences not to buy dogs, and the following message now appears during the film’s credits: “Every dog deserves a loving home. If you’re ready for the commitment of pet ownership, please consider visiting your local animal rescue to find the right pet for you.”
(Editor’s note: there are two other mutts in that movie that are very, very. Same goes for them!)
Below, please find a statement from PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange:
“Talk about a Disney ending! When PETA heard that Cruella was in the works, we reminded the House of Mouse that animal shelters were flooded with Dalmatians reportedly bought and discarded by 101 Dalmatians fans 25 years ago. We urged the studio to add an “adopt, don’t shop” disclaimer, so we’re howling with joy to see Disney’s on-screen message encouraging viewers to give dogs in shelters their happily ever after.”
PETA notes that “adopt, don’t shop” is a black-and-white issue: Breeders and pet stores churn out litter after litter of puppies, even though an estimated 70 million dogs and cats in the U.S. are homeless at any given time, an estimated 10% of whom end up in animal shelters. PETA and Disney encourage everyone ready for the lifetime commitment of caring for an animal to adopt from their local shelter.

Olivia Rodrigo, 18, Crowned Queen Teen of Pop with Debut Album, “Sour,” Selling Whopping 286K Copies

Olivia Rodrigo has got her Driver’s License to Sell.

The 18 year old — she just turned 18 — has a debut number 1 album today. “Sour” sold 286,500 copies according to Buzz Angle and hitsdailydouble. That is a HUGE number for an opening week for a first timer, and one who just became legal.

“Sour” sold 214,500 copies streaming equivalent and 68,000 CDs and downloads. The latter number made it the best seller in that category too.

Rodrigo has hit singles galore too. There are three on the Streaming Song Revenue chart. She has five slots on the iTunes charts. She’s all over the radio.

What will make everyone nuts, too, is “Sour” is sweet. It’s an excellent album that deserves a Grammy Album of the Year nomination. She will also easily take Best New Artist.

It’s going to a “Sour” summer, one that 2021’s teenage girls will always remember. And maybe even some of the guys.

Does she even have a high school diploma? Does it matter? And you know what’s nice? Olivia is American born with a big, proud Filipino heritage. She’ll be a big role model. Very nice.

Armie Hammer Is Having a Bad Day: Miles Teller Replaces Him in Series, “Call Me” Cast Makes Movie Without Him

Armie Hammer is having a bad day today.

His role as producer Al Ruddy has been recast with Miles Teller in the making of “The Godfather” mini series.

And the gang who made “Call Me By Your Name” is making another movie, without him.

“The Godfather” miniseries is called “The Offer” (as in making an offer you can’t refuse). It’s a mini series from Paramount Plus, formerly CBS All Access.

Ruddy would have been 40 when “The Godfather” went into production, Teller is 34. But they had to recast when Armie went batshit crazy and blew up his career.

At the same time, Hammer is missing out on a new movie directed by Luca Guadagnino. The director of Armie’s most important film, “Call Me By Your Name,” was going to make a sequel. But that project is pretty much kaput now that Hammer, again, has blown up his career. There are rape allegations, and all kinds of other bad stuff. Hammer has done nothing to fight the bad press, but instead has encouraged it.

So Guadagnino is making another movie called “Bones & All,” starring two “Call Me” castmates, Timothee Chalamet and Michael Stuhlbarg. This has to be a blow to Hammer, to see his whole former crew making a movie without him. It’s like they went out of their way to do it.

 

“Grey’s Anatomy” Season’s Penultimate Episode Down 29% in Key Age Group to Lowest Rating Ever

Meredith woke up, reruns are over, three cast members are gone.

And so is the audience for “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Last night’s penultimate season episode dropped 29% in the key demo, 11% in total viewers, and it its all time low rating of 4 million and change.

The show shed 500,000 viewers from the last two weeks of returns and almost 1 million from the last first run show.

Viewers have fled in droves. They apparently did like the ousting of three cast members for budget reasons. That’s clear. And they’re not so keen on Meredith Grey back from the dead, off the beach, with no chance of reuniting with either McDreamy or the Italian doctor.

