Joan Rivers Receives Outpouring of Love and Prayers

3

Joan Rivers is receiving an overwhelming amount of support, love, and prayers all over the internet. The New York Daily News reports that doctors at Mt. Sinai Hospital have put Joan into a induced coma after an outpatient procedure at a nearby clinic went wrong yesterday. Rivers stopped breathing and may have suffered cardiac arrest. Her daughter, Melissa, has flown in from Los Angeles.

One reason Joan must wake up is to see what’s going on. After all the jokes and the carrying on, it turns out she’s occupied a bigger part of our lives and hearts than anyone could have guessed. Who knew? Joan Rivers is an international institution.

At 81, she is a survivor and a real emblem of the American dream. There’s nothing harder to do than what she’s achieved– a woman in a man’s world who would not give up or shut up, who always speaks her mind. She’s not always right but her batting average is World Series level. When the news broke Thursday morning that she was in trouble, the reaction was palpable. But Joan is a fighter. And everyone is rooting for her.

Stallone, Schwarzenegger All Star “Expendables 3” Has Been A Box Office Bust

6

Checking back in with “Expendables 3,” the box office reality is worse than thought. Domestic take is just $29.2 million. Foreign is terrible, at just $21.5 million. Even reliable territories where Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger might still sell tickets didn’t want to see another installment of this former A list adventure.

Adding Harrison Ford and Mel Gibson didn’t do anything, either. No one knows the budget, but it’s got to be minimum $75 million. Salaries and perks for this group–those four stars plus the second level, etc– would guarantee that. “Expendables 3” should have been a payday movie. But many things went wrong.

Bruce Willis was the smart one here. He smelled a turkey and declined to join in. Stallone’s been talking a new female “Expendables” but at this point maybe he should move on to a new project.

George Clooney on Brangelina Marriage: “How Great for Them!”

2

After all the drama and headlines, George Clooney wasn’t Brad Pitt’s best man. Clooney said in a statement I just received:
“How great is that?!!” ” I’m really happy for brad and Angie and their whole family”

So much for that. George may finally be back in Italy after a summer mostly in New York and the U.S. His own possible wedding is set for mid September either in Lake Como or Venice. If Brad and Angie managed to pull off a secret wedding this past weekend, you can bet George will do the same.

Meantime, in Italy near Tuscany, I’m hearing funny stories about a major movie star who was once here, from locals. The star’s publicist was here and was just as awful as she is when we deal with her. And this was a decade ago! Laughing when I heard the dreaded name! LOL. And the star was just as awful as ever.

A clue: this star knows both Brad and George…

Angelina Jolie Got Married without Her Father: Jon Voight Was in LA for Emmys

4

Well, some things haven’t changed. Angelina Jolie got married to Brad Pitt without her father walking her down the aisle.

Jon Voight was in Los Angeles all weekend for the Emmy Awards. He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a drama for “Ray Donovan.”

Something tells me if he’d been invited to the wedding he would have skipped the Emmys. Sons Pax and Maddox walked her down the aisle according to a spokesman.

Angelina and her father have never been on great terms. And even though he often puts on the appearance that things are ok, it never quite seems that way. Tough deal for a daughter not to have her only living parent at her wedding. But Angelina knows what she’s doing.

AP: Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie Married On Saturday in South of France

1

The Associated Press says Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were married on Saturday at their home in Nice, France. The couple was photographed arriving in Nice last Friday before heading to Chateau Miraval. If it’s true, great. They have six kids and they are the real thing. Bravo and congrats. More details to come. I’m sure People magazine has the exclusive photos on the way.

Want to make a bet? Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga are going to open the Grammy show next February and win everything. The album “Cheek to Cheek” makes land on September 23. Here’s “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love.”

Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus Making Homelessness the New Pop Cause

2

Just as ice bucket challenges are peaking for ALS, a new cause is coming into vogue with pop stars: homelessness. (Maybe it’s because the ice bucket is well suited to summer, and homelessness is more pronounced as winter comes.)

First Miley Cyrus brought a homeless date the MTV Video Music Awards, a celebration of mindessness. Leave it to Miley to find a handsome homeless guy to launch her crowdfunding campaign on Prizeo. You can win a trip to Rio to see Miley on her wrecking ball, and the money goes to My Friend’s Place. http://www.prizeo.com/prizes/miley-cyrus/vip-concert-in-rio

Now Miley’s pop rival has jumped in to the game. Katy Perry is supporting homeless vets in Michigan and Texas through Veterans Matter, another organization. Katy auctioned off a VIP package to her recent Cleveland concert. Now 22 vets will some kind of housing thanks to a guy named Scott Vaughn of Oakton, Virginia. He ponied up the dough.

