Mariah Carey Working with Randy Jackson on Album in Hamptons

1

When she’s not being a diva at local events, Mariah Carey is hard at work in the Hamptons. Her manager and producer Randy Jackson, of “American Idol” fame, flew out to the South Fork over the weekend to work with her on her new album. As I reported last week, her first single will be called “Triumphant.” Mariah’s new album is hotly anticipated at DefJam Records this fall. With an already crowded schedule of new music coming out from every label, the record biz needs a big hit from Mariah.

Maybe working with Randy is what made Mariah so late for Russell Simmons Art for Life charity dinner–where she and husband Nick Cannon were bring honored on Saturday night.  You have to love Mariah. She’s one of a kind. According to sources who worked on the event, Carey was very late showing up for the presentation. But this is nothing new. The joke at Fox is that with Mariah judging “American Idol,” and the show being live, “AI” may not air until 11pm Eastern. Fox will have to treat it like a sports event with rain delays. They can toss in reruns of “The Simpsons” while everyone waits.

“Mariah insisted that no one but Russell Simmons be on stage when she went on,” says my source. “She had to come in through the kitchen, which had to be cleared. She didn’t want to see anyone, or be seen, before stepping foot on stage. She wanted Soledad O’Brien and Grant Hill out of there. She was a lot of work. And yes, as reported elsewhere, she didn’t allow cameras on her. They did turn off the big screens. She didn’t like the way her make up looked.”

By contrast, 90s duo Salt n Pepa, who performed at Art for Life, only asked for water backstage. They brought down the house with their old hits like “Let’s Talk About S-E-X.”

As for Mariah: her shenanigans are amusing if you’re in the mood because she’s not petulant. She’s kind of cute. I’ll never forget her receiving dinner backstage at the Live 8 concert in London’s Hyde Park a few years ago. She made the aide take back her spaghetti dinner because she smelled grated cheese “from a can” and not freshly prepared. They didn’t even have to take the foil off the top. Mariah’s nose knew.  God bless her.

Oscars: Hawk Koch Elected Academy President

0

from the Academy: Howard Koch, Jr., a popular producer of commercial films, has been named the new prez of AMPAS. He has a long history in the film business, producing everything from “Heaven Can Wait” to a 1990 movie I personally love, “The Long Walk Home” and right now is making Naomi Foner’s “Very Good Girls.”  His father, Howard Koch, who died in 2001 at age 84, produced many of the Oscar telecasts of the past and many hit movies, as well. His first order of business, after the Oscars themselves and piracy: bring back the turkey sandwiches on sale at the bar in the Dolby Theater during the Academy Awards.

Beverly Hills, CA – Producer Hawk Koch was elected president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences tonight (July 31) by the organization’s Board of Governors. This will be his first term in the office.

Koch, who is beginning his ninth year as a governor representing the Producers Branch, has served as first vice president of the Academy during the past year. He previously served three one-year terms as treasurer and one term as vice president.

In addition, Public Relations Branch governor Cheryl Boone Isaacs was elected first vice president; Producers Branch governor Kathleen Kennedy was elected to one vice president post and Writers Branch governor Phil Robinson was re-elected to the other vice president post; Public Relations Branch governor Rob Friedman was elected treasurer; and Executives Branch governor Robert Rehme was elected secretary.

Koch’s producer credits include “Losing Isaiah” and “Gorky Park.” He recently served as executive producer on “Source Code” and is executive producer on the upcoming “Very Good Girls.”

Academy board members serve three-year terms, while officers serve one-year terms, with a maximum of four consecutive terms in any one office.

“Dark Knight Rises” Will Hit $300 Mil Tonight in the U.S.

0

Is “The Dark Knight Rises” a monster hit? It will cross the $300 million mark tonight after 11 days in release. That sounds  like a hit, and it is one. But it’s still running almost $25 million behind “The Dark Knight,” which had $324 mil and change in its pockets by its 11th day. The only reason for this is Aurora, I think, because otherwise this was the most anticipated movie of the year. That–and the Olympics, which are keeping people at home to see events that happened earlier in the day. If the Olympics could be seen in real time, during the day, then people could go out at night to the movies. Of course, no work would get done. And ad rates are higher on TV at night than during the day. Anyway, “TDKR” remains at number 1, and nothing is going to shake it off that position in the near future. Even I’m getting ready to go back and see it again.

