Broadway: Look on the Bright Side, Monty Python’s Hilarious Tony Award Winning “Spamalot” Is Coming Back This Fall

0

Always look on the bright side of life, and you’ll be rewarded.

“Spamalot” is coming back to Broadway.

The Tony Award winning hilarious musical is exactly what we need right now.

After a 10 performance run at Washington’s Kennedy Center, the Monty Python musical will open in New York in November. Eric Idle wrote the book and lyrics, Idle wrote the music with John DuPrez. This time around, the director is Josh Rhodes. So far it’s a Kennedy Center production. We’re waiting to see which theater it’s going to, and who the New York producers are.

And what a cast! Alex Brightman, Leslie Kritzer, and Rob McClure — all from “Beetlejuice” — plus Tony Award winner James Monroe Inglehart, and Michael Urie.

“Spamalot” won Best Musical at the Tony Awards in 2005. Sara Ramirez won Best Featured Actress in a Musical, and Mike Nichols won Best Director of a Musical.

“Spamalot” will join “Merrily We Roll Along” among musical revivals this season headed for the June 2024 Tony Awards.

Finally: Some Movement in Writers Guild Strike, Studios Ask for Friday Meeting to Talk About Talking

There may finally be some thawing in the frozen relations between the studios and the Writers Guild.

The WGA sent out a message tonight indicating the AMPTP has asked for a meeting on Friday. It’s a beginning after no contact for some time. Maybe this will lead to good things. It’s enough already

Zendaya has posted a memorial to her “Euphoria” castmate, Angus Cloud, who died yesterday at age 25. Zendaya, who plays Rue in the series, is herself only turning 27 on September 1st. Almost everyone on “Euphoria” is young. The show depicts a high school full of sex and drug addicts, as well as drug dealers. Angus played Fezco, a drug dealer with a big heart. Will it return one day for Season 3? If it does, there will be a lot of new actors, and high school will be long over.

Donald Trump Sets Another Record, Indicted for Third Time as Ex President: More to Come (Read the Indictment Here)

0

Donald Trump loves setting records.

A little while ago he was indicted for the third time since exiting the White House. No former president will ever be able to compete with those stats.

Trump is now under federal indictment for four counts involved the January 6th 2021 Capitol riots. There are also six unindicted co-conspirators. Speculation is that they include Rudy Giuliani, Sydney Powell, and John Eastman.

And there’s more to come. The State of Georgia is close to bringing charges against Trump for election fraud in the 2020 election.

I know, it’s a lot to look forward to. But what a perfect gift for the dog days of August!

Jamie Foxx Wishes Sister Happy Birthday, Says “Had you not made the decisions that you made I would’ve lost my life”

0

Jamie Foxx is thanking sister DeOndra Dixon for saving his life.

In a birthday post to DeOndra, Jamie writes: “without you I would not be here… had you not made the decisions that you made I would’ve lost my life…”

Wow. Nice birthday gift. Jamie suffered from some kind of medical incident that knocked him out for three months. He was hospitalized and transferred to a rehab facility that re-teaches walking. But he’s back, and he’s lucky to such a great family!

Madonna Cuts Her Charitable Giving by Almost 75%, Still Sends Big Bucks to Shady Kabbalah Cult, Must Get Back to Work Soon

0

(EXCLUSIVE) Now that Madonna’s on the mend, and looking good, we’re back to business.

It does seem the 2021 economy got to her bottom line. New numbers are out for Madonna’s charitable foundation, called Ray of Light. They indicate that the Material Girl should get back to work as soon as she feels well enough to do it. (She starts her postponed tour in October in Europe.)

The most immediate thing that jumps out from Ray of Light’s Form 990 filing is that Madonna cut her giving by almost 75% from 2020 and around 50% from 2019.

In those years she donated, respectively, $2.1 million and $1.1 million to a small group of organizations.

In 2021, the number fell to $584,500.

Madonna’s net worth is reported to be $850 million.

The luckiest group: the Kabbalah Center of Los Angeles, a shady cult that has been investigated many times. Madge is loyal to these people no matter what happens. She gave them $100,000 in 2021, a 50% chop from 2020.

David Bowie’s “Rebel Rebel” Used for Frankenstein Country Song But So Far No One’s Buying It Including the iTunes Charts

0

Kudos to the publicist who placed stories today bout Chris Young’s country single. “Young Love and Saturday Nights.”

The song is a rip off of David Bowie’s rock classic “Rebel Rebel.” It’s the same same with different lyrics. The AP article marvels at a word sent to them by the publicist (who deserves a raise) — ‘interpolation.’ They’d never heard it before!

The gist of this thing is that the Bowie estate was somehow convinced to allow Young and his co-writers to adapt the song since they had no original ideas of their own. Hence, “Rebel Rebel” became the Young song, and Bowie gets a credit on a country single.

The whole idea is laughable. It’s also not new. The greatest ‘interpolation’ came 30 years ago when Puff Daddy lifted Sting’s “Every Breath You Take” and turned it into “I’ll Be Missing You.” After Sting’s lawyers arrived, the Police front man got the publishing money forever. Was it worth it?