Indeed, Meredith’s reaction to the Italian doctor being dead when she did wake up was priceless. She was really “thank you, next.”

What else has caused this hellacious drop in fans? I have some theories but we’ll have to wait and see what the numbers are for next week’s season finale. “Grey’s” is going to have to do some hard rethinking if they want to make 20 seasons. That’s two more, and that’s a lot of story.

 

Bad Billionaires Trying for Makeovers, Will It Work? James Murdoch with Tribeca Festival, Steve Cohen Sponsors Love Rocks

Some bad billionaires are trying like crazy to reform themselves in public.

Next week, Steve Cohen, who paid the government $1.8 billion in fines a few years ago for fraud, will sponsor the Love Rocks concert live streaming from the Beacon Theater in New York. This is the annual fundraiser for God’s Love We Deliver. In March 2020, Jackson Browne, Paul Shaffer, and musician Larry Campbell were among those who got COVID backstage at the Beacon.

Love Rocks has been sponsored in the past by designer John Varvatos. But his name is missing from this year’s press. In his place is Cohen and his wife Alexandra’s foundation. Cohen now owns the NY Mets, part of his effort to clean up his reputation as a financial predator. Bobby Axelrod, the borderline criminal financial mastermind of the TV show “Billions” is said to be at least partly inspired by him.

The Cohens, by the way, are huge Republican donors, massive financial supporters of Donald Trump and Chris Christie.

Then, the next week, James Murdoch’s Tribeca Festival begins. This used to be the Tribeca Film Festival. But since Murdoch bought it, they’ve dropped the “Film” part. They also dropped the Tribeca Film Institute. Robert DeNiro and Jane Rosenthal are still the faces of the Festival, but Murdoch, who’s trying to position himself as the Good Son of Rupert Murdoch, is the main investor through his family fund, Lupa Systems.

James Murdoch wants us to believe he deplores Fox News and the NY Post, and he’s really a cool guy who’s just using the billions his father made from decades of tabloid trash for good. But let’s not forget it was James who was the engineer of the British press hacking scandal of only a few short years ago. He is very much dad’s boy.

In September 2012, James was criticised by the British Office of Communications which concluded that he “repeatedly fell short of the conduct to be expected of as a chief executive and chairman” and that his lack of action in relation to phone hacking was “difficult to comprehend and ill-judged.”

Can these two billionaires sanitize their reps with these big public causes? That remains to be seen. They’re counting on the public now associating them with being do-gooders.  Whether that works, the jury is out.

Box Office: Paramount’s “A Quiet Place” Scores $5 Mil, But Cruella Is a Dog With $1.5 Mil Previews

I told you yesterday that “Cruella” was in trouble.

Now it’s come true. Thursday previews were just $1.5 million. Disney may be barking up the wrong tree despite a snazzy production and Emma Stone’s bravura performance.

Either the audience isn’t there for theaters, or they’re just going to watch it on Disney Plus. But “Cruella” is heading to a bust in person.

On the other hand, John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place Part 2” raked in around $5 million last night. Now this is a movie people want to see and in theaters. They must see it in theaters. Look for a big weekend for Paramount, which has needed a hit for a long, long time.

 

Oscars Surprise: Academy Chooses Late March 2022 Date for Show Despite Regular End of Year Eligibility

Color me surprised.

The 2022 Oscars will be held on March 27, 2022, much later than I thought or anyone else did.

The cut off is still December 31st. So without Golden Globes, there will now be three full months til the actual show.

Why? Beats me. The original date for the 2022 show was supposed to be February 27th. With the Globes gone, I thought it would make sense to move up to late January or early February. Wasn’t the idea to get this thing done sooner rather than later?

But no one asked me! Now by the time we have the Oscars, the movies will be quite past their expiration date. Obviously, the Academy and ABC know what they’re doing. So we’ll just go along for the ride!

But please, back in the Dolby Theater, and please get a host, kids! Jimmy Kimmel has that tux ready. Let him use it!