This week we get “Total Recall,” a very good comedy called “Celeste and Jesse Forever,” and a not very good something that’s been around for a while called “360” that never coheres into anything. “TDKR” is safe at number 1.

Rene Russo, Cut out of Big Studio “Thor,” Aims for New Indies Now

0

Rene Russo was the queen of the big budget movie. Think of it. Her costars were Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, Clint Eastwood, Kevin Costner, Pierce Brosnan, Mel Gibson, John Travolta, and so on. For years and years she was “the girl” they called in to play the wife, the girlfriend, etc. Last year, though, she shot a role in “Thor” and got mostly cut out of it. “Anthony Hopkins and I were each cut out,” she told me proudly last night. Might as well be on the cutting room floor with the best.

So now Russo, who took a little time off to get her daughter to age 18, is coming back. This winter she’ll shoot the feature film version of “Frank and Cindy.” It’s an indie movie by a first time director, G.J. Echternkamp. It’s based on his 2007 documentary about his mother and stepfather. Cindy is the wife of Frank, a ne’er do well real life rocker who had one minor single hit in 1983. It could be another “American Splendor.” Cindy, Russo points out, is missing 17 teeth. Do I hear Sundance? Oscar?

“I just couldn’t do any more of those other roles,” Rene told me. We know what she means. “I didn’t care anymore.” Good for her. Her husband, Dan Gilroy, co-wrote “The Bourne Legacy” with his director brother Tony. All the Gilroys were there last night for the premiere. Renee was just a member of the family. But really, she’s a movie star. “Frank and Cindy”– something to look forward to.

By the way, Frank’s hit was called “Whirly Girl.” The group was called OXO. I have zero memory of it, and I was only in my 20s and paying full attention to the radio then. But here’s the video. Maybe someone remembers it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaglwlgd97Q

Matrix Directors Used to Be Brothers, Now Brother and Sister

0

I actually posted a link to the Wachowskis’ video promo for “Cloud Atlas” last week. Suddenly, though, it’s taken off again. Here’s the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2qeFxgGpM0, Larry Wachowski is now Lana, and seems pretty happy and well adjusted. Good for her! The new Wachowskis seem a lot happier than the old Wachowskis, who were always hiding and mysterious. It’s all good! I’ve also had the 5 minute trailer they talk about in our video player on the bottom of the home page for several days. The movie is either great or unintelligible. We’ll see.

Quentin Tarantino to Get Museum of Modern Art Film Tribute

0

It’s Oscar season soon, so it’s time for tributes and special awards that will highlight directors of Oscar buzzed films. Now we’re told that the Museum of Modern
Art’s fifth annual Film Benefit, to be held on December 3rd at 6:30 PM, will honor writer / director Quentin Tarantino. This will be just two weeks before Tarantino unveils “Django Unchained,” with an all star cast and a controversial screenplay. The movie looks amazing from clips, with Jamie Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio. Now a release from MoMA says that “[Tarantino] renowned for the Academy Award-winning films Pulp Fiction (1994) and Inglourious Basterds (2009), and earlier hit films Reservoir Dogs (1992), Jackie Brown (1997), Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003), and Kill Bill Vol. 2 (2004), among others. Tarantino’s latest film, “Django Unchained”, will be released by The Weinstein Company on December 25th. The Film Benefit held at The Museum of Modern Art (11 W. 53rd St) will be highlighted by a special presentation recognizing Tarantino’s acclaimed directorial work, followed by a gala dinner. The Film Benefit raises funds to ensure that great works of cinema continue to join the collection of The Museum of Modern Art”

James Bond Didn’t Attend Olympics Opening After All

0

We saw James Bond parachute with the Queen into Olympic Stadium last week, didn’t we? And then there he was, with the Queen, on video. But actor Daniel Craig wasn’t there on opening night–even as a guest. I asked him last night where he was during the grand Olympic opening ceremony? “Somewhere else,” he snapped at the opening last night of “The Bourne Legacy” starring his wife Rachel Weisz, who was married to “Black Swan” director Darren Aronofsky.