Other famous examples include Vanilla Ice turning Queen and David Bowie’s “Under Pressure” into “Ice Ice Baby” and .MC Hammer making “U Can’t Touch This” from Rick James’ “Super Freak.”

in Latin, Interpolation means cover record with different lyrics. Kanye West has interpolated plenty of old hits, so have Alicia Keys and many other stars. This is not a new idea, except at the Associated Press.

The irony in the Bowie/Chris Young situation is that apparently no one cares. “Young Love and Saturday Nights” has been out for 11 days. It does not appear on the iTunes top 200. On YouTube, the video has just 82,000 views. On Spotify, there are only a half million streams.

Could it be country music lovers smell a rat?

The winners are the Bowie estate and Warner Chappell Music, which owns the rights to Bowie’s music. They got their money regardless of whether the record ever takes off.

Lesson learned: don’t mess with the Bowie legacy.

Monday Box Office: “Barbie” Slows Down a Little, Off 49% to JUST $15 Mil, Now What About a Sequel? Will Mattel Leave Money on the Table?

0

Mondays box office showed a little weariness in the “Barbie” world.

The plastic, fantastic phenom took in just $15 million, down 49% from Sunday and 43% from last Monday

Domestic total is now an eye popping $366 million US and $789 million worldwide. Don’t worry, the billion dollar make is coming soon.

No one could ever have foreseen this: “Barbie” bigger than Indiana Jones and Mission Impossible.

So what about a sequel? Director Greta Gerwig told the NY Times that she has no plans for one at the moment. But trust me, Mattel does. There will be a massive negotiation to get all the principals back together. The story writes itself since Barbie is now in the “real world.” Will she survive? Will Ken join her? Will the sequel be called “A Doll’s House”?

Mattel already has plans for 17 movies based on their toys. With “Barbie” eyeing $1 billion, there’s no way the company will leave that sequel money on the table. Just wait til Warner Bros. suggests adding Barbie and Ken to the DC Universe for a cross over!

Review: How Jackie Martling Escaped from the Howard Stern Show and Became a Dirtier, More Beloved Comic

0

I’m a little late getting to Jackie Martling’s documentary, “Joke Man,” but I’ll tell you, this is what we need in the middle of a gross, hot summer.

Jackie is known to millions from Howard Stern’s radio show. Ultimately, he left to be his own star, a designation he deserved, and eventually I think they made up. Kinda. But if you want to know what made Howard so outrageous in his heyday, the answer is Jackie Martling. Nothing was off limits. He was labeled a bit of a savant, hence the nickname “Joke Man.”

Jackie’s metier is bathroom jokes. His stories are filthy and he knows enough punch lines to set a room of drums ready for rim shots. The thing is, he’s so sweet in his own way (I hope he doesn’t mind that) that even the worst of them — worse than, for example, “the Aristocrats,” the dirtiest joke ever — that it’s all good. Martliny has developed a rep for serving up zingers delivered in apple sauce.

You’ll be surprised by some of Jackie’s friends who are interviewed in the film. One of his BFFs is Willie Nelson, of all people. There’s also actress Sean Young, billionaire Mark Cuban, and magician Penn Jillette. Also, another ex Stern comedian Artie Lange, is featured. He and Jackie compare notes about being ostracized from Stern’s world. There are several more cameos, too.

How many people love Jackie Martling? His ex wife very astutely provides her own story arc and observations about him. They are still in touch and she’s charming. Jackie’s on tour this summer and fall, and I swear, watching this doc — well directed by Ian Karr — will make you want to go to one of his shows.

“Joke Man” is available on Apple TV, Amazon Prime, and most streaming services.

RIP Angus Cloud, 25, Played Fezco the Drug Dealer on “Euphoria,” Talented Young Actor Grappled with Father’s Death

0

This is really a shame.

Angus Cloud, the 25 year old actor who played Fez on “Euphoria,” has died at his family’s home in Oakland, apparently from an overdose. Angus was in a deep depression after the May death of his father. Conor Hickey, age 66, an Irish rugby “legend” and Cloud”s best friend.

His family put out a statement:

“It is with the heaviest heart that we had to say goodbye to an incredible human today,” Cloud’s family said in a statement. “As an artist, a friend, a brother and a son, Angus was special to all of us in so many ways. Last week he buried his father and intensely struggled with this loss. The only comfort we have is knowing Angus is now reunited with his dad, who was his best friend. Angus was open about his battle with mental health and we hope that his passing can be a reminder to others that they are not alone and should not fight this on their own in silence.

“We hope the world remembers him for his humor, laughter and love for everyone. We ask for privacy at this time as we are still processing this devastating loss.”

Cloud became very popular on “Euphoria,” a show that exploits the trauma of young people. Recently singer Dominic Fike said that he was high for most of season 2. Another actress has elected not to return.

Cloud was signed recently for “Scream 6.”

keep refreshing…