Of course, it’s not all simple. There are reports that Miley’s date is wanted on an arrest warrant in Oregon. And Katy hasn’t started entertaining at homeless shelters. But it’s a good sign. Ladies, come to New York, organize a concert for the Coalition for the Homeless. Winter is coming, and it’s going to be cold.

Tony Soprano: Neither Alive Nor Dead, Says David Chase: “A spiritual end” to show

0

Everybody just cool out. Sopranos creator David Chase says he did not tell a writer for Vox.com that Tony Soprano is alive. Or dead.

Here’s a statement from Chase’s rep Leslee Dart:
A journalist for Vox misconstrued what David Chase said in their interview. To simply quote David as saying,“ Tony Soprano is not dead,” is inaccurate. There is a much larger context for that statement and as such, it is not true.

As David Chase has said numerous times on the record, “Whether Tony Soprano is alive or dead is not the point.” To continue to search for this answer is fruitless. The final scene of THE SOPRANOS raises a spiritual question that has no right or wrong answer.

Writing from abroad for a few days, I don’t know exactly what’s going on minute to minute. I guess the NY Post went crazy for the Vox story. But I do know David Chase, we’ve had many conversations about this, and frankly, he would never have said that. He might have meant Tony Soprano lives on for fans or for himself. But the thing the Vox writer missed is that James Gandolfini is dead. The actor was Tony Soprano. David gave the most beautiful eulogy last year at Gandolfini’s funeral. And that is the end of Tony and the story.

When The Sopranos ended, that night, I wrote that when you cut to black without music at the end of a show, that would indicate death. My guess is that Tony and his family were murdered in that restaurant. But everyone has a different opinion. And no one will ever know the answer.

R&B Star Chris Brown Looks for Trouble with New Album: Duets with Infamous R Kelly And Dead Ex Aaliyah

2

Chris Brown has never recovered from his 2009 brawl with Rihanna. The last five years have been spent in and out of jail, in front of judges, getting into fights, and recently hosting a VMA pary where rap celeb Marion “Suge” Knight was shot six times.

Just when you think you’ve heard it all comes the track list for Brown’s new album, called “X,” and due any minute. Is he going to class it up, overcome his bad rap, and get smart for a change? No way.

Among the tracks is a duet with R. Kelly, the only more infamous R&B artist around. Kelly, a prolific songwriter, has a bad history with the law concerning underage women. In 2008 he was acquitted on 14 counts of videotaping himself with an underage girl.

So now you have Brown, in and out of jail, and court, performing with Kelly. On top of that, Brown also resurrects Aaliyah from the dead for a duet. You may recall that Kelly and Aaliyah were briefly married– she was 15, and underage– and the marriage was annulled.

It’s unlikely even with these controversies that Brown will get much action with the new album. The shadow of the Rihanna incident hangs over him. Bringing R. Kelly and Aaliyah into the mix doesn’t seem like the answer. But this guy just takes the rough road whenever he can.

Denzel Washington’s Son Among New Class at AFI Film Institute

1

When the new American Film Institute season starts today, the class will have at least one legacy student. I’ve heard that Malcolm Washington, son of Oscar winner Denzel and his wife Pauletta, is embarking on a career as a filmmaker. Malcolm was a high school and college basketball player with an eye on cinema. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in May 2013.

Malcolm isn’t the first kid who’s come to AFI with a starry provenance. The class of 2014 included Pixar chief John Lasseter’s son Bennett and John de Menil of the famed de Menil art collector family.

In past years, the school also boasted John Kerry’s daughter Alexandra, Karl Malden’s granddaugher Cami Starkman, Jace Alexander (son of Jane Alexander and writer Robert Alexander), Charlie McDowell (Malcolm McDowell and Mary Steenburgen are the parents) and even Bette Midler’s performing artist husband Martin von Hasselberg.

When the Conservatory opens today, the new class will get a nice perk– an early screening of AFI grad Ed Zwick’s new film “Pawn Sacrifice” starring Tobey Maguire, Peter Sarsgaard, and Lily Rabe.