The pair fell in love on a movie that turned out to be quite a disaster, called “Dream House.” The film ended a nightmare, costing over $75 million and making just $37 million worldwide. Craig next stars in the James Bond film, “Skyfall,” which comes out this November most likely with a theme song (crossing our fingers) sung by Adele. Weisz, meantime, is a knockout as Jeremy Renner’s accomplice in “Bourne.”

Her next big role as the Wicked Witch of the East in “Oz,” with James Franco, opening next March. Sadly, that’s the Queen who gets the house dropped on her, and loses the ruby slippers to Dorothy. Luckily, Weisz is more like Gilda, the good witch, in what we call real life.

PS Here’s a link to the new “Skyfall” trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozgZvg3cggE

“Bourne Legacy” Review: Jeremy Renner Becomes the Thinking Man’s Tom Cruise

1

Jeremy Renner was already being set up as the new Tom Cruise in this summer’s “Mission Impossible 4.” His role in Tony Gilroy’s “The Bourne Legacy” puts him over the top. I owe Gilroy a good review after not really liking (or understanding) “Duplicity.”

So here it is: the director of “Michael Clayton” pulls off a most difficult trick here.

After writing three “Bourne” movies for Matt Damon, Gilroy steps in as director. He doesn’t do a sequel but a sidestep into a different character. (There’s mention that Bourne is missing, so Damon can return one day.) Renner plays Aaron Cross, an agent who needs top secret medication and the services of a doctor (played with a lot of verve by Rachel Weisz). Gilroy stuffs the film with brainy actors, from Renner and Weisz to Oscar Isaac, Edward Norton, Donna Murphy, Dennis Boutsikaris, Stacy Keach, Corey Stoll, and so on.

The actors are great but they’re lucky too because Gilroy and his screenwriter brother Dan (husband also of actress Rene Russo–who’s taken a couple of years off and looks terrific) have fashioned a smart script that gives enough character development so when the action starts, you get it. This movie features a wild motorcycle-car-motorcycle chase, too, a real thriller of a popcorn pleaser. With Renner running over tenuous roofs in a Manila ghetto, you get the Cruise inference loud and clear.

Universal will have a nice hit with “Bourne Legacy,” perfect for the dog days of August. And they know it. The studio threw a lavish premiere at the Four Seasons, so packed in the Pool Room that you wanted to jump in. Most of Universal’s big execs were, as well as most of the cast. Weisz brought along second husband Daniel Craig, who proved to be cranky and rude while she was her usual gracious self. Some other guests included Demi Moore, charming as always and returning home to the west coast after shooting Naomi Foner’s  “Very Good Girls” here.

Also: directors Joel Coen and Bennett Miller, who talked for the first time. Big news from Joel: the Coen Brothers’ “Inside Llewyn Davis” will probably debut at the Berlin Film Festival in February 2013. It will not make the Oscar deadline. It doesn’t have a distributor, Coen says they’re just cutting it now. Too bad. A Coen Brothers movie would have made this year’s awards race very interesting.

Anyway: seeing Jeremy Renner make the leap to movie star is very gratifying. He’s a good guy, a great actor with lots of range and an unlimited future. And unlike some others who started that way, I don’t think he’ll change for the worse. And Tony Gilroy: mazel tov.

Michael Jackson Estate Bars Randy, Jermaine, Janet, Rebbie and Joe Jackson from Kids’ Home

0

We are first to report this development in the Jackson saga: The executors of the Michael Jackson estate have sent a letter to most of the Jackson family barring them from Katherine Jackson’s rented home in Calabasas, California. The estate rents the house for Mrs. Jackson and Michael’s three kids. But now Joe Jackson as well as Randy, Jermaine, Janet, and Rebbie, any of their kids or spouses, plus Mrs. Jackson’s secretary Janice Smith–they are all barred from entering.

In other words , the “Jackson 5”–Randy, Jermaine, Janet, Rebbie and Joseph–are out.

After the sort of house attack conducted by Randy, Jermaine and Janet Jackson last week– in which the three siblings tried to take Michael Jackson’s kids, exchanged epithets with them etc–Mrs. Jackson’ s lawyers have sent a letter to them. Now that she’s back Katherine Jackson is allowing grandson TJ to draw up a list for security about who can come and go. There will be no more disturbances and no more crashing cars through security gates.

Here’s part of the letter sent by executor’s lawyer Howard Weitzman last Wednesday to the Jackson 5 so to speak. Randy Jackson gave it to a tabloid website thinking he was smart and people would be outraged. But in fact, the letter was the proper thing to do:

“Following the events of July 23 in which certain members of the Jackson family showed up unannounced at the Calabasas residence of Michael Jackson’s mother and children, causing a very public disturbance, the attorneys for the Estate of Michael Jackson as lessees of the house were requested by Charles Schultz, attorney for TJ Jackson, Jr., the newly appointed Temporary Guardian for Michael Jackson’s children, to send a list to the security gate of people neither TJ or the children wanted allowed on the premises in view of the incidents that had just taken place.  The list may be amended and managed by TJ Jackson Jr. or the Estate when appropriate.  It is imperative to the Estate that from this point forward a safe and appropriate environment be provided for Michael Jackson’s children and his mother.”

“Given the circumstances of the last two weeks, and in order to protect the children and Mrs. Jackson, the Executors believe that it would not be appropriate to allow the following individuals to enter the residence or its grounds and we instruct the security to preclude the following from entering the residence or the grounds: Randy Jackson and any of his children, Janet Jackson, Rebbie Jackson and any of her children, Jermaine Jackson, his wife and any of his children, Janice Smith, or anyone else who was involved in the recent events that led to Mrs. Jackson’s separation from and inability to communicate with Michael’s children, or any agents or representatives of any of these individuals.”

Madonna: Please Don’t Bring Swastika and Guns to Yankee Stadium

0

Madonna is coming to Yankee Stadium on September 6th and 8th. The first show is sold out, technically. The second one is not. Madonna’s had a lot of PR trouble recently in France but at least she’s still selling tickets in Europe. She recently cancelled her entire Australian tour–which was supposed to be her first in 20 years. But the prices were too high, and the advance interest wasn’t there. Madonna could not sell $700 premium packages  to the Aussies.

Last week, Madonna caused a riot in Paris when she showed the Nazi symbol of a swastika on a video screen. The swastika has been criticized since it first turned up on her tour. She seems to have no idea how offensive it is, just as she ignored the Nazi passions of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor in her movie,. “W.E.” She didn’t care that she was inviting trouble in France last week when she put the Nazi symbol on screen to provoke followers of Marine Le Pen, head of the National Front. Madonna was looking for attention and she got it in the form of a riot from Le Pen’s nasty minions.

Now as she plans her return to the U.S. here’s some advice: Madonna, please do not bring your Nazi swastika and guns to the U.S. let alone Yankee Stadium.  They are unwanted. The last thing that will be acceptable here is the Nazi symbol. Or guns. (Please– in the Bronx that’s like bringing coal to Newcastle.)

Madonna disregards history and has little interest in how she offends others. She thinks it’s all about provocative art or something.  The ironic part of this whole swastika business is that Madonna, courtesy of the bogus Kabbalah Center organization, considers herself some kind of faux-Jew. She wears a cross but attends fake High Holy days services. If Kabbalah were real, or Madonna were actually Jewish., she certainly wouldn’t be sporting a swastika on her forehead. As for guns, Madonna has been out of the country this summer.  Maybe she’s missed the big news stories. One of her lackeys can explain the Aurora killings to her. Guns on stage? Not this year, Madonna. They’re completely out of fashion.
